Auckland, New Zealand: Menzies Aviation Limited, a key ground-handling provider at Auckland Airport, has been ordered by the Auckland High Court to pay a $150,000 penalty for breaching New Zealand’s Biosecurity Act, following enforcement action by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). The court ruling stems from compliance failures identified at two MPI-approved transitional facilities where Menzies handles imported air freight, containers and associated packaging. Transitional facilities are critical checkpoints where incoming goods are cleared of potential biological threats before entering the domestic supply chain. MPI’s investigation found that on follow-up inspections, six consignments of uncleared risk goods were not properly wrapped in plastic, leaving gaps through which unwanted pests could escape. Inspectors also reported that the primary inspection room did not meet required hygiene standards and was not fit for purpose. Additionally, no biosecurity response equipment was present, and records documenting cleaning and staff training were either incomplete or absent. MPI Regional Manager for Investigations North, Aleshea Allen, emphasised the seriousness of the breach, noting that such failures create “a potential biosecurity risk at our border.” Allen reiterated that all operators handling imported goods are expected to fully comply with mandatory requirements set out under the Biosecurity Act. In announcing the penalty, the High Court highlighted that Menzies had failed to comply with a formal compliance order previously issued by MPI marking the first occasion a pecuniary penalty has been sought under the Biosecurity Act. Although Menzies’ non-compliance was not judged to be deliberate, the court upheld the need for deterrence and accountability. In a statement to the NZ Herald, a spokesperson for Menzies Aviation acknowledged the court’s ruling, noting that deficiencies occurred during a period when staffing challenges persisted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company confirmed that corrective measures were implemented well before the court decision and that biosecurity training and processes have since been strengthened. MPI Biosecurity New Zealand Manager Paul Hallett stressed the high stakes of biosecurity compliance, pointing to the risk of invasive pests such as brown marmorated stink bug, ants or moth species all of which have the potential to damage New Zealand’s horticulture and wider economy if inadvertently introduced. Under the Biosecurity Act 1993, corporations can face fines of up to $200,000 for offences related to non-compliance with section 154 obligations, depending on the nature of the breach. The Act forms a central pillar of New Zealand’s border protection system, designed to prevent the introduction of organisms that could threaten indigenous species, agriculture and public health.

The incident disrupted operations at Edinburgh Airport and triggered the temporary suspension of all flights. Flight BA1443, operating an Airbus A320 (registration G‑EUUI), took off from Edinburgh’s Runway 24 at approximately 11:13 GMT on Monday morning. According to tracking data and air‑traffic sources, the flight crew soon identified that the aircraft’s landing gear could not be fully retracted. They issued a “7700” squawk the general‑emergency code then held at altitude around 6,500 feet while troubleshooting. The aircraft circled near the Stirling area for roughly 30–40 minutes before returning to Edinburgh. It landed safely at around 12:20 GMT. Upon landing, the aircraft came to a stop on Edinburgh’s only operational runway and remained immobilised due to the landing‑gear problem. As a result, the airport suspended all arrivals and departures until the aircraft could be towed off and the runway inspected and cleared. During the shutdown, flights from other carriers including easyJet, Ryanair and Lufthansa were delayed or diverted, creating a ripple effect of disruption across the airport’s schedule. Passengers aboard BA1443 were safely evacuated, they were transported back to the terminal via coaches. In a statement, British Airways confirmed the flight’s safe return, “The aircraft returned to Edinburgh Airport safely after our pilots identified a technical issue after take‑off.” The airline added it is working to minimise disruption for affected customers. Edinburgh Airport said that safety remained its top priority. After the aircraft was towed off the runway and hydraulic fluid cleared, normal operations resumed. According to officials, the incident took place during the flight on Friday, November 28, when the accused passenger, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, allegedly touched the cabin crew member inappropriately during the journey. The flight landed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, where security agencies were alerted immediately after the complaint was received. Police said that after the aircraft landed, crew members discovered a handwritten note containing obscene and abusive remarks left behind on the passenger’s seat. The matter was escalated to airport security and local law enforcement, following which the accused was taken into custody for questioning. A formal case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to sexual harassment and use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty. The shift was originally scheduled for 3 November but was pushed to 12 November to avoid peak mid-term travel. From now on, passengers checking in for any Ryanair flight must use the myRyanair mobile app, which generates the only accepted boarding pass format. Ryanair said the first day of the rollout was “a huge success,” with more than 700 flights departing by mid-day and over 98% of passengers using digital passes without issues. The remaining 2%, mostly travellers unable to load the app, were issued printed passes at airport desks free of charge, provided they had already checked in online.
