Bengaluru, India: India is targeting the introduction of electric air taxis by 2028, with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu saying testing of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is expected to accelerate from 2027. The latest development comes as Bengaluru-based Sarla Aviation has secured Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a key regulatory step toward type certification of its indigenous eVTOL aircraft. The approval was handed over to Sarla Aviation at the inauguration of its new Bengaluru headquarters on August 8, 2026. Naidu said India wants to see the aircraft operating by 2028. “By 2028, we want to see these machines fly in India. There is a huge requirement, not only in Bangalore, but Mumbai and Delhi,” he said. He added, “I expect that next year we'll be completely in the testing phase,” while reiterating, “By 2028, we plan to make this happen.” Sarla Aviation has also moved beyond the early prototype stage. On July 1, 2026, the company announced that its half-scale Sylla 1.0 eVTOL technology demonstrator had completed more than 500 tests and over 18 hours of flight testing during a six-month campaign. The 700-kg-class aircraft has a 7.5-metre wingspan and, according to Sarla, became the heaviest electric aircraft to take off in India. The programme tested the aircraft's electric propulsion, battery architecture, distributed propulsion, flight controls, airframe and landing gear as an integrated system. Sarla Aviation CTO and co-founder Rakesh Gaonkar said the Sylla programme had produced the data needed to guide the next stage of development. “Sylla has given us the data we set out to capture, and those learnings are already shaping our next-gen aircraft as we move towards transition and sustained wing-borne flight on our journey to our 6+1 air taxi Shunya,” he said. The next step is Sylla 2.0, which is intended to demonstrate controlled transition from hover to sustained wing-borne flight. That is an important stage before the company moves toward a certifiable passenger-carrying eVTOL. Sarla's planned production aircraft is the six-passenger-plus-pilot Shunya. The developments provide an important update to the electric-air-taxi plan outlined by ET Now. The publication reported that India had set a 2028 target for eVTOL aircraft, with Naidu saying testing would gather pace the following year. The report highlighted Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi as cities where demand for such aircraft could be particularly significant because of severe road congestion and lengthy airport-city journeys. An eVTOL is an electrically powered aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing. Unlike conventional fixed-wing aircraft, it does not require a conventional runway and can potentially operate from smaller facilities closer to urban centres. The technology combines characteristics associated with helicopters, drones and conventional aircraft and is being developed under the broader advanced-air-mobility sector. Sarla Aviation's Shunya is designed around seven electric motors. Six motors provide vertical lift, while a seventh motor mounted at the rear provides forward propulsion. Sarla Aviation co-founder and CEO Adrian Schmidt explained the configuration to ANI: “It's powered by six electric motors that lift it up and one in the rear that pushes it forward. So we have a total of seven electric motors that we're using and it's piloted as of now with six passengers.” The company has said the aircraft's propulsion remains electrically driven. However, Schmidt explained that the design leaves room for a turbo-generator that could potentially recharge the batteries during flight. “We have enough space allocation so that we can consider putting in a turbo generator to charge our batteries mid-flight. But the energy transition from the battery to the motors is always going to be purely electric,” he said. Sarla first unveiled the Shunya prototype at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi in January 2025. The aircraft was presented as a six-passenger eVTOL with a maximum payload of about 680 kg and a targeted top speed of up to 250 km/h. The company said it was designed primarily for short urban journeys of roughly 20–30 km, while reported specifications indicated a potential range of up to 160 km with available battery technology. Sarla's roadmap has also included infrastructure and manufacturing. In November 2025, the company signed an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh government for a 500-acre aerospace campus in Anantapur, with an initial investment of ₹1,300 crore. Sarla described the project as an integrated Urban Air Mobility facility for eVTOL manufacturing and related activities. The company has said the facility is intended to support future aircraft production and air-taxi operations. The company's airport strategy also began taking shape earlier. Sarla Aviation and Bengaluru International Airport Limited signed a partnership agreement in January 2024 to explore an eVTOL ecosystem at Bengaluru airport, including connectivity between the airport and urban areas, vertiport infrastructure and an advanced traffic-management system for future eVTOL operations. Healthcare is another potential application. Bengaluru airport had an agreement with Sarla Aviation for last-mile connectivity and that Manipal Hospitals had also entered an agreement with the company for potential air-ambulance operations. More recent industry reporting indicates that hospitals and air-ambulance operators are increasingly exploring eVTOL partnerships as India develops its advanced-air-mobility ecosystem. The possible uses therefore extend beyond passenger air taxis. The technology could support airport-to-city transfers, last-mile connectivity, air ambulance operations, medical evacuation and cargo transportation. For India, airport connectivity is expected to be one of the earliest practical applications because road journeys between major airports and city centres can take considerable time. Naidu has said an airport-to-city journey that currently takes as long as two hours could potentially be reduced to around 20–30 minutes using eVTOL aircraft. The initial model is therefore expected to focus on short-distance and airport-linked journeys rather than replacing conventional public transportation. The Indian eVTOL market is not limited to Sarla Aviation. Chennai-based The ePlane Company is developing its e200X electric aircraft, while Hyderabad-based BluJ Aerospace is working on eVTOL technology for cargo and other applications. India is therefore developing multiple domestic approaches to advanced air mobility rather than relying solely on one manufacturer. There is also an international dimension to India's air-taxi plans. In 2023, InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of IndiGo, announced a partnership with US-based Archer Aviation to explore an all-electric air-taxi service in India, with an original 2026 target. However, that timeline has not materialised as initially envisaged. In 2026, IndiGo Ventures separately invested about ₹10 crore in Sarla Aviation, giving the Indian startup additional strategic backing. Importantly, the IndiGo investment should not be presented as confirmation that IndiGo itself will operate Sarla's eVTOL air-taxi service. Recent reporting said Sarla Aviation clarified that IndiGo's investment did not mean the airline was directly involved in its eVTOL operating plans. The regulatory process remains one of the biggest hurdles. Before commercial passenger operations can begin, eVTOL aircraft must demonstrate compliance with safety and airworthiness requirements and obtain the necessary certification. The DGCA will have to address aircraft design, flight operations, pilot qualifications, infrastructure, vertiports and integration with existing air-traffic systems. Infrastructure is another challenge. Commercial operations will require suitable landing and take-off locations, charging or energy infrastructure, maintenance facilities and systems for managing eVTOL traffic around densely populated areas. Battery performance, aircraft range, weather, operating economics and air-traffic management will also influence whether the 2028 target can be achieved at scale. Sarla's progress in 2026 nevertheless represents a significant shift from the concept and prototype phase. With the Sylla demonstrator having completed an extensive flight-test campaign and the company now holding DGCA Design Organisation Approval, its Shunya programme has entered a more advanced development and certification phase. The government's 2028 target will now depend on the pace of testing, transition-flight development, type certification, infrastructure creation and operational approvals over the next two years.

The companies announced the agreement on August 10, 2026, saying the deal will combine capabilities developed over decades in autonomy, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The transaction will add a profitable defense business generating more than $200 million in annual revenue to Archer’s portfolio, with operations across 35 countries. Archer said the deal will combine Wisk, SkyGrid and Insitu’s autonomy and airspace-intelligence software with Archer’s purpose-built aerospace and defense AI foundation model, ZEE. Together, the businesses have nearly two million combined flight hours, providing Archer with what it described as a deep autonomy foundation for its AI platform. The companies said the combination is intended to position Archer across commercial aerospace, defense and air traffic management. Wisk, SkyGrid and Insitu have developed autonomous flight, airspace-management and uncrewed-aircraft technologies, which Archer said will complement its existing air-taxi, UAS and AI capabilities and help bring new solutions to the aviation market. “This is a watershed moment for Archer and the future of physical AI in aerospace and defense,” Archer Founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said. He described the agreement as “the next big step forward” for Archer as it seeks to become a diversified platform, rapidly expand its revenue base and bring greater scale to its business. Under a separate collaboration and technology-sharing arrangement, Boeing will retain access to Wisk’s core autonomous-flight technology for its current and next-generation commercial and defense aircraft. Boeing will also retain strategic upside through its stake in Archer while focusing its current and future investment on its core businesses. “This transaction is a win-win for Boeing and Archer,” said Brian Yutko, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Airplanes Product Development. He said the transaction will allow Wisk, SkyGrid and Insitu to accelerate capability development and time to market while allowing Boeing to capitalize on investments it has made in the technologies over the past two decades through continued development within its core businesses. Yutko added that, having worked with the teams at the three companies, he believes the transaction will create an industry leader in the advanced aviation market. Boeing, he said, looks forward to working with Archer to continue innovation in aerospace, defense and autonomy. Wisk brings autonomous eVTOL technology to the transaction. According to the release, Wisk is the only company to have designed, built and flown six generations of eVTOL aircraft, completing more than 1,700 flight tests. Over 16 years, its team has developed autonomy capabilities based around a next-generation flight-control computer, sensor suite and radar system designed for certification in civil and potential defense applications. SkyGrid contributes airspace-management technology. The company has developed a ground-based, aircraft-agnostic air-traffic-management solution intended to provide the digital foundation for automated airspace. Its system is designed to support safe integration, scalable automation and coordinated traffic management needed for broader commercialization across the aviation ecosystem. Insitu brings an established unmanned-aircraft business focused on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Its portfolio includes high-performance, cost-effective and resilient VTOL-capable UAS along with AI-enabled software. Archer said Insitu’s technologies have supported the armed forces of 35 nations in making faster and more informed decisions. Insitu operates offices in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. The company has manufactured and fielded more than 3,500 UAS and maintains operations and support networks across every hemisphere. The transaction is not yet complete. Archer said closing remains subject to agreed conditions, including the expiration or termination of the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. The companies expect the transaction to close by the end of 2026. Moelis & Company is advising Archer, with Fenwick & West serving as its outside counsel, while J.P. Morgan Securities is advising Boeing and Mayer Brown is serving as Boeing’s outside counsel. The release also makes clear that the transaction’s projected benefits and timing remain subject to regulatory approvals, closing conditions, potential transaction costs, integration risks, financial-performance uncertainty and other factors. Both companies cautioned that forward-looking statements are predictions and that actual results could differ materially from current expectations. Boeing described itself in the release as a global aerospace company and major U.S. exporter developing and servicing commercial aircraft, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries. Archer said it builds aircraft and core technologies intended to define the next era of flight for aerospace and defense. The agreement marks a major expansion of Archer beyond electric air taxis, bringing together eVTOL aircraft, autonomous flight, UAS, AI and automated-airspace technologies under one platform. The companies said the combination is intended to accelerate the development and commercialization of technologies spanning commercial aviation, defense and future automated airspace.

The latest flight builds on an urban air mobility programme first publicly presented in Alatau City in June and comes as the country moves to establish the regulatory and infrastructure framework needed for future commercial operations. The July 24 demonstration was conducted at the Kazanat Hippodrome by Kazakhstan-based Alatau Advance Air Group Ltd. (AAAG) in partnership with Chinese eVTOL manufacturer AutoFlight. The flight was held as part of the Games of the Future 2026, supported by Samruk-Kazyna, and marked the first demonstration flight of an eVTOL-based air taxi in Astana. The aircraft used for the demonstration was the AutoFlight Prosperity, designed to accommodate one pilot and up to five passengers. The aircraft is equipped with 13 electric motors and can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h, with a range of up to 200 km. It produces zero direct CO₂ emissions and operates more quietly than conventional aircraft. The demonstration was conducted without passengers in accordance with safety requirements and ahead of full passenger certification for operation in Kazakhstan. The Astana flight follows an earlier milestone in Alatau City. On June 9, Kazakhstan presented what it described as the first urban air mobility ecosystem in Central Asia, with the first demonstration flight of the AutoFlight Prosperity. The project is being developed through private investment by AAAG in partnership with technology companies from the United States, China, South Korea and Italy. Total investment in developing urban air mobility in the region is estimated at $300 million. The June presentation also outlined plans for a broader UAM ecosystem encompassing eVTOL air taxis, vertiports, digital navigation and unmanned cargo delivery. Keeta Drone of China and A2Z of the United States presented cargo delivery systems, while a digital UATM navigation platform was showcased with participation from Korea Airports Corporation and Shenzhen Urban Transportation Planning Center. Infrastructure development is already underway. Construction of the first vertiport in Alatau City has begun in cooperation with UrbanV. The planned air mobility network is expected to connect Alatau City with Almaty and key tourist destinations across Almaty Region. Preliminary estimates indicate that an air-taxi journey from Almaty Airport to the Medeu high-mountain complex could take between 10 and 12 minutes. The programme has also advanced on the regulatory front. Kazakhstan signed a Constitutional Law on the special legal regime for Alatau City on May 8, 2026, providing for experimental legal regimes and special airspace zones for Urban Air Mobility. The law entered into force on July 1, establishing Alatau City as a pilot platform for innovative transport technologies and allowing UAM infrastructure to be incorporated into the city's master plan from the early stages of development. Further legislative changes signed on June 24 established a legal framework for UAM in Kazakhstan, including the legal status of eVTOL aircraft, vertiports and Unmanned Traffic Management systems. The framework also introduces certification requirements for industry participants and digital infrastructure, providing the regulatory foundation for the future integration of the technology into the country's transport system. AAAG is working with government authorities on approximately 40 regulatory acts intended to support the development and regulation of the emerging sector. The company has also signed a memorandum with AutoFlight covering the planned supply of 50 aircraft from the V2000 and V5000 series. The agreement includes technology transfer, training for Kazakh specialists and plans for a regional maintenance and repair centre. The latest government update says the UAM Center Eurasia project is already being developed in Alatau City and is intended to become the first urban air mobility centre in the region. AAAG is working with Korea Airports Corporation, UrbanV and AutoFlight on a network of vertiports, digital infrastructure and preparations for commercial operations. The AutoFlight Prosperity demonstrated in Astana is scheduled to remain on public display during the Games of the Future 2026. It will be exhibited outside Barys Arena on July 29 and 30, giving visitors an opportunity to see the aircraft following its demonstration flight. Kazakhstan's progress therefore represents more than a single air-taxi demonstration. The country has moved from an initial public presentation in Alatau City on June 9 to a second demonstration in Astana on July 24, while simultaneously advancing legislation, infrastructure, aircraft procurement and technical capability. However, the programme remains in the development and demonstration phase, and a full commercial passenger air-taxi service has not yet been launched. The latest developments strengthen Kazakhstan's position as the first country in Central Asia to publicly demonstrate an eVTOL-based urban air mobility ecosystem and establish the foundations for its future integration into the transport network.

São Paulo, Brazil: On 10 November, 2025 Eve Air Mobility and Revo have announced the first real-world operational deployment of Eve’s Vector Urban Air Traffic Management (UATM) software during the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of urban air mobility infrastructure. The deployment will take place at Autódromo José Carlos Pace (Interlagos), where Revo will use Vector to manage high-volume helicopter operations during the Formula 1 race weekend. The software will support real-time coordination of aircraft movements, ground operations and vertiport activity in one of the most demanding urban aviation environments in Brazil. Vector’s Vertiport and Ground Operations module will be used for the live operation. The module enables scheduling, traffic optimization, aircraft sequencing and digital coordination between air and ground teams. According to Eve Air Mobility, this marks the first time the software will operate outside a test or simulated environment. Eve stated that the deployment represents a critical step in validating Vector’s readiness for large-scale commercial use. The company also confirmed that a Fleet Operations module, designed to support both helicopters and future eVTOL aircraft, is scheduled for release in 2026. The deployment builds on the long-term partnership between Eve and Revo. In June 2025, Revo signed a framework agreement with Eve covering up to 50 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, positioning São Paulo as one of the first cities expected to see large-scale commercial eVTOL services. Eve said real-world operations at a high-traffic international sporting event will provide critical data to refine Vector’s performance, scalability and safety features ahead of future urban eVTOL networks.

Tokyo, Japan: Honda has announced that its full-scale hybrid electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is scheduled to make its first flight in March 2026, marking a significant milestone in the company’s advanced air mobility (AAM) program. The prototype is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The aircraft features a hybrid-electric propulsion system, combining battery-powered electric motors with a compact internal-combustion turbogenerator. This configuration is designed to extend the aircraft’s range to approximately 400 kilometers, positioning it for potential suburban and intercity operations, beyond short urban “hop-on, hop-off” flights. Honda has conducted extensive subscale testing, with more than 400 successful flights of a roughly one-third-scale demonstrator. These tests validated flight control systems and vertical lift capabilities, paving the way for the full-scale prototype. “At this stage, the first full-scale prototype will demonstrate the aircraft’s fundamental flight capabilities,” Honda said, emphasizing that the integration of the hybrid turbogenerator may debut in a follow-up model. The company has also refined the aircraft’s design since an earlier concept was revealed. The fuselage now features a more uniform cross-section for improved aerodynamics and structural efficiency. The cabin, recognized with a Red Dot Design Concept Award, emphasizes passenger comfort, visibility, and noise reduction. Honda envisions the eVTOL as a versatile urban and regional mobility solution, particularly in areas where charging infrastructure is limited. The hybrid configuration provides operational flexibility, allowing continued flight even if battery levels drop. Challenges remain, including certification of the hybrid-electric configuration and development of infrastructure for takeoff, landing, and maintenance. Honda will work closely with aviation regulators to secure airworthiness approvals and define operational safety standards. Industry analysts note that Honda’s hybrid approach could broaden the applicability of eVTOLs beyond densely populated urban centers, potentially enabling regional air mobility in emerging markets. Honda’s March 2026 flight is expected to set the stage for further testing, regulatory engagement, and eventual commercial deployment, likely in the early 2030s.
