Hyderabad, India: Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has become India’s first space-tech unicorn after raising $60 million in a major funding round led by Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, marking a defining moment for the country’s rapidly expanding private space sector. The funding round pushed the company’s valuation to approximately $1.1 billion, making it the first Indian private space startup to cross the unicorn threshold. The round saw participation from funds managed by BlackRock, founders of Greenko Group, Arkam Ventures, Playbook Partners, Shanghvi Family Office and several existing investors. With this latest infusion, Skyroot’s total funding has climbed to nearly $160 million since its founding in 2018. The company said the fresh capital will be used to increase launch frequency, expand manufacturing capacity, accelerate development of its heavier-lift Vikram-2 rocket and strengthen its commercial launch operations globally. Founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot emerged from Hyderabad’s growing deep-tech ecosystem and became one of the earliest startups incubated at T-Hub. The company was established shortly after the Indian government opened the space sector to private participation in 2020, enabling startups to access ISRO facilities and infrastructure. Skyroot later became the first private Indian company to formally sign an agreement with ISRO for testing and launch support. Skyroot first entered global headlines in November 2022 after successfully launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket to reach space. The suborbital mission, named “Mission Prarambh,” was launched from Sriharikota and reached an apogee of nearly 89.5 kilometres, establishing the company as a pioneer in India’s commercial launch industry. The company is now preparing for the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1, which is expected to become India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. Skyroot has positioned the Vikram series as low-cost, rapidly deployable launch systems designed primarily for the growing global small satellite market. According to the company, the Vikram rockets incorporate extensive use of carbon composite structures, modular architecture and 3D-printed engines to reduce manufacturing timelines and operational costs. Skyroot has repeatedly stated that its long-term objective is to make space launches as reliable, regular and affordable as commercial aviation. Sherpalo Ventures founder Ram Shriram, one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent early technology investors and an early Google backer, is expected to join Skyroot’s board following the investment. Sherpalo had previously invested in the company during earlier funding rounds as well. Skyroot’s rise also reflects Hyderabad’s emergence as a major aerospace and defence innovation hub. Telangana leaders, including former IT minister KT Rama Rao, described the milestone as a validation of the state’s long-term focus on innovation infrastructure and deep-tech incubation through platforms such as T-Hub and T-Works. In recent years, Skyroot has significantly expanded its infrastructure footprint. In 2023, the company unveiled “MAX-Q,” described as India’s largest private integrated rocket development facility near Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The company has also signed agreements with the Telangana government to establish integrated private rocket manufacturing, integration and testing facilities in the state. The startup has additionally developed multiple propulsion technologies under its “Kalam” engine series, named after former President and aerospace scientist APJ Abdul Kalam. Among its milestones were successful tests of the Kalam-5 and Kalam-100 rocket motors, both intended for use in the Vikram launch vehicles. The company has claimed these systems represent some of the largest privately developed rocket stages tested in India. Skyroot’s unicorn milestone comes amid growing momentum in India’s private spacetech sector, with companies such as Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Bellatrix Aerospace and Dhruva Space also attracting increasing investor interest and international partnerships. Analysts believe the country’s lower launch costs, engineering talent base and expanding satellite market position India as a major future player in the global commercial space industry. Chief executive Pawan Kumar Chandana recently said global demand for satellite launches and international customers would become a major long-term revenue driver for the company as commercial launch requirements continue rising worldwide.

Bengaluru, India: India has taken a significant step forward in its indigenous fighter jet programme after state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and GE Aerospace concluded a critical technical agreement for the co-production of F414 jet engines, paving the way for a final commercial contract expected later this year. The development marks a major milestone in India’s defence manufacturing ambitions, as the F414 engine is slated to power three key indigenous combat aircraft the Tejas Mk2, the Twin Engine Deck-Based Fighter (TEDBF), and the initial variant of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). HAL and GE Aerospace have finalised the technical aspects of the agreement, including complex negotiations around technology transfer widely regarded as the most challenging phase of the deal. With this stage completed, both sides have moved into commercial negotiations, which are expected to take additional time due to rising global component costs and pricing complexities. Officials indicate that the final contract could be signed within the current financial year, marking the culmination of negotiations that have been underway for nearly three years. A central feature of the agreement is the transfer of approximately 80% of manufacturing technology from GE Aerospace to HAL, one of the most substantial technology transfer arrangements ever secured by India in the aerospace sector. The deal will enable India to manufacture advanced fighter jet engines domestically, significantly reducing dependence on imports and strengthening long-term self-reliance in critical defence technologies. Under the agreement: 99 F414 engines are planned to be manufactured in India for the Tejas Mk2 programme The Indian Air Force (IAF) has projected a requirement of 120–130 Tejas Mk2 aircraft, indicating further engine demand The co-production programme will involve licensed manufacturing in India, not just assembly The engine, capable of delivering around 98 kN of thrust, is critical for the performance requirements of next-generation Indian fighter platforms. Tejas Mk2 The F414 engine will power the Tejas Mk2, a more advanced and heavier variant of the Light Combat Aircraft designed to replace ageing fleets and enhance the IAF’s combat capability. TEDBF (Naval Fighter) The Twin Engine Deck-Based Fighter, intended for aircraft carrier operations, will rely on dual F414 engines for enhanced thrust and maritime capability. AMCA (5th-Generation Fighter) The initial version of India’s fifth-generation stealth fighter, AMCA Mk1, is also expected to use the F414 engine before transitioning to a more powerful indigenous or co-developed engine in later variants. The agreement is expected to play a key role in: Boosting indigenous defence manufacturing under the “Make in India” initiative Strengthening India–US defence cooperation, particularly in high-end aerospace technologies Addressing the Indian Air Force’s declining squadron strength, a major operational concern Enabling future fighter programmes without dependence on foreign engine supplies Experts note that local production of such high-performance engines represents a critical capability gap that India has long sought to bridge. The HAL–GE engine collaboration traces back to a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2023, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States. Since then, negotiations have focused heavily on securing deep technology transfer, with India insisting on a minimum threshold of around 80% for the deal to proceed. Following the conclusion of technical discussions in April 2026, the programme has now entered its final phase before contract signing. Once finalised, the agreement will not only power multiple indigenous fighter programmes but also mark a decisive shift towards domestic production of advanced jet engines, a capability currently limited to a handful of countries worldwide.

Bengaluru, India: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Tuesday successfully completed the maiden flight of its next-generation civil helicopter, the Dhruv New Generation (Dhruv-NG), at the Helicopter Division in Bengaluru a landmark in India’s aspiration to expand its indigenous aerospace footprint beyond defence into commercial and global markets. The next-generation helicopter was flagged off by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who also shared the cockpit with the pilot before take-off, underlining government support for self-reliance in aviation manufacturing. Developed and manufactured by HAL, the Dhruv-NG builds on the company’s existing Dhruv helicopter platform with upgrades tailored to civil aviation requirements. The 5.5-tonne, twin-engine multi-role helicopter is equipped with twin Shakti 1H1C engines an indigenous powerplant that offers enhanced power and the advantage of in-country maintenance and support, according to HAL officials. The variant features a civil-certified glass cockpit compliant with stringent aviation standards, a modern avionics suite for improved situational awareness, and enhanced safety systems including crashworthy seats and self-sealing fuel tanks. HAL sources outlined key performance metrics and design features that position Dhruv-NG as a capable civil helicopter: Maximum Speed: 285 km/h Range: Approx. 630 km with reserves Service Ceiling: 6,000 metres Endurance: 3 hours 40 minutes Passenger Capacity: Configurable to carry up to 14 passengers The cabin design allows rapid reconfiguration for roles such as VIP/VVIP transport, air ambulance, offshore operations, law enforcement, search and rescue, disaster relief and commuter services. The successful inaugural flight places HAL on a stronger footing as a cost-effective alternative to imported light twin-engine helicopters, with potential appeal in domestic and international civil aviation markets. It is part of a broader strategy to diversify HAL’s portfolio beyond military platforms and elevate India’s standing as a global aviation manufacturing hub. Civil Aviation Minister Naidu described the event as a “major Atmanirbharta milestone” and praised the HAL team for advancing India’s self-reliant aerospace capabilities. He highlighted the role of helicopters in upcoming regional connectivity and emergency services expansions under national schemes. Alongside the flight, HAL received certification from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the indigenous Shakti civil engine, a significant step towards full civil certification of the Dhruv-NG helicopter before commercial deployment. Bangalore, India: In a major milestone for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) successfully carried out the maiden flight of the first series-production HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft (tail number TH-4001) from its Bengaluru facility on Friday. The aircraft, built under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, marks the transition of the HTT-40 programme from development to full-scale production. According to HAL, the flight lasted approximately 40 minutes and validated the aircraft’s performance parameters, flight controls, and avionics systems. “This achievement reflects our capability to design, develop, test, and now produce a world-class basic trainer entirely within India,” said HAL Chairman and Managing Director C.B. Ananthakrishnan. “The HTT-40 will soon play a key role in shaping the next generation of Indian Air Force pilots.” The HTT-40 (Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40) is a tandem-seat, fully aerobatic turboprop aircraft designed for ab-initio pilot training. The trainer can perform a range of operations including basic flying, aerobatics, instrument training, and night sorties. Unlike earlier prototypes, the newly flown TH-4001 represents a production-standard version that will lead HAL’s delivery commitments to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The aircraft is powered by a Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprop engine and features a modern glass cockpit, zero-zero ejection seats, hot refuelling capability, and advanced avionics such as VOR/ILS, TACAN, and IFF. HAL officials confirmed that the indigenous content of the HTT-40 currently stands at around 56%, with plans to push it beyond 60% as local suppliers scale up production. The Indian Air Force has placed an order for 70 HTT-40 aircraft, valued at approximately ₹6,800 crore. Deliveries were initially targeted for late 2025 but were delayed due to supply chain constraints, particularly the delayed shipment of Honeywell engines. HAL now expects the first batch of production aircraft to be delivered to the IAF by February 2026, after completion of flight certification and quality assurance trials. A second production line at HAL’s Nashik division has also been inaugurated to accelerate output and meet the IAF’s requirements. The HTT-40 will replace the ageing HPT-32 Deepak trainers that were grounded in 2009 following safety issues. With its modern systems and improved safety standards, the aircraft will serve as the backbone of the IAF’s basic flight training programme, bridging a crucial capability gap in pilot induction.
