Dublin, Ireland: The chief executive of Ryanair has warned that a prolonged Iran conflict could push several European airlines into bankruptcy, as surging jet fuel prices and supply uncertainty begin to strain the aviation industry globally. Michael O’Leary said that “two or three European airlines could go bankrupt” by late 2026 if oil prices remain elevated, specifically naming Wizz Air and airBaltic among the most vulnerable carriers. The warning comes amid a sharp escalation in fuel costs following the Iran war, which has disrupted global energy markets and constrained supply routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. Jet fuel prices have nearly doubled since the conflict began, rising from around $74 per barrel to approximately $150, placing significant financial pressure on airlines. Industry-wide, prices have surged by nearly 84% since late February, forcing airlines to reassess operations, pricing, and capacity plans. O’Leary said the crisis has already added about $50 million to Ryanair’s fuel bill in April alone and could increase annual costs by as much as $600 million if current price levels persist. While Ryanair has mitigated some impact by hedging around 80% of its fuel at $67 per barrel through 2027, the remaining exposure to market prices continues to weigh on costs. Beyond pricing, airline executives remain concerned about potential fuel shortages if the conflict continues to disrupt supply chains. O’Leary warned that up to 10-20% of fuel supply could be at risk, particularly from June onward, raising the possibility of flight disruptions if airports face shortages. However, more recent industry updates suggest that immediate supply risks may be easing. Fuel suppliers have indicated that Europe is unlikely to face shortages through at least June, improving short-term outlooks. Despite this, uncertainty remains high, with executives acknowledging limited visibility on how long the conflict and its impact on fuel logistics will continue. Carriers across Europe have already begun responding to the crisis by raising fares, reducing capacity, and adjusting schedules. Major airline groups including Air France-KLM, IAG, and Lufthansa have implemented fare increases and flight cuts to offset rising fuel costs. At the same time, some low-cost carriers are taking a different approach. Ryanair expects to lower fares to stimulate demand, leveraging its fuel hedging advantage, while maintaining profitability. The broader industry continues to show resilience, with global capacity still slightly above 2025 levels despite mounting cost pressures. The conflict has also begun to influence passenger behaviour, with uncertainty delaying travel bookings. Executives at Wizz Air report a “wait-and-see” trend among customers, particularly for peak summer travel, although underlying demand remains strong. The airline expects a €50 million financial impact from the crisis but maintains that it has sufficient liquidity and hedging strategies in place to manage the situation. Wizz Air has strongly rejected claims that it faces a risk of collapse, calling such suggestions unfounded and emphasising its financial strength, fuel hedging, and operational stability. CEO József Váradi stated that the airline does not expect to run out of fuel, noting that global supply chains are adapting, with fuel shipments being redirected from alternative markets such as the United States. He also highlighted that Wizz Air has hedged approximately 70% of its fuel needs and plans to expand capacity during the summer season, underscoring confidence in continued operations. The crisis extends beyond airlines to the wider aviation ecosystem. Industry bodies have warned that smaller regional airports could face an “existential threat” if rising fuel costs and potential cancellations reduce traffic further. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions and airspace disruptions have already reduced flight activity in parts of the Middle East by as much as 50%, adding further complexity to global airline operations.

The incident occurred on April 8, 2026, involving Air France Flight AF25, a Boeing 777-300ER scheduled to operate from Los Angeles to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had been cleared for departure from Runway 24L and had already begun its takeoff roll when the situation unfolded. Air traffic controllers abruptly cancelled the takeoff clearance after a Gulfstream G650ER business jet entered the same runway without authorization. The Gulfstream had just landed at LAX following a short flight from San Francisco and had been explicitly instructed to hold short of the runway, which the pilot acknowledged before proceeding past the hold line. As the Air France aircraft accelerated, runway status lights turned red, warning of a potential conflict. The flight crew immediately initiated a rejected takeoff (RTO) procedure, applying heavy braking while still under power. Air traffic control recordings captured the urgency of the moment, with controllers informing the Air France crew that the Gulfstream had crossed onto the runway and into their path. Mexico City, Mexico: In a landmark ruling that reshapes the narrative of one of Cuba’s deadliest aviation disasters, a Mexican court has held charter airline Aerolíneas Damojh (Global Air) responsible for the 2018 crash of a Boeing 737 in Havana, concluding that the aircraft suffered from severe maintenance failures and “should never have flown.” The decision, based on court documents dated March 31 and reviewed by multiple international outlets, marks a significant legal departure from earlier findings that attributed the accident primarily to pilot error. An independent expert assessment presented during proceedings determined that the crash of Cubana de Aviación Flight 0972 was an “institutional accident” caused by systemic maintenance negligence. The report emphasized that the pilots were merely the “final line of defense” and were unable to prevent the catastrophe once critical failures had already developed. The judge accepted these findings and ruled that the aircraft’s operator, Global Air, bore responsibility for placing an unfit aircraft into service. The court ordered Global Air to pay USD 1.5 million in compensation to each of the families of the four Mexican crew members who initiated the lawsuit. Notably, the airline failed to appear in court and was tried in absentia, while the aircraft’s insurer also named in the case was ultimately cleared of financial liability. The aircraft was owned and operated by Global Air, a Mexican charter airline, and was leased to Cuba’s state carrier Cubana de Aviación under a wet lease agreement. The Mexican ruling directly contradicts Cuba’s 2019 official investigation, which attributed the crash primarily to pilot error and weight miscalculation, citing deficiencies in crew performance and operational procedures. In contrast, the Mexican court concluded that chronic maintenance deficiencies and systemic oversight failures were the root cause, reframing the accident as a broader organizational failure rather than an isolated human error. Global Air had faced prior operational scrutiny in Mexico, including temporary suspension following the crash as authorities examined its compliance with safety regulations. Reports cited during the case highlighted a history of technical issues and complaints, raising questions about the aircraft’s airworthiness long before the accident occurred. Beyond the initial lawsuit, broader legal proceedings are underway. Lawyers representing victims confirmed that: A class-action civil lawsuit covering all victims is in progress A criminal complaint for homicide has been filed against the airline and responsible parties However, the criminal investigation in Mexico has reportedly stalled due to limited cooperation from Cuban authorities. Samuel González, counsel for the victims’ families, described the judgment as a hard-fought and “groundbreaking” decision for Mexico. He said the ruling reinforces early admissions made in Havana by the airline’s own head of maintenance, who acknowledged to relatives that the aircraft should not have been cleared for operation. “That aircraft operated for nearly a decade without proper maintenance,” González said. “The crash occurred in Cuba, but the risk was universal.” Efforts to reach representatives of the airline for comment were unsuccessful. González also indicated that the carrier may be moving toward bankruptcy proceedings, warning that any attempt to misuse the process would be legally challenged.
