The helicopter went down near the upper Te Naihi River area on Sunday morning in clear weather conditions. Three members of the hunting group survived as they were on the ground at the time of the crash. Authorities including TAIC and the Civil Aviation Authority have launched investigations, while recovery efforts continue in the difficult alpine terrain. The cause of the crash remains unknown. Wellington, New Zealand: Two experienced aviation and hunting professionals were killed after a chartered helicopter crashed in remote alpine terrain inside Mount Aspiring National Park on New Zealand’s South Island during a guided hunting operation. The victims were identified as pilot Tim Brown and hunting guide Sean Roach, both associated with Alpine Group Limited, also known as Alpine Helicopters. The company confirmed their deaths on May 18, describing both men as “highly experienced and valued members of a close-knit team.” According to New Zealand Police, emergency services received the first reports of the crash at around 9:50 a.m. local time on Sunday. The helicopter came down in rugged mountainous terrain in the upper Te Naihi River area of South Westland, approximately 24 kilometres west of Makarora and between Mount Aspiring and Mount Victor. Authorities said the aircraft was engaged in a guided hunting charter when it crashed into a mountainside inside the national park. Brown and Roach were the only occupants on board at the time of the accident. Three additional members of the hunting party were on the ground when the helicopter went down and survived without reported injuries. Alpine Group stated that the flight had been operating in “clear and calm conditions,” adding further uncertainty to the cause of the accident. The company said it was devastated by the loss and extended condolences to the families of both victims. “We are devastated to confirm that both pilot Tim Brown and guide Sean Roach were tragically killed,” the company said in a statement. The operator also thanked New Zealand Police, the Rescue Coordination Centre, Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust, Queenstown Alpine Cliff Rescue teams and other emergency responders for their rapid response in difficult terrain. Investigators from the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) and New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have launched parallel investigations into the crash. TAIC confirmed that a specialist team had arrived at the site and split into two groups, with one examining the wreckage while another interviewed witnesses and gathered operational evidence. Investigators are expected to remain in the area for several days due to the remoteness of the location. The wreckage had not yet been removed as of the latest updates, with investigators saying recovery would occur “when practicable.” The helicopter departed Wanaka Airport at approximately 7:39 a.m. and climbed above 5,500 feet before heading north toward the Southern Alps. The aircraft’s last recorded position at around 8:11 a.m. showed it descending to slightly above 3,000 feet before contact was lost. Tim Brown was widely known in New Zealand’s aviation sector and had previously flown for operators including Paton Air, Roncato Helicopters and Elite Aviation Services before joining Alpine Helicopters. Reports described him as particularly respected within agricultural and farming aviation circles. A fundraising campaign launched for Brown’s family said his death came as a “heartbreaking shock.” He is survived by his wife and daughter. Brown had also recently invested heavily into a new business venture, creating additional uncertainty for his family following the tragedy. Sean Roach was a former captain of the Otago men’s amateur golf team and was well known within hunting and sporting communities in the South Island. He had survived a serious hunting accident in 2008 after being gored by a stag near Naseby, suffering significant puncture wounds. Two Onboard Killed In Chartered Helicopter Crash In New Zealand National Park

Ohio, United States: Two people were killed after a small single-engine aircraft crashed into a residential home in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, triggering a massive fire and prompting a federal investigation into the cause of the accident. Authorities confirmed that the victims were the two occupants onboard the aircraft, while a family of four inside the house escaped safely without injuries. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft involved was a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, identified in several reports as a 1963 Piper Cherokee. The aircraft crashed into a home on Canterbury Circle at approximately 3:45 p.m. local time after departing from Akron Fulton Regional Airport, located only a few miles from the crash site. The identities of the two deceased occupants had not been officially released as of the latest updates. Authorities also have not disclosed whether the flight was private, instructional, or recreational. The Akron Fire Department said a couple and their two children were inside the residence when the aircraft slammed into the garage area of the house. All four managed to escape unharmed before flames engulfed parts of the structure. Akron Fire Department District Chief Sierjie Lash confirmed during a press briefing that no one on the ground suffered injuries. “There were a couple and two children that lived there. They were all four home, and they were able to get out with no injuries, so we're very fortunate that they are safe,” Lash said. Emergency responders initially treated the incident as a residential structure fire after receiving multiple calls reporting explosions, heavy smoke and flames. “We got a call that residents saw a plane going down into the house,” Lash said. “We got more calls that people heard explosions.” Residents in the neighborhood described hearing a loud whining sound moments before the impact. Neighbor Christi Gould said power briefly flickered before the crash. “We were sitting there, the power flickered for a few seconds, and then I heard the whining of a plane,” she said, adding that a loud explosion shook nearby homes seconds later. Another resident, Jewell Ulrich, described seeing the aircraft debris scattered between homes after the crash. “That fire was instant,” Ulrich said. “It was so hot.” Her husband, Steve Ulrich, said the aircraft’s tail section remained lodged near the garage area after the impact. Videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising above the suburban neighborhood while flames consumed parts of the residence. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and is expected to release a preliminary report in the coming days. As of now, officials have not confirmed the cause of the accident. No distress call, mechanical failure, weather issue or pilot-related factor has yet been officially identified. Authorities also evacuated at least one neighboring home as a precaution while investigators assessed structural damage to the impacted residence.

Two Killed After Piper PA-28 Crashes Into Akron Home, Family Escapes Without Injuries

Ruidoso, United States: A medical transport aircraft operating in New Mexico crashed in rugged mountainous terrain near Ruidoso early Thursday morning, killing all four people on board and igniting a wildfire in the surrounding forest, according to local authorities and federal aviation officials. The aircraft, operated by Trans Aero MedEvac, a Beechcraft King Air 90 departed from Roswell Air Center and was en route to Sierra Blanca Regional Airport when communication and radar contact were lost shortly before dawn. Officials later received reports of both a missing aircraft and a fire burning in the Capitan Mountains near Ruidoso, prompting an extensive emergency response. Authorities said the aircraft failed to arrive at its scheduled destination, leading emergency protocols to be activated. Search teams located the wreckage between approximately 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. local time in steep, rocky terrain that responders described as difficult to access. Rescue crews reportedly had to hike nearly half a mile through mountainous conditions to reach the crash site. All four occupants were killed in the crash. Officials confirmed the victims were members of the flight crew and medical personnel involved in the transport mission. Medical Transport Plane Crash In New Mexico Kills Four, Ignites Forest Fire

Pune, India: On Wednesday morning, a two-seater training aircraft belonging to Redbird Aviation crash-landed near Gojubavi village adjacent to Baramati Airport during a training sortie. Preliminary reports said the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff at around 8:30–8:50 AM local time. According to Pune Rural Police and airport officials, only a trainee pilot was onboard the aircraft at the time of the crash. The pilot survived the accident without serious injuries. Authorities said the aircraft was flying at a relatively low altitude when it reportedly developed a technical malfunction. Eyewitnesses told investigators that while attempting an emergency landing, part of the aircraft struck a light pole before crashing into an open field near the airport perimeter. Baramati Airport Director Shivaji Taware confirmed that the aircraft belonged to Redbird Aviation Academy and said the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined. Police teams and local officials rushed to the site immediately after the incident, while technical assessments of the wreckage and a formal investigation are now underway. The crash comes less than four months after the devastating Learjet 45XR accident on January 28, 2026, involving a VSR Ventures charter aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The aircraft, registered VT-SSK, crashed during an attempted landing at Baramati Airport amid poor visibility and heavy fog conditions. All five people onboard including Ajit Pawar, his personal security officer, two pilots and a flight attendant were killed in the crash. The jet burst into flames after impact during a second approach attempt to Runway 11. Redbird’s Previous Training Aircraft Incidents At Baramati Airport: August 9, 2025: Near Baramati Airport in Pune, a Redbird Flight Training Centre trainer aircraft crash-landed after a tyre issue caused the front wheel to detach on touchdown, the trainee pilot escaped unhurt. October 19, 2023: At Baramati Airfield in Maharashtra, a Redbird Aviation Tecnam P2008JC aircraft (VT-RBC) crashed while carrying out circuit landing training after developing a technical snag, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing just outside the airfield boundary. October 22, 2023: The incident occurred near Baramati, Maharashtra, a Redbird Aviation Tecnam P2008JPC aircraft (VT-RBT), operating a sector training flight with an assistant flight instructor and a student on board, suffered an engine failure and crash-landed, toppling after touchdown.

Trainee Pilot Survives After Red Bird Training Aircraft Crashes Near Baramati Airport

Sossusvlei, Namibia: A Desert Air Namibia-operated Cessna 210 carrying a German pilot and three German tourists crashed near Hammersdal, close to Sossusvlei in Namibia, killing all four occupants, according to statements released by company officials and Namibian authorities. The wreckage of the aircraft was located on the morning of 11 May 2026 following an overnight search operation in the remote desert region. According to Desert Air Namibia Chief Executive Officer Willem De Wet, “The wreckage was located at approximately 09:15 this morning with no survivors.” De Wet also extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Philippine Lundama, Acting Director of Namibia’s Directorate of Aircraft Accident Investigation (DAAI), said the aircraft crashed at around 11:00. “According to them, there are no survivors. The aircraft burst into flames and burned to the ground. There was a pilot and three passengers. The pilot was a German national who works for Desert Air, and the tourists who were with him are also Germans,” Lundama said. Among the victims are Silke Lohmiller, the long-time managing director of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, as well as her husband Richard and their son. They were from the Heilbronn region. According to the foundation, Lohmiller worked for the Schwarz Group, which includes Lidl and Kaufland, for more than four decades. Authorities have publicly confirmed that the tourists had departed from Windhoek's international airport on Sunday in a Cessna 210. The small plane was scheduled to land about an hour later on the private airstrip of a lodge in the Sossusvlei area but crashed near Hammersdal. The cause of the crash remains unknown and is expected to be investigated by the Directorate of Aircraft Accident Investigation. Desert Air Namibia is known for operating scenic and charter flights across Namibia, including tourism flights over the Sossusvlei region. Singapore: Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group reported a sharp 57.4 per cent decline in annual net profit for the financial year ended March 31, 2026, as mounting losses at Air India and the absence of a one-time accounting gain from the Vistara merger weighed heavily on the carrier’s bottom line. The airline group posted a net profit of SGD 1.184 billion for FY2025/26, down from SGD 2.778 billion recorded a year earlier. Despite the steep fall in earnings, SIA’s core airline operations remained strong, with the group posting record revenue and higher operating profit driven by sustained passenger demand and network expansion. According to SIA’s earnings report, the biggest factor behind the profit decline was the absence of the SGD 1.098 billion non-cash accounting gain booked in November 2024 following the completion of the Air India-Vistara merger. The previous year’s results had been significantly boosted by that one-off gain after SIA’s stake in Vistara was converted into a 25.1 per cent shareholding in the enlarged Air India Group. At the same time, SIA swung from reporting profits from associated companies last year to posting a SGD 846 million share of losses in FY26, mainly due to Air India’s worsening financial performance. The airline said this year’s accounts reflected a full year of Air India losses, compared to only four months in the previous financial year after the merger completion. Financial disclosures from Singapore Airlines indicated that Air India Group, comprising Air India and Air India Express, recorded losses of approximately SGD 3.56 billion, equivalent to around USD 2.8 billion or more than ₹26,000 crore during FY2025/26. Some reports estimated the losses could be even higher at nearly ₹28,300 crore depending on accounting adjustments and currency conversion methods. The losses mark Air India’s largest annual financial setback since the Tata Group reacquired the airline in 2022. Air India has not yet officially released its standalone FY26 financial statements. Singapore Airlines attributed Air India’s financial pressure to multiple operational and geopolitical challenges, including elevated jet fuel prices, Middle East airspace restrictions, supply-chain disruptions, aircraft delivery delays, and the continued closure of Pakistani airspace for Indian airlines. These factors forced Air India to reroute several long-haul flights, increasing fuel burn and operating costs. The impact of the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz also emerged as a major concern for SIA itself. Group revenue rose five per cent year-on-year to a record SGD 20.55 billion, supported by strong passenger demand, higher yields, and robust travel flows across Asia and Europe. Operating profit climbed 39 per cent to approximately SGD 2.52 billion, and the airline carried a record 42.4 million passengers during the year. The airline also maintained expansion plans despite industry pressures. Reuters reported that SIA intends to continue adding capacity and launching new services, including flights connecting Singapore and Madrid via Barcelona, while increasing frequencies to Manchester, Milan, Munich, and London Gatwick.

Las Vegas, United States: Allegiant Air has completed its $1.5 billion acquisition of Sun Country Airlines, creating one of the largest leisure-focused ultra-low-cost airline groups in the United States as consolidation continues across the American aviation sector. The merger, finalized following shareholder and regulatory approvals, combines two carriers known for serving price-sensitive leisure travelers and underserved routes across North America. The transaction marks a significant shift in the ultra-low-cost carrier market at a time when airlines are facing rising operating costs, changing travel demand patterns, and increasing competitive pressure. Under the agreement first announced earlier this year, Sun Country shareholders received a mix of cash and Allegiant stock, with Allegiant shareholders expected to hold approximately 67% of the combined company while Sun Country investors retain the remaining stake. The deal values Sun Country at approximately $1.5 billion, including debt. Executives from both airlines described the merger as a strategic move aimed at expanding network reach, improving operational efficiency, and diversifying revenue streams beyond traditional passenger services. According to the AIID data, Aviation Training Organisations (ATOs) recorded 19 accidents during 2025/26, down from 26 the previous year and 30 in 2023/24. However, training-related serious incidents rose dramatically from four in 2024/25 to 19 in 2025/26, signalling growing operational stress within the sector. The report identified flight crew and pilot actions as the leading causal factor in 55% of accidents investigated, reinforcing concerns about pilot judgment, risk assessment and airmanship standards. AIID Executive Themba Thabethe warned that the industry’s declining accident numbers should not obscure the underlying severity of recent crashes, particularly in general aviation and training environments where fatal outcomes are rising disproportionately. The presentation highlighted that South Africa averaged more than six accidents per month during the reporting period, while the fatal accident rate increased sharply from 3% to 22%. Investigators said the most persistent safety threats remain concentrated in general aviation, non-type certified aircraft and training operations segments that dominate pilot development pipelines across Africa. The report also showed that non-type certified aircraft and general aviation categories continued to represent the highest-risk operational areas. A series of recent accident case studies presented by AIID revealed recurring patterns involving deteriorating weather, continuation bias, inadequate safety management oversight and pilots pressing into instrument meteorological conditions despite warnings. On 9 June 2025 an accident involving a Piper PA-28-180 operating under Part 91 rules ended in a crash landing near Greytown after pilots departed despite severe weather warnings issued for KwaZulu-Natal. A related aircraft in the formation flight was destroyed, killing three people, including a student pilot. Investigators identified spatial disorientation and poor go/no-go decision-making as central factors. Another fatal October 2025 accident involving a Sling 2 aircraft operated by an ATO highlighted concerns surrounding student-level endorsements and weather risk assessment after the pilot encountered deteriorating conditions over mountainous terrain in KwaZulu-Natal. The pilot was killed after the aircraft crashed near Boston in the Midlands. AIID said the investigations demonstrated “cross-cutting lessons” affecting the wider training environment, including poor pre-flight risk culture, inadequate Safety Management Systems (SMS) oversight and pilots continuing flights incrementally into worsening conditions instead of diverting. The authority further noted that visual meteorological conditions at departure often created a false sense of security for inexperienced pilots, particularly in terrain-heavy regions where weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. While the airline sector maintained a zero fatal accident rate, investigators cautioned that serious incidents involving larger commercial operations under Part 121 regulations increased from one to six cases during the year, warranting “focused monitoring and intervention.” The report nevertheless contrasted the challenges facing general aviation with South Africa’s strong airline safety record. The country has not experienced a fatal airline accident on its soil in more than 59 years, while no fatal accident involving a South African airline operator has occurred in over 39 years. International benchmarking presented by AIID showed South Africa’s fatal accident average of approximately 11% remains broadly comparable with Australia and Canada. However, investigators stressed that the sharp rise in fatal accidents during 2025/26 demands “absolute improvement.” Safety officials said the data highlights a critical challenge facing Africa’s aviation growth ambitions: expanding pilot training capacity while maintaining robust operational discipline and oversight standards. Turbulence has also emerged as a key concern, responsible for nearly three-quarters of serious injuries recorded last year. The Asia-Pacific and Europe/North Atlantic regions each reported three fatal accidents, while a single catastrophic crash in South America caused 62 deaths. Overall, Asia-Pacific recorded the highest number of fatalities, followed by South America, then Europe and the North Atlantic. Alongside accident data, ICAO flagged growing risks from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) disruptions, such as jamming and spoofing, which threaten the reliability of modern navigation. The organization is updating guidance and working with member states to protect GNSS integrity, while also strengthening runway safety initiatives, turbulence monitoring, and wildlife strike reporting. ICAO is further developing frameworks for civil-military cooperation to manage risks linked to conflict zones and restricted airspace, and it is preparing safety systems for the integration of unmanned aircraft and advanced air mobility vehicles into shared skies.
