According to the FAA, the airline failed to conduct required follow-up drug and alcohol testing for 11 employees, including pilots, flight attendants, and aircraft mechanics, who had previously tested positive for prohibited substances. The agency stated that these employees had tested positive for substances including marijuana, cocaine, and amphetamines, triggering strict federal requirements for return-to-duty clearance and long-term follow-up testing. However, investigators allege that Southwest allowed the affected personnel to resume safety-sensitive duties without completing the mandated follow-up testing process, a critical compliance requirement under federal aviation regulations. The FAA said the lapses occurred during multiple periods between August 2021 and July 2024, during which the employees continued performing operational roles such as flying aircraft, serving passengers, and maintaining equipment. Under U.S. aviation rules, employees who test positive must undergo a structured return-to-duty process, followed by unannounced follow-up testing for up to five years. The FAA alleges that Southwest did not fully comply with these requirements. The case highlights broader regulatory concerns around compliance oversight in safety-critical roles. FAA regulations impose strict limits, including a maximum blood alcohol level of 0.04% for pilots and mandatory waiting periods before duty, reflecting the high safety stakes in commercial aviation. Failure to enforce follow-up testing protocols undermines the system designed to ensure that employees remain fit for duty after substance-related violations. Southwest Airlines acknowledged the issue and stated that it takes its drug and alcohol testing responsibilities seriously, adding that it had already implemented enhanced procedures and stronger oversight measures more than two years ago. “We took immediate action more than two years ago to enhance our procedures and to strengthen oversight and accountability,” the airline said in a statement. The agreement marks one of the largest recent aircraft commitments by a Chinese carrier and further strengthens Airbus’ position in the country’s narrowbody market. The order includes a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR aircraft, which are designed to support both domestic and medium-haul international operations. China Eastern said the new aircraft will be deployed to enhance network efficiency and support long-term route expansion, particularly as travel demand continues to recover across key Asian markets. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028 and continue through 2032, following a phased delivery plan spread across five years. Under the schedule, nine aircraft will be delivered in 2028, followed by 19 in 2029, 30 in 2030, 27 in 2031, and 16 in 2032. The airline confirmed that the agreement remains subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals. As part of its fleet strategy, China Eastern plans to use the new aircraft for both expansion and replacement purposes. The airline expects to retire at least 53 older A320-family aircraft, many of which are nearing lease expiry or the end of their operational life. The carrier stated that the new-generation Airbus aircraft will offer improved fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and greater flexibility in network planning. These factors are expected to support the airline’s broader strategy of strengthening its domestic hub structure while gradually expanding select international routes. Although the deal is valued at $15.8 billion based on Airbus catalogue prices, industry norms suggest airlines typically receive significant discounts through negotiated purchase agreements, meaning the final transaction value is likely to be lower. In a statement, a spokesperson for China Eastern Airlines, said, "Following multiple rounds of commercial negotiations, the actual price of the aircraft transaction reached through negotiations between the Company and Airbus was significantly lower than the standard list price.” The order comes amid a broader trend of Chinese carriers renewing and expanding their fleets with Airbus aircraft, particularly the A320neo family, which continues to dominate short- and medium-haul operations in the region. The move also reflects sustained demand recovery in China’s aviation sector and long-term growth expectations for air travel across Asia-Pacific markets. China Eastern already operates one of the largest Airbus narrowbody fleets globally, and this latest order further consolidates its reliance on the A320 family as a core component of its operational strategy.

The Abu Dhabi-based flag carrier reported a profit after tax of AED 2.6 billion (US $698 million), a 47 % year-on-year increase compared with 2024. This marked the airline’s fourth consecutive year of profitability and reflected sustained demand across global markets. Etihad carried 22.4 million passengers in 2025, up 21 % year-on-year, supported by a 21 % increase in capacity and available seat kilometres (ASK) of 111.5 billion. Passenger load factor improved to 88.3 % (+2 percentage points), illustrating strong demand across its international network. Total revenue rose 21 % year-on-year to AED 30.7 billion (US $8.4 billion), driven by both passenger and cargo operations. Passenger revenue jumped 24 % to AED 25.8 billion (US $7.0 billion), while cargo revenue increased 8 % to AED 4.5 billion (US $1.2 billion), supported by higher capacity and cargo volumes that grew 9 % to more than 700,000 leg tonnes. Operating performance strengthened significantly. EBITDA climbed 37 % year-on-year to AED 6.3 billion (US $1.7 billion), resulting in a 20 % EBITDA margin (+2 percentage points). Etihad’s profit margin improved to 8.4 % (+1.5 percentage points), more than double the global airline industry average of 3.9 %, according to IATA estimates. Strong cash generation remained a hallmark of the year, with operating cash flow approaching AED 8.0 billion (more than US $2 billion). This enabled the airline to fully fund its capital expenditure requirements and reduce debt. Etihad expanded its operating fleet to 127 aircraft, the largest in its history, with 29 aircraft added during 2025. The enlarged fleet supported growth across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The airline’s network grew from 94 to 110 destinations, bolstering global connectivity and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s positioning as a major aviation hub. Etihad’s growth helped drive tourism to Abu Dhabi. Point-to-point traffic rose by 900,000 passengers to 5.5 million compared with 2024, while the stopover visitor count more than doubled to 170,000. The airline accounted for approximately 50 % of total passenger growth across UAE carriers in 2025, highlighting its central role in the nation’s air travel sector. Etihad continued investing in customer experience with product upgrades across cabins, digital enhancements and expanded services. Overall net promoter scores improved year-on-year. The airline also received more than 25 international awards for customer experience, safety and operational performance. Throughout 2025, Etihad welcomed more than 3,200 new employees and promoted around 2,200 staff, including new cabin crew and pilots, further strengthening its operational capabilities.
