Lucknow, India: An IndiGo flight operating from Delhi to Bagdogra made an emergency landing at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport on Sunday after a bomb threat was detected onboard, triggering a full-scale aviation security response. The aircraft, operating as IndiGo flight 6E-6650, was diverted mid-air after the crew alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC) about a suspicious message found inside the aircraft. According to official sources, a handwritten note claiming the presence of a bomb was discovered on tissue paper inside one of the aircraft’s lavatories. Following standard security protocols, ATC directed the aircraft to divert to Lucknow, where it landed safely. All passengers and crew were evacuated without injury, and the aircraft was moved to an isolation bay for inspection. The flight was carrying 222 adult passengers and eight infants, along with two pilots and five cabin crew members. Security agencies, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), local police, airport security personnel, and a Bomb Disposal Squad, conducted an extensive search of the aircraft, luggage, and cabin. A Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was also convened as part of the response. Initial inspections found no explosive device, and authorities later indicated that the threat appeared to be a hoax, though investigations remain ongoing to identify the source of the message and determine whether legal action will be pursued. IndiGo, in a brief statement, confirmed the diversion and said the airline followed all mandatory safety and security procedures. The airline emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority. Airport operations at Lucknow were temporarily affected during the security checks, but normal operations resumed once authorities cleared the aircraft. India has witnessed a rise in hoax bomb threats targeting aviation in recent months, prompting airlines and airports to adopt a zero-tolerance approach. Aviation security experts stress that even false threats must be treated as real until proven otherwise, given the potential risk to passengers and infrastructure. The message, which claimed explosives had been planted at multiple locations, prompted emergency responses and heightened screening measures, authorities confirmed. The email was received by IndiGo’s grievance portal, warning of possible attacks within 24 hours. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) immediately initiated security drills at key airports. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was among the first to respond after the Delhi Fire Service received a call about a suspected bomb at Terminal 3 around 4 p.m. Security teams, bomb disposal squads, and sniffer units were deployed, and the terminal underwent a full inspection. No suspicious object was found. Simultaneously, an Air India Express flight to Varanasi was evacuated following a separate bomb scare. All passengers and crew were safely deboarded, and a thorough search of the aircraft revealed no threat. Authorities said the two incidents might be linked but emphasized that investigations are ongoing. The threat email also mentioned the recent car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station that killed at least 13 people, prompting nationwide concerns over airport security. Investigators are exploring whether the bomb threat was an attempt to exploit existing public fear following that explosion. All major airports, including those in Thiruvananthapuram and Goa, have been placed on heightened alert. Passengers have been advised to arrive early as additional security checks are causing delays at baggage screening and boarding points. Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that the source of the threat email is under investigation by cybercrime units. The incident occurred on Flight IX-1086, which departed Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at around 8:00 am and landed safely at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport shortly after 10:25 am. According to initial reports, a male passenger approached the cockpit door while apparently searching for the lavatory. Eyewitnesses told investigators that he tried operating the cockpit entry mechanism, which is controlled by a keypad and passcode system. Although early reports suggested the individual may have entered the correct code, sources told The Indian Express that the attempt was unsuccessful and the cockpit door remained secure. The captain, alerted to the unusual activity, immediately blocked access and reinforced cockpit security measures. Cabin crew quickly escorted the passenger away from the cockpit area, following standard aviation safety procedures. On landing in Varanasi, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detained not only the passenger but also eight individuals traveling with him. The group of nine was handed over to Phulpur police for further questioning to determine intent and establish whether the act was accidental or deliberate. Air India Express confirmed the incident but stressed that flight safety and security protocols were never compromised. “Our crew acted promptly in line with standard operating procedures, and the cockpit remained secure throughout,” the airline said in a statement. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified, and officials are assessing whether the incident qualifies as “Level-3 unruly behaviour,” the highest category under India’s Civil Aviation Requirements. Such classification could result in strict penalties, including the possibility of the passenger being placed on a no-fly list.

The Airbus A320 aircraft, operating flight 6E 1089, was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members when the threat was identified mid-air. The flight departed Mumbai at 3:33 PM and was over the Bay of Bengal when the crew was alerted to a possible explosive device in the aircraft's lavatory. The pilot promptly diverted the aircraft to Chennai, ensuring a safe landing at 7:20 PM local time. Passengers were safely deboarded and moved to the airport lounge as security procedures were initiated. Following the landing, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed its bomb disposal unit along with sniffer dogs to thoroughly inspect the aircraft. The investigation revealed that the threat was a hoax. Officials continue to investigate the origin of the threatening email and are working to identify the individual responsible. Due to a night curfew at Phuket airport, the flight’s onward journey was postponed until later in the evening. IndiGo assured passengers that efforts were being made to minimize inconvenience, including providing refreshments and continuous updates throughout the delay. Months ago, on April 8 2025 an IndiGo flight operating from Jaipur to Mumbai was forced to make an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday evening after a bomb threat note was discovered onboard. The aircraft, flight 6E 5324, was carrying 225 passengers and landed safely at approximately 8:50 p.m. Once the plane landed, it was promptly guided to a remote bay for a comprehensive security sweep. Passengers were then safely disembarked under the careful supervision of security personnel.

New Delhi, India: All airports across India have been placed on high alert following a directive issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in response to intelligence inputs warning of a possible terror attack. The advisory, issued to all airport operators, calls for maximum vigilance from September 22 to October 2 and includes all airports, airstrips, helipads, flight schools, training institutes and other civil aviation installations across the country. The alert is based on intelligence suggesting a possible threat originating from a Pakistani-based terror group. The BCAS circular instructs airport operators to implement heightened security protocols, including intensified passenger screening, strict ID verification of staff and vendors, continuous CCTV monitoring, and increased patrolling of sensitive airport zones such as parking areas and terminal entry points. The advisory is part of routine precautionary measures often issued around national holidays or major events. Such alerts are typically seen during Independence Day, Republic Day, and large-scale religious festivals like Durga Puja. All regional airport directors have received the advisory and are complying with the enhanced security measures.
