Hyderabad, India: A Gulf Air flight operating from Bahrain to Hyderabad was diverted to Mumbai early Sunday after airport authorities in Hyderabad received an email claiming a bomb had been placed on the aircraft. The threat was later confirmed to be a hoax after detailed security checks. Flight GF 274, carrying 154 passengers, departed Bahrain at 22:20 hrs on Saturday and was scheduled to arrive at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at 04:55 a.m. On Sunday. At around 3 a.m., an email warning of an explosive device onboard was sent to the Hyderabad airport’s customer support address, prompting authorities to initiate emergency protocols. Following standard procedure, the aircraft was instructed to divert to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, where it landed safely. Security teams conducted multiple layers of inspection and found no suspicious objects. After receiving clearance from security agencies, the flight departed Mumbai and landed in Hyderabad at 11:31 a.m. Gulf Air stated that the diversion was carried out “in accordance with safety and security requirements” and confirmed that all passengers were safe. Hyderabad Airport officials filed a complaint with local police, who have registered a case and begun tracing the origin of the threat email. Authorities noted that the message appeared similar to earlier hoax threats received in recent weeks. The incident follows a series of false alarms involving flights bound for Hyderabad. Earlier this month, an IndiGo flight from Jeddah to Hyderabad was diverted to Mumbai after an email referencing a past airport blast claimed a bomb was onboard. That threat also proved to be false, but it prompted full emergency procedures and inspections. The repeated hoax threats have triggered heightened alert levels at Hyderabad Airport and renewed discussions within India’s aviation sector regarding cyber-threat response, email-verification systems, and rapid-response coordination for inbound international flights.

Mumbai, India: On the morning of November 1, 2025, a security threat email forced the diversion of IndiGo flight 6E 68, operating from Jeddah to Hyderabad. The email sent to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad alleged the presence of a “human bomb” onboard and claimed that operatives of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Inter‑Services Intelligence (ISI) had “planned a major 1984 Madras Airport modus operandi style blast”. After receiving the threat at approximately 5:30 a.m. IST, airport authorities alerted all relevant stakeholders. The flight was diverted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai) where it landed safely. Following normal security protocol, checks were carried out at Mumbai and Hyderabad under cooperation of the airline and security agencies. No suspicious items or individuals were found. A case has been registered by the police and investigation is ongoing. In a statement, IndiGo confirmed receipt of the threat for flight 6E 68 from Jeddah to Hyderabad on November 1, and noted the aircraft diversion to Mumbai in consultation with authorities. The airline said it informed relevant agencies immediately and conducted appropriate security checks before resuming operations. It also stated efforts were made to minimise inconvenience to passengers, including offering refreshments and regular updates. According to aviation tracker flightradar24, the flight was to land in Hyderabad at 9.10 am, but was diverted to Mumbai after the threat. The flight took off after the checks and reached Hyderabad around 4 pm.

Washington, United States: As the U.S. government entered a partial shutdown at midnight on October 1, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans to furlough over 11,000 employees, approximately one-quarter of its workforce due to a lapse in federal funding. This move follows the Department of Transportation's notification that such furloughs would be necessary if the shutdown persisted. Despite the furloughs, more than 13,000 air traffic controllers are required to continue working without pay to maintain air traffic operations. The FAA is also proceeding with hiring and training new controllers, a departure from practices during previous shutdowns. The agency remains approximately 3,800 controllers short of its staffing targets. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that about 25% of its 400 employees would be furloughed. However, the NTSB will continue to launch new investigations into air accidents and other incidents during the shutdown. Meanwhile, about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff working airport security checkpoints would also continue working without pay. During the 35-day shutdown in 2019, absences among controllers and TSA officers increased as paychecks were missed, leading to longer checkpoint wait times and slowed air traffic in cities such as New York, which put pressure on lawmakers to resolve the funding impasse. Airline trade group, Airlines for America, representing carriers including United, Delta, American, and Southwest, warned that a lapse in funding could force the system to slow down, reducing efficiency and affecting travelers. The U.S. Travel Association, which represents airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and other travel businesses, estimated that even a partial shutdown could cost the U.S. travel sector approximately $1 billion per week. The FAA employs around 45,000 people, and the Transportation Department as a whole would furlough 12,200 of its 53,717 employees, including those at the FAA. The agency confirmed that essential certification activities covering commercial airplanes and engines, as well as commercial space launches would continue to ensure operational safety.

Varanasi, India: A Bengaluru–Varanasi Air India Express flight sparked a major security scare on Monday after a passenger allegedly attempted to access the cockpit mid-air, prompting the crew and security agencies to take swift action. The incident occurred on Flight IX-1086, which departed Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at around 8:00 am and landed safely at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport shortly after 10:25 am. According to initial reports, a male passenger approached the cockpit door while apparently searching for the lavatory. Eyewitnesses told investigators that he tried operating the cockpit entry mechanism, which is controlled by a keypad and passcode system. Although early reports suggested the individual may have entered the correct code, sources told The Indian Express that the attempt was unsuccessful and the cockpit door remained secure. The captain, alerted to the unusual activity, immediately blocked access and reinforced cockpit security measures. Cabin crew quickly escorted the passenger away from the cockpit area, following standard aviation safety procedures. On landing in Varanasi, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detained not only the passenger but also eight individuals traveling with him. The group of nine was handed over to Phulpur police for further questioning to determine intent and establish whether the act was accidental or deliberate. Air India Express confirmed the incident but stressed that flight safety and security protocols were never compromised. “Our crew acted promptly in line with standard operating procedures, and the cockpit remained secure throughout,” the airline said in a statement. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified, and officials are assessing whether the incident qualifies as “Level-3 unruly behaviour,” the highest category under India’s Civil Aviation Requirements. Such classification could result in strict penalties, including the possibility of the passenger being placed on a no-fly list.
