The airline halted flying in late April 2026, with its final operated service landing safely at London Stansted Airport before management confirmed the shutdown. Shortly thereafter, the carrier surrendered its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, formally ending its ability to operate commercial flights. Industry reports indicate that the airline’s collapse followed a sustained period of financial strain. Ascend Airways had reportedly been incurring losses of approximately £3 million per month, driven by high fixed operating costs and limited aircraft utilisation. The situation worsened after the carrier failed to secure sufficient ACMI contracts for the upcoming Summer 2026 season, a critical revenue period for wet-lease operators. The ACMI business model, which depends heavily on short-term leasing agreements with other airlines, left Ascend particularly exposed to fluctuations in demand. Without confirmed contracts, aircraft remained underutilised while lease and maintenance costs continued to accrue. Rising jet fuel prices, influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions, further compounded the airline’s financial difficulties. As a UK AOC holder, Ascend also faced higher regulatory and operational costs compared to competitors operating under European Union jurisdictions. Additional pressure came from reported technical issues affecting Boeing 737 MAX aircraft powered by CFM LEAP engines. These issues reduced fleet availability and increased maintenance burdens at a time when operational reliability was critical to securing contracts. At the time of its closure, Ascend Airways operated a fleet of seven aircraft, comprising six Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets and one Boeing 737-800. Following the liquidation, aircraft are being returned to lessors. The collapse has affected approximately 160 employees, including flight crew and operational staff, with job losses expected across the organisation. Ascend Airways was part of Avia Solutions Group, a Lithuania-based aviation services group that operates multiple ACMI and charter airlines worldwide. The group has been expanding its footprint globally, including the development of a separate Malaysian-based affiliate, though this entity is distinct from the UK airline that has now ceased operations. The airline’s collapse reflects wider pressures within the ACMI sector. An oversupply of wet-lease capacity, combined with rising costs and tightening margins, has made it increasingly difficult for smaller operators to remain viable.

Delhi, India: Air India has grounded one of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft after a pilot reported a possible defect in the fuel control switch mechanism, prompting a detailed inspection and coordination with the airframe manufacturer, Boeing. The aircraft, operating as AI132 from London Heathrow to Bengaluru, landed safely at its destination on February 2, after the flight crew observed abnormal behaviour in the left engine’s fuel control switch during pre-flight engine checks, according to airline officials. In a statement, Air India confirmed that a pilot flagged the issue and the aircraft was immediately taken out of service as a precautionary safety measure while the concern is investigated. The airline has informed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and engaged Boeing to prioritise a technical evaluation. “After receiving this initial information, we have grounded the aircraft and are involving the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) to get the pilot’s concerns checked on a priority basis,” an Air India spokesperson said. The matter has also been formally communicated to India’s aviation regulator, the DGCA. Fuel control switches regulate the flow of fuel to an aircraft’s engines and are designed with safeguards to prevent unintended movement. On the Boeing 787, these switches must be lifted and then moved to change position, reducing the likelihood of accidental operation. However, if such a switch were to shift from thle “RUN” to the “CUTOFF” position in flight, it would immediately halt fuel flow, leading to engine shutdown. The focus on fuel control switch behaviour stems from the June 12, 2025 crash of Air India Flight AI-171, another Boeing 787-8, near Ahmedabad, which killed 260 people. A preliminary investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) found that both engine fuel control switches moved from RUN to CUTOFF in quick succession just after takeoff, resulting in dual engine power loss. That incident triggered extensive regulatory scrutiny. In July 2025, Air India announced it had completed precautionary inspections of the fuel control switch locking mechanism on all Boeing 787-8 aircraft and found no defects at the time. Following the recent pilot report, Air India has begun focused inspections of fuel control switches across its Boeing Dreamliner fleet. According to an internal company communication seen by Reuters, these checks have so far not identified a systemic issue with other aircraft. Air India has reiterated that passenger and crew safety remains its top priority. Boeing has said it is assisting with the review.

The abrupt closure has left several Alaska communities without scheduled passenger air service, raising concerns over rural connectivity in the state. In a message posted on the company’s website on Monday, Kenai Aviation owner Joel Caldwell said he was “devastated” by the decision but could no longer sustain operations amid mounting debt. “We have to cease all operations immediately. I am devastated,” Caldwell wrote. “Our operations may stop, but this vision continues… I believe that Flight 114 will board again. We need capital, we need partners, we need a lifeline.” Founded in 1959, Kenai Aviation originally supported Cook Inlet’s oil and gas operations before expanding into passenger and charter services across south-central Alaska. Caldwell acquired the company in 2018 and attempted to modernize its fleet and restart scheduled service to underserved communities. The company faced a growing debt burden dating back to the pandemic period, which intensified after its King Air aircraft, a key asset serving the Anchorage Unalakleet route, was grounded for maintenance. The setback severely affected the carrier’s ability to maintain service reliability and cash flow. “Kenai Aviation has been struggling to keep up with the cost of operations in an environment where rising fuel, maintenance, and insurance expenses are hitting small regional carriers hardest,” the ADN report stated. Earlier in 2025, the airline’s performance had already been under scrutiny when data showed that only about 45% of scheduled flights between Anchorage and Unalakleet were completed during a three-week span starting in July. The shutdown is a major blow to Unalakleet, a western Alaska community that relied on Kenai Aviation for passenger travel and cargo. With the airline’s exit, the village now lacks a regularly scheduled passenger carrier. Kenai Aviation’s departure could disrupt essential mobility for residents and delay medical, educational, and commercial travel. Chennai, India: An Air India flight Airbus 320 operating from Colombo to Chennai was forced to undergo a post-landing inspection on Tuesday after a suspected bird strike during its approach. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo.
