The court ruling stems from compliance failures identified at two MPI-approved transitional facilities where Menzies handles imported air freight, containers and associated packaging. Transitional facilities are critical checkpoints where incoming goods are cleared of potential biological threats before entering the domestic supply chain. MPI’s investigation found that on follow-up inspections, six consignments of uncleared risk goods were not properly wrapped in plastic, leaving gaps through which unwanted pests could escape. Inspectors also reported that the primary inspection room did not meet required hygiene standards and was not fit for purpose. Additionally, no biosecurity response equipment was present, and records documenting cleaning and staff training were either incomplete or absent. MPI Regional Manager for Investigations North, Aleshea Allen, emphasised the seriousness of the breach, noting that such failures create “a potential biosecurity risk at our border.” Allen reiterated that all operators handling imported goods are expected to fully comply with mandatory requirements set out under the Biosecurity Act. In announcing the penalty, the High Court highlighted that Menzies had failed to comply with a formal compliance order previously issued by MPI marking the first occasion a pecuniary penalty has been sought under the Biosecurity Act. Although Menzies’ non-compliance was not judged to be deliberate, the court upheld the need for deterrence and accountability. In a statement to the NZ Herald, a spokesperson for Menzies Aviation acknowledged the court’s ruling, noting that deficiencies occurred during a period when staffing challenges persisted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company confirmed that corrective measures were implemented well before the court decision and that biosecurity training and processes have since been strengthened. MPI Biosecurity New Zealand Manager Paul Hallett stressed the high stakes of biosecurity compliance, pointing to the risk of invasive pests such as brown marmorated stink bug, ants or moth species all of which have the potential to damage New Zealand’s horticulture and wider economy if inadvertently introduced. Under the Biosecurity Act 1993, corporations can face fines of up to $200,000 for offences related to non-compliance with section 154 obligations, depending on the nature of the breach. The Act forms a central pillar of New Zealand’s border protection system, designed to prevent the introduction of organisms that could threaten indigenous species, agriculture and public health.

Around four hours into the planned 10-hour journey, the flight began holding over northern UK airspace near Scotland and released fuel over a remote area off the west coast, a standard aviation practice to safely reduce landing weight. Flight tracking services showed BA285 circling at multiple flight levels for more than an hour before crews initiated the return to Heathrow. During this period the aircraft also became one of the most-tracked flights globally on FlightRadar24, highlighting the unusual nature of the diversion. British Airways subsequently confirmed the aircraft touched back down at Heathrow later the same day without declaring an emergency. In a statement to media, the airline said the diversion was due to a technical issue with the aircraft’s communication system and stressed that all on board landed safely with no injuries reported. Passengers affected by the disruption are being assisted with rebooking and ground support. The airline has apologised to customers for the inconvenience and encouraged travellers to check flight status information via official channels. A few days ago on December 8, a British Airways Airbus A320 flight from Edinburgh to London declared a mid-air emergency and returned safely to Edinburgh Airport earlier this week, after pilots reported a landing gear malfunction shortly after departure. Flight BA1443, bound for Heathrow, issued the internationally recognised 7700 emergency squawk code minutes after takeoff when the aircraft’s landing gear failed to retract properly, prompting the crew to hold over Stirling while troubleshooting before returning and landing without incident. The unscheduled return led Edinburgh Airport to temporarily suspend incoming and outgoing flights, with several services diverted to nearby airports during the disruption. No injuries were reported, and British Airways apologised to affected passengers as operations resumed after the technical issue was resolved.

The airline’s winter schedule cut was initially set at 5% but was later doubled to 10% by the government on December 9, 2025. The approved winter schedule originally planned 15,014 weekly departures, translating to over 2,200 daily flights. A 5% reduction would have removed about 108 flights per day, while the latest 10% cut corresponds to roughly 216 fewer flights daily. Sources suggest that IndiGo may operate as few as 1,800–1,900 flights per day, indicating up to 500 daily cancellations. Flight disruptions were already evident in November 2025, when the airline operated 59,438 out of the scheduled 64,346 flights, resulting in 951 cancellations for the month. Aircraft availability has also been below the planned numbers: although winter estimations projected 403 aircraft, only 339 aircraft in October and 344 in November were operational. Industry analysts warn that these reductions may exacerbate travel disruptions during peak winter months, particularly on busy domestic routes, as IndiGo continues to adjust its operations to match aircraft availability and crew capacity. IndiGo continues to grapple with operational challenges this winter, as hundreds of flights are being cancelled across major airports nationwide. As of December 10, 2025, the highest number of cancellations was reported from Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, where 61 flights including 35 arrivals and 26 departures were cancelled. Goa International Airport also saw multiple flight cancellations affecting routes to and from Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi. In Ahmedabad, 10 IndiGo flights were called off. Data from the Ministry of Civil Aviation indicates that between December 1–8, 2025, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai) recorded 905 flight cancellations and 1,475 delays exceeding 30 minutes, impacting around 2,60,000 passengers. IndiGo also plans for a hiring drive of around 900 recruits to meet DGCA’s stricter night-flight and duty-time norms, with the regulator setting 10 February as the compliance deadline. The airline detailed its hiring ramp-up in a submission to the DGCA, according to documents reviewed by Mint, stating it plans to induct 158 pilots by February, while the remaining 742 will be hired gradually by December next year, underlining the scale of the staffing challenge. The government had intervened, ordering a 10% reduction in IndiGo’s winter flight schedule to stabilize operations. Despite management assurances that the situation had “stabilized,” cancellations persist at multiple airports, highlighting the ongoing operational strain. The underlying trigger for the disruption lies in the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms introduced by the DGCA, aimed at strengthening aviation safety by reducing fatigue-related risks for pilots. The second and most stringent phase of these rules came into force on November 1, 2025. Under the revised framework, pilots are mandated to receive 48 consecutive hours of weekly rest, face tighter limits on consecutive night duties, and are subject to caps on night landings and duty extensions. Ivanovo, Russia: A Russian military transport aircraft of the An-22 type crashed on Tuesday, 9 December during a test flight, killing all personnel onboard, according to official sources. The aircraft went down near the village of Ivankovo, in the central Ivanovo Region, northeast of Moscow. The crash occurred during what the Russian Ministry of Defence described as a “post-repair test flight”. The An-22, a heavy-lift turboprop transport aircraft in service with the Russian Armed Forces was reportedly undergoing maintenance before the flight. According to preliminary statements from emergency services and the ministry, there were seven people onboard at the time of the crash. Rescue crews and a commission from the Russian Aerospace Forces have been dispatched to the site. Investigators have already launched a probe, reportedly focused on possible violations of flight-preparation or maintenance protocols. Within hours of the accident, the Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that all 7 members onboard were killed. Witnesses and some media reports claim the An-22 “began to disintegrate mid-air,” with wreckage falling into or near the nearby waterbody, identified as the Uvod Reservoir. Officials earlier emphasised that the crash occurred in an “uninhabited area,” reducing the risk of casualties on the ground. The An-22 is a heavy-lift military transport aircraft developed in the 1960s and used by the Soviet Union, later by Russia, for moving large equipment, oversized cargo or personnel. Over the decades, many An-22s have been retired and as of 2025, the particular aircraft that crashed was reportedly among the last of its kind still in active service. Given its role and significance, the loss of this aircraft is not just a tragic accident but a blow to Russia’s heavy-lift transport capacity. Russia’s older military fleet, especially transport aircraft, has come under increasing strain, a situation exacerbated by increased operational demands. The An-22 crash is the latest in a series of accidents involving Russian military transport aircraft. In 2024, another transport aircraft the Ilyushin Il-76 crashed in the same Ivanovo Region, killing all 15 on board. Some analysts attribute this rise in accidents to a combination of factors: aging aircraft, maintenance challenges under international sanctions, and increased tempo of military flights.

In December 2022, during a severe winter storm, Southwest cancelled nearly 17,000 flights, leaving over 2 million passengers stranded across the United States. The airline’s crew-rescheduling and operations control systems collapsed under pressure. In December 2023, after a formal investigation, DOT imposed a record-breaking US$ 140 million civil penalty on the airline, the largest fine ever issued by the agency to a U.S. carrier for consumer-protection violations. The settlement included US$ 35 million payable to the U.S. Treasury, with the balance to be covered through credits and compensation to affected customers. Southwest had already made two payments of US$ 12 million each in early 2024 and early 2025. The remaining US$ 11 million was scheduled for payment by January 31, 2026. In its updated consent order, DOT cited “significantly improved on-time performance and completion factor” demonstrated by Southwest, attributing this turnaround to the airline’s substantial investments in modernizing its operations. According to DOT, these improvements justified crediting the remaining US$ 11 million rather than demanding payment. Southwest reportedly invested more than US$ 1 billion since the 2022 crisis to upgrade its internal systems, enhance crew scheduling and tracking capabilities, and overhaul its network operations. DOT said the waiver is in the “public interest,” arguing that incentivising airlines to improve reliability and resilience ultimately benefits consumers more than simply collecting a monetary penalty. The incident disrupted operations at Edinburgh Airport and triggered the temporary suspension of all flights. Flight BA1443, operating an Airbus A320 (registration G‑EUUI), took off from Edinburgh’s Runway 24 at approximately 11:13 GMT on Monday morning. According to tracking data and air‑traffic sources, the flight crew soon identified that the aircraft’s landing gear could not be fully retracted. They issued a “7700” squawk the general‑emergency code then held at altitude around 6,500 feet while troubleshooting. The aircraft circled near the Stirling area for roughly 30–40 minutes before returning to Edinburgh. It landed safely at around 12:20 GMT. Upon landing, the aircraft came to a stop on Edinburgh’s only operational runway and remained immobilised due to the landing‑gear problem. As a result, the airport suspended all arrivals and departures until the aircraft could be towed off and the runway inspected and cleared. During the shutdown, flights from other carriers including easyJet, Ryanair and Lufthansa were delayed or diverted, creating a ripple effect of disruption across the airport’s schedule. Passengers aboard BA1443 were safely evacuated, they were transported back to the terminal via coaches. In a statement, British Airways confirmed the flight’s safe return, “The aircraft returned to Edinburgh Airport safely after our pilots identified a technical issue after take‑off.” The airline added it is working to minimise disruption for affected customers. Edinburgh Airport said that safety remained its top priority. After the aircraft was towed off the runway and hydraulic fluid cleared, normal operations resumed. The airport thanked passengers for their patience and the response teams for their swift action.
