Hong Kong, China: A cargo aircraft operating for Emirates SkyCargo skidded off the north runway at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday, plunging partially into the sea and killing two ground personnel. The four crew members onboard the Boeing 747-400 freighter survived the crash. According to Hong Kong authorities, the accident occurred around 3:50 a.m. local time when the aircraft, identified as TC-ACF, overshot the runway after landing. The plane was operating flight EK9788 from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport on behalf of Emirates SkyCargo. The aircraft is owned and operated by ACT Airlines, a Turkish cargo carrier contracted by Emirates. Initial reports suggest that the aircraft struck a security patrol vehicle positioned near the runway end, forcing the vehicle into the sea. “Both occupants of the vehicle were pulled from the water,” police told Reuters, confirming that one person died at the scene and the other later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The four Turkish crew members aboard the aircraft were rescued without serious injuries. Photos and videos circulating on social media showed the jet partially submerged near the seawall, with the rear fuselage section visibly damaged. The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has temporarily closed the north runway to facilitate investigation and aircraft recovery operations. The airport’s two other runways continue to operate normally. An official investigation has been launched by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department. Authorities said they are examining multiple factors, including braking performance, runway conditions, and possible mechanical issues. Early reports indicate that weather conditions were stable at the time of landing, making it unlikely that visibility or wind played a major role. The Boeing 747-400 involved in the accident is 32 years old and had been converted from a passenger aircraft to a freighter several years ago. Emirates confirmed that the flight carried no cargo onboard during the incident. “This tragic incident has claimed the lives of two valued airport workers,” said an Emirates spokesperson, adding that the airline is cooperating fully with local authorities and expressing condolences to the victims’ families.

Doctors suspected Adult-Onset Still’s Disease (AOSD), a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by high fevers, salmon-colored rashes, sore throat, joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. The condition affects roughly 1 in 100,000 people worldwide and can lead to severe complications such as pericarditis, pneumonia, or macrophage activation syndrome, which carries a high mortality rate. New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, India’s largest airline, for alleged lapses in its pilot training programme. The regulator found that the airline had used unqualified flight simulators to train pilots operating flights to Category C aerodromes, which are considered challenging due to terrain and approach conditions. According to the filing, the alleged non-compliance relates to the airline’s “failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes.” These airports include Calicut, Mangaluru, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl, Shimla, and international locations such as Kabul and Kathmandu. Aviation experts said that Category C airports require pilots to undergo specific simulator training replicating the topography and terrain of those airfields. “A qualified simulator must realistically depict the local geography, altitude, and approach pattern. Using a generic simulator can affect pilot readiness for critical airports like Leh or Calicut,” said Captain Anil S. Rao, President of the All India Pilots Association, in comments to The New Indian Express. In its statement, IndiGo said the fine would have no material impact on its operations and that it would contest the DGCA order before the appropriate appellate authority. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest training standards and operational safety,” the airline said. The DGCA’s order, dated September 26, 2025, stated that IndiGo failed to comply with simulator certification standards while conducting recurrent training for pilots assigned to operate at high-risk airports. The penalty was disclosed by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, in its filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. Chief Executive Carsten Spohr emphasized the need for structural change, noting that consolidation of overlapping functions and the use of digital tools will “make the group more competitive and resilient.” The announcement sparked criticism from German labor unions. Among its subsidiaries, Lufthansa Technik alone planned to add over 2,000 staff, while Austrian Airlines and Eurowings each aimed to hire roughly 700 employees. The group reported that in 2024 it had onboarded more than 13,000 new employees and, over a three-year period, had hired over 30,000 staff globally.
