Passengers experienced rising cabin temperatures and a temporary loss of in-flight entertainment. The aircraft landed safely, and engineers conducted an extensive inspection before clearing it for future operations. Air New Zealand emphasized that these precautionary returns reflect the airline's commitment to passenger safety and adherence to standard safety protocols. This marks a significant milestone in the airline's "Pathway to Perfect" strategy, aiming to establish operational excellence ahead of its full commercial launch. Riyadh Air also introduces Sfeer, a pioneering loyalty program designed for a digitally connected, community-oriented generation. Members can share level points with friends and family, helping their peers achieve higher status within the program. Early members will receive priority access to future flight bookings and exclusive experiences. Chennai, India: An Air India flight Airbus 320 operating from Colombo to Chennai was forced to undergo a post-landing inspection on Tuesday after a suspected bird strike during its approach. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

The aircraft, registered VT-ANO, landed safely in Birmingham, though its return service to Delhi was cancelled and the jet was grounded for detailed inspections. India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has launched a probe into the incident. According to officials, all electrical and hydraulic systems remained stable despite the RAT deployment. Routine maintenance checks recommended by Boeing were performed on the aircraft, and no discrepancies were reported. The DGCA has stated that the jet will be cleared to return to service only after thorough inspections are completed. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) President G S Randhawa has formally written to the DGCA, warning that limiting post-crash inspections to fuel control switches is insufficient. Instead, the group has urged regulators to expand checks to the electrical systems of all Boeing 787 aircraft in India. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Aviation analyst Sean Moulton noted that PLAY attempted to replicate WOW Air’s model, linking secondary European cities with the U.S., but faced a limited market and low yields. Even after shifting strategy to focus on point-to-point leisure destinations, the small Icelandic population made it difficult for the airline to succeed independently. The sudden suspension has caused significant disruption for passengers, many of whom are currently stranded abroad. Travelers are advised to contact their credit card providers, travel agencies, or flight insurers for refunds. In addition, some carriers may provide “rescue fares” for affected travelers seeking alternative routes. Sydney, Australia: On Monday, September 8, 2025, British Airways flight BA16, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating from Sydney to Singapore, made an emergency return to Sydney Airport after the crew issued a mayday call roughly one hour into the flight. The aircraft landed safely, with all passengers disembarking unharmed. The flight had departed Sydney at 2:40 PM local time. Around an hour into the journey, the crew reported a strong fuel smell in the cockpit. “Mayday Speed Bird 16. I’m just about to come fully established on 34 left. We will have to stop for a minute after landing,” the pilot communicated during a call to air traffic control. In response, a Sydney Airport controller acknowledged, saying, “G’day, copy, mayday acknowledged.” Passengers described a tense and unsettling experience.
