The chartered aircraft, an Embraer ERJ-145 operated by Airjet Angola (registration D2-AJB), was on a flight (MBC-100) from Lubumbashi to Kolwezi when it veered off runway 29 during landing and caught fire. According to the bureau of aircraft accident archives, both main landing gears were reportedly sheared off as the airplane came to a halt, and the tail section ignited. All 26 passengers and 3 crew evacuated; there are no reported fatalities or serious injuries. Initial reports suggest the aircraft touched down before a displaced threshold on runway 29, which was under maintenance. The Notam issued for Kolwezi Airport indicated that 1,000 metres of the runway were being resurfaced, reducing the effective landing distance. According to the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, this could have contributed to the gear collapse. Eyewitnesses and social media footage show thick smoke rising from the rear fuselage as passengers escaped, some via overwing exits. Isaac Nyembo, communications adviser to Minister Kabamba, said around 20 people were evacuated before the fire spread, though luggage was damaged. Concerns have also been raised over emergency response readiness at Kolwezi Airport. No fire trucks arrived for several minutes, despite the airport being categorized to require rapid rescue capability. Minister Kabamba and his delegation were heading to Kalondo, near Kolwezi, following a recent mining accident in which over 30 workers died in a bridge collapse. The delegation was expected to assess the damage, console affected families, and coordinate government support. An investigation has been launched by the DRC’s aviation authority (BPEA) into the cause of the runway excursion and fire. Kolwezi Airport, located in Lualaba Province, has a single asphalt runway (11/29), around 2,410 metres long. Aviation experts have pointed out that infrastructure challenges, such as runway maintenance, coupled with limited firefighting capacity, may pose ongoing safety risks.

Airbus estimates the need for 69,000 pilots, 64,000 aircraft technicians, and almost 132,000 cabin crew by 2044. The hiring surge aligns with a major increase in aircraft operating in the region. The in-service fleet, currently around 1,480 aircraft, is expected to grow to 3,700 within two decades. Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. By 2030, aviation-linked employment is expected to rise to 816,000 jobs, representing nearly one in four positions in Dubai. The ongoing expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to generate 132,000 additional jobs and contribute more than AED 6.1 billion to Dubai’s GDP by the end of the decade. Training academies, maintenance providers, and regulatory authorities will need to scale rapidly to match the demand. The region’s major carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Saudia have already begun large recruitment drives, signalling strong near-term hiring momentum even before long-term growth peaks. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that a malfunction occurred in the airport’s Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) , a critical platform that generates and distributes flight plans to controllers and pilots. The failure forced the ATC to manually process flight plans, drastically slowing departures through Friday. “The system developed a technical issue late Thursday evening, leading to temporary delays in flight departures,” the AAI said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest.” According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, over 800 flights experienced delays, with more than 175 departures affected on Friday morning alone. The average delay was around 55 minutes, but several international routes were held back much longer. Domestic carriers, including IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India, reported schedule disruptions.
