Arizona, United States: A Glasair Sportsman 2+2 carrying two people crashed in the remote Mazatzal Wilderness west of Payson in Gila County, Arizona, on Monday, August 10, 2026, killing both occupants, Brad Lawrence, 75, and Carter Buckner, 19, of Payson, as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigate what caused the accident. The crash site was located west of Polles Mesa in rugged wilderness terrain, with reports placing the accident at around 11 p.m. The aircraft was identified by the FAA as a Glasair Sportsman 2+2, a privately operated light aircraft. No airline or commercial operator has been identified in the reports, and authorities have not publicly confirmed the aircraft’s registration, departure point or intended destination. The NTSB said investigators were continuing to gather information, while the FAA confirmed that the agency was also investigating the crash. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a possible downed aircraft west of Polles Mesa in the Mazatzal Wilderness. The location’s remote and rugged terrain created significant challenges for the response. A helicopter from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office helped locate the wreckage, while a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office helicopter transported deputies to the crash site for the initial investigation. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office said the assistance was required because of the “remoteness and rugged terrain.” Gila County Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd thanked the neighboring agencies for their assistance following the crash. “Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd would like to thank the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Pinal County Sheriff's Office for their coordinated assistance,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, adding that the sheriff extended “our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy.” The victims were identified as Lawrence and Buckner, both Payson residents. Authorities have not established publicly who was flying the aircraft at the time of the crash. The circumstances leading up to the accident, including the aircraft’s flight path and what happened immediately before impact, remain under investigation. Lawrence was well known in the local aviation community. According to FOX 10, he served as vice president of the Payson Pilots Association for nearly three years and was described by fellow pilots as an experienced aviator with a strong passion for flying. “He was a very experienced aviator. He had two airplanes. His own hanger and house beside the hanger, so that gives you an indication of his passion for aviation,” Payson Pilots Association president Kevin McCully told FOX 10. Lawrence was also involved in aviation outreach. Kevin McCully, president of the Payson Pilots Association said Lawrence had participated in the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program, which provides young people with introductory flights to encourage interest in aviation. McCully said he did not believe the fatal flight was part of the Young Eagles program, but suggested Lawrence may have been demonstrating his aircraft and helping Buckner become involved in aviation. “He loved to travel. Loved his airplane of course. And he was just a wonderful man,” Debbie Snow, a member of Lawrence’s family, told FOX 10 while remembering the longtime pilot. McCully added, “We’re all going to miss him very much.” The crash investigation is now being led at the federal level by the NTSB, with the FAA assisting. As of the latest available reports, investigators had not released a probable cause, possible mechanical issue, weather factor or other explanation for the crash. The expanded testing follows the August 4 Phuket-Delhi incident, in which an Air India A320neo lost about 300 feet in altitude, leaving 24 passengers and crew injured. Both pilots underwent mandatory screening, with the captain’s initial test requiring confirmation. A later media report said the captain tested positive for marijuana in the confirmatory test, although this has not been officially confirmed by DGCA or the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu said the incident is being investigated with aviation safety as the priority. The expanded screening marks a stronger step by Air India to monitor pilot fitness, while the airline and regulator are expected to assess the findings and determine any further safety measures. New Delhi, India: Air India and Air India Express have begun mandatory substance screening for more than 5,000 pilots, with the airline launching the one-time, group-wide testing exercise on August 13. The programme covers pilots across both carriers and goes beyond the existing regulatory requirement for airlines to randomly test at least 10% of flight crew for psychoactive substances each year. Air India has not publicly disclosed how many pilots have completed the new screening or what percentage of the total pilot pool has been tested. Current reports describe the exercise as ongoing rather than completed. The testing covers substances and medications prohibited under aviation regulations and is being conducted at multiple points across the airline’s operations. According to an internal Air India communication cited by Reuters, pilots can be screened alongside training sessions at the airline’s Gurugram academy, after flights at briefing centres and offices, and at locations designated according to their home bases. Air India Express pilots are included in the exercise. The airline has said the additional screening is intended to strengthen safety standards and reassure passengers and other stakeholders. Air India announced the expanded testing programme on August 13, saying it already complies with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s existing requirements but had decided to go further. The airline’s senior vice-president for flight operations, Captain Manish Uppal, told pilots that protecting passenger trust was central to the decision. After this one-time exercise, Air India is expected to return to the applicable regulatory framework, which currently requires annual random testing of at least 10% of flight crew. The move follows the August 4 serious incident involving an Air India Airbus A320neo operating from Phuket to Delhi. The aircraft experienced a sudden loss of about 300 feet in altitude while cruising before stabilising and continuing to Delhi. The flight was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members, and subsequent reports said 24 passengers and crew members were injured. Following the incident, both pilots underwent mandatory screening for psychoactive substances after the aircraft landed in Delhi. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the captain’s initial result required further laboratory confirmation, and both pilots were removed from flying duties while the investigation continued. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is examining flight data, aircraft systems, maintenance and operational records, medical information and crew accounts, with Airbus and France’s BEA assisting the Indian investigation. The subsequent development that brought the pilot-testing issue into sharper focus was the reported result of the confirmatory laboratory test. Several media outlets reported on August 11, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the captain had tested positive for marijuana in the confirmatory test. Separately, the Ministry of Civil Aviation officially summoned Air India CEO Campbell Wilson for a briefing on the investigation. That result, however, has not been publicly confirmed in an official statement by the DGCA or the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The official position previously released by the ministry was that the captain’s initial screening required confirmatory testing. The reported positive confirmatory result therefore remains attributed to sources familiar with the matter rather than an officially published regulatory finding. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu has meanwhile maintained that the incident is being investigated and that aviation safety remains the priority. Beijing, China: Air China’s COMAC C919 completed its first scheduled international passenger service on August 12, 2026, when flight CA723 departed Beijing Capital International Airport at about 3 p.m. for Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, marking the first time the Chinese-developed narrowbody aircraft carried passengers on a regular route between China and another country. The aircraft arrived at Chinggis Khaan International Airport at about 4:58 p.m. with 121 passengers onboard. China operates the route daily, with CA723 scheduled to depart Beijing at 3 p.m. and arrive in Ulaanbaatar at 5:15 p.m., while return flight CA724 departs Ulaanbaatar at 6:30 p.m. and reaches Beijing at 8:35 p.m., with all times local. The Beijing-Ulaanbaatar operation marks the latest stage in the C919’s commercial development since the aircraft entered airline service in 2023. The C919 was developed by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the country’s state-owned commercial aircraft manufacturer, as China’s first domestically developed narrowbody mainline jet built to international airworthiness standards. COMAC lists the aircraft’s basic configuration at 158 to 192 seats, with a range of 4,075 to 5,555 kilometers. The programme reached a major milestone on November 2, 2015, when the first C919 completed final assembly and rolled out, followed by its maiden flight on May 5, 2017. The aircraft received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on September 29, 2022, and the first C919 was delivered to launch customer China Eastern Airlines on December 9, 2022. China Eastern subsequently operated the aircraft’s first commercial passenger flight on May 28, 2023, completing the development, manufacturing, certification and commercial-entry stages of the programme. The C919’s international exposure began before Wednesday’s scheduled service. In February 2024, a China Eastern C919 flew to Singapore for the Singapore Airshow, marking the aircraft’s first appearance at the event. COMAC then conducted a series of demonstration flights in Southeast Asia in 2024, including visits to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia, to assess the aircraft’s compatibility with local airports, ground-support equipment and operating procedures. The C919 programme has also expanded beyond the original aircraft configuration. On July 29, 2026, COMAC conducted the first flight of the C919 high-altitude variant at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The aircraft flew for 1 hour and 59 minutes and completed all planned test items. COMAC said the variant incorporates a shortened fuselage and system modifications designed for high-altitude operations. The aircraft remains heavily dependent on an international supply chain. Its LEAP-1C engines are supplied by CFM International, the GE Aerospace-Safran joint venture, while Honeywell, Collins Aerospace, Parker Hannifin, Moog and other Western companies supply systems and equipment. Air Data News reported that this dependence became particularly visible during the 2025 US-China trade dispute, when Washington temporarily suspended export licenses involving technology and engines destined for COMAC before the restrictions were later lifted. The C919’s dependence on foreign technology has also been a factor in China’s efforts to develop domestic alternatives. Replacing established Western systems requires more than manufacturing substitute components, because replacement systems must meet requirements for reliability, weight, fuel efficiency, durability and certification. Production has been another major part of the programme’s development. COMAC delivered 15 C919 aircraft to customers in 2025, well below an earlier target of 75 aircraft. South China Morning Post reported in January 2026 that COMAC was targeting at least 28 deliveries during 2026 and that, if production reached the expected pace, the manufacturer could produce one C919 every 10 to 15 days. The report said two aircraft had already taken shape during the first three weeks of 2026 and were undergoing delivery procedures. COMAC has also been expanding its production infrastructure. ChinaTravelNews reported in July 2026 that deliveries were expected to reach at least 28 C919 aircraft in 2026, with production potentially increasing to one aircraft every 10 to 15 days. The second phase of the C919 final-assembly-line expansion in Shanghai Pudong is expected to take annual production capacity above 100 aircraft, while COMAC has set a longer-term target of 200 aircraft a year by 2029. Earlier production plans were even more ambitious. In March 2025, COMAC raised its planned C919 production capacity for that year to 75 aircraft from an earlier target of 50, while setting a 200-aircraft annual production objective for 2029. The actual 2025 delivery figure subsequently came in at 15 aircraft. The C919’s order book has been concentrated largely among Chinese airlines. By December 2024, Air Data News reported that Air China, China Southern and China Eastern together had ordered 306 C919 aircraft, although only 14 had been delivered to the three carriers at that point. COMAC was simultaneously exploring potential overseas customers in Indonesia, Cambodia and Kazakhstan, while Vietnam Airlines, AirAsia and Brazil’s Total Linhas A

WestJet To Pay C$4.5 Million In Decade-Long Flight Attendants’ Harassment Case SEO DES: The case stemmed from alleged sexual assaults involving a WestJet pilot in 2008 and 2010 followed by claims of inadequate investigations & harassment reporting SOCIAL: The Supreme Court of British Columbia approved WestJet’s C$4.5 million settlement on August 10, 2026, ending a decade-long sexual-harassment class action involving 3,452 current and former female flight attendants. The settlement was found fair, reasonable and in the class members’ best interests. The settlement follows allegations that WestJet failed to maintain an effective workplace free from harassment. It includes an independent assessment of workplace harassment, underreporting and the effectiveness of WestJet’s reporting and response systems, although the airline denies wrongdoing and admits no liability. Eligible claimants are expected to receive about C$470 each, subject to final administration costs. Deloitte LLP will administer the claims process once it opens, while the settlement remains subject to a mandatory 30-day finalization period following the August 10 approval. Vancouver, Canada: WestJet’s C$4.5 million settlement with female flight attendants in a decade-long sexual harassment class action was approved by the Supreme Court of British Columbia on August 10, 2026, bringing the long-running case closer to an end while requiring the airline to commission an independent workplace assessment into harassment, underreporting and the effectiveness of its reporting systems. The settlement covers current and former female WestJet mainline flight attendants who worked between April 4, 2014, and February 28, 2021, and who did not opt out of the class action. The court found the settlement fair, reasonable and in the best interests of the class. Under the approved agreement, the C$4.5 million settlement fund will first cover court-approved legal fees, disbursements, applicable taxes, settlement administration expenses and an honorarium for representative plaintiff Mandalena Lewis. The remaining amount will be distributed among eligible class members who submit valid claims. The class-action lawyers currently estimate that each eligible claimant who files a valid claim will receive about C$470, although the final amount could change slightly after administration costs are finalized. The settlement does not include an admission of liability or wrongdoing by WestJet. The airline continues to deny the allegations, and the disputed claims were never determined at trial. WestJet has also not agreed to some of the major forms of relief originally sought by the lawsuit, including mandatory anti-harassment training for pilots, an admission of wrongdoing or an admission that it breached its employment contracts. Instead, one of the key non-monetary terms requires WestJet to retain an independent and qualified third party to assess the prevalence of workplace harassment, the extent to which harassment is underreported, and how the airline’s systems for reporting and responding to harassment can be made more effective. WestJet must provide employees with a summary of the assessment’s findings. Deloitte LLP has been appointed as the independent claims administrator and is preparing a secure online claims portal. Eligible class members do not need to submit anything yet. Once the portal is ready, they will receive notice containing the claims link, instructions, the deadline and payment information. Class members will have three months from the date that notice is sent to submit a valid claim. Deloitte is then expected to review and process the claims within up to 60 days after the claims deadline, with approved payments to be made through Interac e-Transfer. The settlement is not yet final. A mandatory 30-day period follows the court’s August 10 approval before the agreement becomes final. Lewis, a former WestJet flight attendant, launched the class action in April 2016 after alleging that the airline had failed to uphold its promise to provide female employees with a workplace free from harassment. The case grew out of allegations surrounding an incident involving Lewis and a WestJet pilot during a layover in Maui, Hawaii, in January 2010, when Lewis was 25. According to court-related accounts, Lewis alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the pilot and that another female flight attendant had also been assaulted by the same pilot in 2008. Lewis alleged that she reported the 2010 incident to WestJet and that the airline’s subsequent investigation was inadequate. She said she received limited information about how the investigation was being conducted and was warned that she could face discipline if she discussed the incident with others. WestJet managers later told her that the pilot had not been terminated following the investigation, although restrictions were placed on his ability to fly to certain destinations and Lewis was not supposed to be scheduled to work with him. Lewis later learned in August 2015 that another female flight attendant had allegedly reported an assault involving the same pilot in 2008. Passenger Patrick Gotwalt captured footage of the event, while witnesses on the ground also reported hearing several loud popping sounds and seeing orange flashes from the aircraft’s left side. Lindsey Mackey, who was on the ground near the beach, told CNN that she heard loud popping noises before noticing orange flashes coming from the aircraft’s left wing. The visual evidence showed what appeared to be flames or sparks coming from the area around the left engine as the aircraft continued flying back toward the airport. As the Boeing 737-800 returned, airport emergency personnel prepared for its arrival. Workers subsequently found substantial bird remains and debris on the runway. Radio communications from the airport included the statement, “We’ve got a lot of bird debris out here. We’re going to grab as many big pieces as we can.” The debris provided physical evidence consistent with reports that the aircraft had struck birds. Flight 1760 landed safely back at Myrtle Beach at approximately 8:40 a.m., after spending roughly 15 minutes in the air, according to reports. The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power, allowing passengers to disembark normally. No injuries were reported. The flight was carrying 172 passengers/customers and nine crew members, according to the New York Post, although the airline's statement cited by The U.S. Sun referred specifically to the 172 customers aboard. American Airlines said the aircraft was removed from service for a maintenance inspection following the incident. In a statement, the airline said, “The aircraft landed safely and has been taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team.” The airline added, “Our team worked to get customers on their way to Charlotte (CLT) on a replacement aircraft.” American also thanked its employees for their professionalism and passengers for their understanding. The aircraft was therefore not continued to Charlotte after the emergency landing. American arranged a replacement aircraft so the affected passengers could continue their journey to Charlotte. Although video footage showed flames coming from the left engine area, the New York Post reported that there was no internal engine fire, indicating that the visible flames did not necessarily represent a sustained fire inside the engine. The aircraft was nevertheless removed from service for inspection. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the aircraft landed at Myrtle Beach at about 8:40 a.m. and said it would investigate the incident. The investigation is expected to establish the precise nature of the engine malfunction and assess the bird-strike evidence. The bird remains recovered after the incident are also significant because wildlife remains from aircraft strikes can be examined to determine the species involved. The FAA's Smithsonian Feather Identification Lab program routinely analyzes bird remains from aircraft strikes to help identify the species and improve airport wildlife-management measures.

Ltd. veered off the runway during a training exercise at Baramati Airfield in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The aircraft, registered VT-SEX, had two people onboard flight instructor Captain Chirag Shashikant Doifode and cadet Abhijeet Jundre. Both escaped unharmed. The incident occurred at about 12:30 pm. The four-seat aircraft was conducting a Circuit and Landing Emergencies training exercise, during which the trainee was required to practise landing following an emergency scenario. Police and aviation authorities said the aircraft was involved in rejected-take-off exercises as part of the training sequence. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the DGCA-approved Academy of Carver Aviation aircraft “suffered a runway excursion at Baramati Airfield.” The ministry said the aircraft “was involved in a Circuit and Landing Emergencies (CL Emergencies) training exercise” and was unable to stop within the paved runway surface before veering onto the extended paved area beyond the runway threshold. A DGCA Air Safety team was sent to the site to conduct a preliminary investigation. Police said the aircraft initially entered the runway through Link Bravo and lined up at the threshold of Runway 29, where it carried out a rejected take-off exercise. It was subsequently positioned at the threshold of Runway 11 for another rejected take-off exercise. During the sequence, the aircraft could not be brought to a complete stop and continued beyond the runway before veering onto the grassy area. Police said the aircraft travelled roughly 20 feet beyond the runway end before entering the grass. Inspector Narayan Pawar said, “The brakes of the aircraft seem to have not worked,” while adding that the situation was under control. Pune Rural Deputy Superintendent of Police Chaitanya Kadam confirmed that both occupants were safe. The aircraft sustained damage during the runway excursion. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said, prima facie, damage was found to the propeller, engine cowling and nose landing gear, with a detailed assessment to be conducted by the competent authorities. The cause of the incident has not yet been established. Police said investigators were examining whether the aircraft developed a technical problem or whether another factor contributed to the runway excursion. A senior police official said, “It is too early to comment on anything,” as the investigation was still at an early stage. Hindustan Times described it as the seventh aircraft accident or incident linked to Baramati’s aviation and flight-training operations since 2022, prompting calls for a broader review of infrastructure, operational systems and oversight. Aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar said the latest incident should trigger a comprehensive review of the airfield. “It is important that the safety and confidence of trainee pilots must be paramount,” Vandekar said, adding that Baramati’s infrastructure and operational systems need to keep pace with the volume of flying activity. He called for appropriate air traffic services, modern navigation and communication systems and stronger emergency-response infrastructure. The DGCA is now examining the circumstances and contributing factors behind the August 9 runway excursion. At present, authorities have not attributed the incident to a confirmed brake failure, mechanical defect, pilot error or any other specific cause. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft landed safely at about 8 a.m. local time. The aircraft was carrying approximately 200 passengers and six crew members. After landing, passengers were evacuated using the aircraft’s emergency slides onto the taxiway rather than remaining onboard. Video shared by a passenger on TikTok showed passengers moving toward the exits and sliding onto the tarmac, while crew members could be heard directing them to leave their belongings behind and evacuate. A passenger, Jordan Conlin, who was traveling with his family, told Fox 5 Atlanta that the pilot announced that he and the co-pilot were wearing oxygen masks because of fumes in the cockpit and that the aircraft was turning back to Atlanta. Conlin also recalled the pilot instructing passengers to “brace” during the landing, describing the evacuation as chaotic as passengers left the aircraft. One crew member and one passenger received medical attention following the incident, while the remaining passengers were transported by ground crews to the terminal. Delta subsequently arranged a replacement aircraft to take the passengers to Orlando. Delta confirmed that the crew followed established procedures after reports of fumes in the flight deck and said a slide evacuation took place on a taxiway. The airline apologized to passengers, saying safety remained its top priority. The FAA said it is investigating the incident. The agency confirmed that Flight 2204 returned safely to Atlanta after reported smoke in the cockpit and that passengers evacuated via emergency slides onto the taxiway. Fochville, South Africa: The preliminary accident report, released on 28 July 2026 by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), found that the engine of a Bird Aviation Piper PA-28-180 registered ZS-ESZ was not producing power when the aircraft struck the ground near Fochville, Gauteng, on 27 June 2026. The report remains preliminary, with the investigation still ongoing and the AIID cautioning that its findings do not apportion blame or liability. According to the report, the operator was Bird Aviation, while the aircraft was being used under a hire-and-fly arrangement for hour-building. The operation was classified as Training under Part 91, and the aircraft belonged to the approved training organisation (ATO) from which it was hired. The accident involved two people, a 21-year-old Indian pilot and one passenger. Both were fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed. The pilot held a valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and was building flight hours toward a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) through the ATO. The flight took place on the afternoon of 27 June 2026, when the pilot and passenger departed Lanseria International Airport (FALA) in Gauteng on an hour-building flight, intending to return to the same airport. The flight was conducted under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) and in accordance with Part 91 of the Civil Aviation Regulations. The flight had initially been planned for 0900Z, but departure was delayed because of persistent haze and low visibility. After conditions improved, the aircraft departed Runway 07 at 1325Z, as confirmed by an air traffic control officer at Lanseria. It then flew toward the Johannesburg General Flying Area (GFA), Flight Area Dangerous 182 (FAD 182). Multiple eyewitnesses later reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low and performing unfamiliar manoeuvres. The aircraft subsequently flipped and began spinning to the left before impacting the ground. The crash occurred on a farm at Elandsfontein, south-east of Fochville, Gauteng, at coordinates 26° 35' 27.30" South, 27° 33' 41.24" East, with a field elevation of 5,124 feet. The accident was recorded at 1415Z. The pilot was a 21-year-old Indian national with a valid PPL. His licence was initially issued by the regulator on 25 May 2026 and was valid until 30 April 2027. His Class 2 aviation medical certificate was issued on 26 March 2025 and was valid until 31 March 2030. The report states that the aircraft type was endorsed on his licence and that he had no previous accidents recorded in relation to the investigation. The pilot had accumulated 132.2 total flight hours, including 19.4 hours in the previous seven days and 55.1 hours in the previous 90 days. He had flown 43.8 hours on the aircraft during the previous 90 days and had accumulated 122.7 hours on the Piper PA-28-180. The aircraft was a 1977-built Piper PA-28-180, a four-seat, single-engine, all-metal, low-wing aircraft with fixed tricycle landing gear. It was powered by a four-cylinder, naturally aspirated 180-horsepower Lycoming O-360-series engine. Its serial number was 28-3303, and it had accumulated 3,242.6 airframe hours by the time of the accident. The AIID found that the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation. Its current Certificate of Registration had been issued on 19 September 2025, while its latest Certificate of Airworthiness was valid until 31 October 2026. The aircraft underwent its mandatory periodic inspection on 13 March 2026 at 3,218.4 airframe hours, after which a Certificate of Release to Service was issued, valid until 12 March 2027 or 3,318.4 total airframe hours, whichever came first. The aircraft was maintained by an approved aircraft maintenance organisation whose certificate was valid until 30 June 2026. The organisation held Category A and Category C ratings for the aircraft's airframe and engine. The ATO's certificate had been renewed on 17 November 2025 and was valid until 28 February 2029. Fuel records showed that 111 litres of Avgas 100LL had been uplifted after the aircraft's flight on 26 June 2026, with the pilot refuelling the tanks before parking the aircraft. The Piper PA-28-180 has a fuel capacity of 189 litres, providing approximately six hours of endurance. The preliminary findings state that the aircraft departed Lanseria with full fuel tanks and no technical issues. However, fuel was found leaking from the aircraft after the accident. The report does not currently identify the fuel leak as the cause of the engine power loss. Weather conditions were favourable and were not considered a contributing factor. The 1400Z METAR from Lanseria recorded winds from 300° at 7 knots, CAVOK visibility, a temperature of 16°C, scattered clouds at 4,500 feet, a dew point of 5°C and QNH of 1026 hPa. The aircraft's navigation and communication equipment had no recorded defects before the flight. It was not equipped with a flight data recorder (FDR) or cockpit voice recorder (CVR), and the report states that neither was required for this aircraft type. The wreckage examination showed that the aircraft hit the ground in a steep nose-down attitude at high speed with little forward momentum. The debris was concentrated around the impact point, with a crater being the only ground scar identified. The aircraft came to rest facing south-east. Investigators found that the ailerons could not be moved and were both in the down position, while the elevator and rudder moved freely. The landing gear had broken and collapsed rearwards. Both wings suffered severe leading-edge damage and accordion-like deformation that ruptured the fuel tanks. The damage was consistent with heavy compressive loading during the steep, rapid-impact sequence. The top engine cowling had separated from the aircraft and was found approximately 10 metres ahead of the main wreckage. The engine cradle was deformed and the engine was facing slightly to the right. The propeller showed asymmetric damage, with one blade bent rearwards and the other showing little or no deformation. Neither blade displayed S-curve bending. The AIID said the damage pattern was consistent with the propeller being non-rotating at impact. This evidence, together with eyewitness accounts of the pilot apparently attempting to restart the engine, led investigators to conclude that the engine was not producing power at the time of impact. However, the preliminary report does not yet establish the underlying reason for the loss of engine power. The instrument panel was broken into multiple pieces, with several indicators dislodged from their original positions. The report does not provide a final interpretation of the instrument evidence at this stage. There was no evidence of a pre- or post-impact fire. Investigators considered the accident not survivable because of the extent of cockpit damage. Emergency responders reported that the pilot-in-command was not wearing his seat belt and was consequently thrown from the aircraft. Medical and pathological information is reserved for the final report. The aircraft was operating in the Johannesburg GFA within FAD 182, outside the Terminal Control Area. FAD 182 extends from the ground to Flight Level 100, or 10,000 feet, except where it intersects the TMA. Bird Aviation also used the Safely Track Me application to monitor flights. The system relied on the pilot's mobile-phone GPS signal. Tracking was active when ZS-ESZ departed Lanseria, but shortly after the aircraft exited the Johannesburg Special Rules Area West TMA, the phone stopped transmitting its GPS position and the aircraft could no longer be tracked through the application. The AIID's preliminary findings confirm that the pilot was qualified and medically fit for the flight, the aircraft was being used under a valid hire-and-fly arrangement for hour-building, the operator/ATO held a valid certificate, the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation, and its maintenance records were up to date. The investigation therefore establishes several key facts but has not yet determined the precise cause of the accident. The aircraft left Lanseria with full fuel and no known technical issues; the engine was not producing power at impact; weather was not a factor; and the aircraft entered a steep, high-speed descent before striking the ground. The AIID is continuing to examine other aspects of the accident that could have safety implications. No safety recommendations have been issued at this stage. The AIID said these will be addressed in the final report. The investigation was classified as a Category 1 accident. The AIID appointed an investigator-in-charge and a co-investigator, dispatched investigators to the site and notified the relevant states and organisations under South African regulations and ICAO Annex 13. The AIID will lead the investigation and issue the final report. The AIID has warned that the preliminary report is based on evidence gathered during an ongoing investigation and that information may change if additional evidence emerges. Accordingly, the current finding should be described as the engine not producing power at impact, rather than stating that investigators have already determined the cause of the engine power loss.

The latest result represents a major change in the ranking. ACI’s 2025 international passenger ranking placed Dubai first, Heathrow second and Incheon third. The organisation’s July 2026 airport ranking resource likewise listed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers based on the latest completed annual dataset. The new Incheon result therefore represents a preliminary H1 2026 shift rather than a completed annual ranking. The ranking shift was partly linked to major changes in global air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict. The disruption weakened the role of Middle Eastern transfer hubs, particularly Dubai, prompting some passengers travelling between Europe and Asia to reroute through Incheon. Dubai’s international passenger traffic fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March before recovering to 4.7 million by June. Incheon recorded 4.24 million transfer passengers during the first six months, an 18.1% increase from the same period a year earlier. Transfer traffic on European routes rose 63.2% to about 210,000 passengers, highlighting the shift in connecting traffic toward the South Korean hub. The airport also benefited from stronger tourism demand. Foreign travellers accounted for a record 44.4% of Incheon’s total passenger traffic in the second quarter, with growing visitor flows from markets including China and Japan contributing to the increase. Infrastructure and connectivity have also strengthened Incheon’s position. The airport’s expansion programme has raised its annual passenger-handling capacity to 106 million. It currently serves 101 airlines and 183 cities in 53 countries when passenger and cargo operations are included, while passenger services connect Incheon with 158 international destinations. That compares with 139 international destinations served by Hong Kong, 92 by Shanghai Pudong and 86 by Tokyo Narita, according to the latest reports. The airport opened in 2001 and completed its latest major expansion in 2024. Its growing international network has allowed it to absorb additional connecting traffic while maintaining its position as a major Northeast Asian hub. Incheon International Airport Corporation Acting President Kim Beom-ho credited government support, the public and airport employees for the achievement. He said the airport would continue pursuing service innovation and improving connectivity with regional airports. Washington, United States: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has ordered operators of 471 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to inspect structural components around the forward galley-door area for possible cracking, citing a condition previously identified on older 737 Next Generation jets. The finalized airworthiness directive was unveiled on August 6, 2026 and will take effect on September 10, 2026. It applies to certain in-service Boeing 737-8, 737-9 and 737-8200 aircraft, according to the FAA. The agency estimates that 471 aircraft are affected. The inspections focus on the fuselage skin, bear strap and stub frame around the forward galley-door cutout. A bear strap is a metal structural component that reinforces areas of the fuselage around openings such as doors and emergency exits. The FAA said cracking, if left unaddressed, could eventually affect the aircraft's structural integrity. Importantly, the FAA said no cracks have so far been reported in the corresponding areas of the affected 737 MAX models. The directive follows reports of cracks on several 737NG aircraft. According to the FAA's November 2025 proposal, cracks had been found in the bear strap and stub frame around the forward galley-door cutout. Boeing's investigation found surface scratches on the bear strap that were inadvertently created during the removal of sealant and adhesive in the hot-bonding process used to join the fuselage skin and bear strap. Those scratches, combined with locally elevated stresses, can reduce fatigue life and contribute to early cracking. The FAA determined that the MAX should also be inspected because the newer aircraft have a similar design and build process to the 737NG, making them susceptible to the same type of cracking. The agency warned that, if the condition developed and was not detected, it could adversely affect the aircraft's structural integrity. Boeing said it identified and reported the issue previously and has been working with airline operators on it for about six years. The company said it provided inspection instructions for affected 737NG aircraft to operators in 2019, before the FAA mandated inspections on those aircraft in 2021. Boeing has since expanded the inspection process to MAX aircraft, with the latest FAA directive making those checks mandatory. “We support both directives and continue to support our airline customers,” Boeing said in a statement. The company also said it has conducted an engineering analysis and is working on changes intended to prevent the cracking from occurring in future aircraft. The FAA's directive also calls for inspection of fuselage skin on aircraft where repairs have already been made. The agency's regulatory record says the required inspections include checks for cracks in the fuselage skin, bear strap and stub frame, along with repetitive inspections and corrective action where necessary. Fochville, South Africa: The preliminary accident report, released on 28 July 2026 by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), found that the engine of a Bird Aviation Piper PA-28-180 registered ZS-ESZ was not producing power when the aircraft struck the ground near Fochville, Gauteng, on 27 June 2026. The report remains preliminary, with the investigation still ongoing and the AIID cautioning that its findings do not apportion blame or liability. According to the report, the operator was Bird Aviation, while the aircraft was being used under a hire-and-fly arrangement for hour-building. The operation was classified as Training under Part 91, and the aircraft belonged to the approved training organisation (ATO) from which it was hired. The accident involved two people, a 21-year-old Indian pilot and one passenger. Both were fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed. The pilot held a valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and was building flight hours toward a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) through the ATO. The flight took place on the afternoon of 27 June 2026, when the pilot and passenger departed Lanseria International Airport (FALA) in Gauteng on an hour-building flight, intending to return to the same airport. The flight was conducted under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) and in accordance with Part 91 of the Civil Aviation Regulations. The flight had initially been planned for 0900Z, but departure was delayed because of persistent haze and low visibility. After conditions improved, the aircraft departed Runway 07 at 1325Z, as confirmed by an air traffic control officer at Lanseria. It then flew toward the Johannesburg General Flying Area (GFA), Flight Area Dangerous 182 (FAD 182). Multiple eyewitnesses later reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low and performing unfamiliar manoeuvres. The aircraft subsequently flipped and began spinning to the left before impacting the ground. The crash occurred on a farm at Elandsfontein, south-east of Fochville, Gauteng, at coordinates 26° 35' 27.30" South, 27° 33' 41.24" East, with a field elevation of 5,124 feet. The accident was recorded at 1415Z. The pilot was a 21-year-old Indian national with a valid PPL. His licence was initially issued by the regulator on 25 May 2026 and was valid until 30 April 2027. His Class 2 aviation medical certificate was issued on 26 March 2025 and was valid until 31 March 2030. The report states that the aircraft type was endorsed on his licence and that he had no previous accidents recorded in relation to the investigation. The pilot had accumulated 132.2 total flight hours, including 19.4 hours in the previous seven days and 55.1 hours in the previous 90 days. He had flown 43.8 hours on the aircraft during the previous 90 days and had accumulated 122.7 hours on the Piper PA-28-180. The aircraft was a 1977-built Piper PA-28-180, a four-seat, single-engine, all-metal, low-wing aircraft with fixed tricycle landing gear. It was powered by a four-cylinder, naturally aspirated 180-horsepower Lycoming O-360-series engine. Its serial number was 28-3303, and it had accumulated 3,242.6 airframe hours by the time of the accident. The AIID found that the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation. Its current Certificate of Registration had been issued on 19 September 2025, while its latest Certificate of Airworthiness was valid until 31 October 2026. The aircraft underwent its mandatory periodic inspection on 13 March 2026 at 3,218.4 airframe hours, after which a Certificate of Release to Service was issued, valid until 12 March 2027 or 3,318.4 total airframe hours, whichever came first. The aircraft was maintained by an approved aircraft maintenance organisation whose certificate was valid until 30 June 2026. The organisation held Category A and Category C ratings for the aircraft's airframe and engine. The ATO's certificate had been renewed on 17 November 2025 and was valid until 28 February 2029. Fuel records showed that 111 litres of Avgas 100LL had been uplifted after the aircraft's flight on 26 June 2026, with the pilot refuelling the tanks before parking the aircraft. The Piper PA-28-180 has a fuel capacity of 189 litres, providing approximately six hours of endurance. The preliminary findings state that the aircraft departed Lanseria with full fuel tanks and no technical issues. However, fuel was found leaking from the aircraft after the accident. The report does not currently identify the fuel leak as the cause of the engine power loss. Weather conditions were favourable and were not considered a contributing factor. The 1400Z METAR from Lanseria recorded winds from 300° at 7 knots, CAVOK visibility, a temperature of 16°C, scattered clouds at 4,500 feet, a dew point of 5°C and QNH of 1026 hPa. The aircraft's navigation and communication equipment had no recorded defects before the flight. It was not equipped with a flight data recorder (FDR) or cockpit voice recorder (CVR), and the report states that neither was required for this aircraft type. The wreckage examination showed that the aircraft hit the ground in a steep nose-down attitude at high speed with little forward momentum. The debris was concentrated around the impact point, with a crater being the only ground scar identified. The aircraft came to rest facing south-east. Investigators found that the ailerons could not be moved and were both in the down position, while the elevator and rudder moved freely. The landing gear had broken and collapsed rearwards. Both wings suffered severe leading-edge damage and accordion-like deformation that ruptured the fuel tanks. The damage was consistent with heavy compressive loading during the steep, rapid-impact sequence. The top engine cowling had separated from the aircraft and was found approximately 10 metres ahead of the main wreckage. The engine cradle was deformed and the engine was facing slightly to the right. The propeller showed asymmetric damage, with one blade bent rearwards and the other showing little or no deformation. Neither blade displayed S-curve bending. The AIID said the damage pattern was consistent with the propeller being non-rotating at impact. This evidence, together with eyewitness accounts of the pilot apparently attempting to restart the engine, led investigators to conclude that the engine was not producing power at the time of impact. However, the preliminary report does not yet establish the underlying reason for the loss of engine power. The instrument panel was broken into multiple pieces, with several indicators dislodged from their original positions. The report does not provide a final interpretation of the instrument evidence at this stage. There was no evidence of a pre- or post-impact fire. Investigators considered the accident not survivable because of the extent of cockpit damage. Emergency responders reported that the pilot-in-command was not wearing his seat belt and was consequently thrown from the aircraft. Medical and pathological information is reserved for the final report. The aircraft was operating in the Johannesburg GFA within FAD 182, outside the Terminal Control Area. FAD 182 extends from the ground to Flight Level 100, or 10,000 feet, except where it intersects the TMA. Bird Aviation also used the Safely Track Me application to monitor flights. The system relied on the pilot's mobile-phone GPS signal. Tracking was active when ZS-ESZ departed Lanseria, but shortly after the aircraft exited the Johannesburg Special Rules Area West TMA, the phone stopped transmitting its GPS position and the aircraft could no longer be tracked through the application. The AIID's preliminary findings confirm that the pilot was qualified and medically fit for the flight, the aircraft was being used under a valid hire-and-fly arrangement for hour-building, the operator/ATO held a valid certificate, the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation, and its maintenance records were up to date. The investigation therefore establishes several key facts but has not yet determined the precise cause of the accident. The aircraft left Lanseria with full fuel and no known technical issues; the engine was not producing power at impact; weather was not a factor; and the aircraft entered a steep, high-speed descent before striking the ground. The AIID is continuing to examine other aspects of the accident that could have safety implications. No safety recommendations have been issued at this stage. The AIID said these will be addressed in the final report. The investigation was classified as a Category 1 accident. The AIID appointed an investigator-in-charge and a co-investigator, dispatched investigators to the site and notified the relevant states and organisations under South African regulations and ICAO Annex 13. The AIID will lead the investigation and issue the final report. The AIID has warned that the preliminary report is based on evidence gathered during an ongoing investigation and that information may change if additional evidence emerges. Accordingly, the current finding should be described as the engine not producing power at impact, rather than stating that investigators have already determined the cause of the engine power loss.

Incheon, South Korea: South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has become the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic for the first time, handling about 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary Airports Council International data reported on August 13. Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, overtaking Dubai’s previous No. 1 position. The latest result represents a major change in the ranking. ACI’s 2025 international passenger ranking placed Dubai first, Heathrow second and Incheon third. The organisation’s July 2026 airport ranking resource likewise listed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers based on the latest completed annual dataset. The new Incheon result therefore represents a preliminary H1 2026 shift rather than a completed annual ranking. The ranking shift was partly linked to major changes in global air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict. The disruption weakened the role of Middle Eastern transfer hubs, particularly Dubai, prompting some passengers travelling between Europe and Asia to reroute through Incheon. Dubai’s international passenger traffic fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March before recovering to 4.7 million by June. Incheon recorded 4.24 million transfer passengers during the first six months, an 18.1% increase from the same period a year earlier. Transfer traffic on European routes rose 63.2% to about 210,000 passengers, highlighting the shift in connecting traffic toward the South Korean hub. The airport also benefited from stronger tourism demand. Foreign travellers accounted for a record 44.4% of Incheon’s total passenger traffic in the second quarter, with growing visitor flows from markets including China and Japan contributing to the increase. Infrastructure and connectivity have also strengthened Incheon’s position. The airport’s expansion programme has raised its annual passenger-handling capacity to 106 million. It currently serves 101 airlines and 183 cities in 53 countries when passenger and cargo operations are included, while passenger services connect Incheon with 158 international destinations. That compares with 139 international destinations served by Hong Kong, 92 by Shanghai Pudong and 86 by Tokyo Narita, according to the latest reports. The airport opened in 2001 and completed its latest major expansion in 2024. Its growing international network has allowed it to absorb additional connecting traffic while maintaining its position as a major Northeast Asian hub. Incheon International Airport Corporation Acting President Kim Beom-ho credited government support, the public and airport employees for the achievement. The finalized airworthiness directive was unveiled on August 6, 2026 and will take effect on September 10, 2026. It applies to certain in-service Boeing 737-8, 737-9 and 737-8200 aircraft, according to the FAA. The agency estimates that 471 aircraft are affected. The inspections focus on the fuselage skin, bear strap and stub frame around the forward galley-door cutout. A bear strap is a metal structural component that reinforces areas of the fuselage around openings such as doors and emergency exits. The FAA said cracking, if left unaddressed, could eventually affect the aircraft's structural integrity. Importantly, the FAA said no cracks have so far been reported in the corresponding areas of the affected 737 MAX models. The directive follows reports of cracks on several 737NG aircraft. According to the FAA's November 2025 proposal, cracks had been found in the bear strap and stub frame around the forward galley-door cutout. Boeing's investigation found surface scratches on the bear strap that were inadvertently created during the removal of sealant and adhesive in the hot-bonding process used to join the fuselage skin and bear strap. Those scratches, combined with locally elevated stresses, can reduce fatigue life and contribute to early cracking. The FAA determined that the MAX should also be inspected because the newer aircraft have a similar design and build process to the 737NG, making them susceptible to the same type of cracking. The agency warned that, if the condition developed and was not detected, it could adversely affect the aircraft's structural integrity. Boeing said it identified and reported the issue previously and has been working with airline operators on it for about six years. The company said it provided inspection instructions for affected 737NG aircraft to operators in 2019, before the FAA mandated inspections on those aircraft in 2021. The Asia-Pacific and Europe/North Atlantic regions each reported three fatal accidents, while a single catastrophic crash in South America caused 62 deaths. Overall, Asia-Pacific recorded the highest number of fatalities, followed by South America, then Europe and the North Atlantic. Alongside accident data, ICAO flagged growing risks from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) disruptions, such as jamming and spoofing, which threaten the reliability of modern navigation. The organization is updating guidance and working with member states to protect GNSS integrity, while also strengthening runway safety initiatives, turbulence monitoring, and wildlife strike reporting. ICAO is further developing frameworks for civil-military cooperation to manage risks linked to conflict zones and restricted airspace, and it is preparing safety systems for the integration of unmanned aircraft and advanced air mobility vehicles into shared skies. ICAO leaders underscored that the rise in accidents is a wake-up call for regulators, airlines, and governments worldwide. Caracas, Venezuela: Venezuelan authorities declared a nationwide state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within seconds of each other on June 24, triggering widespread destruction across Caracas and several surrounding regions, forcing the closure of the nation's main international airport and launching a large-scale search-and-rescue operation. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas near Morón, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. Seismologists described the event as a rare seismic doublet. More than 20 aftershocks were recorded in the hours that followed. The earthquakes caused extensive damage across the capital and nearby states, with multiple residential and commercial buildings collapsing, roads and transportation infrastructure disrupted, and emergency crews deployed throughout affected areas. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced a state of emergency during a televised address alongside National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. While extending condolences to families of those killed, Rodríguez did not provide an official nationwide death toll or injury count, saying authorities were still assessing the scale of the disaster. However, these projections remain preliminary and are not official casualty figures. A tsunami warning was briefly issued after the earthquakes but was subsequently withdrawn. The earthquakes struck during a public holiday period, sending thousands of residents into streets and open areas as buildings swayed across Caracas and surrounding regions. Witnesses described walls cracking, staircases shifting and objects falling from ceilings during the prolonged shaking. Damage has been reported across several states, including Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo and Falcón. In La Guaira, where the country's main airport is located, authorities reported significant structural impacts and disruptions to communications and transportation links. The organisation held Category A and Category C ratings for the aircraft's airframe and engine. The ATO's certificate had been renewed on 17 November 2025 and was valid until 28 February 2029. Fuel records showed that 111 litres of Avgas 100LL had been uplifted after the aircraft's flight on 26 June 2026, with the pilot refuelling the tanks before parking the aircraft. The Piper PA-28-180 has a fuel capacity of 189 litres, providing approximately six hours of endurance. The preliminary findings state that the aircraft departed Lanseria with full fuel tanks and no technical issues. However, fuel was found leaking from the aircraft after the accident. The report does not currently identify the fuel leak as the cause of the engine power loss. Weather conditions were favourable and were not considered a contributing factor. The debris was concentrated around the impact point, with a crater being the only ground scar identified. The aircraft came to rest facing south-east. Investigators found that the ailerons could not be moved and were both in the down position, while the elevator and rudder moved freely. The landing gear had broken and collapsed rearwards. Both wings suffered severe leading-edge damage and accordion-like deformation that ruptured the fuel tanks. However, the preliminary report does not yet establish the underlying reason for the loss of engine power. The instrument panel was broken into multiple pieces, with several indicators dislodged from their original positions. The report does not provide a final interpretation of the instrument evidence at this stage. There was no evidence of a pre- or post-impact fire. Investigators considered the accident not survivable because of the extent of cockpit damage. The AIID's preliminary findings confirm that the pilot was qualified and medically fit for the flight, the aircraft was being used under a valid hire-and-fly arrangement for hour-building, the operator/ATO held a valid certificate, the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation, and its maintenance records were up to date. The investigation therefore establishes several key facts but has not yet determined the precise cause of the accident. The aircraft left Lanseria with full fuel and no known technical issues; the engine was not producing power at impact; weather was not a factor; and the aircraft entered a steep, high-speed descent before striking the ground. The AIID is continuing to examine other aspects of the accident that could have safety implications. No safety recommendations have been issued at this stage. The AIID said these will be addressed in the final report. The investigation was classified as a Category 1 accident. The AIID appointed an investigator-in-charge and a co-investigator, dispatched investigators to the site and notified the relevant states and organisations under South African regulations and ICAO Annex 13. His Class 2 aviation medical certificate was issued on 26 March 2025 and was valid until 31 March 2030. The report states that the aircraft type was endorsed on his licence and that he had no previous accidents recorded in relation to the investigation. The pilot had accumulated 132.2 total flight hours, including 19.4 hours in the previous seven days and 55.1 hours in the previous 90 days. He had flown 43.8 hours on the aircraft during the previous 90 days and had accumulated 122.7 hours on the Piper PA-28-180. The aircraft was a 1977-built Piper PA-28-180, a four-seat, single-engine, all-metal, low-wing aircraft with fixed tricycle landing gear. It was powered by a four-cylinder, naturally aspirated 180-horsepower Lycoming O-360-series engine. Its serial number was 28-3303, and it had accumulated 3,242.6 airframe hours by the time of the accident. The AIID found that the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation. Its current Certificate of Registration had been issued on 19 September 2025, while its latest Certificate of Airworthiness was valid until 31 October 2026. The aircraft underwent its mandatory periodic inspection on 13 March 2026 at 3,218.4 airframe hours, after which a Certificate of Release to Service was issued, valid until 12 March 2027 or 3,318.4 total airframe hours, whichever came first. The aircraft was maintained by an approved aircraft maintenance organisation whose certificate was valid until 30 June 2026. The organisation held Category A and Category C ratings for the aircraft's airframe and engine. The ATO's certificate had been renewed on 17 November 2025 and was valid until 28 February 2029. Fuel records showed that 111 litres of Avgas 100LL had been uplifted after the aircraft's flight on 26 June 2026, with the pilot refuelling the tanks before parking the aircraft. The Piper PA-28-180 has a fuel capacity of 189 litres, providing approximately six hours of endurance. The preliminary findings state that the aircraft departed Lanseria with full fuel tanks and no technical issues. However, fuel was found leaking from the aircraft after the accident. The report does not currently identify the fuel leak as the cause of the engine power loss. Weather conditions were favourable and were not considered a contributing factor. The 1400Z METAR from Lanseria recorded winds from 300° at 7 knots, CAVOK visibility, a temperature of 16°C, scattered clouds at 4,500 feet, a dew point of 5°C and QNH of 1026 hPa. The aircraft's navigation and communication equipment had no recorded defects before the flight. It was not equipped with a flight data recorder (FDR) or cockpit voice recorder (CVR), and the report states that neither was required for this aircraft type. The wreckage examination showed that the aircraft hit the ground in a steep nose-down attitude at high speed with little forward momentum. The debris was concentrated around the impact point, with a crater being the only ground scar identified. The aircraft came to rest facing south-east. Investigators found that the ailerons could not be moved and were both in the down position, while the elevator and rudder moved freely. The landing gear had broken and collapsed rearwards. Both wings suffered severe leading-edge damage and accordion-like deformation that ruptured the fuel tanks. The damage was consistent with heavy compressive loading during the steep, rapid-impact sequence. The top engine cowling had separated from the aircraft and was found approximately 10 metres ahead of the main wreckage. The engine cradle was deformed and the engine was facing slightly to the right. The propeller showed asymmetric damage, with one blade bent rearwards and the other showing little or no deformation. Neither blade displayed S-curve bending. The AIID said the damage pattern was consistent with the propeller being non-rotating at impact. This evidence, together with eyewitness accounts of the pilot apparently attempting to restart the engine, led investigators to conclude that the engine was not producing power at the time of impact. However, the preliminary report does not yet establish the underlying reason for the loss of engine power. The instrument panel was broken into multiple pieces, with several indicators dislodged from their original positions. The report does not provide a final interpretation of the instrument evidence at this stage. There was no evidence of a pre- or post-impact fire. Investigators considered the accident not survivable because of the extent of cockpit damage. Emergency responders reported that the pilot-in-command was not wearing his seat belt and was consequently thrown from the aircraft. Medical and pathological information is reserved for the final report. The aircraft was operating in the Johannesburg GFA within FAD 182, outside the Terminal Control Area. FAD 182 extends from the ground to Flight Level 100, or 10,000 feet, except where it intersects the TMA. Bird Aviation also used the Safely Track Me application to monitor flights. The system relied on the pilot's mobile-phone GPS signal. Tracking was active when ZS-ESZ departed Lanseria, but shortly after the aircraft exited the Johannesburg Special Rules Area West TMA, the phone stopped transmitting its GPS position and the aircraft could no longer be tracked through the application. The AIID's preliminary findings confirm that the pilot was qualified and medically fit for the flight, the aircraft was being used under a valid hire-and-fly arrangement for hour-building, the operator/ATO held a valid certificate, the aircraft had valid registration and airworthiness documentation, and its maintenance records were up to date. The investigation therefore establishes several key facts but has not yet determined the precise cause of the accident. The aircraft left Lanseria with full fuel and no known technical issues; the engine was not producing power at impact; weather was not a factor; and the aircraft entered a steep, high-speed descent before striking the ground. The AIID is continuing to examine other aspects of the accident that could have safety implications. No safety recommendations have been issued at this stage. The AIID said these will be addressed in the final report. The investigation was classified as a Category 1 accident. The AIID appointed an investigator-in-charge and a co-investigator, dispatched investigators to the site and notified the relevant states and organisations under South African regulations and ICAO Annex 13. The AIID will lead the investigation and issue the final report. The AIID has warned that the preliminary report is based on evidence gathered during an ongoing investigation and that information may change if additional evidence emerges. Accordingly, the current finding should be described as the engine not producing power at impact, rather than stating that investigators have already determined the cause of the engine power loss.

Incheon, South Korea: South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has become the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic for the first time, handling about 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary Airports Council International data reported on August 13. Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, overtaking Dubai’s previous No. 1 position. The latest result represents a major change in the ranking. ACI’s 2025 international passenger ranking placed Dubai first, Heathrow second and Incheon third. The organisation’s July 2026 airport ranking resource likewise listed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers based on the latest completed annual dataset. The new Incheon result therefore represents a preliminary H1 2026 shift rather than a completed annual ranking. The ranking shift was partly linked to major changes in global air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict. The disruption weakened the role of Middle Eastern transfer hubs, particularly Dubai, prompting some passengers travelling between Europe and Asia to reroute through Incheon. Dubai’s international passenger traffic fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March before recovering to 4.7 million by June. Incheon recorded 4.24 million transfer passengers during the first six months, an 18.1% increase from the same period a year earlier. Transfer traffic on European routes rose 63.2% to about 210,000 passengers, highlighting the shift in connecting traffic toward the South Korean hub. The airport also benefited from stronger tourism demand. Foreign travellers accounted for a record 44.4% of Incheon’s total passenger traffic in the second quarter, with growing visitor flows from markets including China and Japan contributing to the increase. Infrastructure and connectivity have also strengthened Incheon’s position. The airport’s expansion programme has raised its annual passenger-handling capacity to 106 million. It currently serves 101 airlines and 183 cities in 53 countries when passenger and cargo operations are included, while passenger services connect Incheon with 158 international destinations. That compares with 139 international destinations served by Hong Kong, 92 by Shanghai Pudong and 86 by Tokyo Narita, according to the latest reports. The airport opened in 2001 and completed its latest major expansion in 2024. Its growing international network has allowed it to absorb additional connecting traffic while maintaining its position as a major Northeast Asian hub. Incheon International Airport Corporation Acting President Kim Beom-ho credited government support, the public and airport employees for the achievement. He said the airport would continue pursuing service innovation and improving connectivity with regional airports. Kim said: “We’re grateful for the government’s support, the public’s encouragement” and the efforts of airport personnel. The corporation said it plans to strengthen passenger convenience while pursuing service innovation, artificial-intelligence transformation and infrastructure for urban air mobility. It also plans to expand links between Incheon and regional airports as South Korea seeks to increase inbound tourism and improve overseas travel access for passengers outside the Seoul metropolitan area.

South Korea’s Incheon Overtakes Dubai To Become World’s Busiest International Airport

Washington, United States: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has ordered operators of 471 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to inspect structural components around the forward galley-door area for possible cracking, citing a condition previously identified on older 737 Next Generation jets. The finalized airworthiness directive was unveiled on August 6, 2026 and will take effect on September 10, 2026. It applies to certain in-service Boeing 737-8, 737-9 and 737-8200 aircraft, according to the FAA. The agency estimates that 471 aircraft are affected. The inspections focus on the fuselage skin, bear strap and stub frame around the forward galley-door cutout. A bear strap is a metal structural component that reinforces areas of the fuselage around openings such as doors and emergency exits. The FAA said cracking, if left unaddressed, could eventually affect the aircraft's structural integrity. Importantly, the FAA said no cracks have so far been reported in the corresponding areas of the affected 737 MAX models. The directive follows reports of cracks on several 737NG aircraft. According to the FAA's November 2025 proposal, cracks had been found in the bear strap and stub frame around the forward galley-door cutout. Boeing's investigation found surface scratches on the bear strap that were inadvertently created during the removal of sealant and adhesive in the hot-bonding process used to join the fuselage skin and bear strap. Those scratches, combined with locally elevated stresses, can reduce fatigue life and contribute to early cracking. The FAA determined that the MAX should also be inspected because the newer aircraft have a similar design and build process to the 737NG, making them susceptible to the same type of cracking. The agency warned that, if the condition developed and was not detected, it could adversely affect the aircraft's structural integrity. Boeing said it identified and reported the issue previously and has been working with airline operators on it for about six years. The company said it provided inspection instructions for affected 737NG aircraft to operators in 2019, before the FAA mandated inspections on those aircraft in 2021. Boeing has since expanded the inspection process to MAX aircraft, with the latest FAA directive making those checks mandatory. “We support both directives and continue to support our airline customers,” Boeing said in a statement. The company also said it has conducted an engineering analysis and is working on changes intended to prevent the cracking from occurring in future aircraft. The FAA's directive also calls for inspection of fuselage skin on aircraft where repairs have already been made. The agency's regulatory record says the required inspections include checks for cracks in the fuselage skin, bear strap and stub frame, along with repetitive inspections and corrective action where necessary. The action adds another structural inspection requirement to the 737 family after the FAA previously ordered inspections of 737NG aircraft over the same general cracking concern. The development also comes as Boeing remains under heightened regulatory scrutiny following years of safety and production issues involving the 737 MAX.
