Federal authorities intervened before the shipment could leave U.S. soil and detained the AHRS, effectively blocking the illegal export. U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon Scott E. Bradford described the operation as “a calculated, profit-driven scheme involving repeated transactions, substantial gains, and coordination with foreign co-conspirators, including sanctioned Russian entities.” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg emphasized that individuals who seek to circumvent export laws, especially for technologies with potential military applications, “will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Kaushik faced a federal grand jury indictment returned on November 20, 2024, on three counts related to conspiracy, attempted illegal export, and making false statements in connection with an export. At sentencing, the court took into account his guilty plea and cooperation, but highlighted the serious national security implications of the conduct. Legal analysts say the case underscores the rigorous enforcement of U.S. export control regulations, particularly amid heightened global tensions and sanctions against Russia. The DOJ and related enforcement agencies have signaled that they will continue to pursue individuals and entities that attempt to bypass controls designed to prevent sensitive technologies from reaching prohibited destinations. In a regulatory notice and enforcement restructuring published Tuesday, the department outlined changes that will reduce its reliance on large civil penalties and focus instead on compliance cooperation and operational improvements by carriers. The moves effectively soften the industry’s exposure to historically high fines tied to consumer protection violations. A notable early example of the new approach is the waiver of a remaining $11 million civil penalty owed by Southwest Airlines for its handling of an operational meltdown during the December 2022 holiday travel period. The airline had been ordered to pay the amount by Jan. 31, 2026, as part of a broader $140 million settlement related to violations of U.S. consumer-protection rules following widespread cancellations and delays that stranded millions of travelers. According to a letter from Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) to Air India officials, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that the pilot, identified as Captain Saurabh Kumar, reported for duty while under the influence of alcohol and was deemed unfit for the flight. Despite extensive international search efforts in the southern Indian Ocean and intermittent private expeditions, the main wreckage of the aircraft has never been found and the cause of its disappearance remains unresolved. The Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing ruled that Malaysia Airlines must pay 2.9 million yuan (approximately US$410,000) to each of the eight families whose relatives were aboard the flight and have now been legally declared dead. According to officials, the incident took place during the flight on Friday, November 28, when the accused passenger, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, allegedly touched the cabin crew member inappropriately during the journey. The flight landed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, where security agencies were alerted immediately after the complaint was received. Police said that after the aircraft landed, crew members discovered a handwritten note containing obscene and abusive remarks left behind on the passenger’s seat. The matter was escalated to airport security and local law enforcement, following which the accused was taken into custody for questioning. A formal case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to sexual harassment and use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty. The accused was produced before a local court and has been remanded to judicial custody, police added.
