Varanasi, India: A Bengaluru–Varanasi Air India Express flight sparked a major security scare on Monday after a passenger allegedly attempted to access the cockpit mid-air, prompting the crew and security agencies to take swift action. The incident occurred on Flight IX-1086, which departed Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at around 8:00 am and landed safely at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport shortly after 10:25 am. According to initial reports, a male passenger approached the cockpit door while apparently searching for the lavatory. Eyewitnesses told investigators that he tried operating the cockpit entry mechanism, which is controlled by a keypad and passcode system. Although early reports suggested the individual may have entered the correct code, sources told The Indian Express that the attempt was unsuccessful and the cockpit door remained secure. The captain, alerted to the unusual activity, immediately blocked access and reinforced cockpit security measures. Cabin crew quickly escorted the passenger away from the cockpit area, following standard aviation safety procedures. On landing in Varanasi, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detained not only the passenger but also eight individuals traveling with him. The group of nine was handed over to Phulpur police for further questioning to determine intent and establish whether the act was accidental or deliberate. Air India Express confirmed the incident but stressed that flight safety and security protocols were never compromised. “Our crew acted promptly in line with standard operating procedures, and the cockpit remained secure throughout,” the airline said in a statement. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified, and officials are assessing whether the incident qualifies as “Level-3 unruly behaviour,” the highest category under India’s Civil Aviation Requirements. Such classification could result in strict penalties, including the possibility of the passenger being placed on a no-fly list.

Flight IX 2658, operated by Air India Express, departed Vizag around 2:38 PM with 103 passengers onboard. About 10 nautical miles into its climb, the pilots detected abnormal vibrations in one of the engines and suspected a bird strike. Following standard safety protocols, the commander immediately contacted Air Traffic Control and requested clearance to return. The aircraft made a precautionary landing back at Visakhapatnam airport at approximately 3:00 PM. Emergency services were placed on standby, but the landing was completed without incident. All passengers were safely deboarded, and no injuries were reported. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident, and engineers are carrying out a detailed inspection to confirm the extent of the damage and verify whether a bird strike was indeed the cause of the engine trouble. Air India Express released a statement assuring that passenger safety was never compromised. The airline confirmed that alternative arrangements, including rebooking on later flights and refund options, were being provided to affected passengers. In Russia, Marina Raskova emerged as a legendary pilot during World War II, helping form the all-female combat regiments known as the “Night Witches.” Sarla Thukral became the first Indian woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1936 at the age of 21. She trained on a Gypsy Moth aircraft and paved the way for others, including Prem Mathur, who in 1951 became the first woman to fly a commercial aircraft in India. These pioneers laid the foundation for today’s progress, where India now has one of the highest proportions of female pilots globally, far surpassing the world average. Despite these advances, technical and leadership roles in aviation such as aircraft maintenance engineering, ground operations, and senior management have long been male-dominated. Today, however, new milestones in India and Malaysia are demonstrating how women are reshaping every aspect of the aviation industry. India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has inducted its first-ever all-women batch of aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs). On September 15, 2025, the airline welcomed 33 women technicians who completed a week-long induction program featuring mentoring sessions by senior leaders and female engineers. Bangkok, Thailand: Thai Airways International is preparing to retire its First Class service within the next two to three years, opting instead to invest in an upgraded Business Class as part of a sweeping fleet and product modernization plan. The national carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Chai Eamsiri, confirmed the decision during a recent briefing, framing it as a move toward long-term efficiency and competitiveness. “We plan to eliminate First Class and replace it with enhanced Business Class cabins. It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline intends to streamline this into a three-class offering: Economy, Premium Economy, and an elevated Business Class. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. This new “Business Plus” concept is expected to include more spacious seating in the front row, enhanced privacy potentially with doors and upgraded amenities. While First Class is being phased out, Thai Airways aims to bridge the gap by enriching its Business Class service.The airline has already begun introducing premium amenities into Business, including caviar service on select routes. This aligns with a wider industry trend in which airlines consolidate luxury offerings into an expanded Business Class product rather than maintaining costly, limited-use First Class cabins. Passenger demand also played a decisive role.The modern Business Class products now rival traditional First Class in terms of comfort and privacy, making the higher-cost cabin less attractive and less financially sustainable for carriers. Thai Airways’ shift is also tied to its broader fleet renewal strategy. New aircraft on order, such as Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, will be delivered without First Class cabins. The carrier is also retrofitting its existing fleet to ensure product consistency. Maintaining First Class across just a handful of aircraft and routes such as Bangkok to London and Tokyo has become impractical. Rationalizing the fleet is expected to lower operating costs and simplify scheduling.
