The strike involves approximately 4,400 cabin crew members represented by CUPE and follows months of contract negotiations centered on wages, compensation for duties performed on the ground, scheduling, and broader quality-of-life improvements. The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2025. WestJet said the work stoppage forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and significantly disrupted operations across its network. According to the airline, approximately 250,000 passengers have been affected by the disruption. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that more than 600 flights had been cancelled by Sunday morning, while FlightAware also recorded hundreds of cancellations across the carrier's network. The industrial action began after the union issued a 72-hour strike notice on July 30. WestJet responded with a lockout notice while both sides continued negotiations until shortly before the deadline. Despite last-minute bargaining efforts, no agreement was reached. At the center of the dispute is compensation for work performed before takeoff and after landing. CUPE argues that flight attendants should be paid from the time they report for duty until they complete their shifts, rather than primarily for time when the aircraft is in motion. The union maintains that pre-flight safety checks, boarding, passenger assistance, deplaning and other ground responsibilities deserve dedicated compensation. WestJet disputes the claim that this work is unpaid, stating that its existing "credit hour" compensation model already accounts for flight time, delays and various ground duties through a blended pay system rather than a conventional hourly wage. Following the start of the strike, WestJet publicly released details of what it described as its final contract proposal. The airline said the offer included a 13% wage increase effective October 2026, annual wage increases of 2.5% through 2029, retroactive pay to January 1, 2026, and additional compensation for all hours worked before and after flights, which it said represented an increase equivalent to approximately 12% of salary. The proposal also included higher meal allowances, expanded vacation benefits, annual health-care spending accounts, improved maternity leave provisions, scheduling enhancements, reduced maximum duty periods, additional rest time, and compensation for certain operational disruptions such as reassigned duties and hotel delays. WestJet Group Chief Executive Officer Alexis von Hoensbroech said the airline remained committed to reaching a negotiated settlement, describing the proposal as an industry-leading package that addressed the union's stated priorities while supporting the airline's long-term sustainability. He said the company believed an agreement remained achievable despite the strike. CUPE's WestJet Component President Alia Hussain said the union continued to seek a fair contract that properly recognizes the value of cabin crew work. She stated that members were prepared to return to the bargaining table and emphasized that compensation for unpaid ground duties remains a significant issue alongside broader contractual improvements. The dispute mirrors a wider movement among North American flight attendants seeking compensation for time spent working before aircraft doors close and after flights arrive at the gate. Similar disputes have recently taken place at Air Canada, where cabin crew secured boarding pay earlier this year following industrial action. In recent years, Delta Air Lines became the first major North American carrier to introduce dedicated boarding pay, with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines later implementing similar compensation models. WestJet currently operates under a credit-hour pay system, with compensation varying according to seniority. According to the airline, the structure combines flight hours and several non-flying duties into a single rate of pay rather than paying separately for each duty performed during a shift. The strike comes during a peak summer travel period and a three-day holiday weekend in Canada, increasing its impact on passengers and businesses. WestJet normally operates more than 600 flights daily and transports tens of thousands of passengers across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe. The airline holds roughly 30% of Canada's domestic aviation market. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce described the work stoppage as a significant disruption for travellers and businesses, warning that prolonged industrial action could affect tourism, supply chains and economic activity during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Canada's federal government acknowledged the disruption, with Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu expressing disappointment that negotiations failed to reach a settlement while reiterating that durable agreements are generally achieved through collective bargaining. As of publication, the government had not announced any formal intervention in the dispute. During the flight, smoke was reported onboard, prompting the crew to follow emergency procedures and divert the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport, Bangor International Airport (BGR) in Maine. Initial reports indicated that smoke had been detected in the forward section of the aircraft, with preliminary information suggesting a possible cockpit-related issue. However, after a technical investigation, SWISS determined that the source was an earphone charging case containing a lithium-ion battery. According to the airline, the charging case had slipped into a gap near a seat in the front Business Class cabin, where it became trapped and was damaged. The damage caused the device to emit smoke, creating a potential fire risk inside the cabin. SWISS highlighted that many personal electronic devices carried by passengers use lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat when damaged, malfunction, or become trapped, potentially leading to smoke or fire. The airline advised passengers to immediately inform cabin crew if an electronic device becomes unusually hot, damaged, or falls into an inaccessible area such as underneath a seat. Bhatia told PTI, "I think Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) needs a review, and I think there's enough conversation going on with the government. All we want to do is appeal to the government that we must follow the global best practices". Responding directly to Rahul Bhatia's recent comments, ALPA India argued that weakening or delaying fatigue management reforms would not resolve the industry's workforce challenges. The association further maintained that wage suppression has become another contributing factor behind the industry's pilot supply concerns. According to ALPA India, compensation structures and employment conditions at certain carriers discourage both retention and recruitment despite growing demand for pilots as Indian airlines continue expanding their fleets. ALPA India claimed that airline-backed cadet programmes require aspiring pilots to spend between ₹60 lakh and ₹1.25 crore on training, significantly higher than international type-rating programmes that typically cost around ₹20 lakh. The association further alleged that many cadets are bound by long-term employment agreements despite having no assurance of securing a job. ALPA India reiterated that pilot shortages cannot be attributed solely to duty-time regulations and emphasized that broader structural reforms are necessary. The association said reducing financial barriers for cadet pilots, ensuring competitive hiring practices and addressing employment-related concerns would help strengthen the long-term supply of qualified flight crew in India's rapidly expanding aviation market. Neither the Ministry of Civil Aviation nor the Competition Commission of India had publicly responded to ALPA India's latest appeal at the time of publication. Similarly, no fresh official statement from IndiGo responding specifically to ALPA India's latest remarks had been issued.

New Delhi, India: The investigation into the crash of Air India flight AI-171 has entered its final stages, with the government telling Parliament that an advanced examination of the aircraft’s fuel control switch and its locking mechanism found no abnormality. However, the inspection of the complete thrust control module remains underway at the original equipment manufacturer's facility in Seattle. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol provided the update during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in response to questions in the Rajya Sabha. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's response, the tests were ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as part of continuing airworthiness checks after the Boeing 787 aircraft type was grounded in February this year. "A detailed examination of the fuel control switch, including the structural integrity of its locking detents, found no abnormality," Mohol said. The government further stated: "Inspection of the complete Thrust Control Module at the OEM's facility is underway." The finding is significant because the movement of the two engine fuel control switches has been a central focus of the investigation into the June 12, 2025 crash, which happened shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The aircraft came down in the Meghani Nagar area, killing 260 people, including 241 of the 242 people aboard the aircraft and 19 people on the ground. One passenger survived the crash. The preliminary investigation found that both switches moved from the RUN position to CUT OFF shortly after takeoff, resulting in the loss of thrust from both engines. The preliminary report, however, did not establish why the switches moved or assign responsibility for the movement. The latest examination has so far found no abnormality in the locking mechanism of the fuel control switch. However, the government has not said that the investigation has established the cause of the switches moving to the CUTOFF position. The complete thrust control module is still being examined, and the outcome of that inspection remains awaited. The government also rejected suggestions that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has delayed the final report into the crash. Mohol said investigations into major air accidents do not follow a fixed timeline and that the AI-171 inquiry is progressing in accordance with established investigation procedures. "All probable causes and contributing factors leading to the accident are being investigated," the minister said. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the final investigation report will contain the findings of the probe and will be made public and uploaded on the AAIB's website once the investigation is completed. The preliminary report also noted that the aircraft had been certified as airworthy before the flight and that its maintenance records did not show a reported defect involving the fuel control switches. It also recorded that the aircraft's throttle control module had previously been replaced, although the replacements were unrelated to reported fuel-switch defects. The investigation subsequently drew international attention because the fuel control switches are part of the Boeing 787's thrust control system and are designed with locking mechanisms intended to prevent unintended movement. The latest government statement indicates that the structural integrity of the locking detents has now been examined and that no abnormality was identified in that specific component. However, the government has not yet released a final conclusion on what caused the switches to move during the AI-171 flight. The continuing inspection of the complete thrust control module is therefore an important remaining part of the technical examination. The AAIB's final report is expected to establish the complete sequence of events, identify the causes and contributing factors, and determine whether any safety recommendations are required. Until the final report is released, the precise cause of the fuel control switches moving to CUTOFF remains unresolved in the publicly available investigation findings. The latest government update therefore clears one specific area of concern: the fuel control switch locking mechanism but does not, by itself, close the wider question of why both switches moved to the CUTOFF position shortly after takeoff. The investigation remains ongoing, with the complete thrust control module examination and the AAIB's final assessment is still pending.

The downturn follows a profitable first quarter, when the three carriers collectively earned about RMB 4.8 billion ($710 million), supported by strong Lunar New Year travel demand, recovering international traffic and lower fuel prices. However, rising oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict reversed the recovery during the April-June period. Based on company filings, the three airlines are forecasting a combined first-half net loss between RMB 7.37 billion ($1.09 billion) and RMB 8.97 billion ($1.33 billion). The second-quarter loss is estimated at more than RMB 10 billion ($1.48 billion), effectively eliminating their first-quarter profits. Air China expects a first-half net loss of RMB 2.1 billion to RMB 2.6 billion ($293 million-$363 million). China Eastern Airlines has forecast a loss of RMB 3.5 billion to RMB 4 billion, while China Southern Airlines expects a loss between RMB 2.7 billion and RMB 3.3 billion. The losses mark a significant reversal from the first quarter. China Southern reported a first-quarter net profit of RMB 1.48 billion ($216 million), recovering from a RMB 747 million loss in the same period last year. Air China posted a RMB 1.71 billion profit compared with a RMB 2.04 billion loss a year earlier, while China Eastern recorded RMB 1.63 billion profit after a previous-year loss of RMB 995 million. Fuel costs emerged as the biggest pressure point for the carriers. Jet fuel remains the largest operating expense for airlines, typically accounting for around 30%-35% of total operating costs. The escalation in international crude oil prices pushed domestic jet fuel prices significantly higher, with April prices exceeding the previous record reached in July 2022. May fuel prices were reported to be twice the level recorded during the same period in 2025. The Middle East conflict that began in March triggered a rapid increase in oil prices. Industry executives highlighted fuel exposure as the primary impact on airline operations, with fuel prices in March reportedly rising sharply compared with January and February levels. Unlike many international carriers that use extensive fuel-hedging strategies to protect against price volatility, Chinese airlines hedge only a limited portion of their fuel consumption. This has left the country’s largest carriers more exposed to sudden increases in fuel prices, particularly because of their large fleets and extensive domestic and international networks. The impact has also been amplified by weaker passenger demand. Analysts noted that China’s slowing economic growth, adverse weather conditions and increasing competition from high-speed rail have affected domestic air travel demand. Domestic travel demand reportedly declined 6.2% in May, marking one of the weakest performances among major aviation markets. The difficult environment has also affected expectations for the summer travel season. July and August passenger numbers are projected to decline 3.6% year on year, while average daily flights and economy-class fares are expected to remain under pressure.

The fundraising comes as soaring aviation fuel prices, flight disruptions and longer routings have added financial pressure on airlines while Akasa continues its aggressive expansion strategy. Akasa plans to raise approximately ₹800 crore (US$84 million) through equity and at least ₹250 crore (US$26 million) through debt. The airline has approached both its existing shareholders and two new investors for the equity portion, while simultaneously holding discussions with state-run banks to secure debt financing under the Indian government's special credit line introduced to support airlines affected by the Iran conflict. The discussions remain private and the fundraising structure has not yet been finalized. For the equity raise, existing shareholders are expected to contribute around ₹500 crore (US$52.4 million), while the remaining ₹300 crore (US$31.4 million) is expected to come from one Asian investor and one American investor, according to the report. Akasa Air began operations in August 2022 under SNV Aviation Pvt. Ltd. The airline had already raised capital from investors in June 2025, but market conditions deteriorated following the conflict between Iran and the United States. The war disrupted international air travel, forced airlines to reroute flights around restricted airspace and drove up aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. Fuel typically accounts for around 40% of an airline's operating costs, significantly increasing financial pressure across the industry. The airline's fundraising reflects wider challenges confronting both Indian and global carriers. Tata Group-owned Air India recently reported its largest-ever annual loss and is seeking additional funding from its shareholders, including Singapore Airlines. Responding to reports of the fundraising, Akasa Air did not directly confirm the capital raise but said it looks forward to availing itself of the government's aviation credit line "as appropriate, to further strengthen our growth plans." SNV Aviation's shareholder base includes Akasa Air founder and Chief Executive Officer Vinay Dube, the family of late billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, a private equity fund managed by 360 ONE Asset Management, and other investors. Despite the challenging operating environment, Akasa has continued expanding more rapidly than most competitors. While overall airline capacity in India declined by 6% during March and April, Akasa increased its flight operations by 13.2% year-on-year, making it the only domestic carrier to significantly expand capacity during that period. The airline currently operates a fleet of 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. For the financial year ended 31 March 2026, Akasa reported a 37% increase in operating revenue, supported by 30% growth in available seat kilometres (ASKs). Chief Financial Officer Ankur Goel also announced last month that the airline plans to expand capacity by another 30% during FY2027, underscoring management's confidence in long-term demand despite current geopolitical and cost pressures. The proposed fundraising would provide Akasa with additional liquidity to support fleet expansion, network growth and working capital requirements while mitigating the impact of elevated fuel prices and operational disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
