New Delhi, India: Akasa Air has backed the Centre's reported proposal to allow airport operators to own airlines, with Founder and Chief Executive Officer Vinay Dube expressing confidence that the government will introduce appropriate safeguards while framing the policy. At the same time, the airline is preparing for its next phase of expansion, with plans to explore an initial public offering (IPO) within the next two to five years as it continues to strengthen its financial position. Speaking in an interview with PTI, Dube said India requires greater competition in the aviation sector and that consumers would ultimately benefit from having more airline choices. His remarks come amid reports that the government is considering changes to existing norms that would permit airport operators to establish or own airlines. According to Dube, any framework allowing airport operators to own airlines would naturally involve regulatory and competitive considerations, particularly when a private entity controls both airport infrastructure and an airline. However, he expressed confidence that policymakers are fully aware of these issues and will incorporate the necessary safeguards while drafting the legislation. "I am very confident that the government will take into account the considerations involved when a private enterprise owns both an airport and an airline. Therefore, I am happy and supportive of this move," Dube told PTI. Emphasising the need for a more competitive aviation market, he said India can and should support multiple airlines to meet growing passenger demand. While acknowledging potential concerns surrounding ownership structures, he stressed that the larger objective should remain expanding consumer choice and encouraging healthy market competition. The comments come shortly after IndiGo Co-Founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia publicly warned that permitting airport operators to own airlines could create a "massive conflict of interest." A day later, the Adani Group, which currently operates eight airports across India, denied media reports suggesting it planned to enter the airline business. The policy discussion is unfolding as India continues to rank among the world's fastest-growing domestic aviation markets, with the government pursuing measures aimed at expanding connectivity, increasing airline capacity and encouraging new entrants. Akasa Air, which commenced commercial operations on August 7, 2022, will complete four years of operations this week. The airline currently operates a fleet of 40 Boeing 737 aircraft and has steadily expanded its domestic and international network since launch. The government's commitment to promoting competition was reiterated earlier this week when Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on August 3, said the Centre remains committed to creating a conducive environment that supports the growth of existing airlines while facilitating the entry of new operators. In a separate interview in the past, Dube also outlined Akasa Air's long-term financial roadmap, revealing that the carrier intends to evaluate an initial public offering within the next two to five years. He said the airline remains financially healthy, describing Akasa Air as cash-positive and noting that its financial performance is progressing in line with management expectations. While confirming IPO plans are under consideration, Dube stressed that the airline will continue to prioritise sustainable expansion rather than pursuing aggressive fleet or network growth simply to increase its size."We will not chase growth for the sake of growth," Dube said. Akasa Air strengthened its financial position last year by raising fresh capital from investors, including Premji Invest and Claypond Capital, with the funds earmarked primarily for network and operational expansion. The airline has also outlined ambitious fleet expansion plans. Earlier, Chief Financial Officer Ankur Goel said Akasa Air aims to induct enough aircraft to build a fleet of 226 airplanes by the end of 2032, while continuing to improve financial performance and increase capacity. Official aviation data showed Akasa Air held a 5.4% domestic market share during the latest reporting period cited in the PTI report, underscoring its steady growth since entering India's highly competitive airline sector. With supportive financial fundamentals, an expanding fleet, and a long-term IPO strategy, Akasa Air is positioning itself for sustained growth while advocating for policy reforms that it believes could further strengthen competition in India's rapidly evolving aviation industry.

The cancellation also affected the corresponding return service from Nagpur to Hyderabad. The airline has not released details regarding the specific technical issue involved in the cancellation, nor has it disclosed the number of passengers affected. The affected travelers were offered assistance and accommodated on alternate flight arrangements. In a separate incident an IndiGo aircraft en route from Bengaluru to Nagpur made a precautionary landing at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport after the flight crew reported a technical snag while the aircraft was airborne. The incident occurred on May 29 when an IndiGo flight operating from Bengaluru to Nagpur was forced to divert to Hyderabad after pilots detected a suspected technical malfunction during the flight. The aircraft, carrying 126 passengers, landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, where emergency services were placed on standby as a precaution. According to officials, the crew followed standard operating procedures and elected to divert the aircraft to Hyderabad after identifying the issue. All passengers and crew members remained safe, and no injuries were reported. While the exact nature of the technical problem has not been disclosed, local reports indicated that the fault was rectified the same day. However, the aircraft reportedly remained in Hyderabad for further inspection and operational checks. IndiGo had not issued a detailed public statement identifying the causes of technical fault. The incidents did not result in any injuries, and both were handled in accordance with established aviation safety procedures.

California, United States: Joby Aviation has announced a strategic partnership with Air Space Intelligence (ASI) to accelerate the integration of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into the United States National Airspace System (NAS), marking a critical shift from aircraft development to airspace readiness. The collaboration, revealed on April 7, 2026, focuses on deploying ASI’s AI-powered Flyways platform as a core coordination layer to manage high-density eVTOL traffic, an emerging challenge as the industry approaches commercialization. While much of the eVTOL race has historically centered on aircraft design such as range, noise, and efficiency the partnership highlights a growing industry concern: airspace congestion at scale. With Joby eVTOL nearing FAA type certification and preparing for early commercial operations under the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, the focus is now shifting toward managing potentially hundreds of simultaneous flights across major urban corridors such as New York, Miami, and Dallas. The companies aim to address this challenge before large-scale deployment begins. At the center of the collaboration is ASI’s Flyways AI, built on its PRESCIENCE platform, which creates a four-dimensional digital model of airspace by integrating real-time traffic data, weather inputs, and demand forecasts. This system enables air traffic controllers to anticipate congestion and optimize routing proactively rather than reacting after disruptions occur. Bernard Asare, President of Civil Aviation at Air Space Intelligence, emphasized the importance of this shift, stating, “Scaling advanced air mobility requires more than new aircraft… it requires a new operating system for the airspace.” He added that the platform provides predictive awareness to coordinate high-density operations “proactively, not reactively,” bringing these capabilities to eVTOL operations from the outset. Unlike earlier initiatives that focused primarily on drone traffic management systems, this partnership of eVTOL is designed to integrate directly with existing air traffic control (ATC) workflows rather than operate as a parallel system. Flyways AI will augment controller decision-making within the current NAS infrastructure, a move that could prove critical in gaining regulatory acceptance and operational scalability. The companies confirmed that joint demonstrations, including live operational exercises, are expected before the end of 2026, aligning with Joby’s planned commercial launch timeline. These trials are expected to validate how AI-driven coordination performs in real-world, high-density airspace environments. The partnership builds on ASI’s existing experience in conventional aviation, where its technology already supports major stakeholders, including airlines and U.S. defense operations. The company’s systems reportedly manage a significant portion of U.S. air traffic, strengthening its credibility in safety-critical environments. Meanwhile, Joby eVTOL continues to advance toward commercialization. The company recently completed piloted demonstration flights in California and has been selected to participate in multiple projects under the U.S. government’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, which enables early operations across several states.
