Layton, United States: Two people were hospitalized after a small aircraft crash-landed and overturned on a highway in Layton, Utah, late Thursday night, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and a federal investigation into the cause of the accident. In its official statement, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar said, "Emergency personnel responded this morning to an aircraft mishap on the flightline of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar at approximately 10:00 am local time today, involving an F-35B assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing." The service later added, "The pilot ejected, was transported to a local medical facility in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of non life threatening injuries." The Marine Corps classified the event as a Class A mishap, the military's most serious accident category. A Class A mishap is designated when an aircraft is destroyed, damage exceeds USD 2 million or a fatality occurs. In this case, the classification reflects the destruction of the aircraft even though the pilot survived. Authorities have not determined or announced the cause of the crash. Three Killed After Piper PA-22 Crashes During Landing Attempt At Alaska Airstrip

San Juan Province, Argentina: All seven people aboard a Bell 412 helicopter were killed after the aircraft crashed in Argentina's San Juan Province on July 29 while en route to support wildfire suppression operations in the neighboring province of La Rioja, authorities confirmed. The helicopter, operated under contract to Argentina's Federal Emergency Agency (AFE), went down during the morning near Ischigualasto Provincial Park, around 1,100 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires. Officials said the aircraft had been conducting training activities in San Juan before departing to assist firefighters battling a forest fire in La Rioja. According to the AFE, the helicopter's last recorded communication was received at 10:26 a.m. local time. After contact was lost, another aircraft operating in the area located the crash site and alerted authorities, triggering the emergency response. There were seven people on board, and all were killed. No survivors were reported, and authorities did not report any injuries on the ground. Those killed included Carlos Heredia, Director of Civil Protection in San Juan; Germán Videla, Deputy Chief of the San Juan Provincial Police; Rubén Castro and Jorge Carbajal, both senior officers with the provincial Fire Department; pilot Matías Valenzuela; and AFE firefighters Andrés Bosch and Rodrigo Aimetta, who were deployed from other jurisdictions. San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego confirmed the fatalities in a statement posted on social media, "It is with deep sorrow that we received the news of the helicopter accident that occurred in our province, in which seven people sadly lost their lives." The governor also extended condolences to the victims' families."I want to express my deepest condolences to the families of all the victims at this time of immense grief. We stand with each and every one of their loved ones." In an official statement, the Federal Emergency Agency said the Bell 412 had been assigned to support emergency operations after completing training activities in San Juan. "The causes of the accident are under investigation." AFE added that it remains in contact with the relevant authorities and will release additional official information as it becomes available. Following the tragedy, Governor Orrego declared three days of official mourning across San Juan Province. State celebrations were suspended, and flags at government buildings were ordered to be flown at half-mast in memory of the victims. Seven Killed After Bell 412 Helicopter Crashes En Route To Argentina Wildfire Mission

Bangor, United States: Swiss International Air Lines has clarified that smoke detected onboard flight LX16 from Zurich to New York on July 27 was caused by a damaged earphone charging case trapped inside a Business Class seat. The incident occurred while the Airbus-operated flight was en route from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York. During the flight, smoke was reported onboard, prompting the crew to follow emergency procedures and divert the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport, Bangor International Airport (BGR) in Maine. Initial reports indicated that smoke had been detected in the forward section of the aircraft, with preliminary information suggesting a possible cockpit-related issue. However, after a technical investigation, SWISS determined that the source was an earphone charging case containing a lithium-ion battery. According to the airline, the charging case had slipped into a gap near a seat in the front Business Class cabin, where it became trapped and was damaged. The damage caused the device to emit smoke, creating a potential fire risk inside the cabin. SWISS highlighted that many personal electronic devices carried by passengers use lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat when damaged, malfunction, or become trapped, potentially leading to smoke or fire. New Delhi, India: The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) has strongly rejected recent remarks by IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia attributing India's pilot shortage to revised flight duty and fatigue management regulations, asserting instead that deeper structural issues within the aviation industry are constraining the country's pilot workforce. In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, 2026, ALPA India said the debate surrounding pilot availability should focus on long-standing industry practices rather than the implementation of revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). The pilots' body maintained that India's aviation sector has sufficient interest among aspiring pilots but alleged that barriers within the training and employment ecosystem are restricting the effective supply of qualified flight crew. According to reports by PTI, ALPA India disputed suggestions that enhanced fatigue regulations are responsible for the industry's staffing challenges. Instead, the association argued that three structural issues continue to affect pilot availability: the high cost of cadet training and aircraft type ratings, alleged anti-competitive hiring practices among airlines, and wage-related employment practices that limit pilot mobility. The association urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to expedite investigations into these issues, stating that addressing structural barriers would provide a more sustainable solution to pilot shortages than revisiting safety-focused flight duty regulations. The remarks came after Rahul Bhatia co-founder of IndiGo and serves as the Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., the parent company of IndiGo expressed concerns over the implementation of revised DGCA Flight Duty Time Limitations, stating that the changes could intensify pilot shortages and increase operational challenges for airlines. His comments reignited discussion across the aviation sector regarding the balance between operational efficiency and flight safety. Bhatia told PTI, "I think Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) needs a review, and I think there's enough conversation going on with the government. All we want to do is appeal to the government that we must follow the global best practices". Responding directly to Rahul Bhatia's recent comments, ALPA India argued that weakening or delaying fatigue management reforms would not resolve the industry's workforce challenges. Instead, it said policy attention should remain focused on ensuring fair market practices while maintaining internationally accepted flight safety standards designed to reduce pilot fatigue. India's revised FDTL regulations were introduced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) following recommendations aimed at strengthening pilot fatigue management. The rules seek to improve crew rest requirements, regulate night operations and reduce fatigue-related safety risks. While several airlines have expressed operational concerns regarding implementation, pilot associations have consistently maintained that the regulations are essential for maintaining flight safety. ALPA India specifically called for faster progress in investigations into cadet programme pricing and inter-airline hiring practices. The association argued that the financial burden associated with airline cadet programmes and mandatory type-rating training has significantly increased the cost of entering the profession, making commercial pilot careers inaccessible for many aspiring candidates. The pilots' body also alleged that anti-competitive employment practices within the industry have affected labour mobility. It claimed that certain hiring practices discourage experienced pilots from moving between airlines, thereby limiting competition in the labour market and suppressing salary growth. ALPA India said these issues require regulatory scrutiny by the Competition Commission of India. The association further maintained that wage suppression has become another contributing factor behind the industry's pilot supply concerns. According to ALPA India, compensation structures and employment conditions at certain carriers discourage both retention and recruitment despite growing demand for pilots as Indian airlines continue expanding their fleets. ALPA India claimed that airline-backed cadet programmes require aspiring pilots to spend between ₹60 lakh and ₹1.25 crore on training, significantly higher than international type-rating programmes that typically cost around ₹20 lakh. The association further alleged that many cadets are bound by long-term employment agreements despite having no assurance of securing a job. ALPA India reiterated that pilot shortages cannot be attributed solely to duty-time regulations and emphasized that broader structural reforms are necessary. The association said reducing financial barriers for cadet pilots, ensuring competitive hiring practices and addressing employment-related concerns would help strengthen the long-term supply of qualified flight crew in India's rapidly expanding aviation market. Neither the Ministry of Civil Aviation nor the Competition Commission of India had publicly responded to ALPA India's latest appeal at the time of publication. Similarly, no fresh official statement from IndiGo responding specifically to ALPA India's latest remarks had been issued.

ALPA Rejects IndiGo’s FDTL Remarks, Cites Structural Issues Behind Pilot Shortage

New Delhi, India: The investigation into the crash of Air India flight AI-171 has entered its final stages, with the government telling Parliament that an advanced examination of the aircraft’s fuel control switch and its locking mechanism found no abnormality. However, the inspection of the complete thrust control module remains underway at the original equipment manufacturer's facility in Seattle. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol provided the update during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in response to questions in the Rajya Sabha. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's response, the tests were ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as part of continuing airworthiness checks after the Boeing 787 aircraft type was grounded in February this year. "A detailed examination of the fuel control switch, including the structural integrity of its locking detents, found no abnormality," Mohol said. The government further stated: "Inspection of the complete Thrust Control Module at the OEM's facility is underway." The finding is significant because the movement of the two engine fuel control switches has been a central focus of the investigation into the June 12, 2025 crash, which happened shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The aircraft came down in the Meghani Nagar area, killing 260 people, including 241 of the 242 people aboard the aircraft and 19 people on the ground. One passenger survived the crash. The preliminary investigation found that both switches moved from the RUN position to CUT OFF shortly after takeoff, resulting in the loss of thrust from both engines. The preliminary report, however, did not establish why the switches moved or assign responsibility for the movement. The latest examination has so far found no abnormality in the locking mechanism of the fuel control switch. However, the government has not said that the investigation has established the cause of the switches moving to the CUTOFF position. The complete thrust control module is still being examined, and the outcome of that inspection remains awaited. The government also rejected suggestions that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has delayed the final report into the crash. Mohol said investigations into major air accidents do not follow a fixed timeline and that the AI-171 inquiry is progressing in accordance with established investigation procedures. "All probable causes and contributing factors leading to the accident are being investigated," the minister said. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the final investigation report will contain the findings of the probe and will be made public and uploaded on the AAIB's website once the investigation is completed. The preliminary report also noted that the aircraft had been certified as airworthy before the flight and that its maintenance records did not show a reported defect involving the fuel control switches. It also recorded that the aircraft's throttle control module had previously been replaced, although the replacements were unrelated to reported fuel-switch defects. The investigation subsequently drew international attention because the fuel control switches are part of the Boeing 787's thrust control system and are designed with locking mechanisms intended to prevent unintended movement. The latest government statement indicates that the structural integrity of the locking detents has now been examined and that no abnormality was identified in that specific component. New Delhi, India: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of ₹1 lakh (US$1,160) on SpiceJet Limited for using deceptive digital design practices, commonly known as dark patterns, on its flight booking platform. The authority concluded that the airline's booking interface violated consumer protection laws by enrolling users into services and obtaining marketing consent without their explicit approval. The order was issued by the CCPA, headed by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra, following an examination of the airline's online booking process. According to the authority, SpiceJet's practices breached provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Rule 4(9) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, and the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023. The CCPA found that consumers booking flights on SpiceJet's platform were automatically enrolled into the SpiceClub Loyalty Programme through a pre-ticked checkbox, without actively opting into the service. It also observed that customers were treated as having agreed to receive promotional communications because the default option for marketing messages had already been selected, requiring no affirmative action from users. According to the authority, even after it issued a notice to the airline, SpiceJet modified the booking interface by replacing the original mechanism with another pre-ticked checkbox for receiving future promotional messages through text messages, WhatsApp and email. During the proceedings, SpiceJet stated that the issue had occurred because of a technical error. The airline was subsequently directed to provide an undertaking confirming that the required corrective measures had been implemented and would remain in place permanently. In its order, the CCPA identified multiple categories of prohibited dark patterns on the airline's booking platform. It said the automatic enrolment into the SpiceClub Loyalty Programme through a pre-selected checkbox amounted to "Forced Action." It further held that presenting the company's preferred option as the default selection constituted "Interface Interference", as it influenced consumer decision-making. The authority also found that the use of confusing and negatively worded consent language had the potential to mislead users, classifying it as a "Trick Question." The authority stated that "such practices impair consumer autonomy, undermine informed decision-making and are inconsistent with the principles of fair and transparent consumer engagement." The CCPA further concluded that SpiceJet's conduct amounted to unfair trade practices, unfair contracts and misleading representations under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. It also ruled that the airline had violated Rule 4(9) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, which requires consumer consent to be obtained only through explicit and affirmative action, as well as the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023. Reiterating the legal standard for obtaining consumer consent, the order states that "consumer consent must always be explicit, informed and freely given. Consent obtained through pre-ticked checkboxes, default settings or deceptive interface design is not valid and is contrary to consumer welfare and the provisions of law." The authority also reaffirmed its regulatory approach towards digital commerce, stating that "CCPA remains committed to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that digital platforms conduct business in a fair, transparent and consumer-centric manner." The action against SpiceJet forms part of the CCPA's ongoing efforts to curb deceptive online practices following the introduction of the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023, which prohibit interface designs that manipulate or mislead consumers into making unintended choices. SpiceJet maintained during the proceedings that the issue resulted from a technical error. However, the CCPA proceeded with the penalty and directed the airline to ensure that the corrective measures are implemented on a permanent basis.

London, United Kingdom: International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and LEVEL, has revised its 2026 capacity outlook to flat, abandoning its earlier plan to grow capacity by around 3% this year after the conflict in the Middle East disrupted operations, pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher and altered global travel patterns. The revised guidance was announced alongside the group's first-half 2026 financial results, which showed resilient passenger demand despite mounting geopolitical and cost pressures. The airline group now expects available seat kilometres (ASKs) in 2026 to remain unchanged from 2025, a significant downgrade from the growth forecast it had maintained at the end of the first quarter. According to the company, the revision reflects lower-than-planned flying caused by the Middle East conflict, aircraft availability constraints linked to engine issues, and a strategy aimed at protecting profitability amid higher operating costs. Despite the weaker capacity outlook, IAG Chief Executive Officer Luis Gallego said the group remained confident about long-term demand and the resilience of its business model. "With these results IAG has again demonstrated that its excellent fundamentals are supporting continued value creation for our shareholders, despite the impact of the crisis in the Middle East and wider geopolitical events. "We are well-positioned to deal with these near-term headwinds with a diverse portfolio of world-class brands in large and attractive markets; industry-leading margins; significant free cash flow and a strong balance sheet; and attractive shareholder returns. "Our long-term transformation programme has created the resilience that we are now benefiting from - products and services that our customers value, efficient and punctual operations and a low cost base." Gallego added that the company remained confident in its strategy, stating, "We remain confident in our business model and strategy that has made us one of the best-performing airline groups in the world." The company also reaffirmed that travel demand across its network continues to remain strong despite recent geopolitical volatility. IAG said bookings for the second half of 2026 remained encouraging, with approximately 57% of second-half capacity already booked and booked revenue broadly in line with the same period last year. While long-haul markets are expected to remain healthy, management warned that European short-haul markets are becoming increasingly competitive as airlines redeploy aircraft from disrupted Middle East routes into other regions. Financially, IAG reported first-half revenue of €16.064 billion, up 1% year-on-year, driven by continued strong passenger demand across its portfolio of airlines. Operating profit before exceptional items stood at €1.757 billion, compared with €1.878 billion a year earlier, while operating margin before exceptional items declined from 11.8% to 10.9%. Reported operating profit fell 14.4% to €1.608 billion, and profit after tax declined 20.6% to €1.033 billion, reflecting higher fuel costs, restructuring expenses and adverse foreign exchange impacts. The group's fuel bill emerged as one of the biggest challenges during the first half of the year. Fuel costs and emissions charges increased by 12.3% to €3.956 billion, largely because commodity fuel prices climbed sharply following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Although IAG's hedging strategy helped offset part of the increase, management expects total fuel costs for 2026 to range between €8.3 billion and €8.6 billion, depending on market prices during the remainder of the year. According to the company, around 60% of the higher fuel costs are expected to be recovered through a combination of higher fares and cost-saving initiatives, while the remaining increase will continue to weigh on profitability. Management said its fuel hedging policy remains unchanged and continues to provide protection against commodity price volatility. The Middle East conflict significantly disrupted IAG's operations, forcing the suspension of flights to Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, Tel Aviv and Jeddah. In response, British Airways redeployed aircraft to destinations including Bangkok, Bengaluru, Delhi, Malé, Nairobi and Singapore, while Iberia shifted capacity to Japan, Latin America, North America and the Spanish Islands. Despite the disruption, demand remained resilient across the group's network. British Airways continued to benefit from strong premium and corporate travel on North Atlantic routes, while Iberia expanded its long-haul network with Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Latin America also remained a growth market, although IAG said competition in European short-haul markets intensified as airlines redeployed aircraft from the Middle East, limiting fare increases to offset higher fuel costs. The group said it would continue reviewing winter capacity to protect profitability. IAG also continued its transformation programme, with British Airways rolling out its new digital booking platform and mobile app, while Iberia and Vueling advanced fleet and network modernisation initiatives. The group is also expanding Starlink high-speed connectivity across its long-haul fleet. Looking ahead, IAG expects long-haul demand to remain strong while short-haul markets remain highly competitive. The group reaffirmed its target of delivering a 12% to 15% operating margin, generating significant free cash flow and maintaining a strong balance sheet despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and elevated fuel costs.

Montreal, Canada: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has sounded a strong warning on global air safety, highlighting rising accident rates as flight activity reaches record levels. In its latest State of Global Aviation Safety report released this month, the UN aviation agency revealed that 2024 saw 95 accidents involving scheduled commercial flights, compared with 66 the previous year. Of these, 10 were fatal, resulting in 296 deaths, an alarming jump from 72 in 2023. The global accident rate also rose to 2.56 per million departures, up from 1.87 the previous year. While ICAO stressed that aviation remains the safest form of travel, the organization called for urgent international action to address mounting risks as passenger demand continues to grow worldwide. ICAO’s data show that the most significant accident categories included controlled flight into terrain, loss of control in flight, mid-air collisions, and runway incursions. These accounted for 25 percent of total fatalities and 40 percent of fatal accidents in 2024. Turbulence has also emerged as a key concern, responsible for nearly three-quarters of serious injuries recorded last year. The Asia-Pacific and Europe/North Atlantic regions each reported three fatal accidents, while a single catastrophic crash in South America caused 62 deaths. Overall, Asia-Pacific recorded the highest number of fatalities, followed by South America, then Europe and the North Atlantic. Alongside accident data, ICAO flagged growing risks from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) disruptions, such as jamming and spoofing, which threaten the reliability of modern navigation. The organization is updating guidance and working with member states to protect GNSS integrity, while also strengthening runway safety initiatives, turbulence monitoring, and wildlife strike reporting. ICAO is further developing frameworks for civil-military cooperation to manage risks linked to conflict zones and restricted airspace, and it is preparing safety systems for the integration of unmanned aircraft and advanced air mobility vehicles into shared skies. ICAO leaders underscored that the rise in accidents is a wake-up call for regulators, airlines, and governments worldwide. Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar noted that the long-term safety trend remains positive but emphasized that “aviation remains the safest form of transport” only if proactive measures are sustained.

Moscow, Russia: Russian air defenses intercepted nearly 60 Ukrainian drones approaching Moscow in the early hours of Monday, prompting the temporary suspension of flights at all four major airports serving the Russian capital before operations were later restored, Russian authorities said. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that almost 60 drones heading toward the capital were shot down overnight. He did not provide further details on the scale of the attack or potential damage but said emergency services had been dispatched to locations where drone debris fell. Russia's aviation watchdog, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted operations at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports as a safety precaution during the attack. The agency later announced that flight operations had resumed after authorities determined conditions were safe. Officials did not immediately disclose how long the restrictions remained in effect or whether flights were delayed or cancelled. At roughly the same time, Russia carried out drone attacks on Ukraine, including strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Odessa. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported on Telegram,“Throughout the night and morning of June 22, 2026, the Russians struck civilian infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As a result of the enemy shelling, two women, aged 39 and 53, were killed. Another seven people were injured, including an 11-year-old boy.” The attack targeted civilian infrastructure in the southeastern Ukrainian city, with emergency services responding to the scene as authorities assessed the full extent of the damage. Ukrainian officials said the strike formed part of a broader wave of overnight Russian attacks reported across several regions of the country. The latest drone assault comes only days after Ukraine carried out a renewed strike on Moscow's only oil refinery, one of the region's most important fuel-production facilities. The refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft in Moscow's Kapotnya district, was struck for a second time within a week during a major Ukrainian drone offensive on June 18. Industry sources told Reuters that the attack damaged a key processing unit and temporarily halted refinery operations. The Moscow refinery is the capital region's largest fuel supplier and produced 11.6 million metric tons of oil products in 2024, including gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel. The facility has become a recurring target as Ukraine intensifies long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure. The June 22 attack reflects an escalating drone campaign by Ukraine aimed at military, energy and logistics infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked militant group that operates across the Sahel region. According to the company, the revision reflects lower-than-planned flying caused by the Middle East conflict, aircraft availability constraints linked to engine issues, and a strategy aimed at protecting profitability amid higher operating costs. Despite the weaker capacity outlook, IAG Chief Executive Officer Luis Gallego said the group remained confident about long-term demand and the resilience of its business model. "With these results IAG has again demonstrated that its excellent fundamentals are supporting continued value creation for our shareholders, despite the impact of the crisis in the Middle East and wider geopolitical events. "We are well-positioned to deal with these near-term headwinds with a diverse portfolio of world-class brands in large and attractive markets; industry-leading margins; significant free cash flow and a strong balance sheet; and attractive shareholder returns.
