New Delhi, India: India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is facing strong resistance from pilot unions after it approved a rule extending the maximum flight duty period for Boeing 787 crews by half an hour a move pilots warn could heighten fatigue and compromise flight safety. Under the revised guidelines, the DGCA has increased the permissible flight time for two-pilot operations on Boeing 787 aircraft from 10 hours to 10 hours 30 minutes, and the overall Flight Duty Period (FDP) from 13 hours to 14 hours. The amendment, issued late last week, comes just months before the regulator’s new fatigue management norms under Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) 2024 are scheduled to take effect. Pilot associations, including the Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA-India) and the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP), have urged the DGCA to immediately withdraw the extension, calling it “a dangerous precedent that undermines scientific fatigue management.” “This change ignores well-documented evidence linking fatigue with reduced alertness and safety margins, especially during long-haul night operations,” ALPA-India said in a statement. “The Boeing 787’s in-flight rest facilities are already inadequate due to seat recline restrictions, and any increase in flight duty time will directly affect pilot alertness.” The union referred to an FAA airworthiness directive that restricted the reclining function of cockpit rest seats on Boeing 787s, limiting proper rest opportunities for pilots during cruise segments. The Federation of Indian Pilots separately warned that any delay in implementing the full CAR 2024 fatigue norms which had been promised in court could amount to contempt of court. The federation said the DGCA had earlier assured the Bombay High Court that it would enforce the revised duty-time limitations to align with international best practices. As the implementation date for CAR 2024 nears, pilot groups insist that fatigue management should remain rooted in science not scheduling convenience. “Adding half an hour to an already stretched limit is not operational flexibility; it’s operational fatigue,” one senior wide-body pilot told. A DGCA official maintained that the amendment was based on operational data and “falls within safe international norms.” The regulator also reiterated that the upcoming CAR 2024 norms would introduce a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) to supplement prescriptive duty limits with data-driven fatigue monitoring.

Denver, United States: United Airlines is facing a major federal lawsuit filed by a former flight attendant who accuses the carrier of failing to protect her from years of harassment and exploitation after one of its pilots allegedly distributed her private, intimate images online. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado on October 28, alleges that United neglected to act despite being alerted that a company pilot had engaged in criminal behavior involving the non-consensual sharing of explicit photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend, a United flight attendant. According to court filings, the plaintiff identified as Lisa Denson began working for United in 2015 and met Andrew Hill, a first officer at the airline, the following year. The lawsuit claims Hill coerced her into sending explicit photos and videos during their relationship and secretly recorded her on multiple occasions, including in uniform and during layovers. After their breakup, Hill allegedly uploaded those images to pornographic websites and shared them across social media platforms without her consent. Hill later pleaded guilty in 2024 to multiple felony counts, including distribution of intimate images, stalking, and online impersonation. Despite an active police investigation and a search warrant served to United in April 2024, the airline did not suspend or terminate Hill until his arrest three months later, the complaint alleges. “The company’s inaction enabled continued harm to Ms. Denson, despite clear evidence of ongoing criminal conduct by a uniformed employee,” the lawsuit states. Denson’s attorneys argue that United failed to implement or enforce adequate safeguards and training programs to prevent sexual harassment and digital misconduct among its workforce. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as a court order requiring the airline to overhaul its harassment prevention policies. United Airlines has not yet filed a formal response to the new complaint. The lawsuit, filed under case number 1:25-cv-03403, could have far-reaching implications for airline liability in cases involving off-duty misconduct by flight crew members.

Washington, United States: The family of a passenger killed in January’s midair collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport has filed the first federal lawsuit over the disaster, naming American Airlines, its regional affiliate PSA Airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the U.S. Army as defendants. The complaint, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, comes from Rachel Crafton, whose husband, Casey Crafton, was among the 67 people killed when American Eagle Flight 5342 collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 29. The crash, which occurred at low altitude just half a mile from the runway, killed all 64 people aboard the Embraer E175 regional jet and all three Army crew members on the helicopter. Crafton’s lawsuit accuses the defendants of negligence and wrongful death, arguing that the tragedy was both predictable and preventable. The 115-page filing cites more than 30 documented near misses in the crowded D.C. airspace that, according to the suit, were ignored by regulators and operators. The enforcement action covers violations identified between September 2023 and February 2024 at Boeing’s Renton, Washington facility and at Spirit AeroSystems’ plant in Wichita, Kansas. According to the FAA, Boeing presented two aircraft as airworthy for certification even though they did not meet all applicable safety requirements, and in some cases pressured employees to approve work to meet production deadlines. “The safety of the flying public is our top priority, and we will hold Boeing accountable for meeting regulatory standards,” the FAA said in a statement, noting that Boeing has 30 days to respond to the proposed penalty. The proposed fine comes months after a highly publicized incident in January 2024 when a door plug panel blew off an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 shortly after takeoff, forcing an emergency landing. Boeing, in its response, said it is reviewing the FAA’s notice and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening quality oversight,“We have implemented a comprehensive safety and quality improvement plan, including expanded employee training and enhanced supplier oversight,” a Boeing spokesperson said, adding that the company will continue cooperating with regulators. Boeing has until mid-October to formally respond, after which the FAA could negotiate a settlement or pursue enforcement proceedings. Alongside the regulatory action the FAA has approved Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) Phase 2D for Boeing’s 777-9 model, advancing the aircraft’s certification process. This phase includes community noise tests to be carried out in Glasgow, Montana. So far, the 777X test fleet (including the 777-9) has logged over 1,500 flights and nearly 4,200 flight hours. The next major step TIA Phase 3 will include evaluations of the auxiliary power unit (APU) performance and overall stability, although a start date for Phase 3 has not yet been announced. The 777-9 is currently expected to be delivered first to Lufthansa in mid-2026.
