The single-seat fighter was operating from JASDF Naha Air Base and was returning from a scramble mission conducted as part of Japan’s response to a possible airspace intrusion. The incident occurred at around 12:55 p.m. local time as the F-15J landed on Runway 36L, also known as Naha Airport’s B Runway. According to Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) officials, the aircraft developed a problem involving its landing gear during the landing sequence. The jet subsequently became tilted and stopped on the runway. The precise mechanical cause remains under investigation. Images and video from the scene showed the aircraft resting at an angle, with its left side lowered toward the runway. The occurrence was a possible failure of the left main landing gear. Other reports said the fighter slid along the runway after the gear collapsed, with the aircraft rotating roughly 180 degrees before coming to rest facing in the opposite direction. A JASDF spokesman told Stars and Stripes that the landing gear apparently failed as the aircraft touched down shortly before 1 p.m. and that the fighter’s left wing contacted the runway before it came to a stop. Carlisle, United States: A Cessna 150 collided with a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter at Carlisle Regional Airport in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday evening, August 19, killing the Cessna pilot and injuring two state police troopers aboard the helicopter. The collision occurred near a runway at the airport, about 110 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The FAA identified the aircraft involved as a Cessna 150 and a Bell 407. The Cessna pilot, believed to have been the aircraft's only occupant, died in the crash. Authorities had not released the pilot's identity pending notification of next of kin. The Bell 407 was operated by the Pennsylvania State Police and was carrying two members of the department's aviation unit, Cpl. Bryce Corman and Tpr. Jason Mills. The helicopter was conducting a routine training exercise at Carlisle after operating from its Harrisburg base. According to Acting Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Lt. Col. George Bivens, the helicopter was positioned several feet above a grassy area next to a runway when the Cessna approached from behind. The aircraft came down along the runway before veering sharply to the right at the last moment and striking the helicopter from the rear. “As that Cessna came down along that runway for an unknown reason, it veered hard to the right. At the last moment, it struck the helicopter from the rear,” Bivens said. The Cessna struck the helicopter's rear section, involving the tail rotor and then the main rotor, sending both aircraft into a violent crash. The Cessna broke into multiple pieces, while the Bell 407 lost its rotor blades and tail boom before rolling over and coming to rest on its side, partially on its roof. The two troopers were initially trapped inside the helicopter. Corman was able to push out a window and help Mills escape through the opening. Mills was believed to have suffered more serious injuries and significant bleeding, according to Bivens. Both troopers were taken to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Ashley Ludwig, the hospital's trauma medical director, said they arrived as Level 1 trauma patients but had only minor injuries and were in stable condition. One was expected to be discharged Wednesday night, while the other was admitted for further observation. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said the helicopter crew was conducting routine training when the collision occurred. He said the helicopter pilots would not have been able to see the Cessna approaching from behind. “The pilots would not have been able to even see that airplane approaching them,” Paris said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation, with Pennsylvania State Police assisting. The NTSB said the wreckage would be documented and moved to a secure facility for further examination. Although the FAA and NTSB described the incident as a midair collision, Pennsylvania State Police later said the helicopter was on the ground at the time of the impact. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft departed Beijing for Manchester and was cruising at approximately FL340, or 34,000 feet, when the problem occurred. The aircraft was around 190 nautical miles southeast of Krasnoyarsk when it descended to approximately FL200 and diverted toward Krasnoyarsk International Airport. According to reports, the problem emerged approximately four hours into the flight. The aircraft's sensors detected the fault and the crew issued an emergency signal before diverting to Krasnoyarsk.. Russian emergency authorities had prepared for the aircraft's arrival, deploying 51 personnel and 15 vehicles. The response included 39 personnel and 11 vehicles from Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations, according to reports. Emergency teams were positioned as a precaution, but the aircraft completed the landing without an accident. Russia's Emergencies Ministry confirmed that there were no injuries or deaths and that neither the aircraft nor airport infrastructure was damaged. English- and Chinese-speaking airport personnel were also reported to have assisted passengers and crew following the landing. Hainan Airlines confirmed the diversion and apologised to passengers. In its statement, the airline said: “On 15 August 2026, our flight HU753 (Beijing–Manchester) diverted to Krasnoyarsk International Airport in Russia due to a mechanical fault. The flight landed safely at 07:28 Beijing time.” The airline added: “The company plans to replace the aircraft to operate the onward flight. We will properly arrange passenger service support to ensure safe arrival at the destination. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers.” Hainan Airlines also reiterated: “Hainan Airlines always adheres to the principles of safety first and passengers first, providing safe, comfortable and efficient services.” The exact nature of the mechanical fault has not been officially disclosed. Hainan Airlines described the problem as a “mechanical fault,” while Russian authorities referred to it as a technical malfunction. The helicopter was carrying Greek pilot Giorgos Raikos and British newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert. Local reports identified the couple as tourists travelling to Sifnos for their honeymoon. The flight had departed from Markopoulo, near Athens, and was scheduled to arrive at Sifnos at about 6:15 p.m. local time. The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the Tholos area, close to the island’s heliport and residential properties. Greece’s Fire Service said its operations centre was alerted at 6:17 p.m. Two firefighters and one vehicle were dispatched to tackle the fire, while a rescue team from nearby Syros was sent by a Fire Service RAFNAR high-speed vessel to reinforce the response. The helicopter crashed during its approach to Sifnos and burst into flames on impact. Firefighters recovered the bodies of all three occupants while extinguishing the blaze. Local reports said two victims were found in the wreckage, while the third was located a short distance away. The deputy mayor of Sifnos, Manolis Foundoulakis, said he arrived at the scene minutes after the crash and described the aircraft as almost completely destroyed. “What I saw was an amorphous mass, because almost nothing was left of the helicopter,” he told Greek media.
