According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas near Morón, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. Seismologists described the event as a rare seismic doublet. More than 20 aftershocks were recorded in the hours that followed. The earthquakes caused extensive damage across the capital and nearby states, with multiple residential and commercial buildings collapsing, roads and transportation infrastructure disrupted, and emergency crews deployed throughout affected areas. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced a state of emergency during a televised address alongside National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. He did not provide further details on the scale of the attack or potential damage but said emergency services had been dispatched to locations where drone debris fell. Russia's aviation watchdog, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted operations at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports as a safety precaution during the attack. The agency later announced that flight operations had resumed after authorities determined conditions were safe. Officials did not immediately disclose how long the restrictions remained in effect or whether flights were delayed or cancelled. At roughly the same time, Russia carried out drone attacks on Ukraine, including strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Odessa. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported on Telegram,“Throughout the night and morning of June 22, 2026, the Russians struck civilian infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Another seven people were injured, including an 11-year-old boy.” The attack targeted civilian infrastructure in the southeastern Ukrainian city, with emergency services responding to the scene as authorities assessed the full extent of the damage. The latest drone assault comes only days after Ukraine carried out a renewed strike on Moscow's only oil refinery, one of the region's most important fuel-production facilities. It highlighted that increasing passenger volumes, geopolitical uncertainty, climate pressures, and operational constraints are creating a need for coordinated policy reform at the global level. The organisation stressed that without timely intervention, capacity bottlenecks and inefficiencies could emerge across major airport systems worldwide. At the core of the Policy Agenda 2030 is a call to reposition airports as strategic economic assets rather than purely infrastructure operators. Mumbai, India: A minor fire broke out at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 1 in Mumbai on the evening of April 9, 2026, leading to smoke accumulation inside parts of the terminal and temporary disruption for passengers. The incident occurred around 6:10 PM and was traced to an electrical short circuit in the ground-floor utility and power distribution area near the 1B section of the terminal. According to airport and civic officials, the fire originated in electrical cable trays and power supply installations located in a restricted service zone of Terminal 1. The affected area is understood to house critical electrical infrastructure, including wiring ducts and distribution panels. The blaze did not spread beyond the utility section but generated heavy smoke, which quickly seeped into adjoining passenger areas. Thick smoke was reported across parts of the terminal building, including nearby check-in and movement zones, causing brief confusion among passengers and congestion at several points. The delays were mainly attributed to temporary ground handling constraints, including passenger movement, baggage processing, and gate allocation, as emergency protocols were implemented in the affected terminal area. Airport officials also confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported. Emergency protocols ensured that passengers were kept away from affected areas, and no evacuation of the entire terminal was required. Key systems in the affected zone, including electrical supply and certain communication infrastructure, were temporarily shut down as a precaution and restored after safety clearance.
