London, United Kingdom: The UK government has unveiled a new £219 million Low Carbon Fuels Fund (LCFF) aimed at accelerating domestic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, supporting economic growth, creating thousands of skilled jobs and strengthening the country's position as a global hub for low-carbon aviation fuels. Announced on June 16 by the Department for Transport, the funding programme will provide targeted support to companies developing low-carbon fuels, with £93 million set to be made available during the next two years. Applications are scheduled to open in mid-July 2026, with priority given to projects closest to commercial-scale production. The government said the initiative forms part of its wider strategy to decarbonise aviation while enabling continued sector growth. The new fund builds on £198 million already invested through the Advanced Fuels Fund (AFF) since 2022 to support cleaner aviation technologies. According to government estimates, domestic low-carbon fuel production could contribute up to £5 billion to the UK economy by 2050 while supporting approximately 15,000 jobs nationwide. Officials believe the investment will help attract private capital into new fuel production facilities and establish a stronger domestic SAF supply chain. Announcing the programme, Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister Keir Mather said: "This £219 million is the next chapter in Britain's green aviation revolution. We're backing brilliant British innovation, creating thousands of high-skilled jobs and making sure the UK leads the world in the fuels that will power the future of flight. "This kind of investment is exactly how we kickstart economic growth, open up exciting new opportunities for young people and make our holidays greener and cleaner." The government described sustainable aviation fuel as one of the aviation sector's most important decarbonisation technologies. SAF can be used as an alternative to conventional fossil-based jet fuel and is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 70% on a lifecycle basis. Officials said expanding domestic production will provide confidence for investors considering new SAF plants across the country while generating employment opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, science, construction and fuel production. The announcement also highlights the government's objective of ensuring that aviation growth remains compatible with the UK's net-zero commitments. SAF is expected to play a central role in enabling future aviation expansion while reducing the industry's environmental impact. Alongside the funding announcement, the Department for Transport launched a Call for Evidence on the UK's Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate. The mandate requires an increasing proportion of jet fuel supplied in the UK to come from sustainable sources, beginning at 2% in 2025, rising to 10% by 2030 and reaching 22% by 2040. The government said the consultation will examine global supply projections for different sustainable fuel pathways and assess their implications for achieving future SAF mandate targets. Officials stressed that overall SAF mandate targets are not being considered for reduction. Instead, the review is intended to help ensure the policy remains effective and responsive as the global sustainable fuel market develops. Industry representatives welcomed the latest funding package. British Sugar, which previously received support through the Advanced Fuels Fund, said the company is exploring the development of a demonstration SAF production facility through its British BioJet project at the Wissington site. In a statement, the company said, "We are very pleased to see the launch of the DfT's low carbon fuels fund and the clear commitment to further development of homegrown sustainable aviation fuel in the UK. At British Sugar, following a grant from the advanced fuels fund, the British BioJet project at our Wissington site is exploring the development of a sizable demonstration plant. "It will utilise our existing waste feedstocks with ethanol-to-jet technology to produce 1,500 tonnes of SAF supporting the growth in cleaner, greener jobs and investment. We welcome this next phase of funding to develop SAF, and look forward to making an application so that we can continue supporting the government's ambition for net-zero aviation." The new Low Carbon Fuels Fund is expected to launch later this summer, with government officials positioning the initiative as a key component of the UK's long-term aviation decarbonisation strategy and industrial growth agenda.

London, United Kingdom: UK-based private charter operator Zenith Aviation has entered administration after mounting financial difficulties forced the company to suspend operations, resulting in the loss of 41 jobs and the grounding of its fleet. The company, headquartered at London Biggin Hill Airport, officially entered administration on May 15, 2026, with insolvency specialist Nexus Corporate Solutions appointed to oversee the process. Administrators cited cashflow problems, unpaid debts, and longstanding ownership and management complications as the primary reasons behind the collapse. According to administrator Paul Hargreaves, Zenith Aviation had become insolvent after struggling to recover payments from debtors while also facing operational instability linked to previous ownership transitions. The administrator confirmed that all ongoing operations had effectively ceased while the company’s assets and future options were being evaluated. The collapse immediately affected 41 employees, many of whom are now being assisted with statutory redundancy claims. Administrators stated they are exploring possible rescue packages, restructuring options, or a potential buyout of the company should a viable investor emerge. Although Zenith Aviation operated primarily within the business aviation and executive charter sector rather than scheduled commercial passenger services, the shutdown reportedly disrupted several booked charter operations and left clients seeking alternative operators. Social media reports and aviation community posts indicated that some passengers and charter customers were left stranded following the abrupt halt in flights. The United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) subsequently suspended Zenith Aviation’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC), effectively preventing the airline from conducting commercial flight operations. The suspension involved two aircraft listed under the operator’s certificate, including a 2004-built Bombardier Learjet 40 and a 2016-built Learjet 75. The acquisition included Zenith’s UK-issued AOC, managed aircraft fleet, and CAA-approved Part-145 maintenance facility. At the time, OPUL Jets described the acquisition as strategically important in the post-Brexit aviation environment. However, OPUL Jets relinquished control of Zenith Aviation in December 2025, after which British national Touseef Tariq was appointed director. Industry reports suggest the transition created additional operational and management complications that contributed to the company’s worsening financial position. Zenith Aviation had built a reputation within the UK business aviation market over more than a decade of operations, specialising in executive charter flights, aircraft management, maintenance services, and private jet operations using Learjet platforms. The collapse comes amid broader pressure across segments of the global aviation industry, particularly among smaller regional and boutique operators facing rising operating costs, fluctuating charter demand, financing challenges, and post-pandemic market instability. Administrators are currently assessing Zenith Aviation’s remaining assets while considering whether portions of the business can be rescued or sold to new investors, with its operating licence suspended and all charter operations halted.

London, United Kingdom: A rapidly escalating jet fuel crisis, triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, is forcing airlines worldwide to cut flights, ground aircraft and reassess summer schedules. Industry leaders warn that the situation could worsen significantly by late May if supply constraints persist. The crisis has tightened global jet fuel availability and driven prices sharply higher, placing immediate financial and operational pressure on carriers. Airlines have begun responding with capacity reductions and targeted cancellations, particularly on short-haul and less profitable routes. Germany’s Lufthansa has announced one of the most significant responses so far, cancelling approximately 20,000 short-haul flights through October 2026 in a bid to conserve fuel. The airline has also grounded aircraft and removed 27 regional jets from active schedules. Meanwhile, Dutch carrier KLM has cancelled more than 150 to 160 European flights equivalent to around 80 return services while also suspending services to Dubai until mid-June due to rising fuel costs. Several other airlines are reported to be making adjustments or preparing contingency measures, including Ryanair, easyJet, SAS, Aer Lingus, Edelweiss Air, AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, Bamboo Airways and Air Canada. Low-cost giants Ryanair and easyJet have not yet implemented large-scale cancellations but have warned that disruptions could begin from mid-May if fuel shortages intensify. Both carriers are currently maintaining normal operations, supported by hedged fuel reserves, though executives caution that prolonged instability could lead to network reductions, fare increases and schedule adjustments. A spokesperson for Airlines UK said: “Airlines continue to operate normally and are not experiencing issues with jet fuel supply but as you would expect we remain in close contact with the Department for Transport given the current external environment. “It is vital that the government take the right actions now to ensure the continuation of supply, as well as support the UK aviation industry, which has been impacted by record high jet fuel prices, and that includes providing additional flexibility.” The broader aviation industry is also seeking regulatory relief. Airlines across the United Kingdom have urged governments to temporarily suspend flight taxes and environmental levies, relax night flight restrictions and slot usage rules, and classify fuel-related disruptions as “extraordinary circumstances” to limit compensation liabilities. Willie Walsh, the director general of the global airlines body Iata, said: “Along with doing everything possible to secure alternative supply lines, it’s important that authorities have well-communicated and well-coordinated plans in place in case rationing becomes necessary, including for slot relief.” Supply concerns remain acute. Industry estimates suggest Europe may have as little as six weeks of jet fuel available if current disruptions continue. The region relies heavily on imports, sourcing roughly 30–40% of its jet fuel externally, with a significant portion originating from the Middle East. This dependency has amplified the impact of the ongoing geopolitical crisis. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that broader flight cancellations could begin by late May, potentially affecting peak summer travel across Europe. Airlines are already feeling the financial impact, with jet fuel prices rising sharply in line with crude oil benchmarks and significantly increasing operating costs. For passengers, the effects are beginning to surface. Airfares are rising, with some long-haul ticket prices increasing by more than $100 on average. Airlines are introducing fuel surcharges, reducing flight frequencies on select routes and warning of possible short-notice schedule changes. While most existing bookings remain secure for now, the risk of disruption is expected to grow if the crisis extends into June. Despite reassurances from some regulators that no immediate physical shortage exists, airlines continue to prepare for a volatile period ahead. Contingency measures, including fuel conservation strategies and potential rationing scenarios, are under discussion across the industry.

The figure represents a 2% year-on-year increase from 295 million passengers in 2024, confirming that the sector has not only recovered from the pandemic but has now surpassed previous historic peaks. Commenting on the record-breaking performance, Selina Chadha, Group Director for Consumers and Markets at the CAA, said, “It has never been more popular to fly, and 2025 was officially a record-breaking year. While the sector grows from strength to strength, we continue working with aviation partners to drive even higher safety standards and protect passengers when they fly.” The CAA noted that the milestone is significant, with total passenger volumes exceeding the combined populations of several major European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The latest data highlights a sustained long-term expansion of UK aviation, with passenger numbers having tripled since 1989. Demand is expected to remain strong, supported by consumer sentiment.
