Lagos, Nigeria: Nigeria’s aviation sector is facing a storm of criticism after the federal government approved a new $11.50 security levy on all international flight tickets, a move expected to generate nearly $1 billion over two decades but which airlines and travel groups have denounced as yet another burden on passengers. The new charge, announced by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), will take effect from December 1, 2025, applying to both inbound and outbound international tickets. With this addition, total security-related fees on international flights will rise to $31.50 per passenger. According to the NCAA, the revenue will fund the rollout of the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) , a digital data platform designed to enhance border control, detect security threats, and speed up passenger processing. Officials say the APIS project will integrate multiple airport agencies into a single digital interface, allowing Nigeria to align with global aviation security standards. “This initiative is crucial for enhancing national security and complying with international best practices,” an NCAA spokesperson said, noting that the levy would support infrastructure and software maintenance for the system. However, the decision has triggered widespread pushback from airlines, travel agents, and passenger groups, who describe the levy as “multiple taxation” that will worsen Nigeria’s already high air-travel costs. The National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) warned that the move could drive passengers to book cheaper routes through neighbouring countries such as Ghana or Benin, eroding Nigeria’s competitiveness as a regional hub. “Nigerian travellers are already over-taxed. This additional $11.50 per ticket adds no visible benefit to the flying public,” a NANTA official told Daily Trust. Industry analysts also expressed concern that the policy might deter international traffic and harm tourism recovery at a time when the economy remains fragile. The levy could yield up to $46 million annually, which the NCAA argues will cover technology costs and data-sharing obligations with global partners. But critics question whether the money will be transparently managed, given past controversies surrounding aviation revenue remittances. Aviation consultant Chinedu Eze said, “Nigeria’s aviation charges are among the highest in Africa. This policy risks pricing the country out of regional competition if not reviewed.” Stakeholders have called on the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to suspend the implementation pending further consultation. The abrupt closure has left several Alaska communities without scheduled passenger air service, raising concerns over rural connectivity in the state. In a message posted on the company’s website on Monday, Kenai Aviation owner Joel Caldwell said he was “devastated” by the decision but could no longer sustain operations amid mounting debt. “We have to cease all operations immediately. I am devastated,” Caldwell wrote. “Our operations may stop, but this vision continues… I believe that Flight 114 will board again. We need capital, we need partners, we need a lifeline.” Founded in 1959, Kenai Aviation originally supported Cook Inlet’s oil and gas operations before expanding into passenger and charter services across south-central Alaska. Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Emirates has announced measurable progress in reducing incidents of unexpected severe turbulence across its global operations through a combination of advanced data-sharing, artificial intelligence, and real-time weather intelligence platforms. The airline said its multi-layered approach developed over the past year has already led to a “significant reduction” in severe turbulence events encountered unexpectedly by its flight crews. The initiatives are designed to enhance passenger comfort and operational safety amid a rise in clear-air turbulence worldwide. According to the carrier’s media release, Emirates has integrated three core systems into its flight operations ecosystem: SkyPath, Lido mPilot, and IATA’s Turbulence Aware platform. SkyPath, a predictive turbulence-detection technology, uses sensor and accelerometer data from aircraft systems and even onboard iPads to identify and report turbulence in real time. The system analyses eddy dissipation rate (EDR) data and combines it with ADS-B signals to improve predictive accuracy. Lido mPilot, developed by Lufthansa Systems, provides Emirates pilots with live graphical overlays of turbulence, weather fronts, and convection zones within their Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications. It allows crews to visualise risk areas instantly and adjust routing decisions while airborne. The programme pools anonymised flight data from multiple airlines to create real-time turbulence maps accessible to participating carriers. “While turbulence can never be entirely eliminated, Emirates’ adoption of these predictive and collaborative systems is aimed at minimising exposure to unexpected severe events,” the airline said in its statement. The airline said it will continue refining its predictive systems as part of a wider strategy to use artificial intelligence and data analytics in operational decision-making. The next phase involves deeper integration of real-time turbulence data into dispatch planning and automated weather model calibration. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado on October 28, alleges that United neglected to act despite being alerted that a company pilot had engaged in criminal behavior involving the non-consensual sharing of explicit photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend, a United flight attendant. According to court filings, the plaintiff identified as Lisa Denson began working for United in 2015 and met Andrew Hill, a first officer at the airline, the following year. The lawsuit claims Hill coerced her into sending explicit photos and videos during their relationship and secretly recorded her on multiple occasions, including in uniform and during layovers. After their breakup, Hill allegedly uploaded those images to pornographic websites and shared them across social media platforms without her consent. Hill later pleaded guilty in 2024 to multiple felony counts, including distribution of intimate images, stalking, and online impersonation. According to aviation data provider OAG, total seat capacity in the region now stands 0.5% higher than in 2019, driven primarily by robust domestic markets in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. The authority has directed the airline to undertake corrective action after identifying “systemic failures” across multiple operational domains. The DGCA’s findings point to irregularities in Akasa Air’s flight safety systems, crew duty-time compliance, and internal safety audits. The regulator reportedly observed repetitive procedural lapses and documentation gaps, including delayed closure of internal audit findings and incomplete reviews of cockpit voice and flight data recorder (CVR/FDR) analyses. The regulator also highlighted discrepancies in the alignment of Akasa Air’s Safety Management System (SMS) manual with departmental manuals governing flight operations and engineering.
