Mumbai, India: A minor fire broke out at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 1 in Mumbai on the evening of April 9, 2026, leading to smoke accumulation inside parts of the terminal and temporary disruption for passengers. The incident occurred around 6:10 PM and was traced to an electrical short circuit in the ground-floor utility and power distribution area near the 1B section of the terminal. According to airport and civic officials, the fire originated in electrical cable trays and power supply installations located in a restricted service zone of Terminal 1. The affected area is understood to house critical electrical infrastructure, including wiring ducts and distribution panels. The blaze did not spread beyond the utility section but generated heavy smoke, which quickly seeped into adjoining passenger areas. Thick smoke was reported across parts of the terminal building, including nearby check-in and movement zones, causing brief confusion among passengers and congestion at several points. While the fire remained confined to the technical section, visibility in some areas of the terminal was affected, prompting precautionary movement restrictions within Terminal 1. The airport’s emergency response system was activated immediately, with on-site fire and rescue teams responding first, followed by multiple units from the Mumbai Fire Brigade. Firefighting operations focused on isolating the electrical source and preventing the spread of flames through cable networks. Officials later confirmed that the fire was brought under control within minutes, while cooling and safety checks continued for several hours before the situation was fully normalised. Authorities classified the incident as a minor or Level-1 fire. Preliminary assessments indicate that the cause was a short circuit in electrical wiring and power systems. The fire was fully extinguished by around 9:20 PM, after thorough cooling operations and inspection of affected infrastructure. Despite airport authorities stating that overall flight operations remained largely unaffected and runway movements continued normally, the incident led to short-term operational impact during the evening peak period. Around 23 flights, including those operated by IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa Air, and Star Air, scheduled between 7 pm and 9 pm, were delayed, according to officials. The delays were mainly attributed to temporary ground handling constraints, including passenger movement, baggage processing, and gate allocation, as emergency protocols were implemented in the affected terminal area. Airport officials also confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported. Emergency protocols ensured that passengers were kept away from affected areas, and no evacuation of the entire terminal was required. Key systems in the affected zone, including electrical supply and certain communication infrastructure, were temporarily shut down as a precaution and restored after safety clearance.

Guadalajara, Mexico: Guadalajara International Airport experienced significant disruption on Sunday, February 22, 2026, as widespread violence erupted across the state of Jalisco following the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Mexican Army officials confirmed that 59-year-old Oseguera Cervantes , one of the country’s most wanted drug lords with a $15 million US bounty on his head, also had a long history of violent crime and trafficking, was killed during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco on Sunday morning. Four cartel members were killed at the scene, while another three died while being flown to Mexico City, among them El Mencho. Two alleged cartel members were arrested with weapons that included rocket launchers capable of bringing down aircraft and destroying armoured vehicles. The raid involved federal forces with intelligence support and resulted in multiple deaths among cartel members. The announcement of his death immediately sparked waves of retaliatory violence by cartel gunmen across Jalisco and neighboring states, including roadblocks with burning vehicles, clashes with security forces, and sporadic gunfire in urban peripheries. Videos circulated widely on social media on Sunday showing passengers at Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) running, taking cover, or expressing alarm at the sounds of distant gunfire. Some reports described fears of an “active shooter” near the terminals. However, airport operator Pacific Airport Group (GAP) issued an official statement clarifying that no gunfire or violent incident occurred inside the airport terminals themselves. According to GAP, the airport was operating normally and there were no confirmed security breaches within its controlled facilities. The National Guard and federal security forces were deployed to the airport precincts as a precaution to ensure safety amid the regional unrest. Despite the airport’s assertion that operations were secure, numerous airlines proactively canceled flights to and from Guadalajara and other Mexican destinations due to broader security concerns and travel disruptions: United Airlines confirmed cancellation of all Sunday flights to Guadalajara (GDL) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR). Southwest Airlines canceled flights arriving at and departing from Puerto Vallarta. American Airlines reportedly canceled remaining Sunday service to Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Mazatlán. Other international carriers, including Air Canada, Delta Airlines and Alaska Airlines temporarily suspended operations to affected Mexican airports. Some U.S. airlines also offered travel waivers and advised passengers to monitor flight status due to the evolving situation. Industry tracking data indicated that nearly half of all flights to or from Guadalajara that afternoon and evening were either canceled or delayed as carriers revised schedules in response to regional unrest and blocked access routes caused by cartel actions. The airlines acted out of “safety first” caution as access to GDL and other transport nodes became unpredictable due to cartel-initiated blockades.

The ceremony was led by Prince Faisal bin Nawaf, Emir of Al‑Jouf, alongside Transport Minister Saleh bin Nasser Al‑Jasser, GACA President Abdulaziz Al‑Duailej, and other senior officials. The inauguration signals a significant step forward in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambitions to modernize transport infrastructure and promote regional economic development. The new facility expands passenger capacity from 175,000 to 1.6 million annually, addressing growing demand for both domestic and international travel in the northern region. The airport’s 24,000-square-meter terminal is equipped with advanced passenger processing facilities, including two boarding bridges, seven departure gates, four arrival gates, 16 check-in counters, and modern automated passport control systems. Additional amenities include seven smart gates, a 470-meter baggage conveyor system, commercial and retail zones totaling 1,700 sqm, children’s play areas, and parking for 648 vehicles. At launch, the airport is served by three domestic Saudi airlines and four international carriers, connecting Al‑Jouf to destinations such as Riyadh, Jeddah, Sharjah, Dubai, Cairo, and Assiut. Domestic operations constitute the majority of flights, with Riyadh emerging as the busiest route, offering 38 weekly flights. On January 4, radio communications across the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) collapsed in a “blackout” that forced authorities to clear the airspace, ground departures and divert incoming flights for several hours. The incident left thousands of passengers stranded and triggered delays that rippled through European air traffic networks. According to the official report submitted to Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas, the root cause was desynchronisation and “digital noise” in legacy telecommunications hardware supporting the Greek Civil Aviation Authority’s (HCAA) voice communication system. The systems rely on Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) technology no longer supported by manufacturers, leaving them vulnerable to failures without modern operational guarantees. The expert panel, which included representatives from the HCAA, national cybersecurity authority, telecom regulator and EUROCONTROL, confirmed there were no indications of a cyberattack or external interference. Full restoration occurred after telecommunications circuits were resynchronised and rerouted, with services returning to normal by approximately 16:53 local time. Delhi, India: Air traffic in and out of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is facing significant disruption this week as temporary airspace closures come into force ahead of the 77th Republic Day celebrations. Authorities have issued formal restrictions that are expected to affect hundreds of scheduled flights between January 21 and January 26. Under Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and associated civil aviation agencies, the airspace over Delhi will be closed to commercial departures and arrivals daily between 10:20 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. (IST) for a duration of 2 hours 25 minutes. The restrictions are designed to facilitate military flypast rehearsals, parade drills and associated aerial security procedures ahead of the Republic Day parade. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, more than 600 flights are likely to be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled over the six-day period due to the closure coinciding with one of IGIA’s busiest scheduling windows. Airlines have warned of unpredictable movement patterns throughout the affected window, with adjustments to flight departures and arrivals increasingly likely during the restricted hours. On the Delhi–Pantnagar route, early-morning services were cancelled due to the imposed no-fly zone, with airlines offering rebooking or refunds to affected passengers. Similarly, two Air India flights operating between Nagpur and Delhi have been cancelled through January 26 as operators adjust schedules in light of the closure. The closures coincide with peak winter weather conditions in the national capital region. Dense fog and poor visibility have already contributed to flight delays and cancellations at IGIA and other airports in northern India in recent days. A travel advisory issued on January 17 by Delhi Airport officials highlighted that persistent fog coupled with heightened Republic Day security measures could create compounded challenges for passengers and airlines. The airspace restrictions form part of an integrated national security plan for Republic Day, which also includes extensive no-fly zones and road traffic curbs in central Delhi on rehearsal and parade days.
