Wuzhou, China: The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, operating a routine domestic service from Kunming to Guangzhou on March 21, 2022, was carrying 132 people, including 123 passengers and nine crew members. About an hour into the flight, while cruising at altitude, the aircraft suddenly entered a steep and rapid descent before plunging almost vertically into a mountainous, forested area in Guangxi. All 132 occupants were killed, and no survivors were found, marking China’s deadliest air crash. China’s aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, launched an investigation immediately after the crash, dispatching emergency teams to the remote impact site. Due to the aircraft’s U.S. manufacture, the investigation also involved international participants, including the National Transportation Safety Board, Boeing, and the Federal Aviation Administration, who provided technical assistance. A major breakthrough in the early phase of the investigation came with the recovery of both flight recorders. The cockpit voice recorder was located on March 23, 2022, followed by the flight data recorder, which was retrieved from deep within the crash debris days later. Both devices were severely damaged due to the high-impact crash and required detailed forensic analysis, including data extraction overseas. Preliminary examination of the data indicated that the aircraft descended rapidly from around 29,000 feet, briefly stabilized, and then entered a final near-vertical dive. Air traffic controllers attempted to contact the pilots multiple times during the descent, but no distress call was made and no response was received from the cockpit. In its preliminary report released in April 2022, the CAAC ruled out several common causes of aviation accidents. Investigators found no evidence of mechanical failure, adverse weather conditions, or dangerous cargo. The aircraft was deemed airworthy and properly maintained, while the flight crew were found to be qualified, adequately rested, and medically fit. Follow-up updates issued in 2023 and 2024 reiterated these findings, stating that no abnormalities had been identified in the aircraft systems, flight operations, or air traffic control procedures. Despite these findings, investigators have not been able to establish a definitive cause of the crash. A report published in 2022 by The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials familiar with black box analysis, suggested that the aircraft may have been intentionally put into a dive from the cockpit. However, Chinese authorities have not confirmed this interpretation and have cautioned against speculation, warning that unverified conclusions could mislead the public and interfere with the investigation. Under international aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, accident investigations are expected to produce an initial report within 30 days and a final report within one year wherever possible. In the case of MU5735, a preliminary report was issued within the required timeframe, but no final report has been released even after four years. The last official update from Chinese authorities came in March 2024, with no substantive developments disclosed since then. The prolonged delay has drawn attention from global aviation bodies, including the International Air Transport Association, which has emphasized the importance of timely accident reports in improving aviation safety worldwide. As of 2026, the investigation into Flight MU5735 remains officially ongoing. No confirmed cause has been identified, and no comprehensive final report has been made public.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a Boeing 777‑200ER registered as 9M‑MRO, departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 00:41 local time bound for Beijing with 239 people on board including passengers and crew from more than a dozen countries. Less than an hour after takeoff, the flight’s transponder and primary communications stopped transmitting. The aircraft disappeared from radar screens and was never seen again in normal flight tracking. Investigators later concluded from satellite data that MH370 likely diverted from its planned path westwards over the Strait of Malacca, continued for several hours, and ultimately went down in the southern Indian Ocean. In 2014, authorities from Malaysia, Australia and China launched the largest ocean search in aviation history, focusing on an area of the remote southern Indian Ocean based on satellite signal analysis. Aircraft, ships and underwater sonar scanning were deployed for years. Australia led an extensive seabed search that covered over 120,000 square kilometres, but found no main wreckage. That phase officially ended in January 2017. In the meantime, debris confirmed to be from MH370 washed ashore on various Indian Ocean coastlines, including Réunion Island, Mozambique and Madagascar. These pieces provided some confirmation of the aircraft’s fate but not the crash location. A 2018 Malaysian investigative report into the disappearance was inconclusive, failing to determine a definitive cause but leaving open the possibility that the aircraft was deliberately diverted from its flight path. After a long hiatus, the Malaysian government entered into a no find, no fee” agreement with marine exploration company Ocean Infinity meaning the firm would be paid up to US $70 million only if the wreckage was located. On 25 March 2025, Malaysia signed the agreement and identified a new search area of approximately 15,000 square kilometres of the southern Indian Ocean seabed. Search operations under this accord were conducted in two phases from March 25–28, 2025, and later from 31 December 2025 until 23 January 2026 resulting in 28 operational days scanning around 7,571 square kilometres of seabed using autonomous underwater drones and advanced sonar mapping. Despite these efforts, officials confirmed that the mission ended in January 2026 without any confirmed findings that would pinpoint the aircraft’s wreckage or flight recorders. The conclusion of the latest search, announced as the 12th anniversary of the disappearance approached, prompted renewed calls from families of the passengers and crew for continued efforts. The Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing ordered Malaysia Airlines and its international affiliate to pay over 2.9 million yuan (about US $410,000) in compensation to each of the families of eight passengers from Flight MH370 who were declared legally deceased. The award covers death compensation, funeral costs and damages for emotional distress, marking the first formal Chinese court decision on compensation for victims of the 2014 disappearance. Of the original 78 lawsuits filed by relatives of missing passengers, 47 were settled and withdrawn earlier, while 23 cases remain pending because some families have not completed the legal procedures to have passengers declared dead. The ruling comes as renewed search efforts for the aircraft resume in the southern Indian Ocean. Advocacy group Voice370 and relatives said they remain determined to pursue further search operations and urged the Malaysian government to extend Ocean Infinity’s contract beyond its planned expiry in mid‑2026. They also suggested considering other exploration firms under similar terms. In open letters, relatives criticised gaps in communication during the recent search and expressed ongoing grief over the lack of closure. With no confirmed discovery after repeated multinational search efforts spanning more than a decade, MH370 remains one of the most enduring mysteries in aviation. On 8 March 2014, Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 operating from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, disappeared from radar just under an hour after take-off with 239 people on board. Despite extensive international search efforts in the southern Indian Ocean and intermittent private expeditions, the main wreckage of the aircraft has never been found and the cause of its disappearance remains unresolved. The Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing ruled that Malaysia Airlines must pay 2.9 million yuan (approximately US$410,000) to each of the eight families whose relatives were aboard the flight and have now been legally declared dead. The compensation is intended to cover funeral expenses, emotional distress, and other financial losses, according to the court statement.
