New Delhi, India: Flight operations across several Indian carriers were disrupted on Tuesday after volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi eruption drifted toward major West Asia and India-bound air corridors. Airlines including Air India, Akasa Air and IndiGo cancelled or rerouted multiple flights as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an urgent advisory enforcing strict avoidance of ash-affected airspace. The DGCA directed airlines to steer clear of regions and flight levels identified as contaminated by volcanic ash. The regulator also instructed carriers to reassess flight plans, fuel requirements and alternates, and to file immediate reports of any suspected ash encounters. According to a regulatory filing by InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) found the airline in breach of rules after it implemented a Standard Instrument Departure (SID) and Instrument Flight Procedure (IFP) that had been internally formulated by the company rather than issued by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the only authorised body to publish such procedures. The DGCA stated that the airline’s actions violated Rule 133A of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, along with provisions of Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 9, Series C, Part I, specifically paragraphs 2.2 and 2.34, which mandate strict adherence to officially promulgated instrument procedures. InterGlobe confirmed that the communication from the DGCA was received on 17 November 2025. The sudden halt ended more than two decades of operations for the airline that connected Guernsey and Jersey with airports across the UK and parts of Europe. Blue Islands whose fleet consisted of ATR 72 turboprops grounded its aircraft as staff and passengers learned of the closure late on Friday. In its media statement the carrier said it regretted the disruption and advised customers with bookings to contact their booking agent or payment provider for refunds and further guidance. The airline also referred passengers with codeshare bookings to the partner carrier named on their ticket. Local authorities in the Channel Islands said they were urgently assessing the fallout for passengers and staff. The collapse said Blue Islands’ decision followed unsuccessful attempts to secure a last-minute financial lifeline. Reports indicate the Government of Jersey had been unable to provide further support, leaving the airline with no viable option but to suspend operations. The forecast, released ahead of the Dubai Airshow cycle, highlights the region’s accelerating demand for pilots, technicians, and cabin crew as airlines expand fleets and long-haul networks. Airbus estimates the need for 69,000 pilots, 64,000 aircraft technicians, and almost 132,000 cabin crew by 2044. The hiring surge aligns with a major increase in aircraft operating in the region. The in-service fleet, currently around 1,480 aircraft, is expected to grow to 3,700 within two decades. Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. Washington, United States: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially lifted its emergency order requiring airlines to cut scheduled flights at 40 major U.S. airports, ending one of the most disruptive regulatory measures imposed during the recent 43-day government shutdown. The mandate will cease at 6 a.m. ET on Monday, November 17, restoring normal operations for domestic carriers. The flight-reduction order introduced as air-traffic control staffing deteriorated during the shutdown initially authorized cuts of up to 10 percent across the affected airports. Airlines, however, rarely executed the full reductions, opting instead to maintain most of their schedules even as the FAA warned of fatigue-related risks inside control towers. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency removed the restrictions after “a sustained, measurable decline” in staffing-triggered incidents and absenteeism. He added that the system is now “stable enough” to resume full commercial operations. Before its termination, the FAA had gradually eased the mandate, lowering the required cuts from 10 percent to 6 percent on November 13, and then to 3 percent on November 14 as more controllers returned to duty following the shutdown’s end. Despite the emergency order, disruptions remained lower than expected. Airlines, which had argued the cuts were excessive, welcomed the full rollback. The removal of constraints also reinstates standard allowances for general aviation and space-launch operations previously curtailed at select airports. The shutdown’s impact on the air-traffic workforce remains a concern. Industry officials say the FAA is still roughly 3,500 controllers short of its staffing goals, a gap that magnified the shutdown’s effect and prompted the emergency mandate. With the order now lifted, major hub airports including those serving New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta are expected to return to normal scheduling patterns from Monday onward.
