A British Airways spokesperson said the crew members “have since recovered” and that the incident did not compromise passenger safety on the affected service. A replacement crew was deployed to operate the return flight to London while the original team was stood down and later transported back as passengers on a different service. British Airways has initiated a formal investigation to determine how the drug-infused sweets were brought aboard and whether aviation safety regulations were violated. Authorities are working to identify and locate the passenger involved. If apprehended, the individual could face multiple criminal charges related to drug distribution and endangering public safety. A source told the Hindustan Times that while passengers occasionally offer small gifts to crew members as a sign of thanks, this case has prompted the airline to review internal guidance on accepting food or gifts particularly international flights where legality of substances may differ across jurisdictions. There is no indication that the affected crew members will face disciplinary action, as they were unaware of the nature of the sweets they consumed. Passengers on board the original flight were unaffected, and operations continued as scheduled following the medical response.

Jakarta, Indonesia: Search and rescue teams in Indonesia have located the wreckage of a missing Indonesia Air Transport ATR 42-500 aircraft on the slopes of Mount Bulusaraung in South Sulawesi province, officials confirmed Sunday, as efforts intensify to find the remaining passengers and crew. The turboprop aircraft, chartered by Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for an aerial surveillance mission, lost contact with air traffic control at about 1:17 p.m. local time on January 17 while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, authorities said. Rescuers detecting debris from the aircraft on Sunday morning narrowed the search zone to a steep, forested area inside Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park. Ground teams located scattered wreckage including what are believed to be parts of the fuselage, tail section and windows around the peak of the mountain at approximately 8:02 a.m. local time. Later in the afternoon, a male victim’s body was recovered from a ravine around 200 meters deep, surrounded by aircraft debris, Makassar’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) announced. The victim is being evacuated via a challenging climbing route amid fog and rain. The initial report said there were 11 people on board, including eight crew members and three ministry officials. However, later revisions by Indonesian authorities indicated 10 individuals were aboard comprising seven crew and three passengers. The identities of those aboard, including crew and ministry personnel, have not yet been publicly released. Among the passengers were government officials conducting fisheries surveillance, a ministry statement confirmed. Rescue operations involve hundreds of personnel from Basarnas, the Indonesian military, police, marine units, volunteers and other agencies. Teams are navigating extremely rugged karst terrain, thick fog and heavy winds that continue to slow progress. Basarnas officials have established a one-kilometer search radius around the crash site and divided the area into multiple search zones to improve coordination. Helicopters, drones and ground units are deployed across sectors to cover difficult-to-reach areas. Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) has been notified and is expected to lead the investigation, including efforts to locate and recover the aircraft’s flight recorders (black boxes). Arizona, United States: A helicopter crash in remote terrain east of Phoenix claimed the lives of a seasoned Oregon pilot and his three young nieces on Jan. 2, 2026, just hours before he was scheduled to be married, authorities and family members said. The MD 369FF helicopter, piloted by 59-year-old David McCarty, crashed into rugged terrain in Telegraph Canyon, near Superior in Pinal County at around 11 a.m. local time, killing all four occupants. Family members said McCarty, originally from Oregon and a long-time resident of Queen Creek, Arizona, had taken his nieces Rachel McCarty (22), Faith McCarty (21) and Katelyn Heideman (21) on a sightseeing flight before his planned wedding later that afternoon. The bride-to-be, McCarty’s fiancée Joelleen Linstrom, was not aboard. According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, an eyewitness called 911 after seeing the helicopter strike what preliminary reports describe as a recreational slackline stretched across the canyon before it fell to the canyon floor. Deputies and rescue teams hiked into the remote area and reached the wreckage around 5 p.m. several hours after the crash. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Local family members posted tributes on social media, describing the losses as devastating. “Many have heard about the unimaginable losses in my family. They went out for a helicopter ride in Arizona. The helicopter crashed and they never got the chance to come home,” wrote Elizabeth Gallup, a relative of the victims. McCarty was the founder and owner of Columbia Basin Helicopters, a firm based in La Grande, Oregon, with work in aerial support for power-line construction, logging, firefighting and recovery operations. Family and colleagues described him as an experienced pilot familiar with the area’s terrain, having flown similar routes multiple times. The helicopter departed from Pegasus Airpark in Queen Creek before entering the mountainous landscape south of Superior, according to local reports. Preliminary investigation indicates the helicopter may have collided with a recreational slackline, more than half a mile long, strung across the canyon. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), along with the sheriff’s office, are jointly investigating the incident to determine how the slackline came to be placed in that airspace and whether proper aviation safety protocols were followed. The International Slackline Association confirmed the slackline had aviation markers and that a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) had been issued to warn aviators of the obstruction before the crash. No slackliners were on the line at the time of the accident. Officials said investigators will gather flight records, radar data, maintenance logs, weather information, witness statements and other evidence as part of the formal NTSB investigation. A spokesperson for the NTSB has stated that the agency will lead the effort to determine the probable cause. The FAA and other agencies have urged pilots flying in rugged and remote environments to review all Notices to Air Missions and to exercise heightened caution when navigating below canyon rims and near known obstructions.

Farrukhabad, India: A private jet operated by Jetserve Aviation Pvt Ltd skidded off the runway during takeoff at Mohammadabad airstrip in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district on Thursday. All six people onboard, including two pilots and four passengers, escaped unhurt. The aircraft, registered as VT-DEZ, reportedly veered off the runway and came to rest in nearby grass after skidding for nearly 400 metres. The incident occurred around noon when the jet was preparing to depart from the unregulated airstrip. According to reports, those onboard included Ajay Arora, Deputy Managing Director of Woodpecker Greenagri Nutrients Pvt Ltd; Sumit Sharma of the State Bank of India; Rakesh Tikku, Vice President (Operations); and Manish Kumar Pandey, the company’s Uttar Pradesh project head. The flight was being piloted by Nasib Baman and Prateek Fernandes. While no injuries were reported, the aircraft sustained minor structural damage, particularly in the nose section, which appeared to have tilted into the soil following the runway excursion. Officials said that low tyre pressure may have contributed to the incident. According to NDTV, local authorities stated that the pilot was aware of reduced tyre pressure prior to takeoff but proceeded nonetheless.
