Vietnam Airlines plans to take delivery of the Boeing 737-8 jets between 2030 and 2032. With this expansion, the carrier projects its total fleet will grow to approximately 151 aircraft by 2030, strengthening its ability to serve high-traffic domestic and short-haul international routes. The airline’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Đặng Ngọc Hòa, said the investment underscores a “comprehensive and forward-looking” approach to fleet modernization, financial resilience, and human resource development. He emphasized that the new aircraft will enhance “operational performance and service standards” while deepening the airline’s long-standing partnership with Boeing. The Boeing 737-8 is Boeing’s most versatile narrow-body jet, featuring advanced aerodynamics, CFM International LEAP-1B engines and next-generation winglets that deliver about 20 % better fuel efficiency and lower emissions than older aircraft models. Each jet can accommodate up to 200 passengers with a range of up to 6,570 km (approximately 3,550 nautical miles), making it suitable for VN’s dense short- and medium-haul market segments. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said the 737-8 will support Vietnam Airlines as it aligns the 737 MAX family with its existing Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet to enhance connectivity across Asia. Vietnam’s aviation market continues to expand rapidly, driven by robust economic growth and increasing mobility across Southeast Asia. Vietnam Airlines aims to maintain double-digit annual growth in key performance indicators, including passenger and cargo traffic, over the next five years. Industry analysts note that the addition of the 737-8 will diversify Vietnam Airlines’ fleet, which currently consists primarily of Airbus A320 family aircraft in the narrowbody segment and Boeing 787 Dreamliners on long-haul services. The Boeing order is part of a flurry of aerospace contracts signed by Vietnamese carriers in Washington this week. In related deals, Sun PhuQuoc Airways committed to purchasing 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in a US$22.5 billion agreement, and Vietjet Air finalised financing for six Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Vietnam Airlines is also in negotiations with Boeing for an additional 30 wide-body jets worth up to US$12 billion, aimed at bolstering its long-haul international network.

New Delhi, India: India’s aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry is projected to grow into a $4 billion market by 2031, supported by regulatory reforms, rising aircraft inductions and increasing participation from global aviation companies, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said. The minister made the remarks while addressing an aviation industry gathering, where he outlined the government’s strategy to transform India into a competitive global MRO destination and curb the country’s heavy reliance on overseas maintenance facilities. At present, nearly nine out of ten Indian-registered aircraft are maintained abroad, primarily due to cost disadvantages and regulatory complexities. This has resulted in substantial foreign exchange outflows, estimated by industry bodies at over $1.5 billion annually. Officials believe that strengthening domestic MRO capacity can reverse this trend while improving operational efficiency for Indian airlines. Naidu said the government has undertaken a series of policy measures to improve the sector’s viability, most notably the reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on MRO services from 18 per cent to 5 per cent, placing India on a more level footing with established MRO hubs in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. “These reforms are intended to create a stable, predictable and investor-friendly environment,” the minister said, adding that lower taxation and streamlined compliance procedures have already begun to attract international players. The inauguration of new facilities, including Safran Aircraft Engine Services India, has been cited by the ministry as a key milestone in building a strong MRO ecosystem. The Safran facility is expected to support next-generation aircraft engines and contribute to skill development, technology transfer and local employment. India’s commercial aviation sector continues to expand rapidly. The country is currently the third-largest domestic aviation market globally, and its fleet size is expected to grow sharply over the next decade. Industry projections suggest that Indian airlines could be operating more than 1,500 aircraft by the early 2030s, significantly increasing demand for routine maintenance, heavy checks and engine overhauls. Government officials say a robust MRO sector will help airlines reduce aircraft downtime, lower operating costs and improve fleet availability. The sector is also expected to generate high-skilled jobs in engineering, tooling, quality assurance and aviation safety, while supporting allied industries such as component manufacturing and logistics. Naidu reiterated that developing domestic MRO capabilities aligns with the government’s broader “Make in India” and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. By retaining maintenance work within the country, India aims to strengthen its position across the global aviation value chain and reduce long-term dependence on foreign service providers. The ministry has indicated that further policy fine-tuning and infrastructure development, particularly at major airports and upcoming aviation hubs, will continue as part of efforts to sustain long-term growth in the sector.

This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. This announcement closely followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included energy policies and potential easing of U.S. sanctions to facilitate F-35 fighter jet purchases. “Negotiations with Boeing have been successfully concluded, supporting our strategy to rank among the world’s top five airlines with a fleet of 813 aircraft by 2033. The national carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Chai Eamsiri, confirmed the decision during a recent briefing, framing it as a move toward long-term efficiency and competitiveness. “We plan to eliminate First Class and replace it with enhanced Business Class cabins. It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. It could also help German airports compete more effectively with hubs in neighboring countries that have maintained or lowered their aviation levies. Major carriers such as Lufthansa and Eurowings, as well as low-cost operators, are closely watching the budget process, which will determine whether the rollback is implemented in full or in phases. The Bundestag is expected to debate the proposal later this year as part of the 2026 budget negotiations.
