Toulouse, France: Airbus has issued an urgent global recall of its A320 family aircraft after a serious mid-air flight-control incident raised safety concerns for thousands of jets worldwide. The recall directive affects roughly 6,000 aircraft, representing over half of the A320 fleet currently in operation, making it one of the most extensive fleet actions in recent aviation history. The action was prompted by an incident involving a JetBlue A320 on 30 October 2025, during which the aircraft experienced a sudden, uncommanded drop in altitude, forcing the crew to perform an emergency landing. While the flight landed safely, several passengers sustained minor injuries, and the event triggered an immediate investigation by Airbus and aviation safety authorities. Investigators concluded that intense solar radiation may have temporarily corrupted critical avionics data, affecting the aircraft’s flight-control systems. Importantly, the issue is software-related rather than structural, but it exposed vulnerabilities in the aircraft’s data-handling and flight-control architecture under extreme environmental conditions. In response, Airbus has mandated all operators apply a critical software update that reverts the flight-control systems to a proven, stable configuration. For most aircraft, the update can be performed within a few hours and the jets can return to service immediately. However, some older or heavily affected aircraft require hardware replacements to fully resolve the issue, which could keep them grounded for several days. The recall has already disrupted flight schedules worldwide, as airlines scramble to comply with the directive. Major operators, including IndiGo, Air India, American Airlines, Jetstar, and other carriers in Europe and Asia, have issued warnings of potential delays, cancellations, and rescheduling, especially for flights operated with A320-family aircraft. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), along with national aviation regulators, is closely monitoring compliance and providing guidance to ensure safety standards are maintained. Airbus has emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority and has pledged full cooperation with airlines to minimize operational disruption. Passengers flying on affected aircraft are advised to check directly with their airlines for updates. Airlines have indicated that most A320s will resume service within days, although some delays are expected to persist in the short term, particularly in regions with a high density of A320 operations. The Airbus A320 family, widely regarded as the backbone of short- and medium-haul commercial aviation, continues to operate safely in most circumstances. However, this recall represents a rare but significant safety precaution, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance, maintenance, and software management in the era of highly automated aircraft.

Hong Kong, China: Hong Kong’s Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) has released its preliminary findings into last month’s fatal runway excursion involving an Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 747-481BDSF, operated by ACT Airlines, which veered off Runway 07L and plunged into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport on 20 October. The newly published report provides the first detailed account of the aircraft’s final moments but stops short of assigning cause, in line with international aviation investigation standards. According to the AAIA, the freighter, operating as flight UAE9788 from Dubai World Central, completed a routine approach to Runway 07L shortly before 4 a.m. local time. The co-pilot had control of the aircraft during the landing, while the captain served as pilot monitoring. Weather conditions at the time were favourable, with visibility exceeding 10 kilometres and all navigation, communication, and surveillance systems functioning normally. No foreign object debris or airfield irregularities were reported prior to the landing. After touchdown, the aircraft began decelerating as expected until an “AUTOBRAKES” alert appeared on the Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System. In response, the captain immediately took control of the aircraft. Within moments, the 747 began an uncommanded drift to the left and subsequently departed the runway surface abeam Taxiway C6. The aircraft broke through the airfield perimeter fence and collided with a stationary airport security vehicle positioned on the service road outside the runway boundary. The force of the impact pushed the patrol vehicle into the sea, killing both security personnel inside. The 747 continued forward and came to rest partially submerged in the waters adjacent to the airport. Its tail section had separated during the violent sequence, and the aircraft was declared destroyed. All four crew members survived without injury. The preliminary report reveals critical details from the flight data recorder that may help explain the aircraft’s sudden loss of directional control. Investigators confirmed that the aircraft had been dispatched under the Minimum Equipment List with the No. 4 engine thrust reverser inoperative, a condition permissible under the operator’s regulatory framework. While engines No. 2 and 3 entered reverse thrust at approximately 95% N1 and engine No. 1 entered idle reverse, engine No. 4 behaved abnormally. Instead of providing reverse or idle thrust, the outboard right engine began accelerating rapidly in the forward direction, reaching 90% N1 shortly after touchdown. Within seconds, it surged even further, climbing to more than 106% N1 before the aircraft left the runway. The strong forward thrust from a single engine created a severe asymmetry during the critical landing roll. When investigators examined the flight deck after the accident, they found the thrust levers for engines 1, 2, and 3 fully closed with their reverse levers deployed to maximum. However, the No. 4 engine thrust lever was discovered in the full forward position, with its reverse lever also fully forward an unusual configuration that will be a major focus of the ongoing inquiry. The speed brake lever was in the flight detent position, and the autobrake selector had disarmed during the landing roll. The AAIA has already completed extensive work, including securing and analysing the wreckage, retrieving the flight recorders, reviewing air traffic control surveillance data, studying foreign object debris detection reports, and interviewing both the flight crew and duty controllers. The investigation is now concentrating on several areas: the technical behaviour of the aircraft’s systems and engines at the time of the accident, the source and implications of the forward movement of the No. 4 thrust lever, the performance of the aircraft’s braking and thrust-reversing systems, and potential human factors. Investigators are also reviewing maintenance records, operational procedures, and the airline’s safety management practices. The AAIA emphasised that the objective of the investigation is to prevent future accidents and not to apportion blame. A final report addressing the causes and contributing factors will be issued once the analysis is complete, a process that could take up to a year.

Hong Kong, China: A cargo aircraft operating for Emirates SkyCargo skidded off the north runway at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday, plunging partially into the sea and killing two ground personnel. The four crew members onboard the Boeing 747-400 freighter survived the crash. According to Hong Kong authorities, the accident occurred around 3:50 a.m. local time when the aircraft, identified as TC-ACF, overshot the runway after landing. The plane was operating flight EK9788 from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport on behalf of Emirates SkyCargo. The aircraft is owned and operated by ACT Airlines, a Turkish cargo carrier contracted by Emirates. Initial reports suggest that the aircraft struck a security patrol vehicle positioned near the runway end, forcing the vehicle into the sea. “Both occupants of the vehicle were pulled from the water,” police told Reuters, confirming that one person died at the scene and the other later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The four Turkish crew members aboard the aircraft were rescued without serious injuries. Photos and videos circulating on social media showed the jet partially submerged near the seawall, with the rear fuselage section visibly damaged. The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has temporarily closed the north runway to facilitate investigation and aircraft recovery operations. The airport’s two other runways continue to operate normally. An official investigation has been launched by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department. Authorities said they are examining multiple factors, including braking performance, runway conditions, and possible mechanical issues. Early reports indicate that weather conditions were stable at the time of landing, making it unlikely that visibility or wind played a major role. The Boeing 747-400 involved in the accident is 32 years old and had been converted from a passenger aircraft to a freighter several years ago. Emirates confirmed that the flight carried no cargo onboard during the incident. “This tragic incident has claimed the lives of two valued airport workers,” said an Emirates spokesperson, adding that the airline is cooperating fully with local authorities and expressing condolences to the victims’ families.
