The incident occurred on February 2, 2024, at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, a defence-operated airport that handles both military and civilian aircraft movements. The Air India aircraft, operating flight AI788 from Port Blair to Kolkata, came into close proximity with an Indian Navy ALH Mk III helicopter during departure operations, prompting an evasive manoeuvre by the helicopter crew to avoid a potential collision. According to the AAIB final report, the Air India Airbus A319, registered VT-SCV, had departed Runway 04 after receiving clearance from Air Traffic Control, while the Navy helicopter was simultaneously conducting a training sortie in the north-east local flying area. The helicopter crew had been carrying out a localiser approach procedure when the conflict developed between the two aircraft. Investigators stated that the approach controller allowed both aircraft to operate within conflicting airspace during a critical phase of flight, leading to rapidly reducing separation between the departing Airbus and the inbound helicopter. The helicopter subsequently received a Traffic Advisory warning from its onboard collision avoidance system, alerting the crew to the developing risk. The Navy pilots immediately initiated a sharp right turn to avoid crossing the Airbus’ climb path. Following the evasive manoeuvre, the helicopter discontinued its approach and safely recovered back at base, while the Air India aircraft continued its climb and proceeded normally toward Kolkata. The AAIB classified the occurrence as a “serious incident” and launched a full investigation under India’s Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules. In its findings, the bureau concluded that the probable cause of the incident was the “inadequate assessment of the traffic situation by the approach controller,” which resulted in reduced separation and dangerous proximity between the two aircraft. The investigation also identified communication-related concerns involving the Air India cockpit crew. According to the report, the Pilot-in-Command engaged in what investigators described as “undue conversation” with Air Traffic Control during a critical stage of flight, contributing to unnecessary radio frequency congestion. The AAIB recommended that Air India reinforce proper radio telephony discipline among its pilots. Apart from the immediate operational factors, the report highlighted broader systemic concerns regarding aviation safety coordination between civil and military authorities in India. The bureau noted that there is currently no formal framework for regular exchange of safety-related information between the AAIB, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Army, despite repeated recommendations issued after previous military aviation investigations. The report referenced earlier incidents involving aircraft VT-MPQ at Gwalior in 2021 and VT-PTE at Umari in 2023, where similar coordination gaps had already been identified. Investigators observed that several earlier safety recommendations remain pending implementation. To address the risks identified during the Port Blair incident investigation, the AAIB issued multiple safety recommendations. These include establishing a formal civil-defence aviation coordination mechanism, reviewing DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements involving military aircraft and defence aerodromes, improving Air Traffic Control coordination procedures at joint-use airports, strengthening radio communication discipline and installing a secondary surveillance radar system at Port Blair to support safer traffic management as aircraft movements continue increasing in the region. The bureau stressed that stronger integration between civilian and military aviation systems is becoming increasingly important as mixed-use airports handle higher traffic volumes and more complex operations.

Florida, United States: A training aircraft belonging to Florida-based flight school Aamro Aviation was involved in an emergency forced landing Friday afternoon after a reported engine malfunction caused the aircraft to crash into a field near Hobe Sound, Florida, authorities said. According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. west of Interstate 95 near Hobe Sound. Deputies and Martin County Fire Rescue crews responded after the aircraft went down in an open dirt field following an apparent loss of engine power. Both occupants, a flight instructor and a student pilot survived the crash and escaped without serious injuries. The aircraft involved was identified as a 2023-built Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP registered as N294PL. The aircraft sustained “substantial damage” during the forced landing after experiencing engine power loss near Tailwinds Airport (FD15). Flight tracking data showed the aircraft departed from North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport before the emergency unfolded. Guadeloupe, France: French Caribbean regional carrier Air Antilles has officially ceased operations after a commercial court in Guadeloupe ordered the airline into judicial liquidation, bringing an end to more than two decades of inter-island services across the Caribbean. The Mixed Commercial Court of Pointe-à-Pitre on April 27, 2026, ordered the immediate cessation of all activities after rejecting multiple takeover proposals submitted during the airline’s restructuring process. The court ruled that none of the offers provided sufficient guarantees to ensure the long-term survival of the company or preserve employment. The liquidation concludes months of financial and operational turmoil for the Guadeloupe-based airline, which had already suspended flights in December 2025 after French aviation authorities grounded the carrier over deficiencies identified during a safety and operational audit. The suspension of the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) halted all commercial activity at the height of the Caribbean tourist season, cutting off the airline’s primary revenue stream. Air Antilles later filed for insolvency with the Pointe-à-Pitre court in January 2026, citing its inability to meet financial obligations following the regulatory suspension. In February, the court placed the airline under a six-month court-supervised restructuring procedure instead of immediate liquidation, giving management time to secure investors, restore its operating certificate, and present a recovery plan. Despite several rescue attempts, administrators overseeing the process concluded that continued operations were no longer viable. According to court documents, three takeover bids were examined but ultimately rejected due to insufficient financial guarantees, limited employee retention commitments, and uncertainty surrounding future regulatory approvals. One proposal reportedly sought to rehire only about 12 percent of the workforce, while another targeted only selected assets without preserving jobs. The collapse leaves approximately 116 employees without jobs and further disrupts regional connectivity across the French Caribbean. Air Antilles had operated essential short-haul services linking Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy, Dominica, Saint Lucia, and other nearby islands, routes often considered critical where ferry travel is impractical or time-consuming. The airline’s shutdown highlights the fragile economics of regional aviation in the Caribbean, where small operators face high operating costs, limited passenger demand, regulatory pressure, and dependence on seasonal tourism traffic. The disappearance of Air Antilles is expected to reduce competition on several routes and could lead to higher fares and reduced connectivity for residents and travelers. Founded in 2002 as Air Antilles Express, the carrier later rebranded as Air Antilles and expanded regional operations using ATR turboprop aircraft and DHC-6 Twin Otters. After the collapse of parent group CAIRE in 2023, the airline was partially revived under a public-private structure backed by the Collectivity of Saint Martin and infrastructure company EDEIS. Local authorities reportedly injected more than €20 million into the airline in an effort to sustain operations and protect regional air links. At the time of its closure, the airline’s fleet reportedly included ATR 72s, an ATR 42, and a DHC-6 Twin Otter. Court proceedings also extended to associated aircraft-holding entities tied to the carrier’s fleet.
