New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is preparing to roll out a Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) framework for cabin crew, marking a significant shift in India’s approach to aviation training and safety. The initiative aims to move beyond traditional checklist-driven instruction and instead focus on developing measurable, scenario-based competencies that improve crew performance in real-life situations. DGCA Chief Flight Operations Inspector Shweta Singh said that draft regulations for the new training model are expected to be released within a month, and the adoption will be voluntary for airlines at the initial stage. The framework is expected to eventually become an integral part of airline training programs across India. The CBTA model, already implemented for pilot training since 2022, emphasizes skill proficiency, decision-making, and communication under operational pressures rather than rote procedural knowledge. Singh explained, “For example, if there is a fire in the cabin, how will they deal with it, how will they communicate, how will they coordinate? All these performance indicators will be embedded in the CBTA framework to help cabin crew train better.” Industry leaders have welcomed the move as a progressive step that aligns Indian aviation standards with global practices recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The ICAO’s competency-based approach ensures that crew members are not only trained to complete tasks but also assessed on how effectively they handle unexpected challenges during flight operations. At a recent industry conference, Captain Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations at IndiGo, said that competency, rather than crew numbers, determines operational safety and efficiency. “The number of people onboard matters less than how competent they are to handle different situations,” Mittra stated, emphasizing the importance of advanced training models as India’s airlines continue to expand their fleets and international operations. India’s aviation sector is among the fastest-growing in the world, with airlines adding hundreds of new aircraft over the next decade. This growth has created a parallel demand for highly skilled flight and cabin crew, and the DGCA’s move to adopt CBTA reflects the regulator’s effort to strengthen operational safety standards amid rapid expansion. The regulator’s shift toward competency-based models also aligns with its broader vision of improving human performance, safety culture, and regulatory oversight within the Indian aviation ecosystem. Aviation experts believe that implementing CBTA will not only elevate the quality of training but also make Indian crew members more adaptable and globally competitive.

New Delhi, India: India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has flagged several regulatory and safety management lapses at Akasa Air following a routine surveillance review covering the April–September 2025 period. The authority has directed the airline to undertake corrective action after identifying “systemic failures” across multiple operational domains. The DGCA’s findings point to irregularities in Akasa Air’s flight safety systems, crew duty-time compliance, and internal safety audits. The regulator reportedly observed repetitive procedural lapses and documentation gaps, including delayed closure of internal audit findings and incomplete reviews of cockpit voice and flight data recorder (CVR/FDR) analyses. The regulator also highlighted discrepancies in the alignment of Akasa Air’s Safety Management System (SMS) manual with departmental manuals governing flight operations and engineering. In addition, not all employees had completed mandatory fatigue management training, which forms a critical component of the DGCA’s flight safety oversight framework. Akasa Air, a Mumbai-based Indian airline that launched commercial operations in August 2022. It was founded by Vinay Dube and Aditya Ghosh, with substantial backing from renowned investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. The airline began operations on August 7, 2022, with its first flight between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, using a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The latest regulatory scrutiny comes as the airline continues its network expansion across domestic routes and prepares for future international growth. In its official response, Akasa Air confirmed that it had submitted detailed explanations and corrective action reports to the DGCA within prescribed timelines. The airline said it remains fully committed to maintaining “the highest levels of operational and safety excellence in line with all regulatory requirements.” Akasa also stressed that such surveillance audits are routine across all scheduled airlines and form part of ongoing safety oversight. While the DGCA has not announced any immediate punitive action, the findings reportedly include Level-II safety observations, a category indicating recurring compliance concerns that warrant close monitoring and formal corrective plans. The regulator has sought a comprehensive Corrective Action Plan (CAP) from the airline, including root cause analyses and steps to prevent recurrence.

Indonesia has announced a new directive requiring all international aviation waste entering its territory to be sent back to its country of origin, reinforcing the government’s stance against becoming a disposal site for foreign refuse. The Ministry of Transportation confirmed that waste generated by international flights including cabin trash, catering residues, and cargo packaging must be repatriated and processed under the waste management rules of the originating nation. The regulation is part of Indonesia’s effort to safeguard environmental sovereignty and ensure strict adherence to international waste-control agreements. Officials said the measure is consistent with Indonesia’s commitments under the Basel Convention, which mandates the return of hazardous or non-compliant waste shipments to their source countries. Authorities emphasized that no imported waste, whether by air or sea, should contain hazardous or contaminated materials disguised as recyclables. The government has already begun returning several shipments found to contain dangerous or non-conforming substances. In recent months, containers with toxic and radioactive traces were ordered back to their exporters following inspections at Indonesian ports. The attendant sought medical treatment upon arrival at Taoyuan Airport on September 25 and was initially treated at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou. She was later transferred to China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, where she passed away on October 10. Reports indicate that Sun had informed her cabin chief about receiving an injection at the airport for pain and fever before being referred to a hospital's rheumatology department. Doctors suspected Adult-Onset Still’s Disease (AOSD), a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by high fevers, salmon-colored rashes, sore throat, joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. The condition affects roughly 1 in 100,000 people worldwide and can lead to severe complications such as pericarditis, pneumonia, or macrophage activation syndrome, which carries a high mortality rate. The Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union has called for better care and support for sick flight attendants, urging EVA Air to ease sick leave rules. EVA Air has launched an internal investigation, and Taiwan labor authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding Sun’s death. EVA Air is currently facing a public relations fallout on multiple fronts. The story has gone global, fueling anger over reports that cabin leadership failed to call in medical support teams or summon an ambulance for a severely ill employee. New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, India’s largest airline, for alleged lapses in its pilot training programme. The regulator found that the airline had used unqualified flight simulators to train pilots operating flights to Category C aerodromes, which are considered challenging due to terrain and approach conditions. According to the filing, the alleged non-compliance relates to the airline’s “failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes.” These airports include Calicut, Mangaluru, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl, Shimla, and international locations such as Kabul and Kathmandu. Aviation experts said that Category C airports require pilots to undergo specific simulator training replicating the topography and terrain of those airfields. “A qualified simulator must realistically depict the local geography, altitude, and approach pattern. Using a generic simulator can affect pilot readiness for critical airports like Leh or Calicut,” said Captain Anil S. Rao, President of the All India Pilots Association, in comments to The New Indian Express. In its statement, IndiGo said the fine would have no material impact on its operations and that it would contest the DGCA order before the appropriate appellate authority. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest training standards and operational safety,” the airline said. The DGCA’s order, dated September 26, 2025, stated that IndiGo failed to comply with simulator certification standards while conducting recurrent training for pilots assigned to operate at high-risk airports. The penalty was disclosed by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, in its filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The DGCA had earlier issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo on August 11, 2025, for using unapproved Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators in pilot training. These simulators were reportedly used for critical training functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks without securing the necessary regulatory approval. The DGCA gave IndiGo seven days to respond, warning that failure to do so could have led to enforcement actions, including potential suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo acknowledged the notice and temporarily withdrew the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance. The airline cooperated with the DGCA to ensure all training devices met the required standards.
