Hyderabad, India: Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has become India’s first space-tech unicorn after raising $60 million in a major funding round led by Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, marking a defining moment for the country’s rapidly expanding private space sector. The funding round pushed the company’s valuation to approximately $1.1 billion, making it the first Indian private space startup to cross the unicorn threshold. The round saw participation from funds managed by BlackRock, founders of Greenko Group, Arkam Ventures, Playbook Partners, Shanghvi Family Office and several existing investors. With this latest infusion, Skyroot’s total funding has climbed to nearly $160 million since its founding in 2018. The company said the fresh capital will be used to increase launch frequency, expand manufacturing capacity, accelerate development of its heavier-lift Vikram-2 rocket and strengthen its commercial launch operations globally. Founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot emerged from Hyderabad’s growing deep-tech ecosystem and became one of the earliest startups incubated at T-Hub. The company was established shortly after the Indian government opened the space sector to private participation in 2020, enabling startups to access ISRO facilities and infrastructure. Skyroot later became the first private Indian company to formally sign an agreement with ISRO for testing and launch support. Skyroot first entered global headlines in November 2022 after successfully launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket to reach space. The suborbital mission, named “Mission Prarambh,” was launched from Sriharikota and reached an apogee of nearly 89.5 kilometres, establishing the company as a pioneer in India’s commercial launch industry. The company is now preparing for the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1, which is expected to become India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. Skyroot has positioned the Vikram series as low-cost, rapidly deployable launch systems designed primarily for the growing global small satellite market. According to the company, the Vikram rockets incorporate extensive use of carbon composite structures, modular architecture and 3D-printed engines to reduce manufacturing timelines and operational costs. Skyroot has repeatedly stated that its long-term objective is to make space launches as reliable, regular and affordable as commercial aviation. Sherpalo Ventures founder Ram Shriram, one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent early technology investors and an early Google backer, is expected to join Skyroot’s board following the investment. Sherpalo had previously invested in the company during earlier funding rounds as well. Skyroot’s rise also reflects Hyderabad’s emergence as a major aerospace and defence innovation hub. Telangana leaders, including former IT minister KT Rama Rao, described the milestone as a validation of the state’s long-term focus on innovation infrastructure and deep-tech incubation through platforms such as T-Hub and T-Works. In recent years, Skyroot has significantly expanded its infrastructure footprint. In 2023, the company unveiled “MAX-Q,” described as India’s largest private integrated rocket development facility near Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The company has also signed agreements with the Telangana government to establish integrated private rocket manufacturing, integration and testing facilities in the state. The startup has additionally developed multiple propulsion technologies under its “Kalam” engine series, named after former President and aerospace scientist APJ Abdul Kalam. Among its milestones were successful tests of the Kalam-5 and Kalam-100 rocket motors, both intended for use in the Vikram launch vehicles. The company has claimed these systems represent some of the largest privately developed rocket stages tested in India. Skyroot’s unicorn milestone comes amid growing momentum in India’s private spacetech sector, with companies such as Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Bellatrix Aerospace and Dhruva Space also attracting increasing investor interest and international partnerships. Analysts believe the country’s lower launch costs, engineering talent base and expanding satellite market position India as a major future player in the global commercial space industry. Chief executive Pawan Kumar Chandana recently said global demand for satellite launches and international customers would become a major long-term revenue driver for the company as commercial launch requirements continue rising worldwide.

Kansas City, United States: An American Airlines regional jet operating as American Eagle Flight 5318 made an emergency landing after smoke was reported inside the cabin while the aircraft was approaching its destination in Kansas City, according to airline officials and air traffic control recordings. The flight, operated by PSA Airlines using a Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet, had departed from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and was en route to Kansas City with 76 passengers and crew members onboard. The emergency unfolded shortly before landing when the crew detected smoke inside the aircraft. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot declaring an emergency as the aircraft neared the airport. In the transmission, the pilot stated, “Bluestreak 5318, declaring an emergency. We’re landing,” signaling the urgency of the situation. The aircraft was reportedly about two miles from the runway when the emergency was declared. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched and positioned along the runway as the jet prepared for landing. The aircraft landed safely without further incident. Following touchdown, passengers were evacuated onto the taxiway as firefighters and emergency personnel inspected the aircraft. Images and videos shared online showed passengers exiting through overwing exits and standing on the tarmac while first responders surrounded the regional jet. Among those onboard was U.S. Congressman Tracey Mann, who later shared details of the incident on social media. In a video posted after the landing, Mann thanked emergency responders and confirmed smoke had been detected onboard the aircraft. “There was smoke on our aircraft and so we landed and are now sitting on the tarmac,” he said in the video, while also expressing appreciation for airport fire and rescue crews responding to the emergency. American Airlines later issued a statement emphasizing that passenger and crew safety remained the airline’s highest priority. The carrier apologized to customers for the disruption and said maintenance teams would inspect the aircraft to determine the source of the smoke indication. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it has opened an investigation into the incident. Smoke or fumes inside an aircraft cabin are treated as serious in-flight emergencies because they can indicate electrical malfunctions, overheating systems, or other onboard hazards that may escalate rapidly if not contained. No injuries were immediately reported following the emergency landing, and passengers were later assisted by airline personnel at the airport while arrangements for onward travel were being made.

Washington, United States: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a nationwide initiative to equip thousands of airport vehicles with transponders following the deadly March 2026 runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport involving an Air Canada Express regional jet and an airport fire truck. The FAA said it will invest $16.5 million to install transponders on approximately 1,900 airport vehicles operating across 264 U.S. airports, aiming to strengthen runway safety and improve real-time surface tracking for air traffic controllers. The decision follows findings from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation into the March 22 collision between Air Canada Express Flight 8646, operated by Jazz Aviation, and a Port Authority fire truck at LaGuardia Airport. Investigators revealed that the fire truck involved in the accident was not equipped with a transponder, preventing the airport’s Advanced Surface Detection Equipment-X (ASDE-X) system from accurately tracking the vehicle and generating a collision warning for controllers. The Air Canada Express Bombardier CRJ900 had arrived from Montreal and was landing on Runway 4 when the fire truck crossed the active runway while responding to a separate emergency involving a United Airlines aircraft. Seconds before impact, controllers repeatedly instructed the vehicle to stop, but the aircraft collided with the truck during touchdown. Both pilots were killed, while dozens of passengers and crew members suffered injuries. According to preliminary NTSB findings, the ASDE-X runway safety system at LaGuardia failed to issue an automated alert warning controllers of the dangerous proximity between the aircraft and the vehicle. Investigators said the absence of a transponder on the fire truck was a significant factor in the system’s inability to detect and predict the vehicle’s movement. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the deployment of transponder technology would help close critical gaps in airport surface surveillance and improve situational awareness for controllers operating at busy airports. The FAA added that airports can also use federal grant funding to install similar equipment on locally operated vehicles. More than 50 airports have already expressed interest in adopting the technology. The FAA’s plan covers vehicles operating at airports equipped with ASDE-X and related surface monitoring systems, which rely partly on transponder data to track aircraft and ground vehicles moving on runways and taxiways. Aviation safety experts have long advocated broader use of the technology to reduce runway incursions and prevent collisions involving airport vehicles. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had earlier confirmed plans to equip emergency response vehicles at LaGuardia, John F. Singapore: Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group reported a sharp 57.4 per cent decline in annual net profit for the financial year ended March 31, 2026, as mounting losses at Air India and the absence of a one-time accounting gain from the Vistara merger weighed heavily on the carrier’s bottom line. The airline group posted a net profit of SGD 1.184 billion for FY2025/26, down from SGD 2.778 billion recorded a year earlier. Despite the steep fall in earnings, SIA’s core airline operations remained strong, with the group posting record revenue and higher operating profit driven by sustained passenger demand and network expansion. According to SIA’s earnings report, the biggest factor behind the profit decline was the absence of the SGD 1.098 billion non-cash accounting gain booked in November 2024 following the completion of the Air India-Vistara merger. The previous year’s results had been significantly boosted by that one-off gain after SIA’s stake in Vistara was converted into a 25.1 per cent shareholding in the enlarged Air India Group. At the same time, SIA swung from reporting profits from associated companies last year to posting a SGD 846 million share of losses in FY26, mainly due to Air India’s worsening financial performance. The airline said this year’s accounts reflected a full year of Air India losses, compared to only four months in the previous financial year after the merger completion. Financial disclosures from Singapore Airlines indicated that Air India Group, comprising Air India and Air India Express, recorded losses of approximately SGD 3.56 billion, equivalent to around USD 2.8 billion or more than ₹26,000 crore during FY2025/26. Some reports estimated the losses could be even higher at nearly ₹28,300 crore depending on accounting adjustments and currency conversion methods. The losses mark Air India’s largest annual financial setback since the Tata Group reacquired the airline in 2022. Air India has not yet officially released its standalone FY26 financial statements. Singapore Airlines attributed Air India’s financial pressure to multiple operational and geopolitical challenges, including elevated jet fuel prices, Middle East airspace restrictions, supply-chain disruptions, aircraft delivery delays, and the continued closure of Pakistani airspace for Indian airlines. These factors forced Air India to reroute several long-haul flights, increasing fuel burn and operating costs. The impact of the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz also emerged as a major concern for SIA itself. The airline warned that higher jet fuel prices resulting from the conflict are expected to weigh more heavily on earnings in the coming fiscal year because fuel costs are reflected on a lagged basis. Air India recently announced significant reductions to its international operations between June and August 2026, including suspending services on several overseas routes and reducing frequencies to destinations in Europe and North America. Routes affected include Delhi-Chicago, Mumbai-New York, and Delhi-Shanghai, while services to Paris, Milan, and Rome are also being reduced. Despite the financial turbulence, Singapore Airlines reiterated its long-term commitment to Air India and described the investment as a “core component” of its multi-hub strategy. The group said its partnership with Tata Sons provides direct access to one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets while complementing SIA’s Singapore hub operations. SIA stated that Air India continues to make progress in its fleet renewal and aircraft retrofit programme, customer experience initiatives, and operational performance improvements despite the difficult environment. While net profit fell sharply, Singapore Airlines’ operational performance remained resilient. Group revenue rose five per cent year-on-year to a record SGD 20.55 billion, supported by strong passenger demand, higher yields, and robust travel flows across Asia and Europe. Operating profit climbed 39 per cent to approximately SGD 2.52 billion, and the airline carried a record 42.4 million passengers during the year. The airline also maintained expansion plans despite industry pressures. Reuters reported that SIA intends to continue adding capacity and launching new services, including flights connecting Singapore and Madrid via Barcelona, while increasing frequencies to Manchester, Milan, Munich, and London Gatwick.

Ohio, United States: Two people were killed after a small single-engine aircraft crashed into a residential home in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, triggering a massive fire and prompting a federal investigation into the cause of the accident. Authorities confirmed that the victims were the two occupants onboard the aircraft, while a family of four inside the house escaped safely without injuries. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft involved was a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, identified in several reports as a 1963 Piper Cherokee. The aircraft crashed into a home on Canterbury Circle at approximately 3:45 p.m. local time after departing from Akron Fulton Regional Airport, located only a few miles from the crash site. The identities of the two deceased occupants had not been officially released as of the latest updates. Authorities also have not disclosed whether the flight was private, instructional, or recreational. The Akron Fire Department said a couple and their two children were inside the residence when the aircraft slammed into the garage area of the house. All four managed to escape unharmed before flames engulfed parts of the structure. Akron Fire Department District Chief Sierjie Lash confirmed during a press briefing that no one on the ground suffered injuries. “There were a couple and two children that lived there. They were all four home, and they were able to get out with no injuries, so we're very fortunate that they are safe,” Lash said. Emergency responders initially treated the incident as a residential structure fire after receiving multiple calls reporting explosions, heavy smoke and flames. “We got a call that residents saw a plane going down into the house,” Lash said. “We got more calls that people heard explosions.” Residents in the neighborhood described hearing a loud whining sound moments before the impact. Neighbor Christi Gould said power briefly flickered before the crash. “We were sitting there, the power flickered for a few seconds, and then I heard the whining of a plane,” she said, adding that a loud explosion shook nearby homes seconds later. Another resident, Jewell Ulrich, described seeing the aircraft debris scattered between homes after the crash. “That fire was instant,” Ulrich said. “It was so hot.” Her husband, Steve Ulrich, said the aircraft’s tail section remained lodged near the garage area after the impact. Videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising above the suburban neighborhood while flames consumed parts of the residence. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and is expected to release a preliminary report in the coming days. As of now, officials have not confirmed the cause of the accident. No distress call, mechanical failure, weather issue or pilot-related factor has yet been officially identified. Authorities also evacuated at least one neighboring home as a precaution while investigators assessed structural damage to the impacted residence.
