Istanbul, Turkey: Turkish Airlines (THY) announced on September 26, 2025, a landmark fleet expansion, planning to acquire up to 225 Boeing aircraft in a deal worth billions of dollars. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. This announcement closely followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included energy policies and potential easing of U.S. sanctions to facilitate F-35 fighter jet purchases. “Negotiations with Boeing have been successfully concluded, supporting our strategy to rank among the world’s top five airlines with a fleet of 813 aircraft by 2033. Our nation’s pride, Turkish Airlines, is confidently advancing toward this goal,” said Bilal Ekşi, CEO of Turkish Airlines. The new aircraft will replace older models, improve fuel efficiency, enhance passenger comfort, and support the airline’s sustainability objectives.

Bangkok, Thailand: Thai Airways International is preparing to retire its First Class service within the next two to three years, opting instead to invest in an upgraded Business Class as part of a sweeping fleet and product modernization plan. The national carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Chai Eamsiri, confirmed the decision during a recent briefing, framing it as a move toward long-term efficiency and competitiveness. “We plan to eliminate First Class and replace it with enhanced Business Class cabins. It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline intends to streamline this into a three-class offering: Economy, Premium Economy, and an elevated Business Class. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. This new “Business Plus” concept is expected to include more spacious seating in the front row, enhanced privacy potentially with doors and upgraded amenities. While First Class is being phased out, Thai Airways aims to bridge the gap by enriching its Business Class service.The airline has already begun introducing premium amenities into Business, including caviar service on select routes. This aligns with a wider industry trend in which airlines consolidate luxury offerings into an expanded Business Class product rather than maintaining costly, limited-use First Class cabins. Passenger demand also played a decisive role.The modern Business Class products now rival traditional First Class in terms of comfort and privacy, making the higher-cost cabin less attractive and less financially sustainable for carriers. Thai Airways’ shift is also tied to its broader fleet renewal strategy. New aircraft on order, such as Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, will be delivered without First Class cabins. The carrier is also retrofitting its existing fleet to ensure product consistency. Maintaining First Class across just a handful of aircraft and routes such as Bangkok to London and Tokyo has become impractical. Rationalizing the fleet is expected to lower operating costs and simplify scheduling.

Germany: Germany is moving to reverse last year’s aviation tax increase, a step that could make flying from the country more affordable and strengthen its position as a leading European air travel hub. The federal government is considering undoing the levy imposed in May 2024, which raised departure charges on short-haul flights from €12.48 to €15.53, alongside similar increases for medium- and long-haul flights. If approved as part of the 2026 federal budget, the reversal is expected to come into effect ahead of the peak summer travel season, potentially lowering ticket prices for millions of passengers. The 2024 hike was introduced as a fiscal measure to boost government revenue and encourage climate-friendly travel. However, it immediately drew criticism from airlines and tourism advocates who warned it undermined Germany’s competitiveness and pushed airlines to cut capacity or withdraw routes altogether. Low-cost carriers such as Ryanair reduced services at several German airports, while tourism officials, including federal tourism coordinator Christoph Ploss, urged the government to reduce both aviation taxes and airport charges to restore confidence in the market. Rolling back the increase faces significant fiscal and political challenges. The levy contributes approximately €500 million in additional annual revenue, and officials have yet to identify alternative sources to offset the shortfall. As per Reuters a senior government source recently noted that while the aviation sector requires relief, the reversal is “not currently a priority” amid tight public finances and rising defense spending commitments. The debate is also complicated by environmental concerns, with critics warning that cheaper airfares could stimulate higher passenger volumes and increase emissions. In response, government sources have indicated that any tax reform may be paired with sustainability initiatives, including incentives for airlines to use sustainable aviation fuels and invest in cleaner fleets. Despite these challenges, industry groups believe a tax rollback would provide immediate benefits, restoring passenger growth and route development that were disrupted by the 2024 hike. It could also help German airports compete more effectively with hubs in neighboring countries that have maintained or lowered their aviation levies. Major carriers such as Lufthansa and Eurowings, as well as low-cost operators, are closely watching the budget process, which will determine whether the rollback is implemented in full or in phases. The Bundestag is expected to debate the proposal later this year as part of the 2026 budget negotiations. If passed, passengers could see cheaper tickets as early as 2026, a change likely to influence booking patterns and airline strategies for the coming years. The government faces the difficult task of balancing consumer benefits and industry competitiveness with environmental targets and fiscal stability, but the outcome of this reform could mark a significant shift in Germany’s aviation policy.
