Zadar, Croatia: Two people were killed after a Diamond HK36TC-100 Super Dimona motor glider crashed in Croatia’s Velebit mountains while flying from the Czech Republic to Zadar, with rescuers locating the wreckage only after a nearly six-hour search through extremely difficult terrain and severe weather. The crash occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, in the southern Velebit range near Struge inside Paklenica National Park, about 17 nautical miles northeast of Zadar. Croatia’s Air Traffic Control lost contact with the German-registered aircraft, D-KWZE, at around 4:14 p.m. local time. The aircraft had departed Olomouc Airport (LKOL) in the Czech Republic and was bound for Zadar Airport (LDZD), according to Croatia’s Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency. German media reported that they were members of the Hamburg-based Airbus HFB-Fluggemeinschaft. Croatian reports identified the occupants as a man and a woman, both believed to have been around 80 years old, although their individual identities have not been publicly released in the official accident report reviewed for this report. The aircraft was travelling toward Zadar when its signal disappeared approximately 17 nautical miles northeast of the city. Croatia’s Civil Protection Directorate immediately activated a search-and-rescue operation after being notified by Croatia Control. Civil Protection personnel from Zadar and Gospić, police officers, firefighters and HGSS mountain rescuers were sent toward the last known position. The search quickly became difficult because the last known position was in an isolated and rugged section of southern Velebit, around the Veliki Rujno and Struge areas of Paklenica National Park. The weather further complicated the operation. Heavy rain, strong winds and dense fog affected the area, with rescuers reporting visibility of only a few metres in places and approximately two metres at the eventual crash site. The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service deployed 40 members from seven stations — Zadar, Gospić, Zagreb, Osijek, Zlatar Bistrica, Split and Novska. Thirty-five rescuers were deployed in the field, while the remaining personnel provided command, communications and logistical support from the operational base established at the HGSS station in Starigrad-Paklenica. Two members of Paklenica National Park also assisted in the operation. State Civil Protection intervention units from Split and Rijeka were also activated, bringing a command vehicle, drones and equipment for night searches. However, deteriorating weather prevented aerial searching with drones and also prevented the deployment of helicopters from Croatia’s Interior Ministry and Defence Ministry during the initial search. Ground teams therefore had to work through the difficult terrain. Petar Prpić of HGSS described the conditions during the search, saying, “Almost 35 people were sent to the field,” while explaining that a separate command base had been established in Starigrad-Paklenica. He said teams approached the search area from both the Gospić and Zadar/Starigrad sides, with two National Park employees also assisting. HGSS teams eventually narrowed the search area by analysing available aircraft-movement data. That analysis produced a more precise possible crash location around Struge and Veliki Rujno, significantly reducing the area that had to be searched on foot. At approximately 10 p.m., rescuers reached the aircraft in the Sturge area and found the wreckage along with two people who showed no signs of life. HGSS later stated that its rescuers had reached the location and found “the remains of the ultralight aircraft” and two bodies inside. The search operation was subsequently concluded. The Lika-Senj Police Department secured the crash site overnight. Police said an on-site investigation would be carried out to establish the circumstances and facts of the accident. In its official statement, the police reported that “two persons were found dead” after the wreckage was located and said officers would secure the site pending the investigation. The following day, accident investigators, police, the prosecutor’s office and HGSS personnel were involved in the examination of the crash site and recovery operation. A later report said 16 HGSS rescuers from eight stations assisted authorities with the on-site investigation and removal of the victims from the aircraft. Because of the inaccessible terrain, personnel involved in the investigation were transported from the Starigrad-Paklenica area by a Croatian Interior Ministry helicopter once the weather and operational circumstances allowed the subsequent operation. Croatia’s Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency has now opened a formal safety investigation into the crash. The agency was notified by the Interior Ministry’s operational communications centre and Croatia Control and sent its aircraft-accident investigators to the crash site. The investigation is being conducted under EU Regulation 996/2010, and the agency said the results will eventually be made public in a final report. At this stage, authorities have not established why or exactly how the aircraft crashed. There has been no official finding that the weather, a mechanical failure, pilot error or the mountainous terrain caused the accident. Reports noting heavy rain, strong winds, dense fog and extremely low visibility describe the conditions faced by rescuers, but those conditions should not be treated as the confirmed cause of the crash until the safety investigation establishes the sequence of events. The investigation will now focus on reconstructing the Super Dimona’s final flight path and determining what happened between the last recorded aircraft position and the crash. Investigators will examine the wreckage, available flight and radar data, weather conditions, aircraft records and other relevant evidence before determining the cause and contributing factors. The final findings are expected to be published by Croatia’s accident investigation agency once the safety investigation is completed.

Maine, United States: A Diamond DA20-A1 Katana single-engine aircraft crashed into the water near Fort William Henry in Bristol, Maine, on Thursday, August 20, killing the pilot and injuring the passenger. Two men were aboard the aircraft when it went down near the mouth of the Pemaquid River, where it empties into Pemaquid Harbor. The crash was reported at around 1 p.m. local time, while the Federal Aviation Administration placed the crash time at approximately 1:40 p.m. The aircraft came down near Fort William Henry in the New Harbor area of Bristol, in Lincoln County, and was found upside down in approximately four feet of water close to shore. The aircraft was identified by the FAA as a Diamond DA20, a two-seat, single-engine aircraft. Aircraft-registration and aviation records identify the accident aircraft as N83RF, a 1996 Diamond DA20-A1 Katana, serial number 10139. The aircraft is a fixed-wing, single-engine airplane with two seats and a Rotax reciprocating engine. Current registration data identifies it as privately registered rather than operated by an airline. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the aircraft had departed Brunswick Executive Airport and was headed for Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head, roughly east of the crash site. Investigators initially believed the aircraft may have experienced a mechanical problem, but officials stressed that the actual cause had not been established. The sheriff's office said, “Initial information indicated the aircraft had left Brunswick Airport with a destination of the Knox County Airport and possibly experienced some type of mechanical failure.” The aircraft's final moments were followed by a rapid response from people on the shoreline. Nearby residents and a building crew who witnessed the crash rushed into the water to help. The pilot was pulled from the aircraft but died at the scene, while the passenger managed to escape from the wreckage on his own. The passenger was taken to MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital in Damariscotta, at the Miles campus, with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said he was expected to survive. The identities of both occupants had not been released in the latest reports. The emergency response involved the Bristol Fire and Rescue Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service. The Maine Marine Patrol also assisted at the crash site. Responders placed containment equipment around the aircraft, which was lying inverted in the shallow harbor water. A local marine barge was subsequently used to remove the Diamond DA20 from the water. The aircraft was taken to a secure location where it could be examined as part of the federal investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. FAA public affairs specialist Rick Breitenfeldt said the “FAA, as well as the National Transportation Safety Board, will investigate the cause of the crash.” No official cause had been determined as of the latest available reports. The initial reference to a possible mechanical failure remains only an investigative lead and should not be presented as the confirmed cause. The NTSB is expected to examine the aircraft, its maintenance history, flight data and other operational factors before determining what led to the crash.

Diamond DA20 Crashes Into Water Near Bristol; Pilot Killed, Passenger Injured

Alaska, United States: A twin-engine Cessna 441 charter aircraft carrying eight people crashed near the remote Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in western Alaska on Thursday, August 20, while approaching Cape Newenham. The aircraft, operated by Security Aviation, had departed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and was headed to Cape Newenham when it went down west of Cape Newenham LRRS Airport at about 12:15 p.m. local time. NTSB Alaska region chief Clint Johnson confirmed that two pilots and six passengers were aboard, but officials had not released their condition or confirmed any fatalities or survivors at the time of reporting. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center launched a search-and-rescue mission after receiving a report of an “aircraft incident” near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site. Johnson, the NTSB’s Alaska region chief, provided the passenger and crew count to The Associated Press and said he did not immediately have details on the status of those aboard. AP reported that Johnson said the aircraft was believed to have crashed early Thursday afternoon while on approach to Cape Newenham. “The information received so far is preliminary,” Johnson said. According to the FAA, the aircraft crashed west of Cape Newenham LRRS Airport at 12:15 p.m. local time. The Cessna 441 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft. Security Aviation, an Anchorage-based charter operator, lists the Cessna 441 Conquest II among its fleet and says the aircraft is suited for operations across Alaska, including airports with gravel runways and challenging weather and airport environments. The aircraft was believed to have gone down during its approach to Cape Newenham rather than after landing. However, authorities have not disclosed what caused the aircraft to crash, whether the crew issued an emergency call, whether there was a mechanical problem, or what the weather conditions were at the time of the accident. None of those factors has been identified by investigators as a cause. The crash occurred near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, a remote facility in western Alaska. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center said it began a search-and-rescue operation after receiving a report of an “aircraft incident” in the area. Authorities had not publicly confirmed whether rescuers had reached all eight occupants, whether anyone had survived, or whether there were fatalities. NTSB officials also had not released the identities of the pilots or passengers. The lack of information was attributed in part to the remote location of the crash site and the early stage of the response. The NTSB is leading the investigation, with the FAA assisting. Cessna 441 Charter Plane Crashes In Alaska, Killing All Eight People On Board

Carlisle, United States: A Cessna 150 collided with a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter at Carlisle Regional Airport in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday evening, August 19, killing the Cessna pilot and injuring two state police troopers aboard the helicopter. The collision occurred near a runway at the airport, about 110 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The FAA identified the aircraft involved as a Cessna 150 and a Bell 407. The Cessna pilot, believed to have been the aircraft's only occupant, died in the crash. Authorities had not released the pilot's identity pending notification of next of kin. The Bell 407 was operated by the Pennsylvania State Police and was carrying two members of the department's aviation unit, Cpl. Bryce Corman and Tpr. Jason Mills. The helicopter was conducting a routine training exercise at Carlisle after operating from its Harrisburg base. According to Acting Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Lt. Col. George Bivens, the helicopter was positioned several feet above a grassy area next to a runway when the Cessna approached from behind. The aircraft came down along the runway before veering sharply to the right at the last moment and striking the helicopter from the rear. “As that Cessna came down along that runway for an unknown reason, it veered hard to the right. At the last moment, it struck the helicopter from the rear,” Bivens said. The Cessna struck the helicopter's rear section, involving the tail rotor and then the main rotor, sending both aircraft into a violent crash. The Cessna broke into multiple pieces, while the Bell 407 lost its rotor blades and tail boom before rolling over and coming to rest on its side, partially on its roof. The two troopers were initially trapped inside the helicopter. Corman was able to push out a window and help Mills escape through the opening. Mills was believed to have suffered more serious injuries and significant bleeding, according to Bivens. Both troopers were taken to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Ashley Ludwig, the hospital's trauma medical director, said they arrived as Level 1 trauma patients but had only minor injuries and were in stable condition. One was expected to be discharged Wednesday night, while the other was admitted for further observation. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said the helicopter crew was conducting routine training when the collision occurred. He said the helicopter pilots would not have been able to see the Cessna approaching from behind. “The pilots would not have been able to even see that airplane approaching them,” Paris said. Governor Josh Shapiro visited the medical center and praised the emergency response and medical teams involved in treating the injured troopers. “Tonight could have been much worse,” Shapiro said, adding that the response was “an example of Pennsylvania at its finest.” Emergency personnel responded to the airport following the crash, and the coroner was called to the scene. Local residents Patrick Brown and Lloyd Slusser also reportedly crossed a fence and ran toward the wreckage to assist after witnessing the crash. The Cessna was reportedly from the local area, but authorities have not disclosed its departure point, destination or the purpose of its flight. The aircraft's pilot was believed to be its sole occupant. The exact cause of the collision remains undetermined. Officials said the Cessna's sudden right turn was made for an unknown reason, and investigators will examine why the aircraft veered from its approach path, the helicopter's position, airport operations and communications. Carlisle Regional Airport does not have an air traffic control tower. Pilots operating there use a common traffic radio frequency, and investigators are expected to examine those communications as part of the inquiry. State police also secured photographs and video that could assist investigators in reconstructing the collision. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation, with Pennsylvania State Police assisting. The NTSB said the wreckage would be documented and moved to a secure facility for further examination. Although the FAA and NTSB described the incident as a midair collision, Pennsylvania State Police later said the helicopter was on the ground at the time of the impact. Officials have not yet established whether the Cessna was airborne at the exact moment of contact. The distinction, along with the reason for the Cessna's sudden deviation, remains part of the investigation. No final cause has been determined, and authorities have not attributed the crash to pilot error, mechanical failure, communications issues or any other specific factor.

Mogadishu, Somalia: Somali Airlines is targeting a return to scheduled passenger operations around mid-September 2026, more than 35 years after the national carrier stopped flying amid Somalia’s civil war, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority. Ahmed Ma’allin, director of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, said the relaunch preparations had reached their final stage. “Somali Airlines is in its final stages, the first flight will be around mid September,” he said. The latest target would mark the airline’s first scheduled commercial operations since 1991, when its services were halted following the collapse of Somalia’s central government and the outbreak of civil war. Somali Airlines was established in 1964 and previously operated a network linking Somalia with destinations in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The September target is the latest in a series of attempts to restore the state-owned carrier. In July 2025, the Somali government announced an agreement involving two Airbus A320 aircraft as the initial fleet for the revived airline. At the time, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Farah Nuuh said the aircraft were expected to enter service within two months. The minister said during the July 2025 announcement in Mogadishu that the government had acquired two A320s and planned to expand the fleet. “For now, we shall start with these two, then two or three more will follow,” he said. The government subsequently set additional timelines for the airline’s return, including a target to resume operations before the end of 2025. That deadline passed without the carrier beginning scheduled commercial services, making the September 2026 target another attempt to turn the long-running revival plan into an operating airline. The initial fleet is expected to comprise two Airbus A320 aircraft secured under the 2025 agreement. The government has indicated that the two aircraft are only the first phase of a wider fleet-building programme, with additional aircraft expected as the airline expands. However, aircraft acquisition alone does not complete the restart process. The airline must satisfy safety and regulatory requirements, obtain the necessary operating approvals and ensure that pilots, engineers, cabin crew and other personnel are appropriately qualified. Maintenance arrangements, insurance, flight planning, airport handling and other operational systems must also be in place before regular commercial services can begin. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority’s current aeronautical information system shows that Somalia has continued developing its regulatory and operational aviation framework. Zadar, Croatia: Two people were killed after a Diamond HK36TC-100 Super Dimona motor glider crashed in Croatia’s Velebit mountains while flying from the Czech Republic to Zadar, with rescuers locating the wreckage only after a nearly six-hour search through extremely difficult terrain and severe weather. The crash occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, in the southern Velebit range near Struge inside Paklenica National Park, about 17 nautical miles northeast of Zadar. Croatia’s Air Traffic Control lost contact with the German-registered aircraft, D-KWZE, at around 4:14 p.m. local time. Montreal, Canada: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has sounded a strong warning on global air safety, highlighting rising accident rates as flight activity reaches record levels. In its latest State of Global Aviation Safety report released this month, the UN aviation agency revealed that 2024 saw 95 accidents involving scheduled commercial flights, compared with 66 the previous year. Of these, 10 were fatal, resulting in 296 deaths, an alarming jump from 72 in 2023. The global accident rate also rose to 2.56 per million departures, up from 1.87 the previous year. While ICAO stressed that aviation remains the safest form of travel, the organization called for urgent international action to address mounting risks as passenger demand continues to grow worldwide. ICAO’s data show that the most significant accident categories included controlled flight into terrain, loss of control in flight, mid-air collisions, and runway incursions. These accounted for 25 percent of total fatalities and 40 percent of fatal accidents in 2024. Turbulence has also emerged as a key concern, responsible for nearly three-quarters of serious injuries recorded last year. The Asia-Pacific and Europe/North Atlantic regions each reported three fatal accidents, while a single catastrophic crash in South America caused 62 deaths. Overall, Asia-Pacific recorded the highest number of fatalities, followed by South America, then Europe and the North Atlantic. Alongside accident data, ICAO flagged growing risks from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) disruptions, such as jamming and spoofing, which threaten the reliability of modern navigation. The organization is updating guidance and working with member states to protect GNSS integrity, while also strengthening runway safety initiatives, turbulence monitoring, and wildlife strike reporting. ICAO is further developing frameworks for civil-military cooperation to manage risks linked to conflict zones and restricted airspace, and it is preparing safety systems for the integration of unmanned aircraft and advanced air mobility vehicles into shared skies. ICAO leaders underscored that the rise in accidents is a wake-up call for regulators, airlines, and governments worldwide. Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar noted that the long-term safety trend remains positive but emphasized that “aviation remains the safest form of transport” only if proactive measures are sustained.

Incheon, South Korea: South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has become the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic for the first time, handling about 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary Airports Council International data reported on August 13. Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, overtaking Dubai’s previous No. 1 position. The latest result represents a major change in the ranking. ACI’s 2025 international passenger ranking placed Dubai first, Heathrow second and Incheon third. The organisation’s July 2026 airport ranking resource likewise listed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers based on the latest completed annual dataset. The new Incheon result therefore represents a preliminary H1 2026 shift rather than a completed annual ranking. The ranking shift was partly linked to major changes in global air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict. The disruption weakened the role of Middle Eastern transfer hubs, particularly Dubai, prompting some passengers travelling between Europe and Asia to reroute through Incheon. Dubai’s international passenger traffic fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March before recovering to 4.7 million by June. Incheon recorded 4.24 million transfer passengers during the first six months, an 18.1% increase from the same period a year earlier. Transfer traffic on European routes rose 63.2% to about 210,000 passengers, highlighting the shift in connecting traffic toward the South Korean hub. The airport also benefited from stronger tourism demand. Foreign travellers accounted for a record 44.4% of Incheon’s total passenger traffic in the second quarter, with growing visitor flows from markets including China and Japan contributing to the increase. Infrastructure and connectivity have also strengthened Incheon’s position. The airport’s expansion programme has raised its annual passenger-handling capacity to 106 million. It currently serves 101 airlines and 183 cities in 53 countries when passenger and cargo operations are included, while passenger services connect Incheon with 158 international destinations. That compares with 139 international destinations served by Hong Kong, 92 by Shanghai Pudong and 86 by Tokyo Narita, according to the latest reports. The airport opened in 2001 and completed its latest major expansion in 2024. Its growing international network has allowed it to absorb additional connecting traffic while maintaining its position as a major Northeast Asian hub. Incheon International Airport Corporation Acting President Kim Beom-ho credited government support, the public and airport employees for the achievement. He said the airport would continue pursuing service innovation and improving connectivity with regional airports. Kim said: “We’re grateful for the government’s support, the public’s encouragement” and the efforts of airport personnel.
