It highlighted that increasing passenger volumes, geopolitical uncertainty, climate pressures, and operational constraints are creating a need for coordinated policy reform at the global level. The organisation stressed that without timely intervention, capacity bottlenecks and inefficiencies could emerge across major airport systems worldwide. At the core of the Policy Agenda 2030 is a call to reposition airports as strategic economic assets rather than purely infrastructure operators. ACI World emphasised that airports play a critical role in driving trade, tourism, investment, and employment, and therefore require governance models that reflect their broader economic importance. The organisation urged governments to adopt policies that enable airports to operate with greater flexibility, competitiveness, and financial sustainability. The framework also places strong focus on airport capacity expansion and operational efficiency. ACI World has called for modernised slot allocation systems, enhanced infrastructure development, and improved passenger facilitation processes to manage future traffic growth. It further highlighted the importance of workforce development and operational readiness as key enablers of efficient airport performance in the coming decade. Safety and security remain central to the agenda, with ACI World advocating for risk-based and globally harmonised regulatory frameworks. The organisation said aviation safety systems must continue to evolve in response to emerging operational challenges while maintaining high international standards and improving efficiency across airport operations. Sustainability is another major pillar of the Policy Agenda 2030. ACI World stressed the need for coordinated global action to address aviation emissions and climate resilience. It called for policies that support decarbonisation while ensuring airports can continue to expand capacity to meet growing demand. The organisation highlighted the role of airports as key contributors to climate action through infrastructure adaptation and long-term environmental planning. ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci underscored that aviation policy must evolve in line with industry growth, stating that airports should be recognised as strategic national infrastructure assets. He noted that enabling policy environments are essential for airports to deliver increased connectivity, economic value, and sustainable development outcomes. The Policy Agenda 2030 aligns with ACI World’s broader strategic direction for 2025–2030 and complements global aviation planning frameworks, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) long-term strategy toward 2050. The organisation said coordinated action between governments, regulators, and industry stakeholders will be critical to ensuring the aviation sector can support future economic growth and global connectivity.

According to the airline’s official statement, the incident occurred approximately six hours into the long-haul flight when the co-pilot became unwell during the journey. The Airbus A350-941, registered HB-IFB, was carrying 227 passengers and 14 crew members at the time. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft squawking transponder code 7700, the international emergency signal used to indicate a general emergency before diverting south toward Almaty International Airport. The aircraft landed safely shortly before 1 p.m. local time on May 6. SWISS confirmed that three doctors travelling onboard assisted the crew by providing immediate medical aid to the co-pilot during the diversion. Based on their recommendation, the operating crew decided to divert to Almaty to ensure the pilot received urgent medical attention as quickly as possible. Emergency medical teams were waiting when the aircraft arrived in Almaty. The co-pilot was subsequently transported to a local hospital accompanied by another crew member. Airport authorities reported that the pilot was taken to Almaty City Hospital No. 4 for further examination and treatment. Local reports also referenced a suspected acute abdominal condition, though SWISS has not officially confirmed the nature of the medical issue. Following the unscheduled landing, passengers and crew were accommodated overnight in hotels in Almaty while the airline arranged for an additional pilot to be flown in. SWISS stated that the flight could not continue immediately because aviation regulations require a specifically qualified first officer to occupy the co-pilot’s right-hand seat. The airline also noted that crew duty-time limitations would have been exceeded if the flight had continued without additional crew support. In its statement, the airline said the “health and wellbeing” of its colleague remained the top priority while acknowledging the disruption caused to passengers’ travel plans. The aircraft, identified as an Embraer EMB-721C, departed from Pampulha Airport at approximately 12:16 p.m. local time, bound for São Paulo. Within minutes of takeoff, the aircraft began experiencing difficulties and remained airborne for only a short duration before losing altitude. It ultimately crashed around 12:25 p.m. into a three-storey residential building, striking a stairwell area between floors, which helped prevent casualties among residents. Authorities confirmed that three occupants died in the crash. The victims include pilot Wellington Oliveira and passenger Fernando Moreira Souto, who was the son of the mayor of Jequitinhonha. Souto was initially rescued in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The co-pilot also died, though their identity has not been officially released in primary reports. Two other passengers survived the crash and were taken to hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
