New Delhi, India: India’s maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sector is set for sustained growth, with the market expected to reach $5.7 billion by 2030, up from an estimated $4.4 billion in 2025, according to a study report by Alan Lim and Joshua Ng, Directors of Singapore-based Alton Aviation Consultancy and aviation industry veterans. The report estimates a compound annual growth rate of about 5.4 percent, supported by rapid fleet expansion, increasing passenger traffic, and ongoing policy support aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation ecosystem. India’s commercial aircraft fleet is projected to expand significantly, crossing 1,800 aircraft by 2030. The growth will be led by narrow-body aircraft, which are expected to nearly double in number from over 700 currently to more than 1,300 within the decade. Beyond MRO growth, India is advancing a broader aerospace ecosystem to sustain long-term aviation expansion. “The government has set ambitious targets to expand domestic passenger traffic, increase the number of operational airports, and strengthen workforce and manufacturing capabilities, supported by large scale investments in airport infrastructure and new greenfield developments,” said Lim. Ng added, “Special economic zones, including GIFT City, are being positioned to anchor aircraft leasing.” Airlines in India have also placed substantial aircraft orders, with over 500 deliveries expected in the next five years, indicating a steady rise in maintenance demand across the aviation value chain. India’s airport infrastructure expansion continues to gather pace, with Navi Mumbai International Airport already operational since December 2025 and Noida International Airport set to begin operations in 2026, offering initial capacities of 12 million and 20 million passengers annually, respectively. Further capacity additions are underway with Dholera International Airport, targeted for completion by December 2026, and Bhogapuram International Airport, expected by June 2026, backed by significant planned investments. The study highlights that engine maintenance will contribute nearly half of the total MRO demand, making it the dominant segment in the market. At the same time, airframe maintenance and modification services are expected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period. Global and domestic players are accelerating investments in India’s MRO ecosystem. Safran has inaugurated a €200 million LEAP engine MRO facility in Hyderabad to strengthen next-generation engine overhaul capabilities. IndiGo, in collaboration with Bengaluru International Airport, has also begun developing a dedicated MRO facility to support its growing fleet. Meanwhile, Thales has expanded its presence with a new avionics MRO facility, while the Adani Group has strengthened its position in the sector through the acquisitions of Air Works and AAR-Indamer Technics. Higher aircraft utilisation and increased flight frequencies are likely to drive more frequent maintenance cycles, particularly for engines and structural components. The government’s ongoing push to expand aviation infrastructure is expected to play a critical role in supporting the sector. Plans to develop over 100 additional airports in the coming years are set to take the total number of airports in India to more than 200 by 2030. This expansion, along with improved regional connectivity and continued growth of low-cost carriers, is expected to sustain long-term demand for MRO services. The report notes that recent policy measures including tax rationalisation, liberalised foreign investment norms, and initiatives to strengthen aircraft leasing and financing are improving the overall operating environment for MRO providers in India. These reforms are aimed at enhancing cost competitiveness and encouraging global players to establish or expand their MRO operations in the country, while reducing dependence on overseas facilities.

Hyderabad, India: Asia’s largest civil aviation exhibition, Wings India 2026, ended on a high note this week with a string of strategic Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and partnership deals that reinforce India’s ambition to deepen domestic aerospace manufacturing, expand skills and training infrastructure, and strengthen regional connectivity. Indian conglomerate Adani Defence & Aerospace and Brazil’s Embraer S.A. signed a landmark MoU to collaborate on establishing a regional transport aircraft ecosystem in India. The agreement focuses on jointly developing an aircraft assembly capability and related aerospace supply chain and services. Under the framework: A regional aircraft final assembly line is to be set up in India. Cooperation will extend to aftermarket support, pilot training and progressively increasing local content in production. Financial terms, production timelines, specific aircraft models or the location of the facility have not been disclosed in the initial MoU. At the show, Flamingo Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. signed an agreement with United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) of Russia for the delivery of six Ilyushin IL‑114‑300 regional turboprop aircraft. The deal targets India’s domestic regional connectivity market and represents a step towards operationalising heavier regional aircraft within the UDAN framework. The aircraft, seating approximately 68 passengers, are slated for delivery beginning in 2028. The pact includes collaboration on certification, entry‑into‑service preparations and training. Vadim Badekha, CEO, UAC, said India is central to the company’s civil aviation ambitions. “We consider that the Indian market has great potential for us. And a key factor in achieving success is being a part of the Make in India programme,” he said. Stressing the depth of the proposed industrial partnership, Badekha added, “That’s very important, that it’s not just the supply, just the sale of the aircraft, but the joint production of them in India India’s regional carrier FLY91 and aerospace engineering firm Timetooth Technologies signed an MoU to jointly develop and supply indigenously designed, DGCA‑certified aircraft passenger seats. The aim is to support localisation of cabin interiors for FLY91’s ATR 72‑600 fleet. The agreement covers design, prototyping and certification work, aligning with the government’s Make in India initiative. The Government of Odisha signed two separate MoUs at Wings India 2026 to bolster aviation infrastructure and technological capabilities in the state. Flying Training Organisation (FTO): An MoU with Alchemist Aviation will enable the establishment of an FTO at Dandbose Airport in Mayurbhanj district, with a planned annual capacity to train approximately 50 commercial pilots. UAV Training and Testing Centre: Another agreement with BonV Aero will lead to Odisha’s first UAV (drone) training and testing facility at Rangeilunda Airstrip in Ganjam district, expected to train more than 100 UAV pilots annually. Both initiatives are part of Odisha’s strategy to upskill youth and integrate drone technologies into agriculture, logistics, infrastructure and disaster response sectors. Heritage Aviation Pvt. Ltd. also signed a contract for an Airbus H130 helicopter during the event. The aircraft will be used to extend passenger transport services, heli‑pilgrimage offerings and regional connectivity operations, including in India’s Northeast. Leading the way, Air India expanded its substantial order book by adding 30 fuel-efficient Boeing narrowbody aircraft, bringing its total commitment to 600 planes. In addition to aircraft acquisitions, the airline signed a multi-year deal with Boeing Global Services for a Component Services Program. Air India also strengthened its partnership with Airbus by converting 15 A321neo orders into the longer-range A321XLR variant. Air India also entered a strategic MoU with Hindustan Institute of Engineering and Technology (HIET) to create a structured training pipeline for licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AME). The agreement provides for a DGCA‑approved AME Cadet Programme, addressing rapidly rising demand for licensed maintenance talent as Air India expands its fleet. Training will include DGCA‑specified Category B1.1 (Aeroplane Turbine) and B2 (Avionics) streams. Meanwhile, the "Make in India" initiative received a major boost as Sakthi Group and Omnipol signed a Memorandum of Understanding to introduce the L410 NG 19-seater aircraft to the domestic market. The companies are evaluating the feasibility of setting up a Final Assembly Line (FAL) in India. India’s indigenous aerospace strength was also highlighted as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a contract with Pawan Hans Limited for the supply of 10 Dhruv Next Generation (NG) helicopters by 2027, valued at more than ₹1,800 crore, the deal is seen as a significant milestone for the civil helicopter segment, reinforcing the shift towards domestically developed platforms for utility, connectivity, and offshore operations. The agreement underlines India’s growing self-reliance in aerospace manufacturing and its push to strengthen local capabilities across critical aviation services. To support this rapid growth, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) partnered with Airports Council International (ACI) to launch a professional accreditation program. Over the next five years, more than 115 Indian aviation professionals will be trained to meet global leadership standards, ensuring that India's airport management remains world-class. Also the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will invest ₹150 billion by 2028 to modernise the country’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) infrastructure. The investment will focus on upgrading communication, navigation, and surveillance systems across major airports. The initiative aims to enhance airspace capacity, improve flight safety, and support India’s rapidly growing air traffic. The modernisation is also aligned with global standards for digital and automated ATC operations. New Delhi, India: India’s civil aviation sector is facing an escalating pilot shortage that has forced major carriers into an unprecedented competition for captains and senior flight crew, industry sources and official communications show. The scramble for personnel comes amid tighter safety rules on flight duty times and a recent operational disruption at the country’s largest airline. The roster crisis first became widely visible earlier in December, when IndiGo operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd cancelled thousands of flights due to crew unavailability following the implementation of stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These rules, aimed at improving pilot rest and reducing fatigue, require longer rest periods and limit the number of night landings, increasing the number of pilots needed for scheduled services. According to TOI, both IndiGo and the Air India group have entered a fierce competition to recruit experienced captains, with some offers reportedly including joining bonuses of up to ₹50 lakh to attract talent from rivals or international carriers. Such incentives rarely seen at this scale in Indian aviation reflect the acute need for senior pilots capable of leading flight operations across domestic and international routes. Earlier IndiGo has informed the DGCA that it plans to add about 100 pilots in January, while Air India has launched new hiring drives. However, both carriers are dealing with a rise in captain departures, some moving overseas sharpening the recruitment battle as airlines work to meet required crew levels. A senior airline executive quoted by TOI described the situation as exceptionally intense, noting that carriers are actively poaching captains from each other and bracing for continued shortages as FDTL norms reduce the pool of available crew. In response to the operational stress and pilot attrition, IndiGo has announced a revision of pilot compensation, including increases in domestic layover, deadhead, night flying, transit, and newly introduced tail-swap allowances, effective January 1, 2026. Communication from the airline’s flight operations leadership details the enhanced pay structure for both captains and first officers. India is set to see an intense contest for captains between the Air India group and IndiGo. While Air India does not currently face a pilot shortage across most of its fleet, barring the Boeing 787, it must recruit for future growth. IndiGo, meanwhile, will need to strengthen pilot–management relations to retain and attract talent. Akasa does not require additional pilots as it has a surplus. Unless Air India and IndiGo offer improved working conditions, they risk continued pilot migration to the Middle East and destinations such as Vietnam,” said Captain Shakti Lumba, former vice president of Air India and IndiGo. As India’s air passenger traffic continues to grow with the domestic market among the world’s busiest airlines are under pressure to not only restore operational reliability but also to build a resilient workforce.
