Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia's national flag carrier Saudia has firmly denied media and social media reports alleging that Boeing 777-200 aircraft formerly owned by the airline were transferred to an airline subject to international sanctions, stating that the aircraft were legally sold more than three years ago and that it has had no involvement with them since the transaction was completed. The clarification came after reports emerged suggesting that several retired Boeing 777-200 aircraft previously operated by Saudia had ultimately surfaced with a sanctioned carrier, prompting speculation over the ownership chain and compliance with international sanctions. While the airline did not identify the operator referenced in the reports, industry publications have linked the aircraft to an Iranian carrier that is subject to U.S. and international sanctions. In an official statement published on its X (formerly Twitter) account, Saudia said the aircraft in question were sold on June 7, 2023, to a company registered outside Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that the transaction was completed "in accordance with all applicable commercial and legal procedures." The airline categorically rejected any suggestion that it had transferred the aircraft directly to a sanctioned entity. "Since the completion of the sale, Saudia has had no operational or commercial relationship with the aircraft." The carrier added that it has had no operational, commercial or ownership connection with the aircraft since the sale was finalized. However, it did not disclose the identity of the purchasing company or provide additional information regarding subsequent ownership or transfers. The statement was issued after widespread online reports claimed that former Saudia Boeing 777-200 aircraft had entered the fleet of an airline operating under international sanctions. The airline stressed that any subsequent movement, resale or operation of the aircraft occurred independently after the lawful completion of the 2023 sale. Industry reporting has identified the aircraft involved as retired Boeing 777-200ER jets that previously served in Saudia's long-haul fleet before being phased out as part of the airline's fleet modernization programme. Over recent years, Saudia has progressively replaced older Boeing 777-200 aircraft with newer-generation Airbus and Boeing widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and newer Boeing 777 variants. Separate aviation industry reports indicate that at least five former Saudi Boeing 777-200ER aircraft have reportedly appeared in Iran after passing through intermediary ownership arrangements outside Saudi Arabia. Those reports have suggested that the aircraft changed hands through companies registered in third countries before ultimately reaching the sanctioned operator. However, Saudia has neither confirmed those reports nor commented on the aircraft's ownership after their June 2023 sale, maintaining that its involvement ended when the transaction was completed. London, United Kingdom: British low-cost carrier easyJet has agreed in principle to a sweetened takeover proposal from the U.S.-based investment firm Castlelake, valuing the airline at up to £5.5 billion (US$7.3 billion). If completed, the transaction would take one of Europe's largest budget airlines private and mark one of the aviation sector's biggest deals in recent years. The latest proposal values easyJet at 690 pence per share, representing a 73% premium over the airline's closing share price on 29 May 2026, the day Castlelake publicly disclosed its interest under UK takeover rules. The easyJet board said the revised proposal is at a level that it would be minded to recommend to shareholders if a firm offer is made, marking a significant shift after previously rejecting four lower bids. The agreement follows more than a month of negotiations. Castlelake initially revealed its interest in late May before progressively increasing its offers from 560p, 600p, 625p, and 650p per share, all of which were rejected by easyJet's board as materially undervaluing the airline. After rejecting the fourth proposal, the airline granted Castlelake limited access to commercial information, allowing the investor to conduct due diligence and improve its offer. Under the UK Takeover Code, Castlelake must submit a firm intention to make an offer by 3 August 2026, or withdraw unless an extension is granted by the UK's takeover regulator. The Minneapolis-based investment firm manages approximately US$38 billion in assets, leases aircraft to airlines including Qantas and Etihad Airways, and previously participated in the restructuring of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). Analysts believe Castlelake's expertise in aircraft financing makes easyJet's fleet, aircraft order book and airport slot portfolio particularly attractive. Beyond its fleet, easyJet owns some of Europe's most valuable take-off and landing slots, particularly at capacity-constrained airports including London Gatwick, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly and Geneva, assets that would be extremely difficult to replicate under current airport capacity restrictions. The airline's rapidly expanding easyJet Holidays business is also viewed as an important strategic asset capable of generating higher-margin revenue. One of the biggest hurdles facing the transaction is compliance with European Union airline ownership rules, which require EU airlines to remain majority owned and effectively controlled by EU nationals. To satisfy those regulations, Castlelake has proposed a structure in which it would own 49% of the acquisition vehicle while the remaining 51% would be held by European investors. The consortium includes former easyJet Chief Operating Officer and former Malaysia Airlines CEO Peter Bellew and aviation executive Mark Breen, former CEO of Arajet. Despite the board's support for the latest proposal, investors continue to price in execution risk. Following the announcement, easyJet shares climbed around 10%, reaching their highest level in almost four years. However, the stock continued trading well below the proposed 690p offer price, reflecting uncertainty surrounding financing, regulatory approvals, shareholder backing and the possibility of competing bids. Analysts at JPMorgan and other investment firms have said that while the revised proposal significantly improves the likelihood of a successful transaction, important details regarding funding arrangements and governance remain undisclosed. Some market observers have also suggested that rival airline groups could still emerge, although regulatory constraints would make any acquisition by another major European airline difficult. Lufthansa has been mentioned as a potential suitor but is currently focused on other acquisitions, while Wizz Air has also been cited, though analysts question whether it has the financial capacity for such a purchase. The position of easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, whose family controls approximately 15% of the airline, is expected to be closely watched. He has not publicly indicated whether he intends to support the proposal, and his stance could prove influential during the shareholder approval process. The proposed acquisition comes against a challenging backdrop for the airline industry. $Singapore: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has increased the number of female pilots across its operations by 25% over the past five years, marking steady progress in gender diversity within one of Asia's leading airline groups. Despite the increase, women continue to make up only a small fraction of the airline's pilot workforce, underscoring the aviation industry's ongoing challenge in attracting more women to the flight deck. The figures were disclosed in the SIA Group Sustainability Report, which tracks workforce diversity and other environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets. The SIA Group comprises full-service carrier Singapore Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary Scoot. According to the latest data, the SIA Group now employs 102 female pilots out of a total pilot workforce of 3,676, reflecting a 25% increase over the past five years. The airline group also reported an overall workforce of 21,667 employees as of March 31, a 3.1% increase year-on-year. Of these, 11,332 are cabin crew, including 7,471 women, meaning women account for slightly more than half of the group's total workforce. While the increase represents a significant milestone, female representation in the cockpit remains limited. Historical sustainability reports show a gradual upward trend in the share of women pilots across the SIA Group: FY2021-22: 1.4% FY2022-23: 1.6% FY2023-24: 1.9% (61 female pilots among 3,245 pilots) The latest figures indicate continued growth, although women still account for 2.8% of the SIA Group's 3,676 pilots. The increase illustrates that percentage gains can appear substantial even when starting from a relatively small base. Singapore Airlines only began accepting women into its cadet pilot programme in April 2016, making it one of the later major Asian carriers to open its pilot training pathway to female applicants. The airline recruited its first two female cadets that year. At the time, SIA said recruitment would continue to be based solely on selecting the most qualified candidates rather than gender. Prior to 2016, women aspiring to become pilots often had to pursue alternative career paths, including joining other airlines or funding their own commercial flight training. Because airline cadet training typically takes two to three years, followed by several additional years to accumulate the experience required for command positions, many of the women who entered the programme after 2016 are only now progressing into more senior cockpit roles. The increase in female pilots forms part of broader workforce diversity objectives outlined by the SIA Group. Singapore Airlines had set a target of achieving a 25% increase in female pilots from FY2020-21 levels by FY2025-26, while Scoot established a similar target using 2021 as its baseline. According to the latest sustainability report, Singapore Airlines achieved its target, whereas Scoot did not fully meet its corresponding goal. The airline also established leadership diversity targets. Scoot achieved its objective of increasing women in director-level and higher positions by at least 25% from 2021 levels. However, Singapore Airlines fell short of its goal of having women comprise at least 25% of vice-president-level and above leadership positions by the end of FY2025-26, citing staff attrition and internal workforce movements. SIA emphasised that recruitment and promotion decisions continue to be based on a holistic assessment of role requirements, candidate capability and overall suitability, rather than quotas. The gradual rise in female pilots has been supported by pioneering aviators who entered the profession through unconventional routes. Among them is Captain Vanessa Khaw, who began her aviation career as a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member in 2004. Inspired by time spent observing flight operations from the cockpit during meal service, she later self-funded her commercial pilot training, joined Tigerair in 2010, transitioned to Scoot following the airlines' merger, and now serves as an Airbus A320/A321 captain and flight instructor training new pilots. Another example is Senior First Officer Lim Wen Shan, who previously flew C-130 transport aircraft with the Republic of Singapore Air Force before transitioning to commercial aviation in 2019. Despite steady progress, aviation continues to face a significant gender imbalance globally. The SIA Group's latest figures highlight gradual but measurable progress toward improving representation in one of aviation's most male-dominated professions, while also demonstrating the considerable distance still to be covered before gender balance in airline cockpits becomes commonplace.$

London, United Kingdom: Europe's largest low-cost carrier, Ryanair, has changed its long-standing family seating policy, allowing parents travelling with young children to sit together without paying a mandatory seat reservation fee. The move follows an investigation launched earlier this month by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into whether the airline's previous practice breached consumer protection laws. The revised policy took effect on Thursday, June 25, 2026, the same day Ryanair publicly announced the changes. While the airline maintains that its previous policy complied with all applicable laws and regulations, it said it would "reluctantly" adopt what it described as the industry standard rather than continue arguing with regulators. Under the updated policy, families who choose not to purchase reserved seats will receive complimentary seat allocations after completing online check-in. Ryanair said these free seats will generally be located toward the rear of the aircraft, where more seats are available. Passengers who prefer specific seats, including those closer to the front of the cabin, can still pay the usual seat reservation fee. The airline said the change would be revenue neutral, adding that it does not expect any financial impact from the revised seating arrangement. Before the change, Ryanair required at least one accompanying adult travelling with children aged 2 to 11 years to purchase what it called a "mandatory family seat." That adult paid a discounted reserved seat fee typically around £8 (US$10.70) per flight sector, according to the CMA while up to four children on the same booking could reserve adjacent seats free of charge. Ryanair argued that the policy ensured families knew their seating arrangements at the time of booking while maintaining the airline's low-fare model. The carrier also emphasized that it never charged children to sit beside their accompanying adult, only the adult reservation. The policy change came just two weeks after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced, on June 11, that it was investigating whether Ryanair's mandatory family seating fee amounted to an unfair contract term under UK consumer law. The regulator questioned whether parents were effectively being charged for the airline to meet its own obligations under aviation safety and disability rules, since Ryanair's own conditions required at least one parent to sit with children between the ages of two and eleven. The CMA also noted that additional fees could significantly increase the cost of holidays for families already budgeting carefully for travel. Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary was openly critical of the regulatory pressure that led to the change. In the company's announcement, he said,"We will reluctantly adjust to this industry standard as we don't want to waste time explaining to misguided regulators how badly they misunderstand what is in the best interest of UK and Europe's consumers." O'Leary defended Ryanair's previous model, arguing it had been "the most progressive and transparent in Europe." He also accused regulators of focusing on Ryanair while overlooking broader issues affecting consumers, including higher fares charged by airlines operating without low-cost competition, airport monopoly charges, and inefficiencies in European air traffic management. According to O'Leary, the revised policy would not increase consumer welfare but merely align Ryanair with competitors' seating practices. Although the CMA welcomed the airline's decision, it stressed that the investigation has not concluded. A CMA spokesperson said the regulator would examine whether Ryanair's updated policy fully complies with consumer law. The authority added that while the revised policy appears to benefit families by removing mandatory seating charges, it does not change the fact that passengers had previously been required to pay for so-called mandatory family seats. The watchdog confirmed that Ryanair chose to amend its policy voluntarily and that the ongoing investigation will continue assessing the legality of the airline's previous practices.
