According to figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and industry reporting, the affected aircraft represent approximately 13.1 per cent of Vietnam’s operational commercial fleet, underscoring the depth of the ongoing supply chain challenge. The grounding stems from an extended recall and repair cycle for Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G geared turbofan engines, which power a large portion of narrow‑body jets such as the Airbus A321neo. Preliminary data estimates that international passenger numbers will reach around 46.9 million in 2025, marking roughly a 13.3 per cent increase compared with the previous year. Domestic passenger traffic also rose, with nearly 36.6 million travellers, reflecting sustained demand across segments. Total passenger traffic is seen growing by upwards of 6.7 per cent, while cargo volumes have climbed by 4.6 per cent over the same period. Vietnam’s aviation regulator and airline operators have initiated strategies to mitigate the impact of grounded aircraft, including fleet reallocation, schedule adjustments, and prioritising high‑demand routes. The CAAV has signalled that while the number of grounded jets has eased compared with earlier reports in 2025, supply chain recovery challenges persist. Katunayake, Sri Lanka: A Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 operating Flight TK-733 from Colombo to Istanbul made a safe emergency landing early Wednesday morning at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after the crew detected a technical issue with the aircraft’s landing gear shortly after departure, according to airport authorities and multiple media reports. The wide-body aircraft, carrying 202 passengers and 10 crew members, departed BIA at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Shortly after take-off, the flight crew identified a problem with the landing gear and opted to return to the airport as a precautionary measure. In accordance with standard safety procedures, the aircraft circled over Sri Lankan airspace, including areas near Colombo and Chilaw, to burn excess fuel and reduce landing weight before the emergency return. Airport officials placed the runway on emergency standby, with fire and rescue teams, ambulances, and other emergency response units deployed in anticipation of the aircraft’s return. At approximately 00:28 a.m. local time, the Turkish Airlines flight made a safe touchdown at BIA. New Delhi, India: Flight operations across several Indian carriers were disrupted on Tuesday after volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi eruption drifted toward major West Asia and India-bound air corridors. Airlines including Air India, Akasa Air and IndiGo cancelled or rerouted multiple flights as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an urgent advisory enforcing strict avoidance of ash-affected airspace. The DGCA directed airlines to steer clear of regions and flight levels identified as contaminated by volcanic ash. The regulator also instructed carriers to reassess flight plans, fuel requirements and alternates, and to file immediate reports of any suspected ash encounters. The advisory highlighted the risk to aircraft engines and airframes, and asked operators to conduct additional inspections for any aircraft that may have flown near the affected zones. Airports were simultaneously ordered to check runways, aprons and taxiways for possible ash contamination and initiate cleaning procedures if required. Deputy Prime Minister and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka told Parliament that the airline reported 41 bird strike cases in 2024, compared with 33 in 2023 and 24 in 2022. Four Boeing 737 aircraft were grounded last year after bird strikes, costing the airline about US $19.2 million, while another engine incident this year caused an extra US $4.8 million loss. A major incident took place on October 9, 2025, when Fiji Airways flight FJ450 from Christchurch to Nadi hit a flock of pigeons during take-off. The impact damaged the aircraft’s nose, wings, and both engines. The pilots safely returned to Christchurch Airport. Industry data shows that bird strikes have already cost Fiji Airways more than US $8.4 million in 2024 alone. These costs include repairs, grounded aircraft, and flight delays. Fiji Airports has started a Wildlife Hazard Management Program to stop birds from gathering near runways. This includes mapping bird habitats within five kilometres of airports, using bird deterrent systems, and training airport staff to handle wildlife safely. The committee will coordinate actions to reduce bird strike risks across the country. Minister Gavoka said poor waste management, open drains, and fruit trees near airports attract birds. He urged local councils to improve waste control and restrict land use that encourages bird activity. “Safety is our top priority,” Gavoka told Parliament. “We must protect our people and our aircraft from unnecessary danger.” Experts say Fiji’s geography makes bird strikes harder to prevent, as many airports are close to the coast and farmland. Open garbage areas and food waste around Nadi and Nausori airports also draw more birds. Bird strikes usually happen during take-off or landing, when planes are flying low. Even small birds can cause major damage if they hit engines or wings. Authorities are now looking at advanced tools such as bird-detection radar, sound-based deterrents, and public education programs to reduce the risk. Communities living near airports will be asked to help by keeping waste areas clean and avoiding bird feeding near flight paths.
