During recent proceedings, SpiceJet informed the court that enforcing the ₹144 crore ($17 Million) payment order at short notice would severely strain its already limited liquidity, potentially disrupting day-to-day operations. The airline sought additional time to arrange funds, arguing that an immediate payout could destabilize its financial structure and impact flight operations. The dispute stems from a long-running arbitration case linked to a 2015 share transfer agreement between SpiceJet and Maran. While the airline maintains it is entitled to eventual refunds after the legal process concludes, courts have continued to press for compliance with interim payment directives. Earlier, the Supreme Court of India declined to stay the deposit order, effectively escalating pressure on the airline to secure funds. Adding to its troubles, a UK court recently directed SpiceJet to pay approximately around ₹66 crore ($8 million) to an engine leasing company over unpaid dues related to maintenance reserves and rent dating back to 2020-2022. The ruling highlights the airline’s growing exposure to international liabilities and creditor actions. SpiceJet’s financial condition has remained under scrutiny, with auditors flagging “going concern” risks in recent assessments. The airline continues to grapple with high debt levels, negative net worth, and persistent losses. Industry data indicates that only a portion of its fleet is currently operational, limiting revenue generation capacity. The airline’s market share has also eroded significantly in recent years, as larger competitors consolidate dominance in India’s domestic aviation sector. In an attempt to improve liquidity, SpiceJet has initiated efforts to sell non-core assets, including land holdings in Gurugram, reportedly through a structured sale process. However, the court did not accept these assets as immediate security against the payment obligation, emphasising the airline’s lack of readily available cash reserves. The airline’s challenges are further compounded by rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and operational disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have forced route adjustments and increased fuel burn. Analysis by air travel analytics firm AirAdvisor which tracks on‑time performance on thousands of flights found that only 57 per cent of TUI’s services took off and landed within 15 minutes of their scheduled times, placing it at the bottom of the UK punctuality rankings. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) defines a flight as on‑time if it departs or arrives within that 15‑minute window. Despite improving slightly from earlier months in 2025 when punctuality figures dipped below 50 per cent TUI’s on‑time performance remains markedly lower than competitors, according to AirAdvisor’s data. The report underlines growing frustration among travellers, with anecdotal accounts from affected passengers pointing to extended delays and consequential disruptions to holiday plans. A separate travel‑industry news release also underscored the negative impact extended delays can have on the UK’s broader travel and tourism sectors. TUI does not stand alone. The grounding stems from an extended recall and repair cycle for Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G geared turbofan engines, which power a large portion of narrow‑body jets such as the Airbus A321neo. These engines have been subject to global maintenance and availability constraints, affecting multiple airlines worldwide. According to aviation data provider OAG, total seat capacity in the region now stands 0.5% higher than in 2019, driven primarily by robust domestic markets in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. Data from OAG shows that China’s domestic capacity is 14% higher than 2019 levels, while India’s domestic seat capacity is up by 13%, reflecting the strength of internal connectivity and economic activity. Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern are leading the growth in international seat capacity. Singapore Airlines is one of three Asia-Pacific carriers that have exceeded their 2019 international capacity, operating 14.1% more seats than in 2024. The other two are Scoot (+13.8%) and EVA Airways (+4.5%). The ticket prices across the region have dropped because of rapid capacity growth and tougher competition. Fares on 17 of the 20 fastest-growing routes have fallen by over 20%, with Bangkok–Shanghai (BKK–PVG) seeing the steepest decline of 71% year-on-year. Even as international capacity continues to recover more gradually, the rapid expansion of domestic networks has allowed airlines to stabilize operations and rebuild financial strength. The recovery is also being shaped by rapid technological transformation across airlines and airports. In Singapore, Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has embraced digital solutions to improve operational efficiency. The airline’s virtual Operations Command Center (OCC), developed in partnership with OutSystems, enables real-time monitoring of flight operations and proactive disruption management. According to Leonard Tan, Regional Vice President at OutSystems, the system has improved data visibility by 90% and reduced manual processing by 60%, allowing Scoot to respond faster to operational challenges. “By digitizing core operational workflows, airlines can make better decisions, reduce costs, and enhance passenger experience,” Tan explained. The Asia-Pacific region’s aviation growth is now outpacing global averages, reflecting both market resilience and structural shifts toward efficiency. The national carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Chai Eamsiri, confirmed the decision during a recent briefing, framing it as a move toward long-term efficiency and competitiveness. “We plan to eliminate First Class and replace it with enhanced Business Class cabins. It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline intends to streamline this into a three-class offering: Economy, Premium Economy, and an elevated Business Class. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. This new “Business Plus” concept is expected to include more spacious seating in the front row, enhanced privacy potentially with doors and upgraded amenities. While First Class is being phased out, Thai Airways aims to bridge the gap by enriching its Business Class service.The airline has already begun introducing premium amenities into Business, including caviar service on select routes. This aligns with a wider industry trend in which airlines consolidate luxury offerings into an expanded Business Class product rather than maintaining costly, limited-use First Class cabins. Passenger demand also played a decisive role.The modern Business Class products now rival traditional First Class in terms of comfort and privacy, making the higher-cost cabin less attractive and less financially sustainable for carriers. Thai Airways’ shift is also tied to its broader fleet renewal strategy. New aircraft on order, such as Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, will be delivered without First Class cabins. The carrier is also retrofitting its existing fleet to ensure product consistency. Maintaining First Class across just a handful of aircraft and routes such as Bangkok to London and Tokyo has become impractical. Rationalizing the fleet is expected to lower operating costs and simplify scheduling.
