Istanbul, Turkey: Turkish Airlines (THY) announced on September 26, 2025, a landmark fleet expansion, planning to acquire up to 225 Boeing aircraft in a deal worth billions of dollars. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. This announcement closely followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included energy policies and potential easing of U.S. sanctions to facilitate F-35 fighter jet purchases. “Negotiations with Boeing have been successfully concluded, supporting our strategy to rank among the world’s top five airlines with a fleet of 813 aircraft by 2033. Our nation’s pride, Turkish Airlines, is confidently advancing toward this goal,” said Bilal Ekşi, CEO of Turkish Airlines. The new aircraft will replace older models, improve fuel efficiency, enhance passenger comfort, and support the airline’s sustainability objectives.

Canberra, Australia: In a landmark move, Qantas has launched commercial operations with its first two Airbus A321XLRs, becoming the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to introduce the model into revenue service. The aircraft, designated “Great Ocean Road” (VH-OGA) and “Outback Way” (VH-OGB), commenced service on 25 September, initially operating the Sydney–Melbourne and Sydney–Perth routes. The names reflect the airline’s tradition of celebrating Australia’s iconic landscapes. Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson noted the scale of preparation required for the launch: “Preparing for these commercial flights has taken an enormous effort, with nearly 350 training flights and more than 40,000 hours of training completed, as well as thousands of pieces of equipment deployed across our network.” Beyond its domestic deployment, the A321XLR’s extended range opens up new possibilities. With a maximum range of approximately 8,700 km, about 3,000 km beyond that of the Boeing 737-800, the aircraft is seen as a bridge between domestic and short-to-medium international flights into Southeast Asia and beyond. Hudson said Qantas plans to roll out the jets on additional domestic and international routes as more units enter service. The two aircraft carry 197 seats in a two-class format 20 in Business and 177 in Economy which amounts to a 13 percent increase in capacity compared to Qantas’s 737-800 fleet (without reducing seat pitch). Notably, the number of Business seats has increased by 66 percent over earlier models. The A321XLRs are powered by Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines. Looking ahead, Qantas expects to receive a third A321XLR in November 2025, bringing the total in service to seven by June 2026. In August 2025. Earlier Qantas placed an order for 20 more A321XLRs, pushing its total commitment to 48 aircraft. These aircraft form a key component in Qantas’s largest-ever fleet renewal program, which totals more than 200 firm orders plus additional purchase options from both Airbus and Boeing.

This marks the highest quarterly passenger total on record, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and contributing to a total of 141 million travelers in the first half of the year, a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The surge in passenger numbers is attributed to a combination of factors, including pent-up demand for travel, increased consumer confidence, and the easing of global travel restrictions. Europe remained the most popular international region for UK travelers, with destinations such as Dublin, Amsterdam, Palma de Mallorca, and Alicante seeing significant traffic. Notably, airports in the north of England, including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Leeds Bradford, collectively welcomed nearly 750,000 additional passengers, highlighting the regional strength of the aviation sector. In addition to the record passenger numbers, the industry has demonstrated notable improvements in operational efficiency. Flight punctuality has seen a significant boost, with 75% of flights departing on time a marked increase of 8 percentage points compared to the same period in 2024. April was particularly strong, with 82% of flights departing as scheduled. Cargo operations have also rebounded, with nearly 700,000 tonnes of goods handled at UK airports between April and June. This represents a 6% year-on-year increase, surpassing pre-pandemic volumes. Key international cargo routes included Dubai, New York, Doha, and Leipzig, with notable growth in deliveries to Asian markets, including a 61% increase to Delhi and a 41% rise to Mumbai. Looking ahead, the CAA anticipates continued growth during the peak summer travel season, with expectations for another record-breaking quarter. The positive trends underscore the resilience of the UK aviation sector and its critical role in supporting economic recovery and connectivity. As the industry continues to evolve, stakeholders remain focused on sustaining growth while enhancing service standards and operational efficiency to meet the demands of an increasingly dynamic global travel landscape.

According to airport officials, United Flight 1871, en route to Denver, struck the tail of United Flight 796, which was parked at the gate preparing for departure to Boston. The incident occurred during the pushback maneuver and took place in an area outside air traffic control supervision. Both planes were immediately returned to their gates for safety inspections, and all passengers were safely disembarked. No injuries were reported. The collision caused both flights to be canceled, leading to delays amid a busy evening schedule at the airport. The aircraft involved were both Boeing 737 MAX 9 models. Flight 796 had been delivered to United Airlines only a few months earlier. Mumbai, India: An Air India flight from Mumbai to Jodhpur was forced to abort its take-off on Friday after the cockpit crew detected an operational issue during the departure roll. The aircraft, operating as Flight AI645, was returned safely to the bay, according to the airline. Air India said in a statement that the pilots acted in line with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and discontinued the take-off as a precautionary measure. Passengers were deplaned and provided with alternative travel arrangements to reach their destination. Ground staff assisted passengers during the delay to minimize inconvenience. A passenger told PTI, cited by Hindustan Times, that the aircraft came to a halt suddenly after rolling for take-off, which created concern among those onboard. The passenger suggested that an engine-related problem might have caused the stoppage, though the airline has described it more broadly as an “operational issue.” The incident follows another disruption earlier in the week when Air India’s Zurich–Delhi flight (AI152) was cancelled on August 17 after a technical snag. Zurich Airport’s strict night curfew compounded the cancellation, forcing the airline to arrange hotel accommodation and offer either rescheduling or refunds for stranded passengers. Since its privatization in January 2022, Air India has stepped up inspections of its aircraft fleet. While these checks have not revealed systemic faults, they have occasionally led to flight delays and cancellations. The airline maintains that these measures are aimed at strengthening operational reliability and ensuring passenger safety, even if they result in temporary disruptions.
