The agreement, valued at approximately €1.4 billion ($1.624 billion USD), was formally concluded on 16 April 2026, according to European procurement records published through the EU’s official tender database. The programme also includes long-term support and logistics services that will extend across the aircraft’s operational lifecycle. The new Airbus A330 MRTT fleet will replace Italy’s existing Boeing KC-767A tanker aircraft, which have been in service since 2011. The decision follows several years of reassessment within the Italian Ministry of Defence regarding future tanker requirements. Italy had earlier explored the possibility of acquiring Boeing’s KC-46 Pegasus as a replacement platform, but the plan was later shelved, leading to a renewed competitive procurement process in which Airbus emerged as the selected provider. The A330 MRTT is based on the Airbus A330-200 commercial airframe and is widely regarded as one of the most capable multi-role tanker platforms in operational service. The aircraft is designed to perform air-to-air refuelling using both boom and hose-and-drogue systems, while also offering strategic transport, cargo movement, and aeromedical evacuation capabilities. With a range of approximately 16,000 kilometres, the aircraft significantly enhances long-range deployment capacity for both national and NATO operations. For Italy, the acquisition is expected to substantially strengthen support for its modern fighter fleet, including Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The new tankers will improve operational endurance, extend mission range, and enhance interoperability with allied air forces. Italy’s participation in NATO operations is also expected to be reinforced, as several alliance members already operate or are transitioning to the A330 MRTT platform, enabling shared training, logistics, and operational compatibility. The procurement also reflects a broader strategic and industrial shift toward European defence manufacturing. Italy’s previous tanker fleet, the Boeing KC-767A, represented a U.S.-origin platform, and early discussions had included potential acquisition of the KC-46 Pegasus. However, evolving operational assessments and procurement reviews ultimately led to a shift in favour of Airbus, strengthening Europe’s defence industrial base and reducing reliance on non-European suppliers for critical aerial refuelling capability. Deliveries of the six aircraft are expected to take place in phases over the coming years, with Airbus managing production and conversion activities through its established facilities in Spain. The programme is anticipated to span nearly a decade, including integration, testing, and full operational readiness. Industry reports also suggest that Airbus is expanding its MRTT conversion capacity to meet growing European and NATO demand for the platform. With this order, Italy joins a growing list of international operators of the Airbus 330 MRTT, a platform that has become central to NATO’s air-to-air refuelling strategy and multinational tanker interoperability initiatives. The aircraft’s widespread adoption across allied air forces reflects its role as a standardised solution for strategic air mobility and extended air operations.

Almaty, Kazakhstan: A SWISS International Air Lines Airbus A350 operating flight LX123 from Seoul Incheon to Zurich made an emergency diversion to Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 6 after the co-pilot suffered a medical emergency while the aircraft was cruising over Kazakhstan. According to the airline’s official statement, the incident occurred approximately six hours into the long-haul flight when the co-pilot became unwell during the journey. The Airbus A350-941, registered HB-IFB, was carrying 227 passengers and 14 crew members at the time. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft squawking transponder code 7700, the international emergency signal used to indicate a general emergency before diverting south toward Almaty International Airport. The aircraft landed safely shortly before 1 p.m. local time on May 6. SWISS confirmed that three doctors travelling onboard assisted the crew by providing immediate medical aid to the co-pilot during the diversion. Based on their recommendation, the operating crew decided to divert to Almaty to ensure the pilot received urgent medical attention as quickly as possible. Emergency medical teams were waiting when the aircraft arrived in Almaty. The co-pilot was subsequently transported to a local hospital accompanied by another crew member. Airport authorities reported that the pilot was taken to Almaty City Hospital No. 4 for further examination and treatment. Local reports also referenced a suspected acute abdominal condition, though SWISS has not officially confirmed the nature of the medical issue. Following the unscheduled landing, passengers and crew were accommodated overnight in hotels in Almaty while the airline arranged for an additional pilot to be flown in. SWISS stated that the flight could not continue immediately because aviation regulations require a specifically qualified first officer to occupy the co-pilot’s right-hand seat. The airline also noted that crew duty-time limitations would have been exceeded if the flight had continued without additional crew support. In its statement, the airline said the “health and wellbeing” of its colleague remained the top priority while acknowledging the disruption caused to passengers’ travel plans. The carrier added that teams were working to support affected travellers and coordinate the continuation of the journey to Zurich.

The aircraft, identified as an Embraer EMB-721C, departed from Pampulha Airport at approximately 12:16 p.m. local time, bound for São Paulo. Within minutes of takeoff, the aircraft began experiencing difficulties and remained airborne for only a short duration before losing altitude. It ultimately crashed around 12:25 p.m. into a three-storey residential building, striking a stairwell area between floors, which helped prevent casualties among residents. Authorities confirmed that three occupants died in the crash. The victims include pilot Wellington Oliveira and passenger Fernando Moreira Souto, who was the son of the mayor of Jequitinhonha. Souto was initially rescued in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The co-pilot also died, though their identity has not been officially released in primary reports. Two other passengers survived the crash and were taken to hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition. At the time of its closure, Ascend Airways operated a fleet of seven aircraft, comprising six Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets and one Boeing 737-800. Following the liquidation, aircraft are being returned to lessors. The collapse has affected approximately 160 employees, including flight crew and operational staff, with job losses expected across the organisation. Ascend Airways was part of Avia Solutions Group, a Lithuania-based aviation services group that operates multiple ACMI and charter airlines worldwide.
