The scramble for personnel comes amid tighter safety rules on flight duty times and a recent operational disruption at the country’s largest airline. The roster crisis first became widely visible earlier in December, when IndiGo operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd cancelled thousands of flights due to crew unavailability following the implementation of stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These rules, aimed at improving pilot rest and reducing fatigue, require longer rest periods and limit the number of night landings, increasing the number of pilots needed for scheduled services. According to TOI, both IndiGo and the Air India group have entered a fierce competition to recruit experienced captains, with some offers reportedly including joining bonuses of up to ₹50 lakh to attract talent from rivals or international carriers. Such incentives rarely seen at this scale in Indian aviation reflect the acute need for senior pilots capable of leading flight operations across domestic and international routes. Earlier IndiGo has informed the DGCA that it plans to add about 100 pilots in January, while Air India has launched new hiring drives. However, both carriers are dealing with a rise in captain departures, some moving overseas sharpening the recruitment battle as airlines work to meet required crew levels. A senior airline executive quoted by TOI described the situation as exceptionally intense, noting that carriers are actively poaching captains from each other and bracing for continued shortages as FDTL norms reduce the pool of available crew. In response to the operational stress and pilot attrition, IndiGo has announced a revision of pilot compensation, including increases in domestic layover, deadhead, night flying, transit, and newly introduced tail-swap allowances, effective January 1, 2026. Communication from the airline’s flight operations leadership details the enhanced pay structure for both captains and first officers. India is set to see an intense contest for captains between the Air India group and IndiGo. While Air India does not currently face a pilot shortage across most of its fleet, barring the Boeing 787, it must recruit for future growth. IndiGo, meanwhile, will need to strengthen pilot–management relations to retain and attract talent. Akasa does not require additional pilots as it has a surplus. Unless Air India and IndiGo offer improved working conditions, they risk continued pilot migration to the Middle East and destinations such as Vietnam,” said Captain Shakti Lumba, former vice president of Air India and IndiGo. Pilot Availability and Recruitment Plan For its Airbus fleet, IndiGo reported 2,357 captains and 2,194 first officers as of December. The airline plans to bolster its crew numbers in the coming months as follows: By end-December 2025: 25 captains and 35 first officers January 2026: 28 captains and 35 first officers By February 10, 2026: 15 captains and 20 first officers This recruitment would raise the total to 2,425 captains and 2,284 first officers by the February compliance date. As per its FY25 annual report, IndiGo had 5,456 pilots in total, including captains and first officers. India’s civil-aviation regulator, DGCA, has granted a one-time relaxation of certain night-duty and crew-rest provisions under the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms to help stabilize operations after hundreds of flight cancellations last week by IndiGo. The relaxation, valid until 10 February 2026, covers night-flying limits and allows leave to count as part of weekly rest periods. The disruption began after the second phase of FDTL norms took effect on 1 November 2025, introducing stricter duty-hour caps, night-flying restrictions, and extended weekly rest measures to reduce pilot fatigue and improve safety. Airlines struggled with roster planning and crew availability under the new rules, leading to widespread cancellations. Thousands of passengers at major airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad faced delays, long queues, and frustration. Airlines warned disruptions would continue for a few more days and began scaling down operations from 8 December to restore normal service. To manage crew shortages, IndiGo announced it would cancel 300–400 flights daily between 5 and 8 December to reset its roster, followed by a revised schedule from 10 to 31 December. Analysts have flagged that the scale and speed of recruitment may be difficult to achieve. Elara Securities estimates IndiGo may need to hire at least 900 pilots to comply fully by February. “Meeting this target could be challenging, as poaching talent is difficult due to long notice periods, six months for co-pilots and 12 months for captains,” said Gagan Dixit, Senior Vice President at Elara Securities. Mark D Martin, CEO of Martin Consulting, added that immediate availability remains a key constraint, noting that foreign pilot hiring requires a minimum of three months for regulatory clearances. IndiGo operates 417 aircraft, including A320s, ATRs, a Boeing jet on wet lease, and freighters. Nearly 40 A320 aircraft remain grounded due to engine issues with Pratt & Whitney, reducing the effective A320 fleet to about 325 aircraft. These aircraft are flown for about 14 hours daily, significantly higher than the industry norm of 8.5 hours. At this utilisation, IndiGo requires 17 pilot-and-copilot sets per aircraft, versus the usual 14. Martin Consulting estimates the crew requirement at 5,525, while DGCA filings show 4,551 crew available in December, a shortfall of 974 pilots. IndiGo operates with 2.5 pilots per departure, compared to 5.4 pilots for Air India and Akasa Air. This reflects both IndiGo’s fleet concentration on narrow-body A320s and higher aircraft utilisation. The airline’s heavy reliance on high-utilisation A320 operations means that each additional flying hour amplifies its pilot requirement. With nearly 40 aircraft grounded, IndiGo is attempting to maintain schedules with fewer pilots, compounding the challenge just as night-operation curbs tighten. Analysts warn that bridging the gap will require aggressive recruitment, expedited training, and regulatory approvals, all while maintaining operational safety.

The airline said it was “considering its options” and warned passengers not to travel to airports unless they had made alternative arrangements. The sudden halt ended more than two decades of operations for the airline that connected Guernsey and Jersey with airports across the UK and parts of Europe. Blue Islands whose fleet consisted of ATR 72 turboprops grounded its aircraft as staff and passengers learned of the closure late on Friday. In its media statement the carrier said it regretted the disruption and advised customers with bookings to contact their booking agent or payment provider for refunds and further guidance. The airline also referred passengers with codeshare bookings to the partner carrier named on their ticket. Local authorities in the Channel Islands said they were urgently assessing the fallout for passengers and staff. The collapse said Blue Islands’ decision followed unsuccessful attempts to secure a last-minute financial lifeline. Reports indicate the Government of Jersey had been unable to provide further support, leaving the airline with no viable option but to suspend operations. Regional operators moved quickly to plug gaps left by Blue Islands. Loganair announced it would operate flights on several former Blue Islands routes and offer special “rescue fares” to help stranded travellers, with services planned between Jersey, Guernsey and key UK airports from as early as the weekend following the suspension. Aurigny and other operators also confirmed they were coordinating to provide additional capacity where possible. Passengers affected by cancellations were advised by the airline and local broadcasters not to travel to airports unless they had confirmed onward travel. Those seeking refunds were told to contact the company they booked through or their card issuer. Industry guidance also suggested passengers on package holidays contact their tour operator. Blue Islands’ collapse comes amid a turbulent period for small regional carriers in the UK market, following other recent failures that have reduced seat capacity on short-haul and island routes. Analysts say a combination of rising operating costs, labour pressures and thin margins for short regional sectors has left several carriers exposed. The immediate priorities for governments and airports will be to restore reliable services for island communities and to manage the economic and employment impact.

Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. By 2030, aviation-linked employment is expected to rise to 816,000 jobs, representing nearly one in four positions in Dubai. The ongoing expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to generate 132,000 additional jobs and contribute more than AED 6.1 billion to Dubai’s GDP by the end of the decade. Training academies, maintenance providers, and regulatory authorities will need to scale rapidly to match the demand. The region’s major carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Saudia have already begun large recruitment drives, signalling strong near-term hiring momentum even before long-term growth peaks.
