France: Airbus has achieved a milestone by overtaking Boeing in total commercial aircraft deliveries, with its A320 family now recognized as the most-delivered jetliner. The milestone was reached as Airbus delivered its 12,260th A320, surpassing Boeing’s 737, which has completed 12,254 deliveries worldwide. According to aviation consultancy Cirium, by 1988, when Airbus began producing its A320, Boeing had already built a strong lead with around 1,500 of its iconic 737 jets delivered. After nearly four decades, Airbus has finally caught up, with the A320 series surpassing Boeing as the world’s most-delivered commercial airliner. The A320’s success reflects Airbus’s strong focus on the single-aisle market and its ability to meet global airline demand for fuel-efficient, short- and medium-haul aircraft. The A320neo family, in particular, has contributed to this growth with modern engines and cabin upgrades that appeal to carriers across the globe. Boeing, meanwhile, continues to contend with the repercussions of past setbacks. The 737 MAX program faced a 20-month grounding following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, significantly affecting production and delivery schedules. Combined with ongoing supply chain constraints, these factors have slowed Boeing’s progress relative to Airbus. The condition affects roughly 1 in 100,000 people worldwide and can lead to severe complications such as pericarditis, pneumonia, or macrophage activation syndrome, which carries a high mortality rate. The Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union has called for better care and support for sick flight attendants, urging EVA Air to ease sick leave rules. New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, India’s largest airline, for alleged lapses in its pilot training programme. The regulator found that the airline had used unqualified flight simulators to train pilots operating flights to Category C aerodromes, which are considered challenging due to terrain and approach conditions. According to the filing, the alleged non-compliance relates to the airline’s “failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes.” These airports include Calicut, Mangaluru, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl, Shimla, and international locations such as Kabul and Kathmandu. Aviation experts said that Category C airports require pilots to undergo specific simulator training replicating the topography and terrain of those airfields. “A qualified simulator must realistically depict the local geography, altitude, and approach pattern. Using a generic simulator can affect pilot readiness for critical airports like Leh or Calicut,” said Captain Anil S. Rao, President of the All India Pilots Association, in comments to The New Indian Express. In its statement, IndiGo said the fine would have no material impact on its operations and that it would contest the DGCA order before the appropriate appellate authority. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest training standards and operational safety,” the airline said. The DGCA’s order, dated September 26, 2025, stated that IndiGo failed to comply with simulator certification standards while conducting recurrent training for pilots assigned to operate at high-risk airports. The penalty was disclosed by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, in its filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. Chief Executive Carsten Spohr emphasized the need for structural change, noting that consolidation of overlapping functions and the use of digital tools will “make the group more competitive and resilient.” The announcement sparked criticism from German labor unions. The national carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Chai Eamsiri, confirmed the decision during a recent briefing, framing it as a move toward long-term efficiency and competitiveness. “We plan to eliminate First Class and replace it with enhanced Business Class cabins. It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline intends to streamline this into a three-class offering: Economy, Premium Economy, and an elevated Business Class. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. This new “Business Plus” concept is expected to include more spacious seating in the front row, enhanced privacy potentially with doors and upgraded amenities. While First Class is being phased out, Thai Airways aims to bridge the gap by enriching its Business Class service.The airline has already begun introducing premium amenities into Business, including caviar service on select routes. This aligns with a wider industry trend in which airlines consolidate luxury offerings into an expanded Business Class product rather than maintaining costly, limited-use First Class cabins. Passenger demand also played a decisive role.The modern Business Class products now rival traditional First Class in terms of comfort and privacy, making the higher-cost cabin less attractive and less financially sustainable for carriers. Thai Airways’ shift is also tied to its broader fleet renewal strategy. New aircraft on order, such as Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, will be delivered without First Class cabins. The carrier is also retrofitting its existing fleet to ensure product consistency. Maintaining First Class across just a handful of aircraft and routes such as Bangkok to London and Tokyo has become impractical. Rationalizing the fleet is expected to lower operating costs and simplify scheduling.
