Maine, United States: A Diamond DA20-A1 Katana single-engine aircraft crashed into the water near Fort William Henry in Bristol, Maine, on Thursday, August 20, killing the pilot and injuring the passenger. Two men were aboard the aircraft when it went down near the mouth of the Pemaquid River, where it empties into Pemaquid Harbor. The crash was reported at around 1 p.m. local time, while the Federal Aviation Administration placed the crash time at approximately 1:40 p.m. The aircraft came down near Fort William Henry in the New Harbor area of Bristol, in Lincoln County, and was found upside down in approximately four feet of water close to shore. The aircraft was identified by the FAA as a Diamond DA20, a two-seat, single-engine aircraft. Aircraft-registration and aviation records identify the accident aircraft as N83RF, a 1996 Diamond DA20-A1 Katana, serial number 10139. The aircraft is a fixed-wing, single-engine airplane with two seats and a Rotax reciprocating engine. Current registration data identifies it as privately registered rather than operated by an airline. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the aircraft had departed Brunswick Executive Airport and was headed for Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head, roughly east of the crash site. Investigators initially believed the aircraft may have experienced a mechanical problem, but officials stressed that the actual cause had not been established. The sheriff's office said, “Initial information indicated the aircraft had left Brunswick Airport with a destination of the Knox County Airport and possibly experienced some type of mechanical failure.” The aircraft's final moments were followed by a rapid response from people on the shoreline. Nearby residents and a building crew who witnessed the crash rushed into the water to help. The pilot was pulled from the aircraft but died at the scene, while the passenger managed to escape from the wreckage on his own. The passenger was taken to MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital in Damariscotta, at the Miles campus, with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said he was expected to survive. The identities of both occupants had not been released in the latest reports. The emergency response involved the Bristol Fire and Rescue Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service. The Maine Marine Patrol also assisted at the crash site. Responders placed containment equipment around the aircraft, which was lying inverted in the shallow harbor water. A local marine barge was subsequently used to remove the Diamond DA20 from the water. The aircraft was taken to a secure location where it could be examined as part of the federal investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. FAA public affairs specialist Rick Breitenfeldt said the “FAA, as well as the National Transportation Safety Board, will investigate the cause of the crash.” No official cause had been determined as of the latest available reports. Alaska, United States: A twin-engine Cessna 441 charter aircraft carrying eight people crashed near the remote Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in western Alaska on Thursday, August 20, while approaching Cape Newenham. The aircraft, operated by Security Aviation, had departed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and was headed to Cape Newenham when it went down west of Cape Newenham LRRS Airport at about 12:15 p.m. local time. NTSB Alaska region chief Clint Johnson confirmed that two pilots and six passengers were aboard, but officials had not released their condition or confirmed any fatalities or survivors at the time of reporting. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center launched a search-and-rescue mission after receiving a report of an “aircraft incident” near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site. Johnson, the NTSB’s Alaska region chief, provided the passenger and crew count to The Associated Press and said he did not immediately have details on the status of those aboard. AP reported that Johnson said the aircraft was believed to have crashed early Thursday afternoon while on approach to Cape Newenham. “The information received so far is preliminary,” Johnson said. According to the FAA, the aircraft crashed west of Cape Newenham LRRS Airport at 12:15 p.m. local time. The Cessna 441 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft. Security Aviation, an Anchorage-based charter operator, lists the Cessna 441 Conquest II among its fleet and says the aircraft is suited for operations across Alaska, including airports with gravel runways and challenging weather and airport environments. The aircraft was believed to have gone down during its approach to Cape Newenham rather than after landing. However, authorities have not disclosed what caused the aircraft to crash, whether the crew issued an emergency call, whether there was a mechanical problem, or what the weather conditions were at the time of the accident. None of those factors has been identified by investigators as a cause. The crash occurred near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, a remote facility in western Alaska. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center said it began a search-and-rescue operation after receiving a report of an “aircraft incident” in the area. Authorities had not publicly confirmed whether rescuers had reached all eight occupants, whether anyone had survived, or whether there were fatalities. Carlisle, United States: A Cessna 150 collided with a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter at Carlisle Regional Airport in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday evening, August 19, killing the Cessna pilot and injuring two state police troopers aboard the helicopter. The collision occurred near a runway at the airport, about 110 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The FAA identified the aircraft involved as a Cessna 150 and a Bell 407. The Cessna pilot, believed to have been the aircraft's only occupant, died in the crash. Authorities had not released the pilot's identity pending notification of next of kin. The Bell 407 was operated by the Pennsylvania State Police and was carrying two members of the department's aviation unit, Cpl. Bryce Corman and Tpr. Jason Mills. The helicopter was conducting a routine training exercise at Carlisle after operating from its Harrisburg base. According to Acting Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Lt. Col. George Bivens, the helicopter was positioned several feet above a grassy area next to a runway when the Cessna approached from behind. The aircraft came down along the runway before veering sharply to the right at the last moment and striking the helicopter from the rear. “As that Cessna came down along that runway for an unknown reason, it veered hard to the right. At the last moment, it struck the helicopter from the rear,” Bivens said. The Cessna struck the helicopter's rear section, involving the tail rotor and then the main rotor, sending both aircraft into a violent crash. The Cessna broke into multiple pieces, while the Bell 407 lost its rotor blades and tail boom before rolling over and coming to rest on its side, partially on its roof. The two troopers were initially trapped inside the helicopter. Corman was able to push out a window and help Mills escape through the opening. Mills was believed to have suffered more serious injuries and significant bleeding, according to Bivens. Both troopers were taken to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Ashley Ludwig, the hospital's trauma medical director, said they arrived as Level 1 trauma patients but had only minor injuries and were in stable condition. One was expected to be discharged Wednesday night, while the other was admitted for further observation. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said the helicopter crew was conducting routine training when the collision occurred. He said the helicopter pilots would not have been able to see the Cessna approaching from behind. “The pilots would not have been able to even see that airplane approaching them,” Paris said. Governor Josh Shapiro visited the medical center and praised the emergency response and medical teams involved in treating the injured troopers. “Tonight could have been much worse,” Shapiro said, adding that the response was “an example of Pennsylvania at its finest.” Emergency personnel responded to the airport following the crash, and the coroner was called to the scene. Local residents Patrick Brown and Lloyd Slusser also reportedly crossed a fence and ran toward the wreckage to assist after witnessing the crash. Although the FAA and NTSB described the incident as a midair collision, Pennsylvania State Police later said the helicopter was on the ground at the time of the impact. Sifnos, Greece: A private Bell 206 helicopter operated by Bellavia Aviation Services crashed near the heliport on the Greek island of Sifnos on August 17, killing all three people on board. The helicopter was carrying Greek pilot Giorgos Raikos and British newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert. Local reports identified the couple as tourists travelling to Sifnos for their honeymoon. The flight had departed from Markopoulo, near Athens, and was scheduled to arrive at Sifnos at about 6:15 p.m. local time. The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the Tholos area, close to the island’s heliport and residential properties. Greece’s Fire Service said its operations centre was alerted at 6:17 p.m. Two firefighters and one vehicle were dispatched to tackle the fire, while a rescue team from nearby Syros was sent by a Fire Service RAFNAR high-speed vessel to reinforce the response. The helicopter crashed during its approach to Sifnos and burst into flames on impact. Firefighters recovered the bodies of all three occupants while extinguishing the blaze. Local reports said two victims were found in the wreckage, while the third was located a short distance away. The deputy mayor of Sifnos, Manolis Foundoulakis, said he arrived at the scene minutes after the crash and described the aircraft as almost completely destroyed. “What I saw was an amorphous mass, because almost nothing was left of the helicopter,” he told Greek media. The crash occurred close to homes, but reports said no neighbouring properties were damaged. A local resident told Greek media that the wreckage fell only about 50 metres from inhabited houses and the landing area, beside the Monastery of Panagia Vrysi. The aircraft was identified by multiple reports as a Bell 206 operated by Bellavia Aviation Services, a Greek helicopter charter operator that advertises private helicopter transfers to Sifnos and other Greek destinations. The Fire Service initially secured the scene and conducted the preliminary investigation, while the National Air and Railway Accident Investigation and Safety Board (EODASAAM) is expected to investigate the aviation accident and determine its cause. The investigation will focus on the final moments of the flight, the aircraft’s technical condition, possible mechanical failure, the flight path and available records, weather conditions, witness accounts and the video showing the aircraft’s final movements. Authorities have not yet released a definitive cause, and mechanical failure, human factors and other possibilities remain under examination.

Mogadishu, Somalia: Somali Airlines is targeting a return to scheduled passenger operations around mid-September 2026, more than 35 years after the national carrier stopped flying amid Somalia’s civil war, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority. Ahmed Ma’allin, director of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, said the relaunch preparations had reached their final stage. “Somali Airlines is in its final stages, the first flight will be around mid September,” he said. The latest target would mark the airline’s first scheduled commercial operations since 1991, when its services were halted following the collapse of Somalia’s central government and the outbreak of civil war. Somali Airlines was established in 1964 and previously operated a network linking Somalia with destinations in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The September target is the latest in a series of attempts to restore the state-owned carrier. In July 2025, the Somali government announced an agreement involving two Airbus A320 aircraft as the initial fleet for the revived airline. At the time, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Farah Nuuh said the aircraft were expected to enter service within two months. The minister said during the July 2025 announcement in Mogadishu that the government had acquired two A320s and planned to expand the fleet. “For now, we shall start with these two, then two or three more will follow,” he said. The government subsequently set additional timelines for the airline’s return, including a target to resume operations before the end of 2025. That deadline passed without the carrier beginning scheduled commercial services, making the September 2026 target another attempt to turn the long-running revival plan into an operating airline. The initial fleet is expected to comprise two Airbus A320 aircraft secured under the 2025 agreement. The government has indicated that the two aircraft are only the first phase of a wider fleet-building programme, with additional aircraft expected as the airline expands. However, aircraft acquisition alone does not complete the restart process. The airline must satisfy safety and regulatory requirements, obtain the necessary operating approvals and ensure that pilots, engineers, cabin crew and other personnel are appropriately qualified. Maintenance arrangements, insurance, flight planning, airport handling and other operational systems must also be in place before regular commercial services can begin. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority’s current aeronautical information system shows that Somalia has continued developing its regulatory and operational aviation framework. Its 2026 aeronautical information publication is effective from July 9, 2026, and includes current material covering Somalia’s airspace, airports and flight operations. Despite the September target, the authorities have not publicly disclosed a specific inaugural route, destination list or frequency for Somali Airlines in the August 2026 reports reviewed. The reports also do not establish a confirmed date within September beyond Ma’allin’s indication that the first flight could be around the middle of the month. The airline’s historical network, however, included destinations in East Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The revived carrier is expected to operate initially with the A320s and expand its network as additional aircraft become available. The government’s longer-term objective is to build a national airline capable of competing with established international and regional carriers serving Somalia. The revival also has significance beyond the airline itself. Somali officials have previously linked the project to improved connectivity for the Somali diaspora, employment in aviation and related industries, reduced dependence on foreign carriers and the broader rebuilding of the country’s aviation sector. The government’s 2025 announcement was made at the Prime Minister’s Office in Mogadishu, where officials confirmed the acquisition of the two A320 aircraft. The official Somali National News Agency, SONNA, described the return of the carrier as part of Somalia’s broader recovery and rebuilding efforts. Somalia has also made wider progress in rebuilding its aviation system after decades of disruption. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority’s current publications show an active regulatory framework, while the country has continued developing airport and air-navigation infrastructure.

The single-seat fighter was operating from JASDF Naha Air Base and was returning from a scramble mission conducted as part of Japan’s response to a possible airspace intrusion. Montreal, Canada: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has sounded a strong warning on global air safety, highlighting rising accident rates as flight activity reaches record levels. In its latest State of Global Aviation Safety report released this month, the UN aviation agency revealed that 2024 saw 95 accidents involving scheduled commercial flights, compared with 66 the previous year. Of these, 10 were fatal, resulting in 296 deaths, an alarming jump from 72 in 2023. The global accident rate also rose to 2.56 per million departures, up from 1.87 the previous year. While ICAO stressed that aviation remains the safest form of travel, the organization called for urgent international action to address mounting risks as passenger demand continues to grow worldwide. The Asia-Pacific and Europe/North Atlantic regions each reported three fatal accidents, while a single catastrophic crash in South America caused 62 deaths. Overall, Asia-Pacific recorded the highest number of fatalities, followed by South America, then Europe and the North Atlantic. Alongside accident data, ICAO flagged growing risks from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) disruptions, such as jamming and spoofing, which threaten the reliability of modern navigation. The organization is updating guidance and working with member states to protect GNSS integrity, while also strengthening runway safety initiatives, turbulence monitoring, and wildlife strike reporting. ICAO is further developing frameworks for civil-military cooperation to manage risks linked to conflict zones and restricted airspace, and it is preparing safety systems for the integration of unmanned aircraft and advanced air mobility vehicles into shared skies. ICAO leaders underscored that the rise in accidents is a wake-up call for regulators, airlines, and governments worldwide. Incheon, South Korea: South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has become the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic for the first time, handling about 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary Airports Council International data reported on August 13. Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, overtaking Dubai’s previous No. 1 position. The latest result represents a major change in the ranking. ACI’s 2025 international passenger ranking placed Dubai first, Heathrow second and Incheon third. The organisation’s July 2026 airport ranking resource likewise listed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers based on the latest completed annual dataset. The new Incheon result therefore represents a preliminary H1 2026 shift rather than a completed annual ranking. The ranking shift was partly linked to major changes in global air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict. The disruption weakened the role of Middle Eastern transfer hubs, particularly Dubai, prompting some passengers travelling between Europe and Asia to reroute through Incheon. Dubai’s international passenger traffic fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March before recovering to 4.7 million by June. Incheon recorded 4.24 million transfer passengers during the first six months, an 18.1% increase from the same period a year earlier. Transfer traffic on European routes rose 63.2% to about 210,000 passengers, highlighting the shift in connecting traffic toward the South Korean hub. The airport also benefited from stronger tourism demand. Foreign travellers accounted for a record 44.4% of Incheon’s total passenger traffic in the second quarter, with growing visitor flows from markets including China and Japan contributing to the increase. It currently serves 101 airlines and 183 cities in 53 countries when passenger and cargo operations are included, while passenger services connect Incheon with 158 international destinations. That compares with 139 international destinations served by Hong Kong, 92 by Shanghai Pudong and 86 by Tokyo Narita, according to the latest reports. The airport opened in 2001 and completed its latest major expansion in 2024. Its growing international network has allowed it to absorb additional connecting traffic while maintaining its position as a major Northeast Asian hub. Incheon International Airport Corporation Acting President Kim Beom-ho credited government support, the public and airport employees for the achievement. Caracas, Venezuela: Venezuelan authorities declared a nationwide state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within seconds of each other on June 24, triggering widespread destruction across Caracas and several surrounding regions, forcing the closure of the nation's main international airport and launching a large-scale search-and-rescue operation. He did not provide further details on the scale of the attack or potential damage but said emergency services had been dispatched to locations where drone debris fell. Russia's aviation watchdog, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted operations at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports as a safety precaution during the attack. The agency later announced that flight operations had resumed after authorities determined conditions were safe. Officials did not immediately disclose how long the restrictions remained in effect or whether flights were delayed or cancelled. Two men were aboard the aircraft when it went down near the mouth of the Pemaquid River, where it empties into Pemaquid Harbor. The crash was reported at around 1 p.m. local time, while the Federal Aviation Administration placed the crash time at approximately 1:40 p.m. The aircraft came down near Fort William Henry in the New Harbor area of Bristol, in Lincoln County, and was found upside down in approximately four feet of water close to shore. The aircraft was identified by the FAA as a Diamond DA20, a two-seat, single-engine aircraft. Aircraft-registration and aviation records identify the accident aircraft as N83RF, a 1996 Diamond DA20-A1 Katana, serial number 10139. The aircraft is a fixed-wing, single-engine airplane with two seats and a Rotax reciprocating engine. Current registration data identifies it as privately registered rather than operated by an airline. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the aircraft had departed Brunswick Executive Airport and was headed for Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head, roughly east of the crash site. Investigators initially believed the aircraft may have experienced a mechanical problem, but officials stressed that the actual cause had not been established. The sheriff's office said, “Initial information indicated the aircraft had left Brunswick Airport with a destination of the Knox County Airport and possibly experienced some type of mechanical failure.” The aircraft's final moments were followed by a rapid response from people on the shoreline. Sydney, Australia: The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) on Friday, August 21, 2026, confirmed an investigation into a fourth ground-safety incident at Sydney Airport within just over three weeks, involving two Qantas aircraft that received potentially conflicting taxi instructions on August 18. The investigation, AO-2026-091, concerns an Airbus A321, registration VH-OGA, operating Qantas Flight QF405 to Melbourne, and a Boeing 737-838, registration VH-VXL, operating Qantas Flight QF589 from the Gold Coast. The ATSB's latest announcement said investigators will interview the air traffic controllers and flight crews involved, examine recorded data and collect other relevant evidence. The agency has not yet determined a cause or contributing factor and said a final report will be released after the investigation is completed. The August 18 event occurred at about 8:09 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time. After landing on Runway 34R, Qantas Boeing 737-838, QF589 taxied west on Taxiway Lima with clearance to turn right at Taxiway Bravo. At the same time, Qantas Airbus A321-271NY, QF405 was taxiing south on Taxiway Charlie after being cleared to turn right onto Taxiway Lima. As the A321 approached the taxiway, its crew saw the Boeing 737 approaching from the left and stopped the aircraft, allowing the 737 to pass. The ATSB classified the occurrence as an incident, with the aviation occurrence categories listed as failure to pass traffic and information/procedural error. There were no injuries or aircraft damage. The ATSB said there was “no immediate risk of collision” because QF405 braked normally before stopping. It nevertheless opened an investigation to understand the potential conflicting instructions given to the two crews. Airservices Australia said it reported the potential traffic conflict to safety authorities on Tuesday, August 18, and Qantas said its aircraft had been cleared to proceed in accordance with air traffic control instructions and that it would support the investigation. The latest event is the fourth Sydney Airport safety incident being investigated by the ATSB since July 27. Importantly, the ATSB has not found a common cause or fault in any of the four incidents at this stage. All four investigations remain active or pending, meaning claims that staffing shortages, training problems or the new Sydney Basin airspace changes caused the incidents would go beyond what the safety bureau has established so far. Airservices Australia has said the incidents involve different circumstances and that each is being examined on its individual facts. The first incident occurred on July 27, 2026, and is recorded by the ATSB as AO-2026-086 “Breakdown of coordination involving Bombardier DHC-8, VH-QOC, and Boeing 737, VH-XZG, at Sydney Airport.” The occurrence took place at 8:14 a.m. AEST and involved QantasLink Flight QLK424D, travelling from Canberra to Sydney, and Qantas Flight QFA124, travelling from Queenstown, New Zealand, to Sydney. ATC cleared the Boeing 737 to cross Runway 34L from Runway 25 while the QantasLink DHC-8 was still in its landing roll on Runway 34L. Controllers detected the developing conflict and alerted both crews, after which the 737 stopped beyond the runway holding point. The ATSB has classified the investigation as an active short occurrence investigation, with completion anticipated in Q4 2026. The second incident occurred on August 9 at about 7:20 a.m. and involved Jetstar Flight JQ402, an Airbus A320-232 registered VH-VQJ, and a Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER, registered A7-BEU, which was being towed by a tug. The ATSB's investigation number is AO-2026-087, titled “Taxiing proximity event involving Airbus A320-232, VH-VQJ and Boeing 777, A7-BEU, at Sydney Airport.” As the Jetstar aircraft taxied before departure for the Gold Coast, its crew saw the Qatar 777 in close proximity on a crossing taxiway. Both aircraft stopped abruptly, and a Jetstar cabin crew member was reported to have suffered a minor injury. No aircraft damage was reported. The incident triggered immediate scrutiny of ground operations. The Australian Transport Minister, Catherine King, said a ground controller and the tug operator were stood down for mandatory drug and alcohol testing, describing it as standard policy while the ATSB investigation was under way. “As is policy, the ground controller and tug operator have been stood down for mandatory drug & alcohol testing,” the minister's statement said. No passengers were injured, while the Jetstar crew member was assessed by paramedics. Only about three hours later, on the morning of August 9, Sydney Airport recorded its third incident in the sequence. The ATSB investigation, AO-2026-090, is titled “Runway incursion and rejected take-off involving Boeing 737-8SA, VH-IJQ, and Boeing 737-838, VH-XZH.” The aircraft were Virgin Australia Flight VA555, scheduled from Sydney to Perth, and Qantas Flight QF728, scheduled from Sydney to Ayers Rock Airport. At around 10 a.m., ATC cleared the Virgin Australia 737, registered VH-IJQ, for a full-length departure from Runway 34L. As the Virgin crew applied thrust, they saw the Qantas 737, registered VH-XZH, begin crossing the runway from Taxiway Lima. The Qantas crew reported that it had also received clearance from ATC to cross. The Virgin crew reduced thrust and stopped on the runway, while ATC simultaneously cancelled the take-off clearance. After the Qantas aircraft cleared the runway, the Virgin 737 was cleared to depart. The ATSB classified the occurrence as an incident involving information/procedural error, loss of separation, rejected take-off and runway incursion. No injuries or aircraft damage were recorded. The four incidents have also intensified scrutiny of Sydney's air traffic-control workforce and the major airspace changes introduced ahead of the opening of Western Sydney International Airport. CASA implemented the new Sydney Basin airspace arrangements on July 9, creating new controlled airspace around Western Sydney International and changing the structure around Sydney Kingsford Smith, Bankstown and Camden airports. CASA said the changes were designed to integrate the airports while maintaining capacity, efficiency and aircraft separation. Reuters reported that the ATSB had received a June report from an air traffic controller warning that staff at Sydney Airport were not adequately prepared for complex airspace and procedural changes linked to the opening of Western Sydney International Airport. The report cited concerns over limited training time and the volume of new material. CASA later found that Airservices Australia had implemented appropriate training, procedures and operational support arrangements. The sequence has also prompted warnings from aviation safety specialists. Retired commercial pilot and former ATSB safety investigator Geoff Klouth said the repeated events should be addressed quickly. “We've been very fortunate that there haven't been collisions, but it doesn't mean it won't happen in the future,” he said, warning that the consequences of a future failure could be catastrophic. For now, however, the official position remains that there is no established common cause behind the four incidents. The ATSB is examining each occurrence separately while also looking for common contributing factors. The July 27 coordination breakdown, the August 9 Jetstar-Qatar taxiing event, the August 9 Virgin-Qantas runway incursion and rejected take-off, and the August 18 Qantas taxiing conflict are all still under investigation. The investigation, AO-2026-091, concerns an Airbus A321, registration VH-OGA, operating Qantas Flight QF405 to Melbourne, and a Boeing 737-838, registration VH-VXL, operating Qantas Flight QF589 from the Gold Coast. The ATSB's latest announcement said investigators will interview the air traffic controllers and flight crews involved, examine recorded data and collect other relevant evidence. As the Virgin crew applied thrust, they saw the Qantas 737, registered VH-XZH, begin crossing the runway from Taxiway Lima. The Qantas crew reported that it had also received clearance from ATC to cross. The Virgin crew reduced thrust and stopped on the runway, while ATC simultaneously cancelled the take-off clearance. After the Qantas aircraft cleared the runway, the Virgin 737 was cleared to depart. The ATSB classified the occurrence as an incident involving information/procedural error, loss of separation, rejected take-off and runway incursion. No injuries or aircraft damage were recorded. The four incidents have also intensified scrutiny of Sydney's air traffic-control workforce and the major airspace changes introduced ahead of the opening of Western Sydney International Airport.
