Chandigarh, India: A potentially serious aviation incident was narrowly avoided at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport on May 5 after a passenger’s power bank caught fire onboard an IndiGo flight shortly after landing, prompting panic and an emergency evacuation that left six people injured. The incident involved flight 6E-108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh, which had already landed and was taxiing toward the bay when the fire broke out inside the cabin. According to officials, the fire originated from a power bank stored in a seat pocket by a passenger seated in row 39C. The device suddenly ignited, producing smoke and flames that quickly spread inside the aircraft cabin. “After landing during a taxi into the bay at Chandigarh, a Power Bank kept in a pouch in the seat pocket by a passenger seated on 39C caught fire,” officials said. Passengers onboard reported a sudden build-up of smoke, triggering panic. “There was smoke in the cabin and people began panicking,” a passenger said. The cabin crew responded immediately, using onboard fire extinguishers to contain the blaze. “Cabin Crew used two fire extinguisher bottles to extinguish the fire,” officials said. As a precautionary measure, the crew initiated a full emergency evacuation, deploying all six slides. The aircraft was carrying around 198 passengers and six crew members, all of whom were evacuated safely. However, six passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation and were taken to hospital. The injuries were reported to be minor and largely occurred while using the evacuation slides. “All passengers and crew were safely evacuated,” officials said. Passenger Kapoor said several elderly travellers required medical attention. Ajay Verma, CEO of Chandigarh International Airport, said, “Emergency response teams acted immediately after the incident was reported, and all necessary protocols were followed to ensure passenger safety,” said. He added that airport authorities worked in coordination with airline staff and emergency services to manage the situation efficiently. Passengers described chaotic scenes during the evacuation and raised concerns over safety measures onboard. “Had this happened mid-air, it could have been much worse,” a passenger said. Some travellers also questioned the screening of electronic devices, particularly power banks, before boarding. Passengers alleged that airline staff failed to properly regulate the use and monitoring of power banks onboard, raising concerns about enforcement of safety norms. Some travellers questioned whether stricter checks or clearer instructions could have prevented the incident, pointing out that portable electronic devices, particularly lithium-ion batteries, pose known fire risks if not handled correctly. They urged airlines to reinforce guidelines and ensure better awareness among passengers regarding the safe storage and use of such devices during flights In its official statement, IndiGo confirmed the incident and reiterated its commitment to safety. “On 5 May 2026, while IndiGo flight 6E 108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh was stationary after landing, an incident involving a customer's personal electronic equipment catching fire was reported,” the airline said. “In the interest of safety, an immediate evacuation was carried out and all the relevant authorities were immediately informed. All customers have been safely moved to the terminal and are being attended to by the team to ensure their well-being. The aircraft will undergo necessary checks before resuming operations. At IndiGo, the safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority,” the airline added. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess adherence to safety protocols. The incident shows the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly power banks, which are known to pose fire hazards under certain conditions. Importantly, the fire occurred after the aircraft had landed, preventing what could have been a far more dangerous mid-air situation. Swift action by the cabin crew and airport emergency teams ensured the situation was contained without serious injuries. However, the incident has raised concerns regarding the handling and monitoring of portable electronic devices on flights.

Flight AC1502, an Airbus A321 bound for Moncton, New Brunswick, had begun taxiing for departure when passengers seated toward the rear reported hearing screaming and banging sounds emanating from beneath the cabin. Several travellers notified flight attendants, who investigated and subsequently halted the aircraft’s progress. In a video shared on social media and verified by local media, the aircraft captain addressed passengers after the taxi was stopped. “I’ve never had that in my life. First time, hopefully first and last,” the pilot said, noting that the trapped individual was safely removed. According to Air Canada, the cargo doors were inadvertently closed while the ground crew member was still inside the hold, and he was discovered only after the plane had already begun to taxi. Emergency procedures were activated, and the aircraft immediately returned to the departure gate. The airline confirmed no injuries were reported and that the employee was freed from the cargo compartment without harm. In a statement to the media, Air Canada said it has “reinforced our procedures with our ground crews” to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future. Passengers described the incident as unsettling. One traveller told CBC that the sounds from the hold were unmistakable and that flight attendants initially checked other areas of the aircraft before determining the source. The flight ultimately did not depart for Moncton as scheduled. Passengers were informed that the delay was beyond the control of the airline and that arrangements would be made for later travel.

New Delhi, India: Flight operations across several Indian carriers were disrupted on Tuesday after volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi eruption drifted toward major West Asia and India-bound air corridors. Airlines including Air India, Akasa Air and IndiGo cancelled or rerouted multiple flights as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an urgent advisory enforcing strict avoidance of ash-affected airspace. The DGCA directed airlines to steer clear of regions and flight levels identified as contaminated by volcanic ash. The regulator also instructed carriers to reassess flight plans, fuel requirements and alternates, and to file immediate reports of any suspected ash encounters. The advisory highlighted the risk to aircraft engines and airframes, and asked operators to conduct additional inspections for any aircraft that may have flown near the affected zones. Airports were simultaneously ordered to check runways, aprons and taxiways for possible ash contamination and initiate cleaning procedures if required. Air India cancelled 11 flights over the past 24 hours, stating that precautionary checks were needed on aircraft that might have traversed areas close to the ash plume. The airline said it was monitoring volcanic-ash advisories in coordination with international aviation agencies and had not observed any major operational impact beyond temporary cancellations. At least six flights including services from Mumbai and southern metros were grounded as a precaution. Volcanic ash can severely damage aircraft by melting inside engines, clogging ventilation systems and affecting sensors. Following ICAO protocols, Indian carriers have shifted flight paths and temporarily halted services operating along westbound routes that intersect the plume’s trajectory. Although the ash cloud was observed at high altitudes reducing the likelihood of direct impact on surface visibility, aviation authorities stressed that even small concentrations can be hazardous for high-altitude jet operations. Meteorological agencies indicated that the ash plume continued its eastward movement toward China after passing over northern India. Airlines said normal operations would resume once updated advisories confirm the clearing of affected corridors. Indian regulators and carriers remain on heightened watch, treating the event as a significant international air-safety incident requiring continuous monitoring.

Mumbai, India: On the morning of November 1, 2025, a security threat email forced the diversion of IndiGo flight 6E 68, operating from Jeddah to Hyderabad. The email sent to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad alleged the presence of a “human bomb” onboard and claimed that operatives of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Inter‑Services Intelligence (ISI) had “planned a major 1984 Madras Airport modus operandi style blast”. After receiving the threat at approximately 5:30 a.m. IST, airport authorities alerted all relevant stakeholders. The flight was diverted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai) where it landed safely. Following normal security protocol, checks were carried out at Mumbai and Hyderabad under cooperation of the airline and security agencies. No suspicious items or individuals were found. A case has been registered by the police and investigation is ongoing. In a statement, IndiGo confirmed receipt of the threat for flight 6E 68 from Jeddah to Hyderabad on November 1, and noted the aircraft diversion to Mumbai in consultation with authorities. The airline said it informed relevant agencies immediately and conducted appropriate security checks before resuming operations. It also stated efforts were made to minimise inconvenience to passengers, including offering refreshments and regular updates. According to aviation tracker flightradar24, the flight was to land in Hyderabad at 9.10 am, but was diverted to Mumbai after the threat. The flight took off after the checks and reached Hyderabad around 4 pm.
