Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD), part of the M42 network, has partnered with Archer Aviation Inc. to develop the UAE’s first hospital-based vertiport, paving the way for next-generation urban air mobility in the healthcare sector. The announcement was made through Archer’s official investor release and verified by eVTOL Insights. According to the statement, the vertiport will be established under the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA) recently introduced hybrid conversion framework, which allows existing helipads to be upgraded for dual operations supporting both traditional helicopters and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The initiative will see Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s current helipad transformed into a hybrid vertiport, facilitating advanced aerial logistics such as, Rapid medical transport, including time-critical organ delivery for transplants, Non-emergency patient transfers between medical facilities and visitor and staff transport, reducing ground traffic and emissions. Archer will deploy its Midnight eVTOL aircraft, a four-passenger electric aircraft designed for short-distance urban air mobility missions. The Midnight aircraft produces significantly lower noise levels and zero in-flight emissions, aligning with the UAE’s sustainability goals and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s environmental responsibility framework. “Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi continues to explore innovative solutions that enhance patient care and sustainability,” said Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “Integrating vertiport operations into our medical transport system will expand access to high-quality care while advancing Abu Dhabi’s leadership in future mobility.” Bryan Bernhard, Chief Growth & Infrastructure Officer at Archer Aviation, added, “This partnership demonstrates how advanced air mobility can transform essential services. Our goal is to make safe, efficient, and sustainable aerial transport a practical reality for healthcare.” The hospital-based vertiport is part of Archer’s broader Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) roadmap for the UAE, following its earlier approval for a hybrid vertiport at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal. Both initiatives support the Emirate’s ambition to establish a connected network of vertiports that link key transport hubs, business districts, and critical infrastructure such as hospitals. While the companies have not yet disclosed a construction timeline or operational date, the project remains under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) phase. Detailed engineering plans, regulatory approvals, and site-specific assessments will follow in collaboration with the GCAA, Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), and Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). Once operational, the vertiport will serve as a model for other medical facilities across the UAE and the wider GCC region, signaling the integration of clean aviation technology into healthcare logistics.

The passenger has been identified as Tracy Barkhimer, 61, of White Salmon, Washington. According to the Boise Police Department, Barkhimer reportedly exhibited erratic and aggressive behavior mid-flight, leading the crew to attempt to calm her. When their efforts failed, she allegedly struck two airline employees. The flight crew successfully restrained Barkhimer, and the captain diverted the aircraft to Boise Airport as a precautionary measure. Upon landing, police officers met with the crew members, who filed citizen’s arrest affidavits against Barkhimer. She was taken into custody without incident and booked into Ada County Jail on two misdemeanor battery charges. Barkhimer was later released on a $600 bond, with her next court date scheduled for early November. Alaska Airlines confirmed that Barkhimer has been banned from future flights and emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for violence toward airline staff. This action comes after an incident in which the RAT deployed automatically on one of the airline’s aircraft during landing in Birmingham, UK. Boeing has also requested that other 787 operators report any similar occurrences worldwide. The DGCA has specifically instructed Air India to verify the stowage integrity of the RAT in all aircraft where the Power Conditioning Module (PCM) was recently replaced. The Ram Air Turbine serves as an emergency backup system, providing hydraulic and electrical power if the aircraft’s main engines fail. It operates by using the aircraft’s forward motion to spin a small turbine that extends from the fuselage underside. This ensures critical flight control systems and avionics remain operational during emergencies, such as dual-engine failures or complete electrical system loss. Notably, the RAT deployed during the June 2025 crash of Air India flight AI171 after a dual-engine flameout at Ahmedabad, resulting in the loss of 260 lives. The recent directive stems from an October 4, 2025, incident involving Air India flight AI117, flying from Amritsar (ATQ) to Birmingham (BHX), where the RAT deployed automatically at around 500 feet during descent. The aircraft landed safely, with all electrical and hydraulic systems reportedly functioning normally. According to the DGCA advisory, “Air India has been advised to review the work package of ‘D’ Check for the actions required in view of the change of PCM module, for any discrepancies.” The regulator noted that the RAT is rarely activated during routine operations and is typically reserved for critical failures, making any uncommanded deployment a serious concern. Air India confirmed that despite the unexpected RAT deployment, all onboard systems were stable throughout the flight. Following the incident, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) requested the DGCA to inspect the electrical systems on all Boeing 787s operating in India. In a letter, FIP President GS Randhawa highlighted that the Aircraft Health Monitoring (AHM) system had detected a fault in the Bus Power Control Unit (BPCU), which could have triggered the RAT deployment. The BPCU is essential for managing electrical power distribution, and any malfunction may activate backup systems. FIP emphasized that this incident points to potential systemic electrical vulnerabilities in the Boeing 787 and called for thorough inspections of all aircraft in the country. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated, “The DGCA is already on the job.
