Gurugram, India: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on March 31, 2026, the appointment of Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the recent resignation of Pieter Elbers amid operational challenges. Walsh, currently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association, will assume the role on or before August 3, 2026, after completing his tenure at IATA on July 31. Elbers stepped down on March 10, 2026, citing personal reasons. However, his departure followed a major operational disruption in December 2025, when IndiGo cancelled over 4,500 flights due to issues linked to pilot duty regulations and crew rostering challenges. The crisis led to regulatory scrutiny and criticism over operational oversight, with the airline acknowledging internal lapses. Despite overseeing significant expansion, including strengthening IndiGo’s international footprint, the disruption accelerated the leadership transition. Walsh brings over four decades of aviation experience to IndiGo. He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979 and later became its CEO, leading a successful turnaround of the airline. He subsequently served as CEO of British Airways from 2005 to 2011, before heading International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, where he played a key role in building one of the world’s largest airline groups. Since 2021, Walsh has led IATA, representing airlines globally on industry, regulatory, and policy matters. Announcing the appointment, IndiGo highlighted Walsh’s leadership credentials and global experience.The airline stated, “Willie Walsh is widely regarded as one of the most respected leaders in global aviation, his deep industry knowledge and leadership experience will be invaluable as IndiGo embarks on its next phase of growth.” "I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. Adding to the announcement, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta stated, “He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record, ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth.” The airline added that his appointment aligns with its long-term strategy to expand internationally while strengthening operational resilience. Walsh’s appointment comes at a crucial time as IndiGo looks to stabilise operations following recent disruptions while accelerating its transformation into a global carrier. Holding a strong position in India’s domestic aviation market, the company’s shares climbed over 9% on Wednesday following the announcement of industry veteran Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer. The airline is now intensifying its focus on long-haul expansion, fleet enhancement, and building a stronger global footprint.
