The flight, operating as QP1503 and registered as VT-YAJ, was carrying a total of 194 passengers and crew members onboard when the incident occurred. According to multiple media reports and airport officials, the aircraft was initially unable to land at Bhubaneswar due to unfavorable weather conditions. The flight was subsequently diverted to Lucknow at approximately 8:40 PM local time. While approaching Lucknow, the crew reportedly issued a “PAN PAN” call to Air Traffic Control (ATC) at around 9:02 PM after fuel levels became critically low during the extended diversion. In aviation terminology, a “PAN PAN” declaration indicates an urgent situation requiring priority assistance, though it is considered less severe than a “MAYDAY” distress call. The pilot-in-command requested priority handling and a clear approach to ensure the aircraft could land safely in a single attempt amid fuel constraints. Following the alert, Lucknow ATC declared a full emergency and immediately activated standard emergency response procedures. Crash fire tenders and emergency response teams were positioned at designated points along Runway 09 by approximately 9:04 PM as a precautionary measure. The aircraft landed safely at Lucknow International Airport at around 9:21 PM. Shortly after touchdown, the flight crew informed ATC that all aircraft operations were normal and that no emergency assistance was required. Authorities subsequently withdrew the full emergency status at approximately 9:30 PM. Airport officials confirmed that all emergency and safety protocols were executed as per standard operating procedures and that the situation was handled without incident. No injuries to passengers or crew were reported. According to reports, three passengers deboarded the aircraft in Lucknow before the flight later resumed its journey to Bhubaneswar. In an official statement, Akasa Air confirmed that the diversion was caused by adverse weather conditions at Bhubaneswar and stated that the crew followed all established operational and safety procedures throughout the incident. “Akasa Air flight QP 1503 operating from Bengaluru to Bhubaneswar on 27 May 2026 was diverted to Lucknow due to adverse weather conditions, which were not favourable for landing. The pilot followed all established operational and safety protocols in line with standard procedures,” the airline said. The carrier further stated that the flight later departed Lucknow and landed safely in Bhubaneswar at 00:02 hrs on May 28. “At Akasa Air, the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority. We regret the inconvenience caused due to circumstances beyond our control and appreciate our passengers’ understanding,” the airline added.

According to airline confirmation, the flight was scheduled to land in Hubballi around 4:30 pm but encountered deteriorating weather conditions during descent. The aircraft reportedly circled the Hubballi airspace for an extended period as pilots assessed landing feasibility. When conditions failed to improve, the crew diverted the flight to Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, where it landed safely. Passengers onboard experienced significant anxiety during the prolonged airborne phase, with reports and visual accounts suggesting distress inside the cabin as the aircraft continued holding over the region. Some passengers reportedly expressed concern over the extended circling, while cabin crew maintained communication and reassured passengers throughout the flight. Despite the tense situation, no medical emergencies or injuries were reported. All 22 passengers were reported safe. Fly91, in its official statement, categorically denied any technical malfunction and clarified that the diversion was carried out strictly due to weather-related safety concerns. Scheduled to depart at around 2:05 AM, the flight took off at approximately 2:15 AM but encountered technical issues within minutes of departure, forcing a return to the origin airport by around 2:35 AM. According to officials familiar with the development, one of the aircraft’s engines identified as engine number 2 stalled shortly after takeoff. The pilots subsequently issued a “PAN PAN” call, an internationally recognized radio signal indicating an urgent situation that requires priority handling but is not immediately life-threatening. Passengers onboard reported hearing a loud noise during the climb and observed sparks emanating from the affected engine. The regulator has warned the airline that failure to respond fully within one week could trigger regulatory action affecting its Dreamliner operations. Air India flight AI132, operating a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered VT-ANX, departed Heathrow for Bengaluru after pilots noted irregular behaviour with a fuel control switch, a vital cockpit control that regulates fuel flow to the engines. During engine start, one of the two fuel control switches did not remain positively latched in the “RUN” position on the first two attempts before stabilising on the third. The flight continued without in-air issues and landed in Bengaluru. Upon arrival, the crew filed a defect report citing the anomaly, and the aircraft was grounded for inspection on February 2. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has taken the step of demanding a formal response from Air India, including: A comprehensive account of pre-flight maintenance actions taken before departure, A root-cause analysis of the fuel control switch event, A preventive action plan to reduce the risk of recurrence across Air India’s Dreamliner fleet, which comprises 33 aircraft. In official correspondence, the CAA emphasised that regulators routinely seek detailed explanations following incidents affecting safety-critical components, particularly when an aircraft departs with a potential defect. Air India said it conducted precautionary re-inspections of fuel control switches across its Boeing 787 fleet after the incident and reported no issues found during these checks. The airline acknowledged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) oversight and said it will comply with the regulator’s guidance to circulate Boeing’s recommended operating procedures for the switches to all flight crews. India’s DGCA also issued a clarification, stating that post-flight inspections determined the fuel switches were serviceable and functioning normally. According to the regulator, the switch may move if light pressure is applied in an incorrect direction, but its design does not indicate a defect when used according to approved procedures. The DGCA advised Air India to reinforce correct switch handling among pilots. Fuel control switches are crucial for aircraft safety. They allow pilots to start and shut down engines and are designed with locking mechanisms to prevent unintended movement. This category of component has been under heightened scrutiny following the June 2025 crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 in Ahmedabad, where preliminary investigation reports indicated fuel control switches played a role in dual-engine power loss shortly after takeoff. That accident, which resulted in significant loss of life, triggered industry-wide inspections and close regulatory observation of Boeing 787 systems. Though the final accident report remains pending, aviation authorities worldwide have been monitoring similar technical aspects, including fuel system controls, in current operations. Air India faces a deadline to submit its response to the UK CAA within one week of the February 4 notice. The airline has stressed safety as its utmost priority and reiterated cooperation with international regulators and Boeing in evaluating the matter.

Bangalore, India: In a major milestone for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) successfully carried out the maiden flight of the first series-production HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft (tail number TH-4001) from its Bengaluru facility on Friday. The aircraft, built under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, marks the transition of the HTT-40 programme from development to full-scale production. According to HAL, the flight lasted approximately 40 minutes and validated the aircraft’s performance parameters, flight controls, and avionics systems. “This achievement reflects our capability to design, develop, test, and now produce a world-class basic trainer entirely within India,” said HAL Chairman and Managing Director C.B. Ananthakrishnan. “The HTT-40 will soon play a key role in shaping the next generation of Indian Air Force pilots.” The HTT-40 (Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40) is a tandem-seat, fully aerobatic turboprop aircraft designed for ab-initio pilot training. The trainer can perform a range of operations including basic flying, aerobatics, instrument training, and night sorties. Unlike earlier prototypes, the newly flown TH-4001 represents a production-standard version that will lead HAL’s delivery commitments to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The aircraft is powered by a Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprop engine and features a modern glass cockpit, zero-zero ejection seats, hot refuelling capability, and advanced avionics such as VOR/ILS, TACAN, and IFF. HAL officials confirmed that the indigenous content of the HTT-40 currently stands at around 56%, with plans to push it beyond 60% as local suppliers scale up production. The Indian Air Force has placed an order for 70 HTT-40 aircraft, valued at approximately ₹6,800 crore. Deliveries were initially targeted for late 2025 but were delayed due to supply chain constraints, particularly the delayed shipment of Honeywell engines. HAL now expects the first batch of production aircraft to be delivered to the IAF by February 2026, after completion of flight certification and quality assurance trials. A second production line at HAL’s Nashik division has also been inaugurated to accelerate output and meet the IAF’s requirements. The HTT-40 will replace the ageing HPT-32 Deepak trainers that were grounded in 2009 following safety issues. With its modern systems and improved safety standards, the aircraft will serve as the backbone of the IAF’s basic flight training programme, bridging a crucial capability gap in pilot induction.
