Tokyo, Japan: Japan's two largest airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), have raised fuel surcharges on international passenger tickets purchased during July and August 2026, with charges exceeding ¥65,000 (around US$400) on some long-haul routes despite a sharp decline in jet fuel prices across Asia. The increase, which took effect on July 1, reflects the airlines' long-standing fuel surcharge calculation methodology that relies on historical average fuel prices rather than prevailing market rates. Both carriers revise their international fuel surcharges every two months. According to JAL, the revised surcharge is based on the average Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel price during April and May 2026, when fuel averaged US$178.21 per barrel. Since then, jet fuel prices have fallen substantially, dropping to US$113 per barrel on July 2, according to LSEG data. The decline follows an unprecedented spike that saw prices surge to a record US$242 per barrel in late March amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Because the surcharge calculation uses a two-month averaging mechanism with a lag, the recent decline in fuel prices will not be reflected until the next revision. As a result, passengers purchasing tickets in July and August will continue to pay significantly higher fuel surcharges despite easing fuel markets. JAL said the surcharge could have been even higher if not for financial support provided by the Japanese government to offset soaring energy costs resulting from the conflict involving Iran. Under the airline's pricing formula, the April-May average fuel price would have placed the surcharge in a higher pricing band. However, government mitigation measures reduced the applicable surcharge level, preventing passengers from paying the maximum allowable amount. For the July-August ticketing period, JAL's highest one-way fuel surcharge is ¥65,000 for flights between Japan and North America (excluding Hawaii), Europe, the Middle East and Oceania. Similar surcharge levels have also been introduced by ANA. The increase marks a sharp rise in travel costs over recent months. According to ANA's published surcharge tables, fuel levies on routes connecting Japan with Hawaii, India and Indonesia have more than tripled since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, increasing from US$94 in April to US$310 in July. JAL's surcharge structure reflects similar increases across comparable international routes. Although crude oil and jet fuel prices have retreated considerably from their March highs, the depreciation of the Japanese yen has continued to add pressure on airline operating costs. The yen fell to a 40-year low against the U.S. dollar earlier this week, making dollar-denominated fuel purchases more expensive for Japanese carriers and pushing the value of the highest surcharge to approximately US$400. JAL calculates its fuel surcharge using two key variables: the average price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel and the average exchange rate between the Japanese yen and the U.S. dollar during the applicable assessment period. For the July-August revision, the airline used an average exchange rate of ¥158.85 per U.S. dollar, translating the fuel price into a yen-denominated benchmark used to determine the surcharge band. The airlines review international fuel surcharges every two months, meaning the significant decline in fuel prices recorded during June and July is expected to be reflected in the September-October surcharge revision. If fuel prices remain near current levels, passengers purchasing tickets during that period are expected to benefit from lower fuel surcharges. The surcharge increase comes as international travelers to Japan are already facing higher travel-related costs introduced on July 1. Japan increased its international departure tax from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 (approximately US$18) per passenger, while visa fees rose from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 (around US$92), marking the first increase in visa charges since 1978. The combined effect of higher fuel surcharges, increased departure taxes and revised visa fees is expected to raise the overall cost of international travel to and from Japan during the peak summer travel season, even as global aviation fuel prices continue to decline. According to JAL, the current surcharge levels remain temporary and will continue to be reviewed under its bi-monthly pricing mechanism based on prevailing fuel market conditions and exchange rates.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore was delayed by nearly six hours on June 21 after the aircraft operating an earlier sector suffered a tyre-related incident upon arrival in Malaysia, marking the second such occurrence involving the same route this month. According to Singapore Airlines, two tyres on a Boeing 737-8 operating Flight SQ114 from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur deflated after landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on June 21. The incident occurred after the aircraft had completed its arrival into Kuala Lumpur. There were no reports of injuries. Because the aircraft could not continue normal operations, it was towed to a remote parking bay. All 152 passengers and eight crew members onboard SQ114 disembarked via buses and were transported to the terminal. The affected aircraft had been scheduled to operate the return service, Flight SQ113, from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore later the same day. However, the tyre damage rendered the aircraft unavailable, forcing Singapore Airlines to dispatch a replacement aircraft from Singapore. As a result, SQ113, carrying 143 passengers and eight crew members, departed Kuala Lumpur at 8:27 p.m. local time instead of its scheduled 2:35 p.m. departure. The flight was later delayed again, with Singapore Airlines citing adverse weather conditions in Singapore for the final postponement. Affected passengers were provided with refreshments, snack packs, meal vouchers and assistance with onward travel arrangements, including rebooking of connecting flights where necessary. Singapore Airlines apologized for the disruption, stating that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority. The airline also confirmed that the damaged tyres had been replaced and that the aircraft would return to service after the necessary maintenance actions. The June 21 occurrence follows another tyre-related incident involving the same Singapore-Kuala Lumpur service on June 13. On that occasion, Flight SQ114, also operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, experienced a double tyre burst during landing at KLIA at approximately 1:27 p.m. local time. The aircraft became disabled on the runway, prompting airport authorities to temporarily close one of KLIA's three runways. The sentence was delivered by a Singapore court on June 22, 2026, bringing to a close a case that began with an in-flight incident aboard a Singapore Airlines service operating from Bangkok, Thailand, to Singapore on February 9, 2026. Akash Tiwari, 35, pleaded guilty to one charge of molestation and one charge of harassment. In addition to the jail term, the court ordered him to pay S$1,270.95 in compensation to the victim. Court records showed that he would serve an additional five days in jail if the compensation is not paid. According to court proceedings, Tiwari was travelling with four friends on the Singapore-bound flight. Prosecutors told the court that the group behaved rowdily during the journey and repeatedly waved frantically and laughed whenever female cabin crew members walked past their seats. The incident began before departure from Bangkok when a female flight attendant approached the group to confirm their meal selections. During the interaction, Tiwari stretched out his arm and brushed against the flight attendant's left upper thigh. Prosecutors said he laughed immediately afterward, while his friends also laughed at the incident. Disturbed by the behavior, the flight attendant reported the matter to the chief stewardess. To avoid further contact, she was reassigned to another aisle to continue serving passengers. However, the misconduct continued later in the flight while the flight attendant was collecting meal trays. Prosecutors said Tiwari deliberately used his left elbow to make contact with her buttock. The crew member immediately told him not to touch her. Instead of apologizing, Tiwari reportedly smirked at her. The victim became increasingly distressed and again warned him to stop. The flight attendant subsequently informed the chief stewardess, and both crew members confronted Tiwari regarding the incident. Court documents stated that he remained unapologetic and insisted he had done nothing wrong. As the aircraft began preparations for arrival in Singapore, the captain made an announcement instructing the cabin crew to prepare for landing. The flight attendant then proceeded to the galley while the chief stewardess informed her supervisor and the captain about the incident. According to prosecutors, Tiwari then followed the flight attendant into the galley area. He stood extremely close to her despite being told to stay away. When the victim attempted to create distance, he moved even closer and cornered her inside the confined space. The victim repeatedly instructed him to stop following her and to keep away. Instead, prosecutors said he persisted with the threatening behavior, causing her significant distress. The flight attendant eventually left the galley and moved into the aisle, only to discover that Tiwari was continuing to follow her. Witnesses in the cabin observed the confrontation. She sought assistance from the chief stewardess once again. By that stage, she was reportedly in tears, visibly frightened, and shaking. Following the report from the cabin crew, the flight captain notified authorities ahead of arrival. After the aircraft landed at Singapore Changi Airport, officers from the Airport Police Division conducted follow-up investigations and arrested Tiwari. Singapore Police said they were alerted to the incident at approximately 4:27 p.m. on February 9. The case first entered the court system on March 17, 2026, when Tiwari was formally charged with using criminal force to outrage the modesty of the victim and with causing harassment, alarm, or distress through threatening behavior. At the time, he indicated that he intended to contest the allegations and plead not guilty. A pre-trial conference was subsequently scheduled for March 26. Court documents alleged that Tiwari deliberately used his body to make contact with the victim's buttock area and later followed her into the galley, cornered her in the confined space, and continued pursuing her after she attempted to leave. A gag order was imposed throughout the proceedings to protect the identity of the victim. During sentencing proceedings, prosecutors highlighted Tiwari's lack of remorse, noting that he smirked when confronted and remained unapologetic despite the victim's visible distress. On June 22, 2026, the court sentenced Tiwari to six months' imprisonment and ordered compensation of S$1,270.95 to the victim, consisting of compensation for emotional trauma and related expenses. The case has drawn significant attention in Singapore because it involved misconduct against airline cabin crew while operating aboard an international commercial flight. Singapore authorities reiterated that offenders who commit acts of molestation, harassment, and threatening behavior will be dealt with firmly under the law, whether such conduct occurs on an aircraft or elsewhere.

Delta Flight 1966 was operating a scheduled service from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to New York-JFK when concerns emerged regarding the aircraft’s nose landing gear during its approach into the airport. Initial reports received by emergency responders indicated that the inbound aircraft may have been experiencing issues involving its front tires, leading authorities to prepare for a potential emergency landing. According to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), a call was received at approximately 4:45 p.m. local time reporting that the aircraft had "two flat front tires." In response, the department initiated a precautionary second-alarm standby deployment, dispatching 46 units and 141 fire and emergency medical personnel to JFK Airport. The aircraft, an Airbus A321neo operated by Delta Air Lines, was carrying 170 passengers along with six crew members, consisting of two pilots and four flight attendants. Flight tracking data shows the aircraft landed safely at JFK at approximately 5:31 p.m. local time. "There was some damage to one tire, but not a major situation given the maintenance team determined the aircraft was suitable to continue taxiing over to the gate for the tire replacement rather than having to do so on the taxiway," Delta said in a statement. The airline added that the aircraft was able to taxi under its own power and that the emergency response proved largely precautionary.
