Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has highlighted Brazil’s significant potential to become a global leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, positioning the country as a key contributor to aviation’s decarbonisation efforts while strengthening energy security and driving economic growth. The assessment was presented during IATA’s 82nd Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, where the association outlined Brazil’s strategic advantages in supporting the aviation industry's transition toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. According to IATA, airlines worldwide will require approximately 500 million tonnes (Mt) of SAF annually by 2050 to meet the sector’s net-zero commitment. Brazil is well positioned to support this demand due to its extensive biomass resources and established biofuels industry. IATA estimates that Brazil possesses one of the world's largest biomass feedstock potentials, capable of reaching around 180 million tonnes by 2050, which could support the production of approximately 60 million tonnes of SAF. In the near term, sustainably sourced sugarcane ethanol along with virgin and waste oil feedstocks could provide around 18 million tonnes of feedstock by 2030, translating into approximately 12 million tonnes of SAF production potential. IATA noted that this volume would be roughly five times greater than the estimated global SAF production of 2.4 million tonnes expected in 2026. Brazil currently has around 15 SAF development projects underway. If all projects proceed as planned, they could collectively bring approximately 2 million tonnes of SAF production capacity online. “Brazil has all the ingredients to be a global SAF powerhouse. It has one of the cleanest electricity mixes in the world as well as abundant feedstock. Moreover, as the second largest producer of liquid biofuels in the world, the country benefits from deep expertise and developed infrastructure. Brazil has a real opportunity to be a global leader in aviation’s decarbonisation. Embracing this opportunity will create jobs, reduce dependence on foreign fossil fuels, build new energy and agriculture industries, and grow the economy. With the right policies implemented in the right order, Brazil is ready to jump-start the market,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General. Beyond feedstock availability, IATA emphasized that Brazil’s extensive experience in ethanol production and its established refining infrastructure provide substantial competitive advantages for SAF development. These strengths create a solid foundation for scaling production through Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) pathways and other advanced SAF technologies, particularly ethanol-to-jet fuel processes. The association believes this could eventually position Brazil as a net exporter of sustainable aviation fuel. IATA further noted that large-scale SAF production could generate substantial economic benefits across the entire value chain, including agriculture, feedstock cultivation, logistics, infrastructure development, refining, advanced fuel manufacturing and export activities. The association said such growth would support job creation, enhance energy independence and security, improve soil quality, strengthen natural capital and deliver benefits to local communities. Despite the country's significant potential, IATA acknowledged that SAF production in Brazil remains at an early stage and that achieving industrial-scale output will require several critical enablers. Among the priorities identified are investments in conversion technologies, expanded infrastructure and improved logistics networks to efficiently connect feedstock suppliers with fuel production facilities. IATA also called for targeted policy incentives designed to stimulate production, strengthen financing mechanisms and ensure alignment with internationally recognized sustainability standards. Another important element highlighted by the association is the implementation of a book-and-claim system based on tradable SAF certificates. IATA welcomed plans for Brazil’s Fuel of the Future framework (ProBioQAV) to incorporate such mechanisms alongside requirements for airline SAF usage. According to IATA, the approach would facilitate integration with international programs such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) while helping create a functioning SAF market. The association stressed that policy sequencing will be crucial, arguing that adequate SAF supply must be established before usage mandates take effect. “Brazil has many advantages both in terms of natural resources and vast experience that should give the country a world-leading role in SAF markets. The scale of Brazil’s potential is such that the economic rewards could be transformative. Applying tried and tested policies in the right order of sequence is necessary to achieve scale and the price reductions that come with it, but leapfrogging the building of supply chains and going straight for mandates will not. Aligning policies with global standards and programs such as CORSIA will allow Brazil to make the most of its great potential,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist. IATA's assessment underscores Brazil’s emerging role in the global sustainable aviation fuel sector, with the organization arguing that coordinated investment, supportive policy frameworks and industry collaboration could enable the country to become one of the world's most important SAF producers while supporting aviation's long-term decarbonisation goals.

Almaty, Kazakhstan: A SWISS International Air Lines Airbus A350 operating flight LX123 from Seoul Incheon to Zurich made an emergency diversion to Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 6 after the co-pilot suffered a medical emergency while the aircraft was cruising over Kazakhstan. According to the airline’s official statement, the incident occurred approximately six hours into the long-haul flight when the co-pilot became unwell during the journey. The Airbus A350-941, registered HB-IFB, was carrying 227 passengers and 14 crew members at the time. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft squawking transponder code 7700, the international emergency signal used to indicate a general emergency before diverting south toward Almaty International Airport. The aircraft landed safely shortly before 1 p.m. local time on May 6. SWISS confirmed that three doctors travelling onboard assisted the crew by providing immediate medical aid to the co-pilot during the diversion. Based on their recommendation, the operating crew decided to divert to Almaty to ensure the pilot received urgent medical attention as quickly as possible. Emergency medical teams were waiting when the aircraft arrived in Almaty. The co-pilot was subsequently transported to a local hospital accompanied by another crew member. Airport authorities reported that the pilot was taken to Almaty City Hospital No. 4 for further examination and treatment. Local reports also referenced a suspected acute abdominal condition, though SWISS has not officially confirmed the nature of the medical issue. Following the unscheduled landing, passengers and crew were accommodated overnight in hotels in Almaty while the airline arranged for an additional pilot to be flown in. SWISS stated that the flight could not continue immediately because aviation regulations require a specifically qualified first officer to occupy the co-pilot’s right-hand seat. The airline also noted that crew duty-time limitations would have been exceeded if the flight had continued without additional crew support. In its statement, the airline said the “health and wellbeing” of its colleague remained the top priority while acknowledging the disruption caused to passengers’ travel plans. The carrier added that teams were working to support affected travellers and coordinate the continuation of the journey to Zurich.

Belo Horizonte, Brazil: A small twin-engine aircraft crashed into a residential building in the Silveira neighbourhood of Belo Horizonte on Monday, killing three of the five people onboard and injuring two others, according to Brazilian authorities. The aircraft, identified as an Embraer EMB-721C, departed from Pampulha Airport at approximately 12:16 p.m. local time, bound for São Paulo. Within minutes of takeoff, the aircraft began experiencing difficulties and remained airborne for only a short duration before losing altitude. It ultimately crashed around 12:25 p.m. into a three-storey residential building, striking a stairwell area between floors, which helped prevent casualties among residents. Authorities confirmed that three occupants died in the crash. The victims include pilot Wellington Oliveira and passenger Fernando Moreira Souto, who was the son of the mayor of Jequitinhonha. Souto was initially rescued in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The co-pilot also died, though their identity has not been officially released in primary reports. Two other passengers survived the crash and were taken to hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition. Eyewitness accounts and initial footage indicate that the aircraft appeared to be circling and descending abnormally before impact, suggesting a possible loss of power or control shortly after departure. Despite the direct collision with the building, no residents on the ground were injured, and structural damage was limited, avoiding a potentially larger disaster. Emergency responders, including firefighters, medical teams and civil defence personnel, reached the crash site within minutes. Residents of the building were evacuated as a precaution while authorities secured the area and assisted survivors. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Brazil’s Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA), along with regional unit SERIPA III and the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, have launched a formal probe. Investigators are examining possible mechanical issues, operational factors and the aircraft’s condition. In response to the incident, officials in Jequitinhonha declared three days of mourning following the death of Fernando Moreira Souto. Authorities have not yet released a final determination on what led to the crash, and investigations are ongoing.

The airline halted flying in late April 2026, with its final operated service landing safely at London Stansted Airport before management confirmed the shutdown. Shortly thereafter, the carrier surrendered its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, formally ending its ability to operate commercial flights. Industry reports indicate that the airline’s collapse followed a sustained period of financial strain. Ascend Airways had reportedly been incurring losses of approximately £3 million per month, driven by high fixed operating costs and limited aircraft utilisation. The situation worsened after the carrier failed to secure sufficient ACMI contracts for the upcoming Summer 2026 season, a critical revenue period for wet-lease operators. The ACMI business model, which depends heavily on short-term leasing agreements with other airlines, left Ascend particularly exposed to fluctuations in demand. Without confirmed contracts, aircraft remained underutilised while lease and maintenance costs continued to accrue. Rising jet fuel prices, influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions, further compounded the airline’s financial difficulties. As a UK AOC holder, Ascend also faced higher regulatory and operational costs compared to competitors operating under European Union jurisdictions. Additional pressure came from reported technical issues affecting Boeing 737 MAX aircraft powered by CFM LEAP engines. These issues reduced fleet availability and increased maintenance burdens at a time when operational reliability was critical to securing contracts. At the time of its closure, Ascend Airways operated a fleet of seven aircraft, comprising six Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets and one Boeing 737-800. Following the liquidation, aircraft are being returned to lessors. The collapse has affected approximately 160 employees, including flight crew and operational staff, with job losses expected across the organisation. Ascend Airways was part of Avia Solutions Group, a Lithuania-based aviation services group that operates multiple ACMI and charter airlines worldwide. The group has been expanding its footprint globally, including the development of a separate Malaysian-based affiliate, though this entity is distinct from the UK airline that has now ceased operations. The airline’s collapse reflects wider pressures within the ACMI sector. An oversupply of wet-lease capacity, combined with rising costs and tightening margins, has made it increasingly difficult for smaller operators to remain viable.

Newark, United States: A United Airlines widebody aircraft struck a light pole and a tractor-trailer during its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport in the United States on Sunday, raising fresh safety concerns over low-altitude approaches above busy highway infrastructure. The incident involved United Airlines Flight 169, a Boeing 767-400 operating from Venice, Italy, which made contact with roadside infrastructure while descending toward Runway 29 at approximately 2:00 p.m. local time on May 3, 2026. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local authorities, the aircraft’s landing gear and underside struck a light pole and a tractor-trailer traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike, a major highway that runs adjacent to the airport’s approach path. The impact caused the light pole to collapse, with debris subsequently striking a passing Jeep on the roadway. Despite the mid-air contact with ground objects, the aircraft continued its approach and landed safely, later taxiing to the gate without further incident. All 221 passengers and 10 crew members onboard were unharmed, airline officials confirmed.
