The scramble for personnel comes amid tighter safety rules on flight duty times and a recent operational disruption at the country’s largest airline. The roster crisis first became widely visible earlier in December, when IndiGo operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd cancelled thousands of flights due to crew unavailability following the implementation of stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These rules, aimed at improving pilot rest and reducing fatigue, require longer rest periods and limit the number of night landings, increasing the number of pilots needed for scheduled services. According to TOI, both IndiGo and the Air India group have entered a fierce competition to recruit experienced captains, with some offers reportedly including joining bonuses of up to ₹50 lakh to attract talent from rivals or international carriers. Such incentives rarely seen at this scale in Indian aviation reflect the acute need for senior pilots capable of leading flight operations across domestic and international routes. Earlier IndiGo has informed the DGCA that it plans to add about 100 pilots in January, while Air India has launched new hiring drives. However, both carriers are dealing with a rise in captain departures, some moving overseas sharpening the recruitment battle as airlines work to meet required crew levels. A senior airline executive quoted by TOI described the situation as exceptionally intense, noting that carriers are actively poaching captains from each other and bracing for continued shortages as FDTL norms reduce the pool of available crew. In response to the operational stress and pilot attrition, IndiGo has announced a revision of pilot compensation, including increases in domestic layover, deadhead, night flying, transit, and newly introduced tail-swap allowances, effective January 1, 2026. Communication from the airline’s flight operations leadership details the enhanced pay structure for both captains and first officers. India is set to see an intense contest for captains between the Air India group and IndiGo. While Air India does not currently face a pilot shortage across most of its fleet, barring the Boeing 787, it must recruit for future growth. The next-generation helicopter was flagged off by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who also shared the cockpit with the pilot before take-off, underlining government support for self-reliance in aviation manufacturing. Developed and manufactured by HAL, the Dhruv-NG builds on the company’s existing Dhruv helicopter platform with upgrades tailored to civil aviation requirements. The 5.5-tonne, twin-engine multi-role helicopter is equipped with twin Shakti 1H1C engines an indigenous powerplant that offers enhanced power and the advantage of in-country maintenance and support, according to HAL officials. The variant features a civil-certified glass cockpit compliant with stringent aviation standards, a modern avionics suite for improved situational awareness, and enhanced safety systems including crashworthy seats and self-sealing fuel tanks. Cancellation figures include both departures and arrivals, with reports noting 131 departures and 97 arrivals affected. Across northern India, analysts estimate that up to 300 flights were cancelled as the disruption spread to other airports in the region and hundreds more were delayed, compounding travel challenges for passengers ahead of the peak winter travel period. Flight 6E‑7361, an ATR‑72 turboprop carrying about 70 passengers, made contact with the runway with its tail section during touchdown, according to airport authorities. Vinod Kumar, Ranchi Airport Director, confirmed that the impact was jolting but did not endanger passenger safety. “All passengers were safe. The aircraft sustained minor damage and has been grounded pending technical inspection,” Kumar stated. Following the incident, the aircraft was withdrawn from service after preliminary checks indicated it was unfit for further operations. The airline also cancelled the return flight from Ranchi to Bhubaneswar, offering passengers alternative arrangements or rescheduling options. Some passengers were transported by road to nearby destinations. Airport operations remained normal despite the incident. Seoni, India: A training aircraft belonging to Redbird Flight Training Academy crashed on Monday evening after its wing struck a 33 kV high-voltage power line near Sukatra village, in the Kurai police-station area of Seoni district. According to police, the incident occurred around 6:25–6:30 pm, roughly 2 km from the Suktara airstrip, as the aircraft was preparing to land. Eyewitness accounts describe sparks and a loud explosion as the plane’s wing contacted the line, after which the aircraft plunged into a nearby field. Authorities identified those on board as the instructor pilot Ajit Anthony and trainee pilot Ashok Chawda. Both sustained injuries and were taken to a private hospital in Barapathar. Officials say they are “out of danger.” Local police and power-company staff, aided by villagers, rescued the two pilots from the wreckage soon after the crash. A preliminary probe indicates that the aircraft may have suffered a “technical snag,” possibly an engine malfunction, causing it to lose power as it descended. The wing then struck the overhead power line of the Badalpar Substation, triggering the crash. The impact caused the 33 kV line to snap, immediately tripping the electricity supply. Roughly 80–90 villages around the substations reportedly experienced a blackout, and repair crews have been deployed to restore power to the affected areas. The district police have launched an official investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the crash. It remains uncertain whether pilot error, mechanical failure, or a combination of factors led to the collision. Final determination will await the outcome of the inquiry. So far, there have been no fatalities. Residents near the Suktara airstrip, however, expressed deep concern, noting that this was not the first incident involving a training aircraft in the area. Earlier in May 2025, a training aircraft operated by Redbird Aviation Pvt. Ltd. overturned during landing at the Suktara airstrip in Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh. The flight was being conducted solo by a trainee pilot. Initial reports attribute the incident to a faulty landing. Fortunately, the trainee escaped without injury and there was no fire. Months later on August 9, 2025 again a trainer aircraft of Redbird Flight Training Centre crash-landed near Baramati Airport in Pune district. During a routine training sortie at around 8 a.m., the trainee pilot realised one of the aircraft’s tyres was damaged. Upon touchdown, the front wheel detached and the aircraft veered off the taxiway, crossing to the far side of the airfield. Despite the abrupt landing and loss of the wheel, the pilot escaped unhurt.

The combined impact of delays and cancellations caused widespread disruption for domestic travellers, leaving passengers stranded, scrambling for alternatives, and highlighting the operational strain on the airline’s network. According to the draft released by the DGCA, passengers will be allowed to cancel or modify their tickets within 48 hours of booking without paying any cancellation or change fee, provided that the scheduled departure is at least five days away for domestic flights and fifteen days for international flights. The proposed rules, currently open for stakeholder feedback, are designed to address frequent passenger complaints over steep cancellation fees, refund delays, and lack of transparency in ticket pricing. “This proposal aims to ensure greater transparency and passenger convenience by streamlining refund and cancellation processes,” DGCA Director General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai told The Times of India. Key Highlights of the Proposed Policy 48-Hour Free Cancellation: Passengers can cancel or modify flight bookings within two days of purchase without incurring airline-imposed penalties. Only fare differences, if applicable, will be charged. 21-Day Refund Deadline: Airlines will be required to process refunds within 21 working days, including tickets booked through travel agents or third-party portals. Transparency in Charges: Airlines must clearly disclose cancellation and rescheduling fees before ticket purchase and will not be allowed to impose additional “processing” or “administrative” fees. Refund of Taxes and Fees: Passengers cancelling unused or partially used tickets will be eligible for refunds on all applicable taxes, including user development and airport service charges. Medical and Emergency Cancellations: In the event of medical emergencies or death of a passenger, airlines will be encouraged to provide full refunds or offer credit shells without penalty. Applicability to Foreign Airlines: The DGCA clarified that these rules will also apply to foreign carriers operating flights to and from India, ensuring uniformity across operators. The move comes after growing dissatisfaction among travellers over high cancellation costs and delayed refunds, issues that surged during the pandemic period.
