New Delhi, India: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has granted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to two proposed airline operators Al Hind Air & FlyExpress in a strategic move aimed at expanding competition in India’s domestic aviation market following recent operational turmoil involving market‑leader IndiGo. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said in a social media post that the ministry has met with representatives from three emerging carriers Shankh Air, Al Hind Air and FlyExpress over the past week as part of efforts to encourage new entrants to the sector. While Shankh Air had already received its regulatory clearance earlier, both Al Hind Air and FlyExpress secured their NOCs this week. Al Hind Air is backed by Kerala’s Alhind Group, and FlyExpress is a Hyderabad‑based enterprise traditionally focused on courier and cargo operations. Shankh Air’s proposed business plan includes connecting major cities within Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra and Gorakhpur, with affordable air connectivity options. The government’s approvals come amid heightened scrutiny of India’s aviation market structure. Earlier this month, IndiGo’s failure to fully adapt to new crew rostering regulations triggered the cancellation of thousands of flights, stranding thousands of passengers. Industry analysts and officials have called for greater competition to prevent future systemic shocks. The Civil Aviation Ministry has highlighted existing schemes such as UDAN as instrumental in enabling smaller regional players including Star Air, India One Air and Fly91 to expand connectivity, while stressing there is substantial scope for further growth in what is one of the world’s fastest‑growing aviation markets. In the aftermath of IndiGo’s operational disruption, regulators have initiated multiple reviews. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken cognisance of complaints alleging antitrust violations by the airline, which holds a dominant market share. The initial assessment could lead to a detailed investigation if evidence of market abuse is found. IndiGo’s operations, which stabilised in mid‑December with restoration to roughly 2,200 daily flights, are also under regulatory examination. Authorities have imposed temporary fare caps and ordered expedited refunds for affected passengers.   While the approvals for Al Hind Air and FlyExpress signal a policy pivot towards diversification, aviation experts caution that long‑term viability for new carriers hinges on tackling structural challenges such as high operating costs, fuel taxation, and aircraft acquisition bottlenecks. The government’s move to issue NOCs to new airlines reflects a broader strategy to build resilience in India’s air transport sector by reducing over‑dependence on a small number of carriers and enhancing choices for millions of domestic flyers.

Doha, Qatar: Qatar Airways has surpassed a key technological milestone, equipping more than 100 widebody aircraft with SpaceX Starlink satellite internet. The rollout marks one of the fastest deployments of next-generation in-flight connectivity in the global aviation sector. The airline confirmed the milestone in an official statement, noting that installations are progressing “ahead of schedule” across its long-haul fleet. The achievement places Qatar Airways among the world’s leaders in satellite-based onboard Wi-Fi adoption. According to the carrier, more than 30,000 flights have already operated with Starlink connectivity since the first installation in October 2024, offering uninterrupted gate-to-gate high-speed internet across six continents. Over 50 percent of Qatar Airways’ widebody fleet is now equipped, with the Boeing 777 programme fully completed and work on the Airbus A350 fleet advancing rapidly. Executives say the project is being executed at “record speed,” underscoring a strategic push to elevate Qatar Airways’ premium long-haul passenger experience. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said the airline is intensifying installation efforts, adding that the programme is “an immediate priority rather than a future ambition.” He highlighted that the airline is now operating up to 200 daily flights with Starlink connectivity. Starlink-equipped aircraft are delivering internet speeds of up to 500 Mbps on Boeing 777s, enabling live streaming, video calls, online gaming, and high-bandwidth work applications. The service remains free for all passengers, regardless of cabin class, an uncommon offer among major global airlines. The carrier says the onboard speeds outperform many home internet connections and have significantly expanded digital access for long-haul travellers. Qatar Airways aims to complete Starlink installation across its entire widebody fleet by the end of the year. The retrofit effort covers aircraft serving more than 170 destinations, making the upgraded connectivity available on a large share of the airline’s global network. Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Flydubai has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus to acquire 150 A321neo aircraft, representing the airline’s first major commitment to Airbus and ending its historic reliance on Boeing for narrow-body jets. The MoU was announced during the Dubai Airshow 2025, highlighting flydubai’s strategic growth plans aligned with Dubai’s long-term economic vision. The signing ceremony included Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, and Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer. Sheikh Ahmed described the MoU as a “landmark” agreement that goes beyond fleet expansion, underscoring flydubai’s role in supporting Dubai World Central (DWC), the emirate’s growing aviation hub. Until now, flydubai has operated an exclusively Boeing 737 fleet. The inclusion of Airbus A321neos marks a strategic diversification of its narrow-body fleet, providing more operational flexibility and positioning the airline to meet increasing demand on regional and international routes. Analysts note that diversifying suppliers reduces dependency risks and strengthens negotiating leverage. The agreement also includes 100 additional options and carries an estimated value of US$ 24 billion, emphasizing flydubai’s long-term commitment to fleet modernization. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2031, reflecting a measured, strategic expansion rather than immediate capacity growth. The A321neo is Airbus’ latest-generation narrow-body aircraft, equipped with advanced engines, Sharklets, and cabin innovations that deliver over 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared with previous-generation models. The aircraft also supports operations with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) today, with Airbus targeting full 100% SAF capability by 2030, reflecting the airline’s and manufacturer’s commitment to sustainable aviation. According to Ghaith Al Ghaith, flydubai’s CEO, the acquisition aligns with Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, aiming to strengthen connectivity across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, while supporting the emirate’s infrastructure and aviation growth objectives. The MoU represents a commercial breakthrough for Airbus, acquiring a customer historically loyal to Boeing. The deal reinforces Airbus’ presence in the Middle East, a region experiencing rapid growth in air travel. For Boeing, the shift signals increasing competitive pressure in the single-aisle segment, as airlines seek more fuel-efficient and flexible fleet options. The initiative, part of BA’s £7-billion transformation programme, promises “lightning-fast, reliable WiFi that feels like home” for every passenger in every cabin, according to the airline’s official announcement. The rollout will extend to both short-haul and long-haul aircraft, enabling gate-to-gate connectivity without usage charges or tier-based plans. The move positions British Airways among the first major global carriers to adopt Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network at scale. These satellites offer significantly lower latency and stronger performance compared with conventional aviation WiFi systems, aiming to remove the long-standing frustration of slow or unreliable inflight internet. Sydney, Australia: Australia’s domestic aviation sector is struggling to match seat supply with surging passenger demand, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warning that capacity remains below pre-pandemic levels despite a full recovery in travel volumes. According to the ACCC’s Domestic Airline Competition in Australia report released in August 2025, seat capacity in June was 2.8% lower than in June 2019, even though passenger numbers had fully recovered and, in some cases, exceeded pre-COVID benchmarks. In May 2025, Australian carriers transported 5.20 million domestic passengers, up 1.6% compared with May 2019. The mismatch between supply and demand is evident in the load factor, the proportion of available seats actually sold which rose to 80.7% in June 2025 from pre-pandemic averages of about 78%. The ACCC noted that the capacity shortfall has kept airfares elevated. Although jet fuel prices dropped by 12.3% year-on-year, average fares in June 2025 were still higher than the same month last year. The regulator attributed this to limited seating availability, which has reduced the scope for last-minute fare discounts, particularly on peak routes. “The lack of significant competition and constrained supply means consumers are seeing fewer low-fare options,” the ACCC said in its report. The sector has shown notable improvements in operational reliability. April 2025 recorded an on-time arrival rate of 82.4%, the highest in three years and above the long-term average of 80.7%. Cancellations have also remained low, averaging under 2.2% in April and May, with a slight uptick to 2.4% in June. Jetstar and Virgin Australia achieved the best punctuality and cancellation performance, while Qantas reported comparatively higher cancellation rates. The capacity lag stems from a combination of structural and market factors. The collapse of Tigerair in 2020 removed a substantial share of low-cost capacity from the market. New entrants such as Bonza have struggled to establish sustainable operations, and Rex’s expansion on trunk routes has been limited. Global supply chain disruptions and manufacturing delays have also constrained fleet expansion. Aircraft delivery backlogs, driven by production issues at major manufacturers, have delayed capacity growth plans for both Qantas and Virgin Australia. Qantas Group is in the process of receiving additional aircraft, including narrowbody jets redeployed from Jetstar Asia. Virgin Australia expects delivery of six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft by December 2025. However, much of the incoming fleet will replace older planes rather than significantly expand seating capacity. Industry analysts note that upcoming infrastructure developments could provide relief. Slot reforms at congested airports and the opening of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in 2026 are expected to improve access for both existing and new operators. The ACCC has repeatedly expressed concern over the high level of market concentration, with Qantas Group and Virgin Australia controlling more than 98% of the domestic market (The Australian, Aug. 12, 2025). The regulator has urged measures to encourage competition, warning that the duopoly limits consumer choice and pricing flexibility. While passenger demand has fully recovered from pandemic lows, Australia’s domestic aviation market continues to operate with constrained capacity. The ACCC expects gradual improvement as airlines take delivery of new aircraft and as infrastructure projects come online, but warns that pricing pressure may persist in the near term.
