New Delhi, India: Thousands of aviation employees at SpiceJet, including a significant number of pilots, continue to face salary delays stretching back several months as the financially troubled airline seeks emergency government-backed funding to stabilize operations and restore cash flow. According to internal communications reviewed by Reuters, many SpiceJet pilots have not received full salary payments since March 2026, highlighting the severity of the airline's ongoing liquidity challenges. The issue has sparked growing concerns among employees, some of whom reportedly struggle to meet daily expenses and financial commitments. SpiceJet employed approximately 375 pilots as of March 2026, and internal discussions reviewed by Reuters indicate that salary payments have remained pending for several months for many of them. Communications from a pilots' WhatsApp group involving more than 180 members revealed growing frustration over delayed wages. In one message dated May 26, SpiceJet's Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, Virendra Malhotra, acknowledged the difficulties faced by employees due to delayed salary disbursements and indicated that the remaining portion of February salaries would be released shortly. Pilots subsequently sought clarity regarding payments for March, April, and May salaries, which remained outstanding at the time. Several employees reportedly stated that delayed payments had created financial hardship, forcing some to seek assistance from family members and friends to manage essential expenses. SpiceJet acknowledged that salary disbursements had been delayed but stated that employee payments were being released in phases. According to the airline, a majority of employees had already received March salaries, while efforts continued to clear outstanding dues. The carrier maintained that employee payments remained a priority and that all obligations would be honored. As it attempts to navigate the crisis, SpiceJet is actively pursuing funding under India's Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS). The government-backed program allows eligible airlines to access seven-year guaranteed loans of up to ₹1,500 crore ($157.2 million USD). Reports also indicate that SpiceJet has sought additional funding of approximately ₹2,000 crore ($210 million USD) under the scheme as it attempts to strengthen liquidity and support day-to-day operations. The airline said it expects business conditions to normalize over the coming months and described the funding effort as part of broader measures aimed at restoring operational stability. SpiceJet's current financial stress stems from a combination of long-term and recent challenges. The airline was India's second-largest domestic carrier in 2019, commanding roughly 15% of the market. However, its market share has since declined dramatically to approximately 3.4%, placing it fourth among Indian airlines.. The airline has reported annual losses almost every year since 2019, with the exception of FY2024-25, when it posted a small profit largely driven by one-time gains from settlements with aircraft lessors. SpiceJet currently operates an active fleet of approximately 21 aircraft. The carrier declined scheduled flights from 4,494 flights in January 2026 to 3,053 flights in May 2026, according to aviation analytics firm OAG. The airline's financial struggles have also weighed heavily on investor confidence, with its share price reportedly falling around 60% during 2026. At least two aircraft lessors have reportedly issued payment default notices to the airline this year, reflecting continuing concerns about its financial position. Despite the challenges, SpiceJet has taken steps to expand available capacity. The airline recently returned a Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to commercial service and finalized lease arrangements for three Airbus A320 aircraft scheduled to join the fleet in July. Toronto, Canada: A former Air Canada captain has been charged with multiple fraud-related offences after Canadian authorities alleged that he operated more than 900 commercial flights over nearly 17 years without holding the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) required to command large passenger aircraft. Peel Regional Police said Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, Ontario, was arrested on June 1 following a months-long fraud and forgery investigation known as Project Icarus. Investigators allege Wall served as an Air Canada captain between 2009 and 2025 while using fraudulent licensing documents to misrepresent his qualifications to both the airline and federal regulators. According to police, Wall held a valid Commercial Pilot Licence but did not possess the ATPL required under Canadian aviation regulations for airline captains. Authorities allege he commanded more than 900 domestic and international flights during that period, carrying tens of thousands of passengers aboard Air Canada's Boeing 767, 777 and 787 aircraft while earning approximately CAD 2.9 million in salary. Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said investigators believe Wall had been "misrepresenting himself and his credentials" to his employer and regulators for years using fraudulent licensing documents. He compared the situation to "a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain surgery in their office." Wall now faces charges including fraud over CAD 5,000, two counts of uttering forged documents, three counts of possession of counterfeit marks and one count of public mischief. Police also allege he filed a false report regarding supposedly stolen pilot documentation during the course of the investigation. The criminal case follows earlier regulatory action by Transport Canada, which determined that Wall had operated aircraft without the licence required for a captain and imposed monetary penalties. The regulatory review eventually uncovered irregularities in his licensing records and prompted authorities to refer the matter to police for further investigation. Air Canada said the issue was discovered during a review of pilot documentation and that Wall was immediately removed from active flying duties once concerns about his licensing status emerged. In a statement, Air Canada said, "Safety was not compromised by this incident because all pilots at Air Canada undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months to validate their flying competency." The carrier added that Wall had successfully completed all required recurrent training, simulator checks and competency evaluations throughout his employment. The airline further stated that "appropriate licensing is an essential layer of the airline industry's multi-layered approach to safety" and emphasized that it treats the matter with the utmost seriousness. Air Canada said it conducted a comprehensive audit of its pilot workforce following the discovery and found no other cases of licensing non-compliance. The carrier also strengthened its licence-verification procedures, including additional checks of original Transport Canada-issued documents. Police described the case as highly unusual, with Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah calling the allegations "deeply concerning" because they strike "at the heart of public trust and safety." Authorities noted that the investigation involved extensive reviews of aviation records, licensing documents and regulatory filings. While Air Canada maintains that passenger safety was not compromised because of the pilot's demonstrated flying competency and repeated proficiency checks, investigators allege the case represents a long-running deception involving forged credentials and regulatory violations.

Belgrade, Serbia: Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has launched an unprecedented public attack on Serbian authorities, alleging that newly adopted aviation regulations are designed to force the airline to shut down its Belgrade base from November 2026, a move it says would violate European aviation agreements, reduce competition, and threaten jobs. In a strongly worded statement released on June 3, Wizz Air claimed that Serbian authorities are attempting to introduce measures that would effectively prevent foreign airlines from maintaining base operations in the country unless they are Serbian operators. The airline argues that the changes amount to a protectionist policy intended to shield state-backed national carrier Air Serbia from competition. According to Wizz Air, the proposed measures would make it impossible for the airline to continue operating its Belgrade base under its current business model despite having maintained a presence in Serbia for more than 15 years. The airline said it has invested hundreds of millions of euros in Serbia since launching operations in 2010 and has carried more than 14 million passengers to and from the country. Wizz Air currently operates 29 routes linking Belgrade with 26 destinations across 10 countries and maintains one of the largest low-cost carrier networks in the Serbian market. New Delhi, India: Low-cost carrier SpiceJet is facing renewed legal pressure after France-based aircraft engine lessor Sunbird France 02 SAS approached the Delhi High Court to enforce a UK Commercial Court judgment directing the airline to pay nearly $8 million in unpaid lease rentals and maintenance dues related to three aircraft engines. The enforcement proceedings mark the latest chapter in a long-running dispute between the airline and the French lessor, adding to SpiceJet’s growing list of legal and financial challenges. According to court filings, the dispute concerns three aircraft engines leased to SpiceJet in 2019. Sunbird alleges that the airline failed to meet its payment obligations under the lease agreements, resulting in substantial outstanding lease rentals and maintenance accruals. The unpaid maintenance charges reportedly date back to November 2020, while unpaid lease rentals accumulated from January 2022 onward. After issuing default notices in July 2022, the lessor eventually repossessed the engines in stages, taking back two engines in December 2022 and the third in July 2023. Following the repossession, Sunbird initiated legal proceedings before the Commercial Court of England and Wales, seeking recovery of unpaid rent and maintenance charges linked to the three engines. On March 13, 2026, the London Commercial Court granted summary judgment in favour of Sunbird France 02 SAS, awarding approximately US$7.96 million. The court concluded that SpiceJet had no realistic prospect of successfully defending the claim. The UK court also recorded that although SpiceJet had initially appointed solicitors in the matter and had been properly served, it ultimately did not file a defence or participate in the proceedings. As a result, the court proceeded to issue judgment without a full trial. With the UK ruling remaining unpaid, Sunbird moved the Delhi High Court seeking recognition and enforcement of the foreign decree in India. The matter came up before Justice Vikas Mahajan, where Sunbird argued that the English judgment satisfies the requirements for enforcement under Indian law and should be executed against the airline's assets. The lessor sought urgent interim protection from the court, expressing concerns over SpiceJet’s financial condition and the possibility that recovery efforts could become more difficult if the airline’s financial position deteriorates further. During the proceedings, Sunbird's legal team pointed to multiple insolvency-related proceedings pending against SpiceJet before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The lessor argued that disclosure of assets was necessary to safeguard its interests while enforcement proceedings continue. The Delhi High Court subsequently directed SpiceJet to disclose its assets through an affidavit to be submitted in a sealed cover. The court granted the lessor liberty to seek urgent relief during the court vacation if circumstances warrant such action. Sunbird also referred to reports concerning advance salary payments allegedly made to SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh while lease-related liabilities remained outstanding. The lessor cited these reports while arguing for interim protection measures. SpiceJet opposed immediate coercive measures and resisted demands for asset disclosure at the initial stage. Senior counsel representing the airline argued that SpiceJet remains a functioning airline and should not be treated as an entity attempting to evade its obligations. The airline informed the court that it continues to operate approximately 135 flights daily, carries around 21,000 passengers each day and employs nearly 6,400 personnel. SpiceJet maintained that any aggressive recovery action could adversely affect operations and stakeholders. The carrier also raised objections relating to the maintainability and enforceability of the execution proceedings, contending that those issues should be decided before any substantive interim relief is granted. The latest dispute emerges against the backdrop of SpiceJet's broader financial difficulties. The airline has spent the past several years dealing with the effects of the Boeing 737 MAX grounding, disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, increased competition in the domestic market and multiple legal battles involving aircraft lessors, creditors and other claimants. The Sunbird matter is not the first legal confrontation between the parties. Court records show that disputes involving Sunbird France and affiliated lessor Team France had been ongoing since at least 2023 over alleged defaults under engine lease agreements. Earlier proceedings before Indian courts involved payment schedules, settlement discussions, repossession disputes and court-monitored arrangements intended to allow SpiceJet to continue operating leased engines while resolving outstanding dues. Despite those efforts, the dispute eventually escalated into proceedings before the UK Commercial Court, culminating in the March 2026 judgment now being pursued in India. As the case enters the enforcement stage, the Delhi High Court is expected to examine whether the foreign judgment satisfies statutory requirements for execution in India and whether any interim protective measures are warranted pending final adjudication. For now, the court has directed SpiceJet to place details of its assets on record in a sealed cover, while Sunbird continues its efforts to recover the amount awarded by the UK court.
