Calgary, Canada: WestJet flight attendants launched a nationwide strike on Sunday after negotiations between Canada's second-largest airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) failed to produce a new collective agreement, triggering widespread flight cancellations during one of the country's busiest summer travel weekends. The strike involves approximately 4,400 cabin crew members represented by CUPE and follows months of contract negotiations centered on wages, compensation for duties performed on the ground, scheduling, and broader quality-of-life improvements. The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2025. WestJet said the work stoppage forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and significantly disrupted operations across its network. According to the airline, approximately 250,000 passengers have been affected by the disruption. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that more than 600 flights had been cancelled by Sunday morning, while FlightAware also recorded hundreds of cancellations across the carrier's network. The industrial action began after the union issued a 72-hour strike notice on July 30. WestJet responded with a lockout notice while both sides continued negotiations until shortly before the deadline. Despite last-minute bargaining efforts, no agreement was reached. At the center of the dispute is compensation for work performed before takeoff and after landing. CUPE argues that flight attendants should be paid from the time they report for duty until they complete their shifts, rather than primarily for time when the aircraft is in motion. The union maintains that pre-flight safety checks, boarding, passenger assistance, deplaning and other ground responsibilities deserve dedicated compensation. WestJet disputes the claim that this work is unpaid, stating that its existing "credit hour" compensation model already accounts for flight time, delays and various ground duties through a blended pay system rather than a conventional hourly wage. Following the start of the strike, WestJet publicly released details of what it described as its final contract proposal. The airline said the offer included a 13% wage increase effective October 2026, annual wage increases of 2.5% through 2029, retroactive pay to January 1, 2026, and additional compensation for all hours worked before and after flights, which it said represented an increase equivalent to approximately 12% of salary. The proposal also included higher meal allowances, expanded vacation benefits, annual health-care spending accounts, improved maternity leave provisions, scheduling enhancements, reduced maximum duty periods, additional rest time, and compensation for certain operational disruptions such as reassigned duties and hotel delays. WestJet Group Chief Executive Officer Alexis von Hoensbroech said the airline remained committed to reaching a negotiated settlement, describing the proposal as an industry-leading package that addressed the union's stated priorities while supporting the airline's long-term sustainability. He said the company believed an agreement remained achievable despite the strike. CUPE's WestJet Component President Alia Hussain said the union continued to seek a fair contract that properly recognizes the value of cabin crew work. She stated that members were prepared to return to the bargaining table and emphasized that compensation for unpaid ground duties remains a significant issue alongside broader contractual improvements. The dispute mirrors a wider movement among North American flight attendants seeking compensation for time spent working before aircraft doors close and after flights arrive at the gate. Similar disputes have recently taken place at Air Canada, where cabin crew secured boarding pay earlier this year following industrial action. In recent years, Delta Air Lines became the first major North American carrier to introduce dedicated boarding pay, with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines later implementing similar compensation models. WestJet currently operates under a credit-hour pay system, with compensation varying according to seniority. According to the airline, the structure combines flight hours and several non-flying duties into a single rate of pay rather than paying separately for each duty performed during a shift. The strike comes during a peak summer travel period and a three-day holiday weekend in Canada, increasing its impact on passengers and businesses. WestJet normally operates more than 600 flights daily and transports tens of thousands of passengers across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe. The airline holds roughly 30% of Canada's domestic aviation market. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce described the work stoppage as a significant disruption for travellers and businesses, warning that prolonged industrial action could affect tourism, supply chains and economic activity during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Canada's federal government acknowledged the disruption, with Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu expressing disappointment that negotiations failed to reach a settlement while reiterating that durable agreements are generally achieved through collective bargaining. As of publication, the government had not announced any formal intervention in the dispute. WestJet said affected passengers would be eligible for refunds or rebooking options where applicable and advised customers to monitor their flight status before travelling. Meanwhile, both the airline and CUPE indicated they remain willing to resume negotiations in an effort to reach a new collective agreement.

London, United Kingdom: Europe's largest low-cost carrier, Ryanair, has changed its long-standing family seating policy, allowing parents travelling with young children to sit together without paying a mandatory seat reservation fee. The move follows an investigation launched earlier this month by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into whether the airline's previous practice breached consumer protection laws. The revised policy took effect on Thursday, June 25, 2026, the same day Ryanair publicly announced the changes. While the airline maintains that its previous policy complied with all applicable laws and regulations, it said it would "reluctantly" adopt what it described as the industry standard rather than continue arguing with regulators. Under the updated policy, families who choose not to purchase reserved seats will receive complimentary seat allocations after completing online check-in. Ryanair said these free seats will generally be located toward the rear of the aircraft, where more seats are available. Passengers who prefer specific seats, including those closer to the front of the cabin, can still pay the usual seat reservation fee. The airline said the change would be revenue neutral, adding that it does not expect any financial impact from the revised seating arrangement. Before the change, Ryanair required at least one accompanying adult travelling with children aged 2 to 11 years to purchase what it called a "mandatory family seat." That adult paid a discounted reserved seat fee typically around £8 (US$10.70) per flight sector, according to the CMA while up to four children on the same booking could reserve adjacent seats free of charge. Ryanair argued that the policy ensured families knew their seating arrangements at the time of booking while maintaining the airline's low-fare model. The carrier also emphasized that it never charged children to sit beside their accompanying adult, only the adult reservation. The policy change came just two weeks after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced, on June 11, that it was investigating whether Ryanair's mandatory family seating fee amounted to an unfair contract term under UK consumer law. The regulator questioned whether parents were effectively being charged for the airline to meet its own obligations under aviation safety and disability rules, since Ryanair's own conditions required at least one parent to sit with children between the ages of two and eleven. The CMA also noted that additional fees could significantly increase the cost of holidays for families already budgeting carefully for travel. Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary was openly critical of the regulatory pressure that led to the change. In the company's announcement, he said,"We will reluctantly adjust to this industry standard as we don't want to waste time explaining to misguided regulators how badly they misunderstand what is in the best interest of UK and Europe's consumers." O'Leary defended Ryanair's previous model, arguing it had been "the most progressive and transparent in Europe." He also accused regulators of focusing on Ryanair while overlooking broader issues affecting consumers, including higher fares charged by airlines operating without low-cost competition, airport monopoly charges, and inefficiencies in European air traffic management. According to O'Leary, the revised policy would not increase consumer welfare but merely align Ryanair with competitors' seating practices. Although the CMA welcomed the airline's decision, it stressed that the investigation has not concluded. A CMA spokesperson said the regulator would examine whether Ryanair's updated policy fully complies with consumer law. The authority added that while the revised policy appears to benefit families by removing mandatory seating charges, it does not change the fact that passengers had previously been required to pay for so-called mandatory family seats. The watchdog confirmed that Ryanair chose to amend its policy voluntarily and that the ongoing investigation will continue assessing the legality of the airline's previous practices.

Almaty, Kazakhstan: A SWISS International Air Lines Airbus A350 operating flight LX123 from Seoul Incheon to Zurich made an emergency diversion to Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 6 after the co-pilot suffered a medical emergency while the aircraft was cruising over Kazakhstan. According to the airline’s official statement, the incident occurred approximately six hours into the long-haul flight when the co-pilot became unwell during the journey. The Airbus A350-941, registered HB-IFB, was carrying 227 passengers and 14 crew members at the time. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft squawking transponder code 7700, the international emergency signal used to indicate a general emergency before diverting south toward Almaty International Airport. The aircraft landed safely shortly before 1 p.m. local time on May 6. SWISS confirmed that three doctors travelling onboard assisted the crew by providing immediate medical aid to the co-pilot during the diversion. Based on their recommendation, the operating crew decided to divert to Almaty to ensure the pilot received urgent medical attention as quickly as possible. Emergency medical teams were waiting when the aircraft arrived in Almaty. The co-pilot was subsequently transported to a local hospital accompanied by another crew member. Airport authorities reported that the pilot was taken to Almaty City Hospital No. 4 for further examination and treatment. Local reports also referenced a suspected acute abdominal condition, though SWISS has not officially confirmed the nature of the medical issue. Following the unscheduled landing, passengers and crew were accommodated overnight in hotels in Almaty while the airline arranged for an additional pilot to be flown in. SWISS stated that the flight could not continue immediately because aviation regulations require a specifically qualified first officer to occupy the co-pilot’s right-hand seat. The airline also noted that crew duty-time limitations would have been exceeded if the flight had continued without additional crew support. In its statement, the airline said the “health and wellbeing” of its colleague remained the top priority while acknowledging the disruption caused to passengers’ travel plans. The carrier added that teams were working to support affected travellers and coordinate the continuation of the journey to Zurich.

Faro, Portugal: A Jet2 Boeing 737-800 operating flight LS3643 from Bournemouth, United Kingdom, to Gran Canaria, Spain, made an emergency landing at Faro Airport in Portugal on April 16, 2026, after crew reported smoke inside the cabin during the flight. The aircraft, carrying 141 passengers, departed Bournemouth at approximately 09:54 BST on a routine service to the Canary Islands. While cruising at altitude, the flight crew detected smoke or fumes in the cabin, prompting them to declare a technical emergency and initiate an immediate diversion to Faro, the nearest suitable airport along the route. According to Portuguese civil protection authorities and airport officials, the pilots issued an emergency call shortly before landing. The aircraft touched down safely at Faro at approximately 12:24 local time, around two and a half hours after departure, with no injuries reported among passengers or crew. Faro Airport activated its emergency response protocols in advance of the landing. The operation triggered the airport’s preliminary intervention plan, leading to the deployment of around 95 personnel and 41 emergency vehicles, including firefighters, police units, and medical teams. Emergency crews were positioned strategically along the runway to ensure rapid response if required. Passengers disembarked normally after landing while the aircraft was taken for technical inspection to determine the source of the smoke. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the incident. Some reports described the situation onboard as tense, with cabin smoke prompting a full emergency alert at the airport. A “red code” response was activated, mobilizing dozens of emergency vehicles and personnel as a precautionary measure, though the landing itself was conducted safely without further escalation. The aircraft remains under technical evaluation in Faro as investigations continue into the source of the smoke. The airline has not reported any injuries, and further updates are expected following inspection results.

Melbourne, Australia: A China Airlines Airbus A350-900 has been grounded in Melbourne following a rare ground-handling incident that resulted in significant structural damage to the aircraft’s forward passenger door during post-arrival operations. The aircraft, registered B-18902 and operating flight CI57 from Taipei, had completed its journey and arrived in Melbourne on April 14 when the incident occurred at the gate. The aircraft unexpectedly rolled backward while still connected to the jet bridge, causing the forward left (L1) door to be partially torn from its hinges and inflicting substantial damage to the aerobridge. All passengers and crew had already disembarked at the time, and no injuries were reported. Initial findings indicate that the aircraft’s unintended movement while docked led to stress on the door assembly and surrounding fuselage structure. The force of the movement caused the jet bridge to remain fixed while the aircraft shifted, resulting in the door being pulled out of alignment and damaged at the hinge points. Such damage is considered serious, as passenger doors form part of the aircraft’s pressurized structure and require extensive inspection and certified repairs before returning to service. Australia’s aviation safety authority has launched an investigation into the occurrence, focusing on ground-handling procedures, equipment usage, and potential human factors that may have contributed to the aircraft’s movement. The cause of the accident is yet to be confirmed, although initial reports suggest that the chocks had not been placed correctly in front of and behind the tires of the massive widebody aircraft. It’s believed the aircraft started to roll back with the forward left-hand door still open, causing the door to come into contact with the jetbridge and badly damaging it. The affected aircraft remains out of service in Melbourne pending repairs and safety clearance. The temporary loss of the widebody jet is expected to have a limited but notable impact on China Airlines’ long-haul scheduling, particularly on routes connecting Asia with Australia and beyond. The Airbus A350-900 forms a key part of the airline’s long-haul fleet, supporting premium international routes across Europe, North America, and Oceania.

London, United Kingdom: Thousands of passengers across Europe faced significant travel disruptions during the peak holiday travel period as nearly 1,000 flights were delayed and 20 cancelled at major airports, including hubs in France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, Norway, Italy, and Germany. Airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France, easyJet, KLM, and Turkish Airlines reported delays affecting both domestic and international services, disrupting schedules during the peak holiday travel period. Authorities and airline operators cited a combination of adverse winter weather, increased holiday traffic, and air traffic control constraints as key factors behind the widespread disruption. Meteorological services reported snow, fog, and high winds across northern and western Europe, which forced delays and limited airport capacity. The most affected airports included: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG): 226 delayed flights, 6 cancellations London Heathrow (LHR): 96 delayed flights, 8 cancellations Istanbul Airport (IST): 200 delays, 3 cancellations Madrid Barajas (MAD): 99 delayed flights, no cancellations Rome Fiumicino (FCO): 84 delays, 2 cancellations Additional disruptions were reported in Munich, Oslo, Barcelona, and Manchester, where delays caused knock-on effects on connecting flights and ground transport. While outright flight cancellations remained comparatively low, delays affected airline rotations, crew schedules, and passenger connections. Affected travelers faced missed connections, long waiting times, and last-minute rebooking. A spokesperson for one major carrier noted: “We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers. Operations are being prioritized based on safety, and rebooking assistance is being provided at affected airports.” In addition to adverse winter weather and heavy passenger traffic, strike action by airport ground staff and airline cabin crews further exacerbated delays. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) cabin crew walkouts at hubs like Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo, along with ground handling strikes in Spain and Portugal, contributed to longer check-in times, baggage delays, and operational bottlenecks. These industrial actions, combined with congested airspace and winter storms, created widespread disruption for passengers during one of Europe’s busiest travel periods. Europe’s aviation network has seen recurring disruptions throughout 2025, particularly during winter. Earlier reports indicated that nearly 4,000 flights were delayed and over 200 cancelled during December due to similar weather and traffic pressures. Analysts note that increased passenger demand post-pandemic and constrained air traffic control resources have created systemic vulnerabilities in the European flight network. Passengers affected by delays or cancellations in Europe may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004, except in cases caused by severe weather or air traffic control restrictions. Travelers are advised to check flight status regularly via airline apps or airport information screens, arrive at airports earlier than usual to accommodate potential delays, keep airline contact information handy for rebooking or compensation claims. Industry experts warn that air travel disruptions are likely to continue through the remainder of the holiday season, with weather volatility and high passenger volumes placing additional strain on airport operations and flight schedules. Travelers are advised to plan for potential delays and maintain flexibility in their travel plans.

London, United Kingdom: British Airways to introduce free, high-speed onboard WiFi across its entire fleet from 2026 after signing a major connectivity agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink, marking one of the most significant digital upgrades in the airline’s recent history. The initiative, part of BA’s £7-billion transformation programme, promises “lightning-fast, reliable WiFi that feels like home” for every passenger in every cabin, according to the airline’s official announcement. The rollout will extend to both short-haul and long-haul aircraft, enabling gate-to-gate connectivity without usage charges or tier-based plans. The move positions British Airways among the first major global carriers to adopt Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network at scale. These satellites offer significantly lower latency and stronger performance compared with conventional aviation WiFi systems, aiming to remove the long-standing frustration of slow or unreliable inflight internet. Media reports indicate that parts of the fleet may begin receiving installations as early as late 2025, with full deployment progressing through 2026. However, the airline has not disclosed the exact sequence of aircraft types or routes that will receive the system first. Parent company International Airlines Group (IAG) is also expected to expand Starlink connectivity across its other carriers, including Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, signalling a group-wide shift toward high-performance digital services. BA’s adoption of Starlink comes amid increasing competition in the European market, where carriers are upgrading cabins, lounges and digital platforms to meet evolving customer expectations. Analysts say free, fast internet could become a new industry standard, particularly on short-haul routes where in-flight connectivity has lagged behind long-haul offerings. While British Airways describes the service as completely free for passengers, it has not clarified whether any data caps, device limitations or route-specific restrictions will apply once the network enters full service.
