According to the latest data released by the International Air Transport Association, total air cargo demand measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK) increased by 11.2% year-on-year, marking a significant acceleration compared to January’s already solid performance. The February growth builds on a positive start to the year, when demand rose 5.6% year-on-year in January, highlighting strengthening momentum across global freight markets. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTK), also expanded in February, reflecting airlines’ efforts to match rising demand, though supply growth continued to lag behind demand in several regions. IATA attributed the strong February performance to multiple macroeconomic and industry factors: Global trade expansion continued to support cargo volumes, with goods trade showing steady growth in late 2025. Manufacturing activity improved, with Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) levels remaining around or above the 50-point expansion threshold, indicating strengthening industrial output. E-commerce and time-sensitive shipments remained key contributors to sustained cargo demand. Jet fuel prices showed relative easing earlier in the year, providing some operational relief to airlines. Despite the strong growth, IATA cautioned that the operating environment remains complex, shaped by geopolitical tensions, shifting trade policies, and supply chain uncertainties. IATA Director General Willie Walsh noted that while air cargo continues to demonstrate resilience, global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical developments particularly in the Middle East could weigh on performance in the coming months. Air cargo growth in February remained uneven across regions, continuing trends observed in January: Asia-Pacific maintained its position as the primary growth engine, supported by strong export activity and manufacturing demand. Europe recorded steady gains, reflecting improving intra-regional and international trade flows. Middle East carriers continued to benefit from strategic hub positioning, though capacity expansion remained high. Africa again posted the fastest growth rates, albeit from a smaller base. North America lagged behind, with some markets continuing to face demand softness and trade-related challenges. The February surge reinforces expectations of continued growth in 2026, following a record performance in 2025, when global air cargo demand rose 3.4% year-on-year, reaching historic volume levels. IATA projects that airlines could carry over 71 million tonnes of cargo in 2026, supported by structural drivers such as e-commerce expansion and demand for high-value, time-critical goods. However, the association emphasized that growth may not be linear. Trade policy uncertainty, geopolitical risks, and capacity constraints are expected to remain key variables influencing the market trajectory. February’s double-digit growth underscores the resilience and strategic importance of air cargo in the global logistics ecosystem. While demand fundamentals remain strong, the industry continues to operate in a volatile environment where geopolitical developments and economic shifts could quickly reshape supply-demand dynamics.

Maryland, United States: A FedEx Express cargo aircraft experienced a mechanical failure on Wednesday when its nose landing gear collapsed while the plane was parked outside a maintenance hangar at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). The incident occurred on Feb. 4, 2026, involving an Airbus A300-600F freighter, registered N682FE, which was undergoing scheduled maintenance at the time. The aircraft, operated by FedEx Express, settled forward as the nose gear gave way, coming to rest on the airport ramp. There were no injuries to FedEx personnel or emergency responders at the scene. Airport fire and rescue crews were dispatched promptly after the collapse was reported. A spokesperson for BWI-Marshall confirmed that emergency units responded and secured the area. Commercial passenger operations were unaffected, as the aircraft was in a designated cargo and maintenance zone well clear of active passenger facilities. In a statement to WBAL-TV 11 News, FedEx said it was aware of the incident and thanked its teams and first responders for their quick action. The company reiterated that no injuries resulted from the gear collapse. The Airbus A300-600F involved is part of FedEx’s older freighter fleet and has been in service for more than two decades. Auckland, New Zealand: Menzies Aviation Limited, a key ground-handling provider at Auckland Airport, has been ordered by the Auckland High Court to pay a $150,000 penalty for breaching New Zealand’s Biosecurity Act, following enforcement action by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). The court ruling stems from compliance failures identified at two MPI-approved transitional facilities where Menzies handles imported air freight, containers and associated packaging. Transitional facilities are critical checkpoints where incoming goods are cleared of potential biological threats before entering the domestic supply chain. MPI’s investigation found that on follow-up inspections, six consignments of uncleared risk goods were not properly wrapped in plastic, leaving gaps through which unwanted pests could escape. Inspectors also reported that the primary inspection room did not meet required hygiene standards and was not fit for purpose. Additionally, no biosecurity response equipment was present, and records documenting cleaning and staff training were either incomplete or absent. MPI Regional Manager for Investigations North, Aleshea Allen, emphasised the seriousness of the breach, noting that such failures create “a potential biosecurity risk at our border.” Allen reiterated that all operators handling imported goods are expected to fully comply with mandatory requirements set out under the Biosecurity Act. In announcing the penalty, the High Court highlighted that Menzies had failed to comply with a formal compliance order previously issued by MPI marking the first occasion a pecuniary penalty has been sought under the Biosecurity Act. Although Menzies’ non-compliance was not judged to be deliberate, the court upheld the need for deterrence and accountability. In a statement to the NZ Herald, a spokesperson for Menzies Aviation acknowledged the court’s ruling, noting that deficiencies occurred during a period when staffing challenges persisted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company confirmed that corrective measures were implemented well before the court decision and that biosecurity training and processes have since been strengthened. MPI Biosecurity New Zealand Manager Paul Hallett stressed the high stakes of biosecurity compliance, pointing to the risk of invasive pests such as brown marmorated stink bug, ants or moth species all of which have the potential to damage New Zealand’s horticulture and wider economy if inadvertently introduced. Under the Biosecurity Act 1993, corporations can face fines of up to $200,000 for offences related to non-compliance with section 154 obligations, depending on the nature of the breach. The surge in passenger numbers is attributed to a combination of factors, including pent-up demand for travel, increased consumer confidence, and the easing of global travel restrictions. Europe remained the most popular international region for UK travelers, with destinations such as Dublin, Amsterdam, Palma de Mallorca, and Alicante seeing significant traffic. Notably, airports in the north of England, including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Leeds Bradford, collectively welcomed nearly 750,000 additional passengers, highlighting the regional strength of the aviation sector. In addition to the record passenger numbers, the industry has demonstrated notable improvements in operational efficiency.
