Melawi, Indonesia: All eight people on board a helicopter were killed after the aircraft crashed in a remote, forested area of Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province, authorities confirmed on Friday, following an overnight search operation that located the wreckage in difficult terrain. The aircraft, identified as an Airbus H130 helicopter operated by Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact shortly after takeoff on Thursday morning while flying within Melawi district in Borneo island. According to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the helicopter disappeared from radar approximately five minutes after departure from a plantation helipad and was later found crashed about 3 kilometres from its last known contact point, in a densely forested and hilly area. “The location of the crash or loss of contact is in a densely forested area with steep hilly terrain,” said Mohammad Syafii, head of Basarnas, as quoted by Reuters. Officials confirmed that the aircraft carried six passengers and two crew members, all of whom died in the crash. The 2 crew members were identified as Pilot in Command, Captain Marindra W, and Engineer on Board, Harun Arasyid along with 6 passengers Patrick K, Victor T, Charles L, Joko C, Fauzie O, and Sugito. Rescue teams recovered wreckage, including parts believed to be the tail section of the helicopter, during the search operation involving military and police units. The plantation area from which the helicopter departed is reportedly owned by the palm oil company Citra Mahkota, according to rescue officials cited in international reports. Search and recovery efforts were significantly slowed due to dense jungle terrain and steep hills, forcing rescue teams to rely on combined aerial reconnaissance and ground movement through difficult forest access routes. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Investigators are currently examining all possible factors, including mechanical failure and weather conditions, though no official conclusion has been released. “The cause of the crash remains unclear,” Basarnas officials said, confirming that a full investigation is underway.

The critically injured passenger, identified in local reports as an elderly man, 65, a resident of Lalitpur named Kaji Bahadur, suffered injuries to his leg and eye and was immediately airlifted to Kathmandu for advanced medical treatment using another helicopter dispatched from the same operator. The helicopter was carrying the lifeless body of Manalakshmi Rai, 77, a resident of Balabensi who passed away a month ago in the UK. The body as reported was being brought by her relatives for cremation. Also on board the helicopter were the deceased’s husband, Dakmani Rai, 83, son Balkumar Rai, 53, daughter Laxmi Rai, 47 and 40-year-old Samala Rai. Officials confirmed that all passengers along with the pilot Sabin Thapa were safely rescued from the crash site. Local residents, along with emergency responders, quickly reached the site and helped evacuate all occupants. Another Air Dynasty helicopter was deployed to transport the injured passenger and pilot to Kathmandu for treatment. Officials confirmed that emergency response operations were completed within a short time after the incident. The helicopter involved belongs to Air Dynasty Heli Service Pvt. Ltd., one of Nepal’s private helicopter operators frequently used for medical, rescue, and charter flights in mountainous regions. "One passenger on board the helicopter has been injured. The pilot and other passengers are safe. Another helicopter with registration number 9N-ANA has also been dispatched for the rescue of the injured passenger," the helicopter company announced in a statement. The airline contributed VND 3.29 trillion to the State budget, a 5 percent year-on-year increase, underscoring its expanding role in supporting Vietnam’s broader economic recovery and growth. Looking ahead, Vietnam Airlines plans to build on the momentum of 2025 by enhancing operational efficiency and financial performance. For 2026, the carrier is targeting: 29.07 million passengers, a 13.2 percent increase over 2025. Approximately 13 percent growth in available seat kilometres to tap into rising demand across the Asia-Pacific aviation market. The aircraft, a Beechcraft AT-6TH Wolverine, went down at approximately 10:20 a.m. local time in a remote training area of Chom Thong district, about 60 kilometres southwest of Chiang Mai International Airport, according to RTAF spokesperson Air Marshal Chakkrit Thammavichai. The plane was on a combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) training flight when it crashed into a forested hillside near Ban Huai Fang village, officials said. Rescue teams were alerted at 10:48 a.m. and reached the site, which was reported to be largely inaccessible by road, requiring responders to hike through rugged terrain. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the aircraft engulfed in flames with debris scattered over a roughly 20-metre radius, and a crater reportedly formed at the impact point. The single-engine turboprop, registered PK-SNS, had departed from Douw Aturure Airport (NBX) bound for Kaimana Airport (KNG) shortly after noon local time. Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew detected a technical issue with the aircraft’s engine, prompting the captain to attempt a return to the departure airport. With engine thrust diminishing, the pilot executed an emergency landing at the Logpond Kaladiri area, a shallow coastal waterway adjacent to the airport.
