Amsterdam, Netherlands: A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 777-300ER operating a scheduled service from Amsterdam to São Paulo made a precautionary return to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Friday after the flight crew declared an emergency while over western Europe. The aircraft, operating as Flight KL791, departed Amsterdam for São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport before turning back toward the Netherlands several hours into the journey. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft reversing course near the French coast and proceeding back toward Amsterdam, where it later landed safely. The aircraft involved was identified as Boeing 777-300ER registration PH-BVS. Fleet records indicate the widebody jet entered service with KLM in February 2017 and is one of 16 Boeing 777-300ERs operated by the Dutch flag carrier. The emergency declaration was linked to a suspected oil leak. However, neither KLM nor airport authorities had publicly confirmed the exact nature of the technical issue. As the aircraft returned to Schiphol, emergency services were placed on standby as a precaution. The aircraft conducted fuel-dumping procedures before landing, a common measure used by long-haul aircraft returning shortly after departure to reduce landing weight. Flight-tracking updates showed KL791 commencing its descent toward Amsterdam before approaching the Dutch coastline. The aircraft continued normally through the final stages of the approach and landed safely on Runway 27 at Schiphol Airport at approximately 1444 UK time (1544 local time in the Netherlands). Following touchdown, the Boeing 777 vacated the runway without difficulty and taxied under its own power to the terminal area. Reports indicated the aircraft subsequently parked at Gate F3, bringing the emergency response to a close without further incident. No injuries were reported, and no evacuation was required. As of publication, KLM had not released details regarding the number of passengers and crew onboard, nor had the airline provided further information regarding the suspected technical malfunction. The incident remains under review, and additional details are expected once KLM completes its technical inspection of the aircraft.
