Poland, Europe: Poland’s Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) , one of Europe’s most ambitious transport infrastructure projects, has reached a major milestone with the official approval of its passenger terminal design, moving the €30–32.5 billion development closer to construction. The government-backed mega hub is projected to handle up to 44 million passengers annually by 2032, with integrated high-speed rail links designed to transform regional and international connectivity. According to the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny company, the terminal and underground railway station design, developed by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, has been formally handed over and accepted. The documentation is now being prepared for submission to regional authorities to obtain building permits. The facility will span approximately 450,000 square meters, making it nearly three times the size of Warsaw Chopin Airport’s terminal. The three-level terminal layout will place check-in facilities and Schengen departures on the top level (+2), non-Schengen arrivals and transfer areas on level +1, and baggage reclaim alongside bus connections on the ground level. Initial capacity is set at 34 million passengers per year, with expansion potential to 44 million. The design also includes up to 67 aircraft stands, 140 check-in desks, and the ability to process up to 11,000 passengers per hour. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, starting with deep foundation works. The underground railway station and connecting tunnel are targeted for completion by 2029, with the entire airport planned to become operational by the end of 2032. A general contractor tender is currently open, while other tenders including for the baggage handling system are already in progress. The company anticipates awarding contracts worth nearly PLN 30 billion by the end of 2025. With an estimated total cost exceeding €30 billion, CPK is positioned as a direct competitor to hubs such as London Heathrow and Dubai International. The mega hub will integrate aviation, high-speed rail, and road networks, with almost 2,000 kilometers of new high-speed lines planned. Romania, Europe: A recreational ultralight aircraft crashed on Saturday, August 9, killing both men on board just minutes before reaching Arad International Airport. Authorities said the crash occurred in the yard of a recently closed industrial facility in Arad, western Romania. The two victims were identified as a 47-year-old professional pilot from Bucharest and an 18-year-old passenger from Arad. Both died instantly from severe impact injuries, emergency responders confirmed. The aircraft had departed from Siria airfield, located roughly 25 kilometers from Arad, and was approaching the airport when it went down only a few kilometers short of the runway. Witnesses told local media that the plane appeared to lose altitude abruptly before striking the ground. New Delhi, India: India’s youngest airline, Akasa Air, has completed three years of commercial operations and unveiled plans to expand its international footprint into South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region in the coming years. The Mumbai-based carrier, which operated its maiden flight on August 7, 2022, has grown into a network covering 28 destinations, 23 domestic and five international cities, including Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Doha, Riyadh, and Jeddah. The airline said it aims to leverage upcoming infrastructure at Navi Mumbai International Airport and Noida International Airport to deepen its domestic network and support long-haul regional routes. Akasa Air has carried more than 19 million passengers since inception, including over 8 million in the last 12 months alone. The airline has recorded a consistent load factor above 87 percent and completed over 100,000 departures more than 3,800 of which were international flights. In addition, the carrier has transported over 131,000 tonnes of cargo and secured partnerships with more than 1,150 corporate clients. The airline currently operates a fleet of 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 189- and 197-seat configurations. Orders include additional Boeing 737 MAX 8, MAX 200, and MAX 10 aircraft, which will be inducted over the next several years. Speaking to The Times of India Akasa Air founder and chief executive officer Vinay Dube said Boeing’s production output is “gradually returning to its historic production strength” after a prolonged slowdown, adding that this will allow the airline to receive deliveries on schedule and support its growth strategy. In the financial year ending March 2025, Akasa Air reported a 49 percent year-on-year increase in revenue and a 48 percent rise in available seat kilometres. The airline has set a target of increasing capacity by over 30 percent in the current fiscal year. The carrier also entered into a codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways in March 2025, enabling passengers to book combined itineraries across both networks. The partnership is expected to strengthen connectivity to the Middle East and beyond, while providing a platform for future route expansions into Southeast Asia. Industry analysts note that Akasa’s measured but ambitious growth contrasts with the more aggressive early expansions attempted by some of its predecessors in India’s low-cost segment. With South and Southeast Asia’s aviation markets projected to grow significantly in the next decade, Akasa Air’s entry into these regions could place it in direct competition with established carriers such as AirAsia, Batik Air, SriLankan Airlines, and Malindo Air. Romania, Europe: A recreational ultralight aircraft crashed on Saturday, August 9, killing both men on board just minutes before reaching Arad International Airport. Authorities said the crash occurred in the yard of a recently closed industrial facility in Arad, western Romania. The two victims were identified as a 47-year-old professional pilot from Bucharest and an 18-year-old passenger from Arad. Both died instantly from severe impact injuries, emergency responders confirmed. The aircraft had departed from Siria airfield, located roughly 25 kilometers from Arad, and was approaching the airport when it went down only a few kilometers short of the runway. Witnesses told local media that the plane appeared to lose altitude abruptly before striking the ground. The collision impact tore the aircraft apart, with parts scattered across the courtyard of the disused factory, which has been closed since June. Rescue teams found the engine several meters away from the fuselage. Security staff stationed at the site were the first to call emergency services. No injuries were reported on the ground. The Romanian Civil Aviation Safety Investigation and Analysis Center (CIAS) has launched a full inquiry into the cause of the accident.
