Romanian authorities said four people received medical assistance for possible smoke inhalation, though none required hospitalization. Flight BA603, operated by an Airbus A320, departed Istanbul earlier in the day with 142 passengers and crew on board. The aircraft declared an emergency around 5:50 p.m. local time and landed safely at 6:14 p.m. at Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest, according to Romania’s air traffic control and emergency services. The Romanian Ministry of Health initially reported that smoke was detected inside the cabin and that four individuals were affected. Medical teams treated the passengers at the airport, and all were later cleared without serious injuries. British Airways said in a statement to The Associated Press that “Our flight diverted to Bucharest as a precaution following a suspected technical issue. The aircraft landed safely and customers disembarked normally. Safety is always our highest priority.” The airline added that its engineers were examining the aircraft and that passengers were provided hotel accommodation while arrangements were made for onward travel to London. Romanian aviation authorities confirmed that the aircraft was to undergo inspection before resuming operations. The cause of the incident has not been officially determined, though officials described the diversion as “precautionary.” Local emergency crews deployed ambulances, fire units, and airport medical teams to the runway as part of standard safety protocol during emergency landings.

New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, India’s largest airline, for alleged lapses in its pilot training programme. The regulator found that the airline had used unqualified flight simulators to train pilots operating flights to Category C aerodromes, which are considered challenging due to terrain and approach conditions. According to the filing, the alleged non-compliance relates to the airline’s “failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes.” These airports include Calicut, Mangaluru, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl, Shimla, and international locations such as Kabul and Kathmandu. Aviation experts said that Category C airports require pilots to undergo specific simulator training replicating the topography and terrain of those airfields. “A qualified simulator must realistically depict the local geography, altitude, and approach pattern. Using a generic simulator can affect pilot readiness for critical airports like Leh or Calicut,” said Captain Anil S. Rao, President of the All India Pilots Association, in comments to The New Indian Express. In its statement, IndiGo said the fine would have no material impact on its operations and that it would contest the DGCA order before the appropriate appellate authority. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest training standards and operational safety,” the airline said. The DGCA’s order, dated September 26, 2025, stated that IndiGo failed to comply with simulator certification standards while conducting recurrent training for pilots assigned to operate at high-risk airports. The penalty was disclosed by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, in its filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The DGCA had earlier issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo on August 11, 2025, for using unapproved Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators in pilot training. These simulators were reportedly used for critical training functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks without securing the necessary regulatory approval. The DGCA gave IndiGo seven days to respond, warning that failure to do so could have led to enforcement actions, including potential suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo acknowledged the notice and temporarily withdrew the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance. The airline cooperated with the DGCA to ensure all training devices met the required standards.

The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

The Airbus A320 aircraft, operating flight 6E 1089, was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members when the threat was identified mid-air. The flight departed Mumbai at 3:33 PM and was over the Bay of Bengal when the crew was alerted to a possible explosive device in the aircraft's lavatory. The pilot promptly diverted the aircraft to Chennai, ensuring a safe landing at 7:20 PM local time. Passengers were safely deboarded and moved to the airport lounge as security procedures were initiated. Following the landing, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed its bomb disposal unit along with sniffer dogs to thoroughly inspect the aircraft. The investigation revealed that the threat was a hoax. Officials continue to investigate the origin of the threatening email and are working to identify the individual responsible. Due to a night curfew at Phuket airport, the flight’s onward journey was postponed until later in the evening. IndiGo assured passengers that efforts were being made to minimize inconvenience, including providing refreshments and continuous updates throughout the delay. Months ago, on April 8 2025 an IndiGo flight operating from Jaipur to Mumbai was forced to make an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday evening after a bomb threat note was discovered onboard. The aircraft, flight 6E 5324, was carrying 225 passengers and landed safely at approximately 8:50 p.m. Once the plane landed, it was promptly guided to a remote bay for a comprehensive security sweep. Passengers were then safely disembarked under the careful supervision of security personnel.

About 10 nautical miles into its climb, the pilots detected abnormal vibrations in one of the engines and suspected a bird strike. Following standard safety protocols, the commander immediately contacted Air Traffic Control and requested clearance to return. The aircraft made a precautionary landing back at Visakhapatnam airport at approximately 3:00 PM. Emergency services were placed on standby, but the landing was completed without incident. All passengers were safely deboarded, and no injuries were reported. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident, and engineers are carrying out a detailed inspection to confirm the extent of the damage and verify whether a bird strike was indeed the cause of the engine trouble. Air India Express released a statement assuring that passenger safety was never compromised. The airline confirmed that alternative arrangements, including rebooking on later flights and refund options, were being provided to affected passengers. The flight, however, has been cancelled pending safety clearance of the aircraft.

According to DGCA officials, routine surveillance and compliance checks found that a few Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators at IndiGo’s training facility were not in line with the mandatory certification standards under Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) for pilot training. These simulators are used for crucial functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks, all of which are mandatory for maintaining a pilot’s operational license. “The operator has been asked to explain why these devices were used for training and assessment without approval. This is a serious compliance lapse,” a senior DGCA official said on condition of anonymity. The notice gives the airline a period of seven days to respond, failing which the regulator may initiate enforcement action, including possible suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo, in an emailed statement to The Economic Times, acknowledged receiving the notice and confirmed it had “temporarily withdrawn the use of the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance.” The airline added that it is “fully cooperating with the DGCA to ensure that all training devices meet the required technical and regulatory standards.” This is not the first time the DGCA has tightened oversight on simulator usage in India’s civil aviation sector. This fresh forecast, released just ahead of the 2025 Paris Air Show signals strong confidence in the aviation industry's resilience and the growing global demand for air travel, even amid lingering supply chain challenges and geopolitical uncertainties. Of the total projected deliveries, approximately 39,500 will be passenger aircraft, and 3,920 will be freighters, with 920 of those being newly built cargo aircraft. The rest will come from conversions of existing passenger jets into freighters, a trend driven by the ongoing surge in e-commerce and express delivery demand worldwide. According to Airbus, 80% of all new aircraft will be single-aisle jets such as the A320 family. These aircraft are in high demand across fast-growing domestic and regional aviation markets, especially in countries like India, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines where more people are flying than ever before. These markets are witnessing rapid population growth, an expanding middle class, and improved airport infrastructure, creating conditions ripe for aviation growth. The remaining 20% of aircraft will be wide-body aircraft, which are typically used for long-haul international flights. Demand for these aircraft is expected to come from countries with large international hubs such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, the United States, Germany, and France. These nations play key roles in global connectivity, acting as transfer points between continents and regions. China is set to dominate the demand, with Airbus projecting the country will need over 9,000 new aircraft by 2044, more than 20% of the global total. This makes China the single largest aviation market outside the U.S., with growth driven by a mix of expanding domestic travel, regional connections, and increasing international operations. India, already among the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, is expected to require more than 2,500 new aircraft over the same period. The Indian government's push to improve regional connectivity through the UDAN scheme, combined with a young population and rapid urbanization, continues to fuel the country’s aviation boom. The Middle East, with ambitious aviation projects like Saudi Arabia’s NEOM airport, UAE’s Al Maktoum International Airport, and Qatar’s long-term expansion plans, will remain a key region for wide-body orders. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar are actively investing in new-generation aircraft to support their growing fleets and airline ambitions. In Africa, while demand is smaller in absolute terms, the continent is expected to double its fleet size. Countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and South Africa are projected to see strong growth, especially in intra-African connectivity, which has been historically underserved. Airbus estimates that the global passenger traffic will grow by 3.6% annually over the next 20 years. This growth is consistent across emerging and developed markets and is driven by a mix of population growth, tourism recovery, business travel, and international trade. At the same time, the total number of aircraft in service worldwide is expected to rise from 24,240 aircraft in 2024 to around 48,230 by 2044. By then, nearly 95% of the global fleet will be comprised of new-generation aircraft, underlining the shift toward more fuel-efficient, quieter, and lower-emission designs. Despite ongoing bottlenecks in engine deliveries, avionics, and cabin interiors, Airbus remains committed to delivering 820 aircraft in 2025. While production has been affected in the short term, the long-term outlook remains optimistic. The company continues to ramp up output, particularly for its A320neo family, which remains a global bestseller. The new forecast from Airbus underscores a global aviation industry that is not only recovering but preparing for its next era of expansion, one that is greener, more connected, and more geographically diverse than ever before. With countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America contributing significantly to future fleet growth, the next two decades could see air travel become even more accessible and essential to economies worldwide.
